Downgrade from CM11 to CM 7 or any other ROM - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have installed CM11 (4.4.2) on Defy and it is working fine except the battery.
This entailed installing TWRP
Earlier I had MIUI Pikachu edition.
Questions
1. How do I install or restore my MIUI backup again.
2. Also I would like to downgrade to CM 7/9 which is more stable
Any links or step by step suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks
Ninad

Probably you need to flash sbf to get an old bootstrap.

I wan to downgrade as well, preferrably w/o sbf. But I flashed so often by now, searching for the fastest way w/o: 1-sbf, 2-reroot, 3-custom recovery and 4-flashing cm7 would take more time, than the flashing process itself.
So that's what I'm gonna do. Hope it gets snappier then. CM11 with just about 9-10 apps (facebook, messenger, whatsapp, gmail, gcal, aero control, battery stats, es file explorer) is already torture for my defy.

I have an idea, and its a possibility for you. I have a Atrix 4G which also is on CM11, and like you guys on the Defy, has a bigpart mod. For us to downgrade, its flash an old recovery, boot to recovery, factory reset, wipe all partitions (system, data, cache, boot (that should be the ones you have too)), flash desired ROM/restore backup. Not sure if that will work for you, but its worth a shot. If it doesn't work, i'd try sbf'ing (someone posted an sbf lately if i remember correctly
Sent from my ATRIX HD using XDA Free mobile app

Unfortunately I don't know what sbf to take - it might be irrelevant, since i accidentally flashed to bl7 long ago and since I wanted to reroot again, twrp and cm7 it might not matter which one to flash. I am trying to speed things up a bit, and struggle with twrp atm, because safewipe.zip might no longer be safe (unable to enter twrp) or the version was not meant for my configuration.
Now i trimmed all part's and try amplifying services, but it's been a while since i tuned my defy.
OT: I switched to Moto G and E2 (but lost both ones - or they've been stolen) and now I want to reactivate my old pal before switching to anything new again. It's getting expensive...
So don't wait, maybe I'll get CM11 to work good enough again, but if not, I'll try to provide a checklist.

A good rom suggestion?

hey!
Anyone have any good suggestions for a rom for HTC - Mytouch 4g? I am pretty much a n00b even though I manage to pull a complete ultimate true root and s=off lol.
i have the original tmobile stock rom though, is there a just Android 2.2 or Android 2.3 Vanilla rom for HTC mytouch 4g?!
I've seen EvilZ and Ice galicier , but I am not sure which one to go about .
Any (good) suggestions would really help!
thanks a bunch.

Search the dev section for nightly CM7, Its very vanilla-ish gingerbread and very stable btw, some pros?...improved battery life, open to customization, overall a better looking ui, runs silky smooth, and the kernel supports oc up to 1.5
Sent from my rooted glacier running CM7 and grankin's oc kernel
Thanks man!
but are those CM-7 nightly ones stable though?! I won't likely experience any SD-memory card errors, wifi not working , and etc *the usual problems* lol.
I would like to remain at 1 Ghz for now LOL. Just need a vanilla android version with tons of customizations though!
Also, since my phone is currently "ultimate perm true rooted + s=off " , I installd Rom Manager and did a Flash clockworkMod Recovery, only once though. Should I do it again? (twice)?
So, can you please tell me what is the true purpose of CWM? I know you can use it to recover, but recover what exactly and how is that possible?
Let's say I decide to get the CM-7 nightly version, what do I do need to do? (any specific guide) ive read general guides and I believe I did the right things lol.
Now with regarding flashing, it flashes the NAND chip right? :S So the apps i have installed and other tmobile junk will be lost? like it would be a complete full format process (similar to PC?)?
Thanks again! I appreciate it and I am looking through the thread and googling to learn .

1. Regarding how stable it is..its super stablr considering its still an alpha and i trust it enough to use it as my daily driver (i need 100% reliability and the phone has never let me down). Only known bugs are qik not working (and its a 2.3 compatibility issue rather than a rom issue) and you can use tango instead, ffc has a reverted x-axis effect xD..., mms might be blurry (which is fixed by changin the ua undr mms settings) and some may have other bugs i have not yet noticed
2. Your current 2.5 cwm will not work with gb, you will need to flash any 3.xxx version to install cm7. Cwm is designed to do backups of ur current working system and can be restored in the events of ur phone acting up (i.e bootloops or major issues...) although its also used to easily install .zip files (cm7 is a rom contained in .zip file and will need to be installes via recovery), its used also to wipe the system cache, dalvik cache and/or full wipes in the events of issues.
3. Here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916930#
Thats the nightly thread, you will have a "nightly" update you can flash thru recovery
4. If u go to cm7 you will have to (must) do a full wipe. Download titanium backup and back up ur existing apps and data (dont wanna lose ur angry birds progress), once cm7 is up just download tit bcup again and you'll have ur data back.
Hope this helped

one question at a time, bro.
1)the CM7 Nightlies are "Fairly" stable, though they do have bugs, as they are not fully complete (then again, no rom really is devoid of bugs and things to improve).
2)as for flashing CWM a second time, sometimes the recovery doesnt stick and when you boot into recovery, you will still go to the stock recovery. The second flash of CWM should fix this, and you should go to the CWM screen.
3) The purpose of CWM is to flash the various ROMs you'll find in the Development Section of this area. It also allows you to create nandroid backups, which will allow you to restore your phone to a specific state in time if something goes wrong or something (also helps to flash back to a rom without having to reinstall everything, which takes forever)
4)to flash a gingerbread (either CM7 or otherwise) you'll need to flash the CWM 3 to your phone manually, using the methods laid out in several threads in the Dev section. then you'll need to flash the rom, plus the Gapps for that rom (google apps like gmail, market, etc)
5)and yes, flashing a new rom will wipe all the data f(apps, accounts, call and text logs, etc) from the previous rom the previous (or youll need to do so before flashing). Now you see why you make nandroid backups also, using a backup application like titanium or MyBackup can make that process much simpler.
Arighty. I've been reading that CM-7 nightly thread for now!
I am excited now to flash it! Plus your suggestion and said it is the most vanillaish rom avaliable .
Okay, so I have Rom Manager Preimum that is 3.0.0.7 and since I flashed it currently, so CWM is 2.5.1.2 .
and I need CWM 3.x?
Regarding CWM 3.x? theres ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5 and clockwork-3-20110116-MT4G.img .
Which one of the above CWM 3.x, is better to use? Also, they are in .img format, so how would I go about flashing it?
this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10670110&postcount=531
its using CWM 3.0.0.5 , is that a good method ?
And what happens to my current CWM 2.5.1.2? I already flashed it with that, do i need to "unflash" it ?
After that CWM, I use Titanium backup (i have pro version) to backup my apps + phone contacts right? I don't want to backup tmobile bloatware . I only the apps i paid for through android market.
And then, I download CM-7 and transfer it to my phone via usb cable to the sd card. Then use ROM Manager to flash it?!
thanks again!

Thank you bro!
I appreciate all that information and effort you put into it.
And yes, you are right. All roms have flaws, they all need to be worked out . But, this tmobile rom is just a bit annoying .
I posted a reply already, so I believe i know how to go about doing this CM-7 stuff...but just need to make sure I go the steps and necessary backup done.
thanks!
p.s. can you transfer phone contacts to simcard in this CM-7 rom? tombile has this option shut off for android 2.2 for G2 and MYT4G~! i know HTC Desire Z Bell's rom has the option to save contacts on the simcard, :S. Unless theres some other issue that i am not aware of it.

well, Im running a Desire HD port (gorillaSense), so my rom has that feature, but I havent used CM7 in a little while. However, if you sync your contacts to google instead of t-mobile, youll have all of them no matter what rom you use, no matter if it has t-mobile contacts or sim card contacts or anything.
and yeah, the t-mobile rom is annoying, thats why I got off it as soon as I could and never looked back. Personally I prefer the Sense ROMs, but I can see the merits of the CM and AOSP ROMs too, its personal preference.

K, so i checked the settings on the contact application and you can only export your stored contacts to the SD card, you are able to import from SIM but not to export to SIM. Like the post above stated though, as long as you are on an android phone you will have your contacts synced

[Q] First time ever that im going to use a custom rom

Allright.. i decided to start using a custom rom, which will be CM9. but because of soo mutch information on this website i dont fully understand anymore what to do, and because im still a noob, i cant post in the original thread of CM9.
I have a Red lens Motorola Defy MB525, found out with catlog that i got the bayer camera module , non branded, stock froyo.
Rooted my defy
nandroid backup with 2nd init , made a copy to my laptop to be completely save.
did backup the apps with titanium backup
also have the app battery calibration so i can fix my battery after the custom rom.
i will write the custom rom when my battery is on atleast 50 percent, so it will not die.
So what do i have to do next?
download the correct ROM, it will come as a .zip
copy it to your sdcard, reboot to 2nd init recovery,
factory reset, and wipe dalvik cache from advanced menu.
then in recovery choose install zip from sdcard, choose your ROM.zip, install,
reboot, it will take pretty long until it boots first time because system is rebuilding the dalvik. (~5min)
Wow , thats sounds way more simple then i can find on this site.
Ill try it tommorow night! any further suggestions?
Maybe you should try multiboot first just to be on the safe side.
what is multiboot and how can i do that?
Multiboot is basically the possibility to have two or more different ROMs (e.g. CM7 and CM9) installed at the same time and when you boot up you can choose which ROM you want to use. But it is a bit complicated and it wouldn't work with stock Froyo as one of the ROMs I think.
More suggestions? You should also download the latest gapps from http://goo.im/gapps and put the zip on your sd card as well. After wiping and installing the CM9 Nightly from sd go to install zip from sd again and choose the gapps .zip. After that you can reboot the system.
The gapps are the Google Apps (i.e. Play Store and some more) and without them you can't even setup your Google Account, download apps, use Gmail etc.
Ah thanks for that! downloaded it and saved it to my desktop for now.
Still need to figure out which rom i need to choose.. the epsylon?

That would be good. Try it out and see if it suits your requirements..There are many ROM's for froyo kernel. You can try those and see which suits you best.
Happy Modding.

Cant wait till all the apps are back on my phone from the backups that i made and then let the modding begin! haha

Questions go in the Q&A section

n00b - moving from CM7 to another rom?

Apologies for the state of this question, but it's been a while
I've been using CM7 on my unlocked Defy since I bought it (6-8 months). However, recently it's gotten a lot more unstable; it freezes up all the time, I can't wake it up, google maps will crash half the time, the camera too, and it involves me restarting it a fair bit. I need to sort it out and I thought I could take this opportunity to try out a new ROM
However I haven't done anything ROM related for a while, and the computer I originally rooted/installed a new ROM on my Defy with is no long gone...so I'm not even sure what programs I need to install.
I seem to remember, the way the Defy is set up, it isn't as simple as wiping the phone and installing any ROM on it?
Could anyone point me in the direction of a guide on here dedicated to moving from CM7 to another ROM? From scratch? Failing that, I may be tempted to just try and wipe and get CM7 on there from the beginning...not even sure where to start
Thanks
If you want to flash a stock ROM, you need to flash the SBF through RSDLite.
While to flash a custom ROM(CM7,CM9), boot into recovery, wipe all, flash the zip from sdcard.

nice one, thanks. It's just as simple as that when changing from one ROM to another? I thought something to do with how the Defy's memory worked meant some kind of 'backtracking; wasn't possible

Yep, that simple. You could try Pikachu Edition, for example, which is even easier (just get into Recovery, install zip, choose the zip file and then AROMA installer does almost everything that's needed). I'm just starting to try it, many people like it.
If you move between CM7 nightlies it isn't even necessary to wipe data, but given your condition, I would recommend you to wipe everything and start again (remember to backup apps and data).
Good luck!
great, always good to see a bit of pikachu
can I go straight from CM7 to pikachu via a wipe? isn't CM7 on kernel 2.3.7?

[Q] Please help me with my defy plus

Hello there! I really hope you can help me with this, because I don`t have any other ideas or even the courage to try new ones. I recently bought a defy plus and after tens of pages read on the Internet about kernels, SBFs, ROMs and other android stuff I decided to start modding it. It came with a stock 2.3.6 Android, which I swapped for a ParanoidAndroid 2.14 (with Android 4.1.1), which I liked a lot, but I was quite laggy.
Then I decided to look for other ROMs and I wanted to install CM7. But here is my problem: I can`t. I tried to flash this file (cm-7.2.0-jordan), but it didn`t work. Then I had to flash a SBF to get my phone back. I think it was the wrong SBF (filename: JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_179-002_DEBLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTTR_P013_A013_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf) because it bricked ( hard brick, I couldn`t even start it), but luckly I had it fixed cause I still have my guarantee (which is a mistery for me, how did they do it? didnt they see it was rooted and this broke the terms of the guarantee?).
Anyway, they re-softed it and now I have a working phone. I rooted it, installed 2nd init and tried again. Now with a nightly version of CM7: cm-7-20130301-NIGHTLY-jordan. It still goes into a bootloop. I went through all the steps, root phone, install 2nd init, Wipe data/factory and Wipe cache and install from sd card.
My first and most important question is: do I have to be on stock android (meaning I have to flash the stock 2.3.6) every time I want to flash a custom ROM? Or can I be on, let`s say ParanoidAndroid, and change directly to CM10?
And my second question: How can I install CM7 for defy plus?
Thank you for your future responses.
Ok, I figured out the CM7 part, I think I was trying to flash a wrong nightly file. I got another one and I finally have CM7 on my phone. But, please, can someone give me an answer to my first question: For every custom ROM I install, I have to go back to stock 2.3.6 every time? Or can I flash, for example a MIUI, right now, on my CM7, without going back to stock rom?
No need to flash stock every time. Data should be wiped along with cache

[Q] update CM7 to CM10 after messing up with wrong sbf

Hi everyone,
some time ago I flashed a wrong sbf to my Defy and thanks to the All-in-One Defy Beginner's guide
Zephyrot said:
Installed full Gingerbread SBF and can’t go back to another rom: (!) aha! We have a issue here!, latest Stock Gingerbread full SBFs comes with a Version 5 of the CG, meaning until not long ago you were pretty much screwed. But wait, there is hope! A one kind Éclair has been found in China Defys that comes with Version 5 CG!.
How to fix it:
Method 1:
Download this SBF and Flash it
Root your Phone
Download 2nd Init 1.4.2 and Install ClockworkMod Recovery
Download and install this Nandroid Backup << File is Back, thanks Ichibanme again!>>
Enter Recovery, Wipe Data/Cache
After wiping, turn off your phone
Turn it on and get immediately into Bootloader mode
Flash this Fixed SBF
Delete Data/Cache again and reboot.
**NOTE*: I just rephrased the original post since it can be a bit confusing, it is linked as source below.
**NOTE2**: If you are using a non-Chinese defy, DO NOT USE THE CAMERA FLASH while on the Chinese rom, it WILL kill your LED.
Source: ((Original post here))[
Method 2: (BIG thanks to Jebrew again for this one)
NOTE: You are going to need CM7 for this one. CM7 Stable version recommended.
Download this SBF and Flash it.
Root your phone.
Download 2nd Init 1.4.2 and Install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Reboot to CMW recovery, and wipe Data/Cache.
Install CM7 then install Google Apps.
Reboot an go into Stock Recovery (using the vol- button, not from Bootmenu).
Do a Data/Cache Wipe or you won't have any space when you're done.
Flash this Fixed SBF
Reboot into your nice new rom.
Do not Wipe Data anymore or you will have to start again.

You WONT be able to install full SBFs of any Éclair or Froyo since these Androids have lower CG Versions.

I'm running CM7 again with a version 5 CG, if I got it right.
So far so good. But now I need to update my ROM to be able to update some apps that won't run on CM7.
So what's the best tactic for updating this messed up phone? Just flashing any CM10+ ROM (I tried several ones) didn't seem to work. I always got stucked at the red Motorola 'M'.
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot!
Cheers,
Martin

Besides the fact that I can't go anywhere to do a factory reset as soon as I've updated to something like CM10, I do a lot of resets/wipes on my way to this state (see quoted guide above).

Tried that, but now I always get a Status 7 error message when trying to install (no matter if I wipe with Aroma or in CWM). I found a lot of people with that same problem but no solution for me... I'm wondering why I did not have that status 7 thing before....

But this is a Defy+ sbf and after flashing I might not be able to go back, or not?
From the thread [Q] defy bricked, not even JORDN_U3_97.21.51.sbf helps :

Or am I getting this wrong?

Well, it helped some people. You can't go back to 2.2 after flashing GB.

Thanks for clarifying.
But I just decided to not mess around another time and will stick to my well running CM7.2 for this device. I found a workaround for my app-prob anyway.
Thanks again for help!
