I have a chance to trade my Transformer 16gb for a Xoom 32gb ...
Any reasons to stay away from the xoom ?
I owned a Xoom before switching to the Transformer. I can think of many good reasons to stay with the Transformer (better update support, IPS screen, keyboard dock option) and not a single good reason to swap for a Xoom (okay, maybe access to the latest Android update by a few days or a couple of weeks, but I still think Asus is doing a better job of supporting/updating the Transformer in general).

I agree. I own both and the TF offers many more features. Just inspect the TF you get for screen light leaks. Some are pretty bad. That is the only commplaint I have about my TF is those light leaks. The IPS screen is so much better than the Xoom even with the leaks... I notice the coming Xoom2 is promising a hi-res screen... Probably an IPS too as opposed to the current XGVA... Let us know what you choose!
Well I just bought an Asus transformer at best buy but my question was if it was really worth it or should I waited for the prime?

Look at this way.
Original Asus Transformer - Entry Level with more features then most other tablets
Asus Transformer Prime - High Spec Level - More powerful, plays 1080p, slimmer, better looking.
Then decide what you want to do with it and if the advantages of the Prime are worth the extra cost.
I own the original Transformer and it does everything I need it for so I'm happy to wait a few months after the release of the Prime before I consider changing.
But if money is no object and you can wait another month then I recommend you wait for the Prime.
Money is definately a factor and as for the features on the prime the only thing I was very amazed by was the speed with its quad core Tegra 3 thingy
If I had the money before buying the transformer I would definatley wait but I only had 400 dollars and I really needed a tablet or laptop because I recently sold my netbook which was freaking slow (that's why I sold it)
So in conclusion I might wait a few months maybe 5 months to upgrade and right now I'm looking for a cheap docking station because freaking best buy still has them at 150 dollars

It's not really an extra cost !! the Prime costs 32GB for $500 and 64GB for $600 !! Same as the old one except that there's no 16GB !!
I would've chosen the Prime... I bought my Transformer 5 Months ago and I feel like It's already outdated !! the new one is so much better !!
The thing is... I haven't had one bit of lag on my Transformer. And its not even OCd, its stock. Its perfectly fast.
And its going to be getting ICS, and the update after that too probably!
Also, you can already find reports of the speed of Tegra 3 being massively disapointing, not as fast as a quadcore should be. Whereas the transformer is faster than it should be in my opinion. Also, apart from being slimmer and lighter, the keyboard has the same layout, not inproved in my book, annoying!
I will be waiting for the next one anyway!

If I recall, same thing happened with Tegra 2. "Software not optimized" and so on.
Regardless of that, I agree with post #2, it depends on your "level" desired.
It's like buying a Nexus S or a Galaxy NX, or maybe from SGSII and Galaxy NX
If you have more than enough with the TF101 16GB then you chose correctly (I'm on the same situation)
I hate to bring this up but perfect analogy is iPhone 4 vs 4S in my opinion.
My wife got me the transformer 101 for xmas. I based my decision on the fact that most reviewers found that the tegra 3 was somewhat disappointing with most saying it was not always even noticeable as far as speed was concerned. the only lag i notice on it is due to honeycomb and not the tablet's hardware. The custom roms seemed to have improved that to an extent. I have an almost fully working version of ICS on my g2 and judging based on that version I would say that ICS will really improve the lag issues and general experience of it. Of course ICS on the prime will probably really improve it as well but Im happy with my transformer it does everything pretty well and i am rarely frustrated with it.

The Transformer 1 does everything that I need it to do, including providing the best screen on any tablet/laptop right now (aside from the expensive IPS Thinkpad Tablet).
I got mine with keyboard for $350 CDN. The Prime with keyboard, even if available, will be more than double that amount. I'd rather spend the extra $350 on necessities.

I bet that it will be quite awhile before Android takes full advantage of quad-cores. By then, we will have much faster tablets anyway. For those who have the money, the Prime is a great upgrade, but for most of us, we don't need 4 cores or the extra GPU power. I don't play intense games on my tablet. I find controlling the touch interface too much of a hassle.
yeah this was a quote from the review on the verge from Joanna Stern on the tegra 3 and its use on the transformer
GENERAL OS, EVERYDAY PERFORMANCE
Going into this review my biggest question was does Android and the general software experience benefit at all from the extra cores and power? I soon learned that the answer to that isn’t that cut and dry. While Nvidia says the general UI and OS should feel faster, I have only found that to be the case some of the time. While you can see in the video that swipes across homescreens are swifter, the waiting that frequently occurs when opening menus or toggling between apps on Honeycomb tablets isn’t completely gone. I also didn’t notice much of a difference when it came to multitasking — it didn’t have a problem running multiple apps, but I didn’t notice a speed increase between the Prime and the original Transformer under heavy loads.

Also battery life was shorter
So a big update on the battery life. On our standard test with brightness set at 65 percent and power saving mode switched on, the tablet lasted six hours and five minutes — exactly an hour longer than when it was set to normal mode. Still, that's an hour shorter than the original Transformer

As you can see i think it is generally an OS related problem right now than anything else. All that being said I couldn't justify the 200 dollars more for it.
The Prime is more elegant and definitely more powerful. But it is not a huge step and the Transformer 1 will get all Ice cream sandwich benefits also (probably including some speed/ smoothness improvements).
I find it a bit disappointing that there is no 16GB Prime for a lower Price but I will stick to my TF101 anyway (of course I'd switch to the Prime if someone gave it to me for free), but I'll rather wait for the next generation with higher resolutions and maybe more RAM (or Android Jellybean...)
Thanks for sharing. Missed that part, honestly.

If you want a rooted tablet, then the PRIME is not for you..bootloader is locked, apparently. So, despite hardware limitations, I am glad to have chosen the TF101 over the prime.
Hey everyone, I heard that the transformer prime is supposed to have way more battery life, like 3hrs more, than the tf101. Is this true? Because that would be the only reason whether or not I would buy it??? Someone tell me the truth.
I just got a TF101 as well and learning today that the Prime's booloader is locked made me really happy I didn't fork out the extra cash.
My TF101 was so easy to root I couldn't believe it - the only device I've rooted before is my HTC Desire Z which was a lot more hazzle.
Very happy with my Transformer

I would also want to know if this "feature" is true. It has been sad that it is because a 5th low voltage core (600MHz I think) does your background stuff, like when you have it on idle.
I also have this decision to make. 1st prime is still not available in stores in my country, but I wonder if the prime is worth the extra cash. I'm thinking like this for now prime is more cool, more powerfull, better battery, more expensive and have some troubles with wireless antenas (someone please talk about these problems, how bad is it?). For cool, it lasts few time I think, after a while, you will want to play with it rather than admiring his looks. Powerfull, dont think I'll need the extra juice, battery - Strong pro point, poor wireless reception - Strong con point
Im guessing for 500$ (or €) I can get the TF101 16 GB with dock, or the prime 32GB without the dock. But havent decided yet, but more likely going to the tf101.
also check the prime TF700T, it was thought to fix the wireless antennas problem among other improvements (e.g. higher res screen), but will be more expensive, starting at 599$
My friend recently got a Galaxy Tab 8.9 which is also Tegra 2 powered like the Transformer. I witnessed a lot of slowdown and frequent crashes which require rebooting of the device. He was contemplating on having it exchanged for another unit but he blames the Tegra 2 inside.
Now I have not read a lot about the Tegra 2 SoC but can his claim be true? Or maybe that was just the fault of the stock ROM and kernel? Was stock HC on the Transformer that bad? I saw the many ROMs for this device and that was one factor in me wanting to get it in the next 2 months (hoping to find a good deal on ebay)...
I was thinking that a tweaked out Transformer could be better than the average Tegra 2 device (since it has a lot of expandable memory + keyboard dock + USB slots). Because if a tweaked Transformer still could not deal with the "problems" of Tegra 2, I might just get another dual-core tablet that isnt on Tegra (Galaxy Tab 7.0+ or 7.7) or I might wait until the Transformer Prime gets its stuff together...

for the TF101 aka transformer first gen, i do get reboots but that's on a rare occassion, if its often it could be due to heat issues, bad chip, etc...but so far the Tf101 is pretty rock solid if you ask me

I've had my TF for months now and I generally run Revolver
With that I've had no problems with reboots except in the case of overclocking and intensive gaming
Other than in those instances using N64oid playing Starfox, I have not had major reboot issues and would highly suggest keeping an eye for deals on this device
On stock. Absolutely no rebooted or crashes.
Tell him to stop pressing the power menu, or to get the tf101.
The only time I get softboots or sleep of death is if I oc too high. Other then that, this tablet is rock solid.

the ONLY time I got a reboot was when I was O/C'd to the max and trying to play a specific game that doesnt seem to be tailored to our device in the first place. lol other than that, my tf is buttah. but to be fair the tf is a better device than the gtab. Im not sure if the samsuck made a better device from the original 7' to the newer 8.9 ones though....somehow i doubt it. Then again I am a little biased

It's really naive for him to blame this on Tegra 2 with no real compelling proof. Might as well blame it because it runs off of battery power too.
I'm running on stock and I've never had a crash or slowdown. Never.
Also running stock on 3.2 the ONLY reboot ive ever had was with a certain app, which is most likely the case with your friend also
I've had my transformer from day one. I've used Prime and Revolver and only had reboots when overclocked to the max.

On stock, the only reboots that I've had have been because I didn't reboot for a week or two or so.
As far as the Tegra 2 being the devices problem, I highly doubt it. It just seems like bad software on Samsung's part, or maybe a rogue app.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Sounds much more like a rogue app, than anything. Quiet a few people seem to like Samsung's touchwiz interface, but then again, my sister had an OG Galaxy S phone that was a total turd.
To blame a processor sounds more like a fanboy of some sorts. There's a thousand things inside these tabs that could cause slow downs and crashes hardware wise.
Mine hasn't done anything weird since I've rooted. I'm also very lucky to run @1.6 Ghz flawlessly
I've had slowdowns,a few crashes and reboots but only if I fill up the device with boatloads of apps
I generally blame Honeycomb being bad.
Tegra 2's real fault lies with its video decoding on HD videos
Well I don't think I have ever had a reboot in my 4 months ownership of the transformer so far.
I do get little sluggish slow response sometimes but I think that has to do with honeycomb rather than tegra 2. Honeycomb is a fantastic OS but it does suffer from occasional slowdowns sometimes. Something ICS will iron out I'm sure.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I never had any problems before I rooted it and started overclocking to stupid levels. I haven't had any problems since I stopped overclocking it past 1600 though. (Problems as in rebooting, my Netflix seems to be ****ty though, when I have time, I'm gonna change everything and perhaps flash Revolver instead, although to be honest, I'd rather get ICS or CM9 when it comes..)
Although I own a TF101, I was forced to buy a new tablet with dock in a trip to San Diego (the TF101 screen died in the ride from home to the airport, I later discovered thanks to these forums that it is a common issue and I fixed it by opening and securing some of the screen cables) and so far I'm loving it!! it feels a hell more responsive than the TF101 (even with custom ICS roms) and, judging by the comments here, the hardware has great potential.
I rooted with the Sparkyroot app and applied the tweaks mentioned in the Development Area but I still think there's room for more improvement, the tablet stutters sometimes and we're having issues with the dock properly charging the tablet. I hope the developers become interested in this device and start creating great ROMs like in the previous models. I can't wait!!!
Cheers

Just watched the conference and the new nexus 7 seems pretty fantastic, listed with these specs that im very interested in
Tegra 3 Quadcore 4+1 SOC
1gb of ram
1280x800 ips screen
android 4.1 jelly bean
1.2 mega pixel front facing cam
paired with the fact its created by ASUS, and it is a Nexus device, means that this is now Googles new tablet Reference, pretty much any app that wants to work well on Google tablets has to work on this, this is VERY good news for us, as our tablet pretty much match the nexus' reference design spec for spec, im super excited to see what comes of this, hoping for some highly functional jelly bean ports soon
(i know the nexus includes things like NFC and such, but im not super hyped about that as we dont have it on out lovely tf300's )
Ive mentioned this elsewhere but HOW is this SO cheap compared to the transformer 300?!? The specs are the same, it has some extra features and costs less than half the price! I get that it is smaller, in both size and capacity but it seems very very cheap

It's certainly not less than half the price. The Nexus 7 16GB is $249.99 and the TF300T 16GB is $379.99. There is a cheaper 8GB version for $199.99, but that's still not less than half of $379.99. While the Nexus 7 has some extra features like NFC, it is missing other features found in the 300, like a rear-facing camera and Micro SD slot.

My mistake, i was basing it on UK pricing which is £400 for the transformer with dock. It still seems much much cheaper though. Similar hardware and i dont see how a micro SD slot or storage space takes away around £200!

No HDMI port

No SD card interface
I don't use the HDMI port often, but I do use the rear facing camera. I like the SD card slot.
NFC - Not sure about that technology, I have no use for it currently, but if you're going to be taking your tablet out on the town alot I guess it could be useful - but it seems to me if you are taking your tablet out of the house you'd want a rear facing camera, or a way to transfer the image to the tablet (SD card slot)? Also wouldn't you want to scan UPCs?
Judging that the nexus tablet and this have very similar hardware, will that mean that we will get similar updates that the nexus tablet would receive?

Prices of devices like the Nook, Fire, and Nexus are kept low because the related sellers anticipate making money off of the related app stores, be it Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or Google.
Nexus looks great. Still very happy with my TF300. I had the original Nook Color before. It was okay, but I wanted a larger screen and a keyboard. It makes for an entirely different experience.
I just hope we receive the JELLY BEAN update promptly...
Asus Transformer TF300 it's great but I think the Tegra 3 need more work, as it's very powerful on paper but I get lag sometimes whereas I shouldn't.
I hope Google engineers will polish JELLY BEAN up to a point where it will use all of Tegra 3 power.

Agree wholeheartedly. Project Butter to the rescue! :victory:
I can't imagine that this will take long at all to upgrade to 4.1. It's made by the same company that made the nexus so all the staff has had plenty of time to get it ready. The only thing that would make this take a while is their skin. However they have a very minimal and actually useful skin. Love the performance toggle. I see this out probably in less than a month. Plus it always helps to not have to deal with the carriers that phones and 4G tablets have to deal with.
Don't forget it's also using a different version of Tegra 3, they're not all the same. The TF Pad Infinity also uses a different versions, there's at least three I think. That bundled with the lack of a front facing camera and compatibility with a keyboard dock is probably what lowered the price. Still, there's no need for buyers remorse lol.
I just hope we get timely updates for 4.1, that's why I bought an ASUS tablet lol. They've had a good track record so far so lets hope they keep it up.
this tablet also has corning gorilla glass. and the TF300 does not. :good:
I am certain that we will get Jellybean very likely from ASUS, but if not from CM or other custom rom developers. ASUS has been really good with OTAs in the past so I don't know why they would stop now.
Personally I don't know that I have a use for NFC and I like the size of the TF300 plus the rear facing camera is very nice. Its also nice to have a micro sd card slot for the expanded storage. I am happy with my TF300 and look forward to running some Jellybean goodness in the near future.

I would buy the nexus 7 as an impulse buy, $199 that's little over an hour of work, if I could buy it over here in Holland.
Are the api's closely related, as in, could we easily port jellybean onto ics without a ton of problems like gingerbread to ics, or are we just going to have to wait?

One of the reasons I bought the TF300 was because I knew Asus was making the Nexus tablet and the specs would be very similar but I wanted a 10 inch tablet. This is great because we should get firmware updates super fast and the development community for this should grow also. I'm really excited about this. I may buy a Nexus for my daughter that has wanted a Kindle Fire for a while.
ihope jellybean come fast to asus developer and release it fast to fix bug of the tf300
Really liked the look of Google now and the smarter voice search as well.
If only LG and other phone manufacturers would update their phones,we'd all get to use these wondrous tools regularly...I never take my tablet out while driving (unless I'm watching old Simpsons episodes). Really excited to use it on here, but if carriers and manufacturers want to sell more Android products, they need to help foster a development community on a unified OS... I'm an android/linux /windows user (own an iPod, and went iPhone, 3g, original Droid, revolution), but I do admire apple's app store and their esthetic finesse. But that all could be better with android...
