Tip: your lockscreen can also have a live wallpaper! - Galaxy S III General

I've had my S3 since the launch date and I've only discovered this feature yesterday. While looking at some settings, the help text said "you can't have this feature enabled if you have a live wallpaper set on your lockscreen". I was puzzled since I thought you can't put a live wallpaper on your lockscreen.
If you press and hold the home screen it will give you an option for "Set wallpaper for" and then "Home screen, Lock screen, and Home + Lockscreen". If you tap on "Lockscreen", it will give you "Gallery" and "Wallpapers" (and possibly some other app), but not "Live wallpapers".
However, if you go to Settings > Wallpaper > Home and Lockscreens, you can pick a live wallpaper for the lockscreen as well. I only need to figure out how to have a different live wallpaper for the lockscreen and for the homescreen.
ninja edit: wow, just figured out that if you tap on "home + lockscreen" when holding finger on the home screen, it gives you the same option. Now I feel dumb.

:good: I feel dumber because I actually read that

Useless thread ?

IQ lowered with each SGS release .

Totally agree.....and we all endured this "right of passage"......and we all know the difference between a bit of gentle teasing and being offensive....I would also add that a bit of fun mixed in with the important stuff does actually help build a sense of community, and from that an atmosphere of "all being in it together" emerges where people really start enjoying helping each other.....but the gauntlet, nevertheless, must be run

I'm not that new to android and I didn't know so thanks for the tip!

People are being too rude on xda, if the community doesn't accept noobs, why not close xda to invite only? And, I am not new to android and never tried to use live wallpaper with lock screen, so this info are new to me.
Thanks

It's not that we are rude... XDA was never about servicing or supporting noobs.. it was never about end users coming to ask people how to do normal tasks. XDA is not a personal help desk. XDA was made for DEVELOPERS to come and collaborate together. It's pretty sad that people have become so entitled to think XDA is a community where you can demand things, ask stupid questions, and expect people to solve your issues for you. XDA was not created like that and honestly we should all be super rude to the people that really dont belong here so they leave.
You want a more noob friendly place, try android central forums or other end user forums... not developer forums. And this is just a general comment not directed at anyone in particular just in general XDA has gone way down hill and it's 100% because of all the noobs that have flocked here.
It's pathetic how lazy people are and expect others to do their work for them.
I've seen countless posts like:
Person A: "If you google it you'll find links"
Person B: "Can you post the links?"
Me to person B: "*****, what am I your personal google assistant?, go google that sh%t yourself you lazy ass"
What I really think they should do is create an XDA sister site called XDA-EndUserNoobSupport.com
I can honestly see why the more seasoned guys leave xda for a site like rootzwiki which still has noobs but a far number less..
The whole "well that's what xda is for" mentality is WRONG. WE ARE NOT HERE TO SERVE ANYONE OR HELP ANYONE! We choose to, but it's not OUR JOB to. the way some people make requests on devs sounds like a boss giving an employee things to do..

This is a community, if you follow the rules, you can ask anything (in the correct way), but others users aren't obliged to reply or make anything. If you doesn't want to to help out anyone, just ignore the thread and the post will get to last page ASAP.
If your mother didn't taught you, politeness is a good move what everyone should follow. I'll not continue to discuss it here, feel free to PM.

Quoting as bla bla, addressing someone's parental situation and in the mean time venting your view on the subject does not make you right or more polite. Shame on you.

I don't care if this place is full of Einstein wanabes, if someone comes here asking for help, you act nicely and redirect him to the apropiate place and not act like some self entitled ass&$ole because you know a few lines of code or like to flash your phone every week and think you are l337.
Jesus Christ, what is this place? Are all forum moderators like this?
I am pretty sure all those advertisement banners I see on the main page don't care if the clicks come from n00bs or l337 coders and neither do the people who actualy put money in to this site... my god, I ave like 15 posts on this website cos I only read, I rarely post but this sht makes me go crazy, self entitled mods here.... my god

Seriously? Thread closed?

EDIT: woohoo, svetius fixed it... no more "IPHONE" at the top of XDA!!!
Consider this a rant.
I ALWAYS come here to help XDA and our community. I don't believe anyone would doubt that.
I make one thread *HERE* where I comment on not liking the IPHONE FORUMS button at the top...
In there I inquire about having an ANDROID ONLY forum and a MICROSOFT ONLY forum... seems like XDA is getting too big anyway....
I then encourage people to donate to XDA (Like I have)....
and then I get called a troll by some mod I dont know, and my thread gets locked?
Forgive me for helping people here everyday.
Forgive me for encouraging donations to XDA.
Forgive me for not enjoying looking at IPHONE everytime I post about ANDROID.
Forgive me for having an idea to split XDA up into sister sites (like you are doing).
Forgive me FOR BEING A TROLL... that part is laugable. Being called a troll was probably the spark that caused this rant.
/rant
Consider me taking an extended break from XDA... if you need help PM me. I will still be lurking in the Dev section. Or trolling I guess?

to be fair to the op, the mod originally said "obvious troll is obvious". Then he post was edited reopened and moved.

Agreed, that's why I did it.
And yes, his post was edited. To be fair, I edited my op to be better, but before I could post that I cleaned it up, it was locked.
that seems like a small thing to close a thread up for.
I think that thread was a suggestion, not a complaint, or rant as you said.
a pure suggestion.
and if people were flaming/trolling it, its the moderators duty, and job to handle that, is it not?
but s15, by just reading the OP, you kind of made it sound like a "DO IT NOW" like a command rather than a request, i can see how the mod would get kind of irritated, too.
"the_scottsmen: Obvious trolls are obvious. It's a pity threads like this can't remain civilised...I'll re-open it for now and move it to General."
The way I interpreted his statement was that the thread wasn't so much the issue, but that some of the more extreme comments were.
My personal on the button: I have no problem with it. I'm with birgertime. This site started as a winmo forum and grown into so much more. Why wouldn't they want to advertise their new sister site? ios is a huge platform and I'm sure they would like those eyeballs to head on over here. Plus those mac fans love to throw out money, like for fart apps. xda deserves money, not so much apple.

To the Mod that closed this: This is not IRAN we do not need the "Thought Police" telling us we shouldn't express our consternation with a given product or corporate behavior. I would agree to personally attack another person is inappropriate But, the fact is; in a forum such as this we have the right to express our thoughts about these products. After all, isn't that how the development section got started by a bunch of us who were angry with the corporate Lameness and took to solving the substandard products on our own...?........ Or are supposed to be sheep and stay silent ??? Hmmmm ???
Frankly, I have seen so much worse so, why this thread you guys have stock in Apple ???

[Q] Debranding

Hi peeps. Im starting to get really ticked off by the branding string in the build properties.
What do i have to do in build.prop to stop the android market seeing my xoom as a verizon device and see it instead as a viewsonic gtab or whatever?
Why is everyone posting questions in the dev section?
Because they can't read
Sent from my Evo 4G using Tapatalk Pro
let me explain why...
its because i am a dev myself, and i have been here long enough to know that at this stage in a subforum's development no-one from the dev community ever looks in the general subsection
welcome to reality
also, you should understand this perfectly well having joined in 2009... or are you just a snob with a post count?
One might ask what he is implying you cannot read.
Nothing we say will help. Makes me sad they don't know how to follow the rules and have common sense. All you get by posting a question in a dev forum instead of general or q/a is people telling you to post in the right thread. Just do it and they will help.

a Dev? Are you kidding? His app is still stuck on beta test stage and they couldn't make it done....
Perhaps if any of you tight-ass teenagers had read my reasons for posting in this subsection (its the third post, refer to it if you please), you would think again.
And my app is not stuck in beta, the draft is on the market and all the beta testers have already received their free rc. They are all happy with it.
If you really knew this forum, you would not be saying those silly, childish things. And if you dont know how to help, speak less lest you hinder instead.

Wow. Do much hatred. Yes, technically questions don't belong here. But, if he had worded the post differently, nobody would mind. "[PROJ] debranding the XOOM let's figure out how to change the build.prop..."
Now, since we're already here and on the subject... anyone had any success with this?
Apparently being a "DEV" means you no longer have to fallow forum rules and you can pretty much do what ever you want. Sounds cool..
Also since your a developer shouldn't you already know how to change the build.prop?

DONT step on the DEV´s FEET!!!

There is a couple of threads started by the main Devs, that have been closed lately.
All b´coz ignorant and stupid ppl keep asking the same quiestions over again.Since they are superiour at devoloping roms, but have a hard time getting same questions all the time shuffeld upon them, time over time, the treads gets closed all the time to us uber users sad disapointment. If i had the power i would shoot all the wrong posters in the head, but i dont have the the power to do that. This is not a democracy, soo think before u post any stupid question that might offend the allmighty devs,or the treads might get closed.Remember,You are in the hands of the Devs, they have ALL the might to shut u down,We are ALL in the hands of the allmighty DEVS.
So ask ur self, can u live without the roms, can your life continue with an originar rom from lets say Samsung?Or are u here bcoz of ur curiosity? Are u here bcoz of the fun of trying lotz of diffrent roms?OR as me,just to try out something else?
I for sure can live with out the roms that codeworkz and he´s friends develop.Would my life be porer with out their roms?Nah dont think so,if there only were TW roms i would still be fine, but the option to choose is always better.Do i feel the need to kiss some devs ass to get googles latest, with all the bugs and annoying faults?Sure not.Im 40 years old,ive learned to hold my breath, theres no greener grass on the other side.My phone will still function as intended even without major Devs roms.
So,do i dont appriciate the work they do for free?Hell yes i do!For free?Well, some of us guys do donate,so for free isnt true.
Do i think Devs should be treated like gods?Nope,i think they should live by the same rules as all of us do,threat others with respect.!

+1 really fund with development on xda, but when Devs get to much
bs or noobish questions on their thread they just close it, instead of warning the person(s)
that are cluthering their thread and just in case off repeating theme selves just expell them
from xda for a period or FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!! this is what happens on most forums so why not here.
Imho this is still a forum about open source so why should you be invited only to get a
membership should we all be mail aswell to join?
Maybe cleaning up some (less used) sticky threads and getting more info, about using Q&A and the use off searching threads before asking, to new users would be something to consider ( maybe this can be done by first 20 posts opening a warning screen, that pops up at your screen, when you whant to post something that has to be checked within a scrollable popup screen) yes i know this needs some work by the mods but then youre probally done with noob questions and bs.

This outraged sense of entitlement crap is part of the problem and most certainly not the solution. It's not Devs that are making it hard work on XDA, it's people like you.
lol i opened a thread as well the other day.. makes that 3....but invite only would be good...
i admit i know only a little bit about Android and mobile phones, however as i work in a technical environment i understand the risks and what goes into developing.
again as i mentioned in my other thread.. XDA IS suffering as a result and it's name is being dragged through the mud across the net on other blogs and Developer forums. It's embarrassing and frankly I dont blame the Devs for leaving...
I feel like this is all targeted to CM9/ICS development, so let me answer this.
Hey people, calm down. We don't feel like gods at all, I can understand why you're mad, but hey, it's community's fault !
We spend hours and hours trying to bring AOSP experience to this device (and some others), and it's hard given the number of things Samsung doesn't do using Android standards. It's taking a lot of our free time, and gives us a lot of headaches.
That's one fact.
Now, you guys begged us to get an alpha, we gave it to you. What did we get in return ? The right to answers 1000000000 times the SAME questions. We made a Wiki, an FAQ, people STILL asks for dumb questions. They can't use google, they can't search a topic, they can't read, and they beg us to get an answer to their dumb questions. It's okay the first, second, third time... But when it's ALWAYS ALL TIME TIME the SAME, it gets boring, we get mad and arrogant, because we're doing all this stuff for YOU, and you can't even use the Thanks button properly. No, you come here and complain "Why **** doesn't work !!??", and you keep asking at EACH RELEASE if the SAME thing works or not, because you can't read the ChangeLog, or Google for specific terms that are inside it (like the Vendor libraries thing).
When you'll respect us, by doing a bit of work on your side, we'll get nicer. Codeworkx said it's your fault, and he's right.

@noobs - Enough is enough

Ok, this is now going to be a personal rant.
@Colossus: feel free to delete or lock the thread if it's somehow inappropriate.
@All noobs who seem to think I'm their personal support assistant or personal liaison assistant and therefore can't stop bugging me to hell and back by PM:
Enough IS enough.
You ALL have a FORUM right here in front of your nose where you can post your nonsensical questions - and there's even Google to answer your brainfarts.
If you bricked your phone - search this forum about how to flash back to Stock (yes, the answer to that has been posted now for a trillionth times) or post this question all over again as asking is obviously easier than making use of your non-existent brain.
If you hard bricked your god damn phone because you decided to disregard each and every warning - I AM NOT YOUR PERSONAL SUPPORT ASSISTANT - if you feel like you want to try the unbrick method posted by the the_laser on setool.net READ UP ON THE REQUIREMENTS and then do whatever you like; I AM NOT ON THE PAYROLL OF SETOOL.NET NOR AM I YOUR NANNY NOR DO I CARE.
Search yourself another idiot you can spam by PM about whatever fart you just made.
Thank you, this is what i have been trying to tell all, enough is anough, i recive tons of SPAM everyday just cuz they cant use the search button. I will no longer reply to people who PM me questions about the same subject someone else made a thread about and on and on, in fact, its like an infinite SPAM.
Feel free to speak your frustration on what me and b.jay say, Cuz i wont give one, enough spam is enough.
@mods feel free to tell me stuff, but we have had enough, these n00bs have already broken rules by spamming us and not using the search button, in fact thats 2 rules broken by n00bs
@n00bs we cant say this clearly enough:
ENOUGH SPAM IS ENOUGH, NO MORE PM'S JUST BECAUSE YOU CANT BE BOTHERED TO USE THAT GOD DAMN SEARCH BUTTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IM NOT YOUR SUPPORT ASSISTANT OR A LIVING FAQ/GUIDE!!!
WE DONT GET PAID TO HELP YOU, WE DO IT TO BE NICE, BUT YOU N00BS HAVE CROSSED THE LINE NOW
ANY MORE SPAM AND I WILL LEAVE XDA FOR GOOD (OR AT LEAST THE X8 FORUMS)
IM LITERALLY PREACHING TO MY CAT, AT LEAST HE ACTUALLY LISTENS
Thanks for reading and listening, hope this stays in your heads n00bs, In fact
@mods can you put this in the sticky section please, im sick of rubbish PM's from people!!!!!!!!!
STOP BUGGING ME GUYS

Edit:
I feel Noobs are coming to spam this thread.
Agreed.
I'm a moderator on a forum with over 3,000 members and I knowvhow it feels but with about 10-15,000 people viewing this forum a day , I can't imaging the terror.
--
I think you are right. Also I want to add that many members on forums think that it is a chat room and demand immediate answer to their question. apart from that they become really rude when you are telling them that it isn't right to behave like this on a forum. I like to help others but sometimes they are incompetent to do even the basics. This is what makes me furious sometimes. Ok we are not all experts or developers but we search first and read carefully. That's my opinion. Take care ;-)

Thanks for supporting the case.
I don't know about your experience, but it's tiresome when you get countless PMs from whomever asking about things that are either already answered (read: a simple Forum search would bring up the answer) or, won't tell a name to protect the innocent, idiotic questions about "can I unbrick my phone with setool2? if yes, how does it work? what do i need to do? could you please take my hand and be my nanny?" just because someone felt like posting something about it without knowing jack**** her-/himself.
If they don't get their so much desired answer in the thread then...
...we haven't stumbled across the post yet.
...we simply didn't feel like answering the same old question all over again.
...we may not know the answer.
...we found the question to be highly boring.
I just find the total unwillingness to try and do some research breathtaking - plus PMing when not getting the answer is what I consider rude behaviour as they seem to expect that we're their living root of endless knowledge.

Last time I received a message with request to 2.3 ROM. I thought that I'm gonna fall from my chair. I don't blame new members, but there is one good rule - think before you post, think before you do anything in your life. Fact that you are 12 or 50 don't dismiss you from that. We are offering you our time, and I love the fact that I helped somebody but there is a border of everything. Keep this forum clean and friendly. Don't cover yourself behind anonymous status - respect people. Peace. Tomek
Aha. And one thing.

Sorry wilbso, but this is rather funny than upsetting. Just do what I do: laugh a good one, then press DEL button. I got 20 or more mails on my YT channel/ hour, so I know what you talking about
Ignoring is a huge power! Keep it up!

Or you get PMs like "Can you recommend me best ROM" while this useless topic has now been covered in the Q&A for COUNTLESS times.
EDIT: You know, instead of deleting we should collect the PMs, reg a website and publish them.

first i make that clear: i have never ask a question through a pm which have been answered millions of times and there are tons of threads about it, i always use the search button.
i understand that its painfull to have many spam pm about stupid issues but from what i have see you people asking for this. To exlain myself, i have notice that when one of those stupid questions is asked, what are you doing?,you keep in answering it, i dont know why you are complain when the half or more thanks you have collect are from that noobs, as you say, and that useless questions.(i dont say that you dont make useful post i just say that those who asking a q usualy leave thanks).when you keep telling them the bla bla its common sense to think of you as their personal assistant.
To talk about myself i usually provide links in order understand that their q has already been answered
P.s. i am not writing this to offend you i just have different opinion
@at the guy who keep telling that he is gonna leave.... leave who cares you are not a dev

[HAVE A RANT] About the XDA Galaxy S2 Forums

Well, Not sure how long this post will last for, but we all need a place to rant.....So I have opened this post....What really gets on your nerves about the galaxy s2/galaxy s2 forums? please no mentioning usernames of users.....
Well, I wanna start.... WHAT REALLY IRRITATES ME IS.......
1) Users WHO DON'T read forums first! SOFT-BRICK YOUR PHONE?? Tough! The Forums and Each Dev and Even Sammobile tell you how to correctly flash your phone, what kernels to use....and STILL users think they know best, mess their phones up!!!! Everything has a risk....read read and read again!!!
2) The Post count to get into the Development forum, I think, it should be higher, maybe 50 posts, as in point one, users who got no idea what they doing, mess their phones up, and flame and go off topic in dev forum posts.....use PM or the question forum!!!!
3) Users who keep on about the same thing in Q and A forum....WHAT KERNEL HAS THE BRICKBUG??? blah blah blah.....read the sticky posts at the top, use GOOGLE
4) My main bugbear is....maybe a new firmware for a different country (going from XXLPT to XXLPX for instance) and loads and loads of people keep on and on for DEVS (who have a life by the way!) to completely stop dev-ing and base their ROMS on the new firmware version, when maybe one little thing been change between each firmware version!!! GIVE THE DEVS A BREAK!!!!
5) posts that say 'WHY YOU STILL ON GINGERBREAD when JELLYBEAN is a lot better?????' ..... Well, we pay a premium price for our phones, if I want to put a custom GB rom on, I WILL, in my honest opinion (my opinion!) JELLYBEAN is still not 100% stable, people have choices!!
6) My last and final point.... (I rant too much!) 'oh I changed my camera blah blah change DPI blah blah mounted and moved file to /system - and now phone dont work' - Well, Stop messing with phone then!!! Use phone what its created for, AGAIN like all Devs say, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! brick your phone....read the Q and A section....
RANT OVER>>>>>
Anyway, there is A LOT of things I love about these forums, HELPFUL USERS, GREAT MODS, AMAZING DEVS and very concise and understandable guides - even my wife understood how to root her SG2 (and she not a technological person either!)
ANYWAY leave your rants below
Only one thing: people(let us call them noobs for now ) post questions into General section instead of Q&A.. I really hate that...

Rants.
People who think they are better than the rest on here.
People who insist on telling everyone to use the search function when in reality (as shown by the posts) the XDA app is the method of choice and it has NO search capabilities that are useful.
People who state 'read my sig' but again XDA app does not show sigs nor signatures.
You people are most likely young and as such ignorant S. O. B. who think only of your selves with no consideration nor respect for others.
This is supposed to be a global community.
Makes one wonder.

Totally agree with the GB part likes I prefer ICS myself I find custom jelly bean roms are battery killers like. Even on a low display brightness JB isn't finished yet if you ask me. N Yeh give the devs a break they do so much for us n they don't charge for it either so keep yer mouth shut n hit the thanks button

Why would anyone close this thread???
Yeah, problem is laziness and an inability to read before posting. All the rest stem from this imo.
People who spend ages setting up a home screen to post on show off threads who have 3 different clocks,4 battery level widgets etc. Why even try to optimize if you're using duplicates.
( I'm very easily riled)
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Noobs who say something or ask a question that has already been mentioned in a thread and then someone says 'please search before spamming the board'.. < logically your also spamming the board so how about being a top notch fellow and helping the person out rather than telling them off. Christ.
What gets me riled up is how the forums, even if there are new versions of the OS, get stuck in an infinite loop and an endless spiral of Groundhog day repetition.
Code:
bool NoobQuestionsAndRedundancy = true;
do
{
Facepalm()
}
while NoobQuestionsAndRedundancy == true;
*Waits patiently for someone to correct his code*
I am sick of
People who fight like dogs for and against some big companies like Samsung, Apple etc.
People who shamelessly bootlick some bigshots here
People who unnecessarily thank some unimaginative posts from bigshots here
People who are arrogant and spiteful
People who insult newbies out of proportion to their silly mistakes
People who judge other people or thread just because of something happened in the past
The list is endless.

- Ridiculous ROM names ... 'Foxhound Revolver Ocelot' for example.
- Coming Soon posts - Post when its done, or STFU
- Huge signatures full of pointless images, lists of old phones and current specs ... No-one gives a f;*k
owwww where to start.
It's not only users, but also devs. hehe it's a rant thread so we can have a go
Devs who post an updated version every single day (full wipe prefered LOL)
Devs who post that they have created the fastest and most stabil rom
Faster this faster that .... my i9000 must already be 10 times faster than 10 quad cores running all at once
Users, all of what you guys have posted
disclaimer : No pun intended
Members who, presumably to make themselves feel better about themselves, spend more time searching this forum for excuses to moan at other people than they do looking for issues they can help out with. And there are a lot of these members.

And, to answer your question, there has been an element of whine on here for some time.
