Lol'd.
I didn't read the link but from the comments I'm gathering that they use some exploit in NFC. Which is fine because the first thing I do when installing a new ROM is disable NFC and freeze my tags app.
Nexus S (GMS i9020a)
Paranoid (1.6 - 4.0.4)
Matrix Kernel (CFS - 20.0)
Ondemmand (800/200)
Deep Idle (Off - Noop)
Live OC - 100 (400/800)
BLX - 98 (Inverted Apps)

Guess what? For it to work you pretty much have to violate the target's personal space and its already been patched by Google.

Now if they could only fix my secure element error!

What a terrible headline. This 'hack' is incredibly insignificant. How many of you keep your phone's screen on while you're not looking at it? None? Then you're not at risk; NFC is not activated while your phone's screen is off.
Somebody above said there were only three Android phones with NFC chips. Although I'm sure that was hyperbole, I still feel the need to address the claim. Google are activating one million NFC-enabled devices per week. The flagship devices from Samsung, Sony, Asus, Intel and HTC all have NFC built-in.

So IF you have a NFC device, and IF you run Chrome, and IF you haven't updated Chrome, and IF there's an active "hacker" in your area that actually goes places, and IF you have your phone's screen on and IF you get close enough to the bad NFC stamp, then you may get a virus.
I like how they say that Apple doesn't have this problem because Apple is better about pushing updates, yeah, I'm sure it's that and not that Apple hasn't pushed the bounds of phone tech for a few years now. (Read: No NFC or emerging wireless technology). Also, this exploit is related to Google Chrome, which is updated through the Play Store and has nothing to do with carriers as the article claims.
EDIT
Sorry, two separate hacks, but my point still stands.

Like I said earlier, I freeze tags and disable NFC. I don't even find it useful :/. For me anyways. And I don't run chrome, stock browser is better IMO (again).

Dear god I hope not. Chrome still needs a lot of improvement before it will be a good replacement. Hopefully the current browser will still be developed to keep it available for non-nexus devices that we can side load.

i work in finance security and there is really no way to stop professional hackers from getting into your system, if it has a data connection, they will find a way in, the nfc hack is just an exploit in the system, and if you let a rookie hack you with an exploit than its your own fault, other than that it is probably about 100 hackers reading every text you send, they come down thru the pipe using real data connections, and if they really want your info, they would just hack your provider, create a hiding vpn on their system and read every text you send and receive and no one would ever know it until a guy like me decides to do some port scans on our systems, but since none of you are billionaires , they don't want to waste time hacking into your petty phones, stop being super paranoid, if some of you guys where to goto Def Con , you would disconnect every thing you own from the internet.

Yeah, there many be alternatives to this specific service, but if this stands up it says that Google is no longer interested in openness.
People have been saying it's the movie companies pressuring Google. My question is why, since rooting alone doesn't mean you can bypass the payment service with Android Market. They'd still get their money.

Yeah that to! I could care less about overclocking with a dual core phone. I really just want this OS to take off man its been way too long and I think google needs to get in gear; if they don't windows will catch up and grab a huge chunk of the market shares. Im not asking for much but most the features that android is lacking need to be standard, one shouldn't have to root to achieve all these things (the list is long lol). For some strange reason I really feel like when all these wp7 nokia phones come out it will give them a huge jump! Everyone knows Nokia always had ****ty software but hardware is unsurpassed. Honestly, I think google needs to hit android with some more design that uses hardware acceleration or something different from the plain aosp look. Im not talking sense, or other flavors I hate fragmentation, they need to overhaul the design for aosp.

Stop reading any old tripe you read on the internet. The HTC thing isn't MALWARE. Thats just silly sensationalist reporting. You out to punish the tech idiots reporting that crap by going elsewhere for your tech news.
As for this, i'm guessing it's something like Android Lost, where you can send a push notification from the web (after logging on with your Google account) and your tablet will enable GPS or Wifi and work out where it is and respond back.
Try Android Lost to see what it's all about... It's unlikely to be a permanent tracker, more an on-request location service.

When an application can cause DAMAGE, in the HTC case, STOLEN PERSONAL INFORMATION, then its MALWARE, pure and simple, When its fixed so that only HTC can get the logs of what you type, do, use, your location, then it becomes SPYWARE. No need to try and convince me otherwise because of the amount and specifics of the data collected and inability to opt-out.
Nice try however.

ice cream sandwich for atrix?

hi all,
I went through search and did not find much about this question on my mind for this week.
its been bootloader unlocked and having gingerbread source code available.
I wonder whether atrix will get community build of ics.
i am honestly bored of f***ed up power management of android on dual cores.
i dont know what is problem here but
NVIDIA is not fixing their heating issues.
GOOGLE is not fixing up power management of android on multicore hard ware.
MOTOROLA the great we know ,is slow and lazy ass to move forward in ics for atrix.
i hate the day when i decided about buying atrix.
its bloody radiator and its heating temp. of 54celcius on normal use.
I am using cherryblur 1.4d and faux 123's optimised 1ghz kernel both latest.
i tried undervolting as well but it still heats up crazy.
I am honestly bugged with it.
may be I am totally wrong about my understanding.
i have samsung focus running mango and i prefer it for casual netbrowsing than my atrix.
I hate the NVIDIA for its heating legacy.
I swear on name of god that i wont touch anything with any kind of nvidia inside.
can we expect atrix to get better power management with ice cream sandwich which supposedly optimized for multicore processing.
I also for a brief time had both heating and battery issues with an over clocked kernel I decided to go to a kernel which was not overclocked I'm getting good battery life with no power management apps running and I never overheat anymore. Maybe ur issues can be improved with a new rom and Kernel?

drpratik: well... IIRC, didn't Google buy, or semi-merge with Motorola? That could help with the speed of things. Not to mention the supposed steps that are taking place in order to try to get devices up to date much more efficiently than the current pace allows.
As for optimization for dual-core phones.... you DO realize that there wasn't a SINGLE dual-core android device, let alone a phone, until the Motorola Xoom made it's debut, right? Which came out with Honeycomb... which is more than likely designed to use dual-core CPU's. There aren't really that many updates to previous Android versions shy of bug fixes when a new version of Android comes out. And seeing as ICS will be the first NEW Android OS for cell phones since Gingerbread, i'm sure we'll probably see it sooner or later... but probably sooner. Either officially, or from a modded ROM.
I do appreciate your response and that both ATRIX and XOOM run on same tegra2 platform.
I agree that optimization takes time.
But tegra 2 is out for at least 18 months.
I have high hopes for ics.what I dont like is android can't see the second core also forget utilizing.if android is not able to see also then why not throttle it down and put it into hibernate and use only when software can take benefit it.
I thought my battery is bad.I started using new battery but same result.
Back to point-- Google has bought Motorola for its patents portfolio to fight off apple attack and I will be really happy if this relationship proves fruitful for end users.
Lets hope for best.

Android 4.2 could be just weeks away folks, and rumors are already
starting to circle on what the Mountain View company is cooking.
But careful, this rumors come from a very trustworthy source,
so if you want to wait for Google’s keynote to see Android 4.2′s features,
we suggest you click away. But who can’t help to learn what
Google has come up with this time right?
Customization Center
OEM skins have been solved once and for all. With this feature,
OEM’s can build their skins in the Customization Center and publish them on the device,
leaving stock Android intact. The themes could have different ringtones, backgrounds, launch themes and others of the sort.
Project Roadrunner
Your battery life is about to triple. Google has been rumored to focus a lot on
battery life in this release of Android. Remember how Project Butter increased
the speed of your device and how drastic the change was? Well get ready,
because battery life is about to get an upgrade..without switching batteries of course.
Google Play
Google Play is up next, and the rumor is more features are going to be
added to the ever growing app store. New features include promotional campaign
notifications, easier in-app transactions, more billing options and more.
Google Now
If you want information then and now, Google Now will become your best friend.
But Google Now is about to get even more helpful, with the rumored features of
being able to control the brightness, turn on and off system functions and more.
Video Player
The video player for Android is pretty basic, so the rumor is that Google decided
to update to add more API’s for developers and give it a UI makeover.
Conclusion
There we have it folks, Android 4.2 laid out. Taylor from AndroidandMe’s source
has always been right on the money with other information so we would be
shocked if any of this information is wrong above.
So, who’s cooking the Key Lime Pie tonight?

Edit thx
Yeah, I'm not buying this. Google Play, Video Player and Google Now are more like software updates and won't require a new version of the operating system (remember, this isn't Apple we are talking about). The customization thing might be true, but it won't get you the latest updates just like that since the hardware components are different with pretty much every phone, just like ivan1real said. And the triple amount of batterylife won't really happen just because of the different hardware components. There really aren't that many "magical" ways to increase the batterylife unless you know how the hardware works exactly to control the battery usage properly (and even then, it would be up to the manufacturer, not Google, to optimize their drivers).
Also, there have been hints that the next Android version would still be called Jelly Bean much like 2.0 and 2.1 were both called Eclair:
According to this article in Androidpolice.com, the Nexus phone build numbers first letter usually tell you the what the operating system's name is. For example, with Gingerbread, everything began with G, with ICS with I and now with JB with J. So, if the Android 4.2's build numbers also start with J, it couldn't be called Key Lime Pie.
Perhaps request a mod to sticky this. This is sure to stir up some posts and seems like a good thread to use. Great job on the OP though..it's a good intro and nicely done!
Oh and you should link the source. You mention the source but no link??

Perhaps request a mod to sticky this. This is sure to stir up some posts and seems like a good thread to use. Great job on the OP though..it's a good intro and nicely done!

Well.. I'm just thinking it may be helpful to have 1 place for all the rumors and bs. I know it would take a miracle for there not to be anymore nonsense threads about Key Lime Pie coming soon but... and since the OP is done well, and not just a simple sentence... why not

+1, has the potential to be huge. I hope manufacturers can get the updates out a helluva lot quicker. Love the sound of road runner too. Seems too good to be true tbh
Roadrunner, the only thing android really needs.

Roadrunner is interesting.......but it's a shame Samsung will take all the improvements, as usual, and mess them up with TW.

You sure you are talking about Android? Seems like you are confused between iOS6 and KLP...
Sounds unlikely. With so few devices on jellybean, it's unlikely that android 4.2 will be released this year. Besides, there's usually only one major android update a year.
like project butter, i forsee roadrunner would only work well on nexus hardware and screw up on other hardware chipsets especially sammy's closed sourced exynos...
Haha. Project Roadrunner. Now that's one thing crapwiz wont take part of.
Well, given Sammy screw ups, maybe Sammy will rename their version project Wile E. Coyote

Hey Google where's my new Google Maps app?

My Nexus 4 got the brand new, sexy Google Maps app a couple of days ago but why isn't it on my N10 yet?
Anyone got it for the tablet yet?

Got it yesterday. They're rolling it out slowly according to a very mysterious and arcane formula that gets it to some devices before others.
Also got it, pissed they took out/killing Latitude! G+ cram-down
Dropped the apk here for the meantime: http://db.tt/h5bgqz68

Is there anything good about Google's staged rollouts? I really don't get the point. I hate them for their OS updates, and I hate them even more for their app updates.

Maybe it's because there are a half billion or so android devices worldwide, and if they all got the maps update at the same time and tried to download it all together, servers somewhere would crash. Just sayin'...
I know, they wouldn't do it all at once, but this is probably a good reason to roll it out over a few days. Also, they can fix some bugs that surface after that first day, or change something that everyone freaks out about. I believe they did that with the maps update.

Half a billion devices only? Google serves over 4 billion YouTube videos per day! Sorry, I'm not buying any bandwidth excuses. And how many of those half a billion devices are in China and don't even have the play store? And obviously they don't care that much about fixing things that bother people before they are widely distributed because Hangouts hadn't been touched 4 months after release. Anyway, they are supposed to test before release, I never signed up to be a beta tester.

Google knows how to load balance a server, so I doubt that's the issue. The second point is far more on point.

So in your mind, YouTube's servers = the Nexus update servers? Right. No. The fileservers Google's got open for Nexus devices have significantly less resources to deal with (if you'd like to test, try downloading a factory image-- it's not slow by any means, but you can pull data faster from YouTube, which is designed to handle that kind of load).
But bandwidth/service issues are unlikely to be the problem so much as bug fixes. Staged rollouts of a major update are the best way of catching early problems before they become widespread. You really don't seem to comprehend what QA testing is like for software. You can cover a lot of bases, but there is no practical way right now to test every device configuration in existence. Take the Galaxy Nexus: there are handsets out there running 4.0.x, 4.1.x, and 4.2.x, on every major carrier (sorry Verizon users) and in the hands of all sorts of users. That's one phone, and a lot of point releases (and a lot of different potential combinations of software and hardware).
If you don't want to be a beta tester or on the bleeding edge of a public release, then don't gripe about the staged rollouts. Products that don't have the luxury of this technique (say, new games, or Apple's newest Macbook Airs) get slammed with backlash because they need to deploy globally. It didn't take long in the second example for Apple to realize they'd screwed up the Wi-Fi chipset, but they couldn't exactly fix that issue quietly when the entire first batch might have been affected.

You do realize that there are some "normal" end-users who own Nexus devices, right? It's quite possible for someone to choose a Nexus handset because they like the look alone. You should be first in line to get an update if you own a Nexus device, but a consumer release should never be a beta test*.
*unless you're Google, in which case "perpetual beta" happens often. However, considering that Nexus devices are now being marketed as consumer devices, I find this position to be disingenuous at best.
Update came to me today. Haven't used it yet though.
