ice cream sandwich for atrix? - Atrix 4G General

hi all,
I went through search and did not find much about this question on my mind for this week.
its been bootloader unlocked and having gingerbread source code available.
I wonder whether atrix will get community build of ics.
i am honestly bored of f***ed up power management of android on dual cores.
i dont know what is problem here but
NVIDIA is not fixing their heating issues.
GOOGLE is not fixing up power management of android on multicore hard ware.
MOTOROLA the great we know ,is slow and lazy ass to move forward in ics for atrix.
i hate the day when i decided about buying atrix.
its bloody radiator and its heating temp. of 54celcius on normal use.
I am using cherryblur 1.4d and faux 123's optimised 1ghz kernel both latest.
i tried undervolting as well but it still heats up crazy.
I am honestly bugged with it.
may be I am totally wrong about my understanding.
i have samsung focus running mango and i prefer it for casual netbrowsing than my atrix.
I hate the NVIDIA for its heating legacy.
I swear on name of god that i wont touch anything with any kind of nvidia inside.
can we expect atrix to get better power management with ice cream sandwich which supposedly optimized for multicore processing.

I also for a brief time had both heating and battery issues with an over clocked kernel I decided to go to a kernel which was not overclocked I'm getting good battery life with no power management apps running and I never overheat anymore. Maybe ur issues can be improved with a new rom and Kernel?

Officially? No one knows if it will get it at all or not until something leaks. Unofficially, it depends on how active the dev community gets. Short answer is, no on knows.

Also does anyone know if/when we will get Jellybean? lol

You're kidding right? Motorola is "slow and lazy" in regards to ICS for our Atrix ....really? You're right because ICS is NOT YET available lol.

sounds to me like this guy just got a bad phone (hardware), it happens.
should have returned that sucker right away.
if it bothers you that much, just sell the phone, cut you loses, and get another brand.

That's just the boot animation.

Yes, that seems to be just the boot animation...
However I'm confident that sooner or later will get ICS through unofficial channels like XDA.
Patience is a virtue.... a virtue I don't have unfortunately.

Its not question of availability.have they upgraded all their androids to latest versions? I dont think so.
I know its carrier who slows down update delivery.
When company is already putting out atrix2, do you think we will get ics that easily.?
I will be happiest of lot even if they declare that they are going to upgrade ATRIX to ics.

Which rom are you using?
I will surely give it another chance .
Kindly share the rom.
My main grudge is why do they not optimize their software to get benefited out of dual core processing? ??
As I am not even remotely related to programming or anything with engineering,I understand it may take time to optimize.
but for company like Google how difficult is it to optimize their code for multicore processing???

drpratik: well... IIRC, didn't Google buy, or semi-merge with Motorola? That could help with the speed of things. Not to mention the supposed steps that are taking place in order to try to get devices up to date much more efficiently than the current pace allows.
As for optimization for dual-core phones.... you DO realize that there wasn't a SINGLE dual-core android device, let alone a phone, until the Motorola Xoom made it's debut, right? Which came out with Honeycomb... which is more than likely designed to use dual-core CPU's. There aren't really that many updates to previous Android versions shy of bug fixes when a new version of Android comes out. And seeing as ICS will be the first NEW Android OS for cell phones since Gingerbread, i'm sure we'll probably see it sooner or later... but probably sooner. Either officially, or from a modded ROM.

I do appreciate your response and that both ATRIX and XOOM run on same tegra2 platform.
I agree that optimization takes time.
But tegra 2 is out for at least 18 months.
I have high hopes for ics.what I dont like is android can't see the second core also forget utilizing.if android is not able to see also then why not throttle it down and put it into hibernate and use only when software can take benefit it.
I thought my battery is bad.I started using new battery but same result.
Back to point-- Google has bought Motorola for its patents portfolio to fight off apple attack and I will be really happy if this relationship proves fruitful for end users.
Lets hope for best.

Awesome a noob!
bL33d i love how you call me a new noob but i can guarentee ive had more android phones than you.
All im saying is to have bought a Fascinate and to have sooo many quirky problems....like GPS and the slow to get 2.2 Froyo. Its disapointing when a phone with such great hardware has to wait for a os update. And now gets KO'd by a dev phone which sets the standard for the next year as the first nexus did.
Makes you admire how Apple runs there business. You know what your getting with them. With Android is Awesome hardware with hit or miss with updates to the OS. Samsung has had a bad reputation with OS updates!!!

If the hardware is the same or very similar to that of the Fascinate and other SGS phones, wouldn't that mean that future updates would be easier to port? I'd think that would make the phone more desirable personally.

The i-9000 is different from the Vibrant, Captivate, Epic, and Fascinate, yet things that work on one were able to be ported to the others. Voodoo lagfix, BLN, Voodoo color and I'm sure there are others changes that have been ported. Having hardware that is very similar in how it works is a great start. If the next Nexus device is based on the SGS lineup, it should make it easier down the road for development.

Swyped from my Evo on steroids.
oh i hope so. this would be nice.
There is no way you can know that and as far as gingerbread icons the only one I can see good enough to make out is the battery icon, and thats not a GB one. In GB the battery is standing up, where in that pic it is laying down like 2.2. And what I'm assuming is the alarm next to the battery it seems more like the old one which is a little bigger than the gingerbread one.
Looking at it again the signal is green, but thats the one one I would say is gingerbread like.

I read yesterday that the quad cores aren't likely to hit the shelves until Christmas. That seems to line up with the way carriers release phones. Roll out the dual cores early this year, and the quad cores for the holidays.
Honestly unless the quad cores offer a significant improvement in power consumption, I'm not sure that it will be that much of an improvement over the dual cores.
The killer feature on all phones, at least at the current level of functionality, is battery life. Put it this way: would you rather have an EVO that was twice as fast (or had twice the data speed, for that matter), or one with a battery that lasted twice as long. I think most people (techies and otherwise) would answer #2.
i don't expect a sense/ginger update from sprint until spring or later. too bad that will be the last official upgrade for the evo!

Each nightly doesn't really change all that much, development has been really slow on cm7 lately. But I know what you're trying to say, even if it was unnecessary and makes you look like a hater.
MOST nightly updates improves on previous builds...occasionally something gets borked...but that's why you:
nandroid your "last" stable build
nandroid your "last" stable ROM
OR
you don't touch the nightlies until you get stable builds...then again...lots of us like the bleeding edge or we won't be going thru these forums as it is...
Gingerbread is cool...and the nightlies are very stable at this point...worthy to be a daily driver. Whether you update nightly to nightly that is up to you.
Lets not flame those that are praising the nightlies...especially when they feel that the nightlies are daily driver worthy to THEM.
I'm hoping we will get an official OTA within the next month or two, or at least a source release from HTC before then. HTC is by far the best manufacturer about pushing out updates. Samsung and LG just straight don't care, and Motorola is slow. I read an article on Engadget a few weeks ago about how HTC has been very good about supporting it's older devices, updating half of them to Froyo last year. Ah, found it: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/...htc-most-eager-to-provide-android-2-2-updat/#
I'm loving the current gingerbread roms, using evervolv right now, but I'm really missing 4G, properly working GPS, and sense in general haha.
Praise all you want in the cm7 thread.

I could barely understand what you are asking for, but I doubt Quad Cores will give you good battery life. The Atrix is already big enough with its dual core CPU and somewhat mediocre battery life. I would say go with the Atrix, thing is a beast once you flash a custom ROM onto it!
tegra 3 i heard it has an extra core (5 instead of 4) for idle processing so that instead of all the cores running at low speeds it has only one running to conserve battery or so nvidia said

Atrix would be the best phone ever if it had a 4.5+inch screen, 4inch is small nowadays.
In my opinion, the Atrix is the best all-rounded phone I've ever owned.
Snappy speed, perfect sized screen, excellent battery life, good loudspeaker, lots of memory

Yes, 4+1 as they say. I believe its clocked are 500mhz for small tasks
I still think the Atrix is an awesome phone. I just purchased one over the Atrix 2.
How big of a freaking phone do you want in your jacket or pants pocket? I don't know about you, but I don't want a huge device in my pocket. I want a size that is large enough to get stuff done, but not be so huge where it sucks down the battery and becomes a pain to carry around.
I really think a 4.3" screen is the limit. I liked the smaller 4" screen on the Atrix better because it would obviously suck a little less battery down and its just the right size with a case on it.
HTC just announced the One X with a 4.7" screen?! I mean c'mon, WTF, if you want to carry that beast around thats great, but have fun.
The "bigger is better" theory with cell phone screens does not ring true for me.

I think yes. It's cheaper and easier to use the same code.
Consider we're talking about motorola. That UI is for OMAP devices and Atrix isn't equipped with OMAP. We'll see all together.
I doubt the UI will be different just because the processor is. With it so deblurred, you gotta wonder why they even bother redoing any part of it. They can just include the bloat they want as apps without messing with the framework. Maybe the carriers are insisting on crippling some features.
Code is written in high level programming language like C++.

Its the same case as why the Photon and Atrix got a different, uglier and sluggish Blur instead of the one that came with all the Motorola phones equipped with OMAP4 chips.
Heck, the ICS Blur we see on our Atrix might even be the original ugly Android4 blur that is available for download everywhere.

Agreed.
Heck the launcher on the initial Froyo builds was so much more faster!
And then the rest of the Motorola phones comes out, and guess what ? Atrix is suddenly sluggish? I mean seriously?
I actually complained about screen switching being TOO fast on the Froyo build lol... ooops.
GB update was weird for me, it worked GREAT for a long time, then it started getting buggy and sluggish, I factory reset it like 4 times with new blur accounts etc, and nothing helped, finally rom'd it the other day and couldn't be happier..

If reports are correct (that Webtop has been replaced with tablet mode plus some candy), then the only solution that is rational is to run a headless Linux disttro and RDC into it.
Even if all the bits of code needed to spin up X are opensource, it is going to be a huge pain for somebody to port it over to ICS. And some items (such as the kernel mod that mux's inputs to both X and 'droid) I do not beleive are avaiable.
Using an RDC aproach makes it is fairly easy to put a distro of your choice on the Atrix though, so that is a plus.
To me the question would be if I was to use a full screen RDC to an 'ux desktop, or just bring up a window to the app that I want. Really need to see how it all plays after we get the real Tegra drivers for ICS out.

Overclocking Possibilities

Even though the GS4 already is clocked at 1.9 GHZ what are the possibilities for overclocking? 2.3 GHZ?

Most likely. The htc one can get around 2.0ghz for some people. Gotta factor the heat in. It depends

It depends where you want to draw the line, more performance with less stability, or slight increase of performance and good stability. The S3 was 40% overclockable, i think 2.1ghz was the max, althoug im not sure it was stable and cool at those speeds

Ya but as far as i know on the s3 that ended up being a math error in the kernel and it was really only 1.9ish.
This device might get really hot..

No it was not. Even today's kernels can go up to 2.1

Shrug.. believe whatever you want.. but there was alot of discussion a while back in ktoonsez kernel thread about it as he fixed some math that they all used for the s3 kernels that was giving out the wrong frequency, thus the 2.1 clock speed.
Feel free to believe yours is actually 2.1 though!

Math was fixed. Ive seen maybe two people with 2.1 tho highly unstable. Very highly unstable

The people with great CPU's and good heat dissipation will probably be able to hit 2.7 Ghz. :good:

lol noob he didnt prove me wrong, i was talking about the s3... go back under your rock
Samsung SoC are never the same, as evidenced with the S3. I would expect the S4 will be the same.
There will be an extremely small amount of people who will be able to push there CPU a hundred hertz or two higher do to luck of the batch, but other then that I would guess stable OC's at 2.3 to 2.4ghz. The hardware in the GS4 is top notch so I have high hopes for it! If I can slam 2.2ghz stable for a couple months solid, I would be tickled ^^

2.1ghz is possible on S3, go check in 747 forums and see for yourself

Can we please stay on track? This isn't the S3 forum. I understand you have a point to make but so does everyone else but in the right section. Just take it to private messages
Not trying to be a **** but this S3 discussion needs to stop so we can discuss S4 overclocking.

We are on track, evolution on the S3 can probably be taken into consideration for the S4. Stop being to soft about where the thread is heading. Like ktoon said himself, 2.7 on the S4, that does look like the 40% i was referring to about the S3. So my point is made and it does have a lot to do with this thread.

Basically this sums it up... most noobs out there who know nothing about the s3 think it ran at 2.1 because the math error was not fixed for a very long time. Once it was fixed, only a couple of people with a golden processor could actually set the dial to 2.1, and even those people crashed within a couple of minutes.
Not gonna argue with a known troll... loved watching your angry rewrites of your post over and over though!
As to talking about the s3, it was being discussed as a comparison... if the s3 can overclock X much, then the s4 can probably do something similiar. Since ktoonsez was nice enough to take a guess at what the s4 will do, we dont have to speculate as much now.
HAHAHAHAH, known troll!!! HAHAHAHAH Good one!
You just messed up, you cannot live with the fact that i was right and you were wrong. I never did say it was stable, you just assumed i did. You just cannot say "hey polish, i'm sorry for being such a newb, you were right, the S3 can run a 2.1ghz and that math problem turned out to be fixed anyways"
The difference between me and you is that I speak the truth, you in the other hand call others noobs when clearely, you are the noob here and to try and save yourself, you try to make other look bad.

Bump?
I feel like this thread was never answered. I have recently rooted my phone for the first time, and I have been trying to overlook it with no such luck. I watched a few videos, and even posted a thread on Linus Tech Tips, but they are not as focused on phones as this site is. They sent me here and wished me luck on overclocking my phone. So to get to them point, I have no clue how to overclock my GS4 SGH-I337 on AT&T. I did successful root it, and I used root checker to make sure. I am hoping that you guys can help me, or redirect me to a forum that may have already explained in detail how to overclock.
Thanks!
