Overclocking Possibilities - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Even though the GS4 already is clocked at 1.9 GHZ what are the possibilities for overclocking? 2.3 GHZ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app

Most likely. The htc one can get around 2.0ghz for some people. Gotta factor the heat in. It depends

It depends where you want to draw the line, more performance with less stability, or slight increase of performance and good stability. The S3 was 40% overclockable, i think 2.1ghz was the max, althoug im not sure it was stable and cool at those speeds

Ya but as far as i know on the s3 that ended up being a math error in the kernel and it was really only 1.9ish.

This device might get really hot..

Shrug.. believe whatever you want.. but there was alot of discussion a while back in ktoonsez kernel thread about it as he fixed some math that they all used for the s3 kernels that was giving out the wrong frequency, thus the 2.1 clock speed.
Feel free to believe yours is actually 2.1 though!

Math was fixed. Ive seen maybe two people with 2.1 tho highly unstable. Very highly unstable

The people with great CPU's and good heat dissipation will probably be able to hit 2.7 Ghz. :good:

lol noob he didnt prove me wrong, i was talking about the s3... go back under your rock

Samsung SoC are never the same, as evidenced with the S3. I would expect the S4 will be the same.

There will be an extremely small amount of people who will be able to push there CPU a hundred hertz or two higher do to luck of the batch, but other then that I would guess stable OC's at 2.3 to 2.4ghz. The hardware in the GS4 is top notch so I have high hopes for it! If I can slam 2.2ghz stable for a couple months solid, I would be tickled ^^

Can we please stay on track? This isn't the S3 forum. I understand you have a point to make but so does everyone else but in the right section. Just take it to private messages
Not trying to be a **** but this S3 discussion needs to stop so we can discuss S4 overclocking.

We are on track, evolution on the S3 can probably be taken into consideration for the S4. Stop being to soft about where the thread is heading. Like ktoon said himself, 2.7 on the S4, that does look like the 40% i was referring to about the S3. So my point is made and it does have a lot to do with this thread.

Basically this sums it up... most noobs out there who know nothing about the s3 think it ran at 2.1 because the math error was not fixed for a very long time. Once it was fixed, only a couple of people with a golden processor could actually set the dial to 2.1, and even those people crashed within a couple of minutes.
Not gonna argue with a known troll... loved watching your angry rewrites of your post over and over though!
As to talking about the s3, it was being discussed as a comparison... if the s3 can overclock X much, then the s4 can probably do something similiar. Since ktoonsez was nice enough to take a guess at what the s4 will do, we dont have to speculate as much now.

HAHAHAHAH, known troll!!! HAHAHAHAH Good one!
You just messed up, you cannot live with the fact that i was right and you were wrong. I never did say it was stable, you just assumed i did. You just cannot say "hey polish, i'm sorry for being such a newb, you were right, the S3 can run a 2.1ghz and that math problem turned out to be fixed anyways"
The difference between me and you is that I speak the truth, you in the other hand call others noobs when clearely, you are the noob here and to try and save yourself, you try to make other look bad.

Bump?
I feel like this thread was never answered. I have recently rooted my phone for the first time, and I have been trying to overlook it with no such luck. I watched a few videos, and even posted a thread on Linus Tech Tips, but they are not as focused on phones as this site is. They sent me here and wished me luck on overclocking my phone. So to get to them point, I have no clue how to overclock my GS4 SGH-I337 on AT&T. I did successful root it, and I used root checker to make sure. I am hoping that you guys can help me, or redirect me to a forum that may have already explained in detail how to overclock.
Thanks!

ice cream sandwich for atrix?

hi all,
I went through search and did not find much about this question on my mind for this week.
its been bootloader unlocked and having gingerbread source code available.
I wonder whether atrix will get community build of ics.
i am honestly bored of f***ed up power management of android on dual cores.
i dont know what is problem here but
NVIDIA is not fixing their heating issues.
GOOGLE is not fixing up power management of android on multicore hard ware.
MOTOROLA the great we know ,is slow and lazy ass to move forward in ics for atrix.
i hate the day when i decided about buying atrix.
its bloody radiator and its heating temp. of 54celcius on normal use.
I am using cherryblur 1.4d and faux 123's optimised 1ghz kernel both latest.
i tried undervolting as well but it still heats up crazy.
I am honestly bugged with it.
may be I am totally wrong about my understanding.
i have samsung focus running mango and i prefer it for casual netbrowsing than my atrix.
I hate the NVIDIA for its heating legacy.
I swear on name of god that i wont touch anything with any kind of nvidia inside.
can we expect atrix to get better power management with ice cream sandwich which supposedly optimized for multicore processing.
I also for a brief time had both heating and battery issues with an over clocked kernel I decided to go to a kernel which was not overclocked I'm getting good battery life with no power management apps running and I never overheat anymore. Maybe ur issues can be improved with a new rom and Kernel?

Officially? No one knows if it will get it at all or not until something leaks. Unofficially, it depends on how active the dev community gets. Short answer is, no on knows.
Also does anyone know if/when we will get Jellybean? lol

Its not question of availability.have they upgraded all their androids to latest versions? I dont think so.
I know its carrier who slows down update delivery.
When company is already putting out atrix2, do you think we will get ics that easily.?
I will be happiest of lot even if they declare that they are going to upgrade ATRIX to ics.

Which rom are you using?
I will surely give it another chance .
Kindly share the rom.
My main grudge is why do they not optimize their software to get benefited out of dual core processing? ??
As I am not even remotely related to programming or anything with engineering,I understand it may take time to optimize.
but for company like Google how difficult is it to optimize their code for multicore processing???

drpratik: well... IIRC, didn't Google buy, or semi-merge with Motorola? That could help with the speed of things. Not to mention the supposed steps that are taking place in order to try to get devices up to date much more efficiently than the current pace allows.
As for optimization for dual-core phones.... you DO realize that there wasn't a SINGLE dual-core android device, let alone a phone, until the Motorola Xoom made it's debut, right? Which came out with Honeycomb... which is more than likely designed to use dual-core CPU's. There aren't really that many updates to previous Android versions shy of bug fixes when a new version of Android comes out. And seeing as ICS will be the first NEW Android OS for cell phones since Gingerbread, i'm sure we'll probably see it sooner or later... but probably sooner. Either officially, or from a modded ROM.
I do appreciate your response and that both ATRIX and XOOM run on same tegra2 platform.
I agree that optimization takes time.
But tegra 2 is out for at least 18 months.
I have high hopes for ics.what I dont like is android can't see the second core also forget utilizing.if android is not able to see also then why not throttle it down and put it into hibernate and use only when software can take benefit it.
I thought my battery is bad.I started using new battery but same result.
Back to point-- Google has bought Motorola for its patents portfolio to fight off apple attack and I will be really happy if this relationship proves fruitful for end users.
Lets hope for best.

Why does a stock Epic 4G on Gingerbread..

Using official EI22 getting Quadrant scores of 1700+ while other Galaxy S phones on official Gingerbread aren't getting as high?

Is this in the development section child?
If you have nothing productive to say/write, then don't say it.
In a way, it does have something to do with development because Verizon chooses to use touchwiz vanilla 3.0 on their gingerbread leaks as opposed to a touchwiz 4.0 esque battery meter style.

Did they finally convert from RFS to EXT4?????? They really did it right this time, because finally Bing is no longer the default search engine. Heck these single-core phones are more powerful than some dual-core phones offered from HTC, LG and Motorola. Hummingbird for the win.
I guess I'll stay Samsung all the way even when I replace this phone. They seem to always have the best hardware.

Fricken ridiculous, Why can't Samsung and Verizon make our phones run like that.

Fun with extended battery

Battery life is one option or... the official extended battery that doesn't make the phone gigantic and the following settings can make the phone like an overclocked core I 7
The following settings make the phone so smooth, no super tweaked governor beats this
Also the gpu is locked at 267. Nice with the f1 ics rom with working gpu acceleration.

Had an experiment with the interactive governor.
Got thinking maybe even if there's no obvious heat coming out of the phone the CPU PWM's might start screaming for mercy as they are not designed to be loaded for extended periods of time.
This seems to be surprisingly just as responsive as the 1.4ghz locked performance setting.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
so you want the phone to run overclocked at a permanent 1.4?
And you think thats a good thing for it?
I think I posted something at 12:26 a whole 12 minutes before your post where I did express a change of heart over the whole perm 1.4ghz idea.
In any case, if there is any actual evidence based on fact and science specific to the capabilities of the hardware in the sgs2 as to whether or not running high frequency at all times would damage the pwm's it'd be appreciated.

the fact that samsung's team of engineers don't ship the phone like that would probably be evidence enough

no, you said you were trying something else. Not that your original idea was stupid
I thought SGN used the same chip as S2, so shouldn't exynos 4210 be able to run 1.4 Ghz out of the box? It'll suck up a lot of battery though.
I am all for SGS2 users to boldly go forth with mods .
Just let us know at what point it explodes .
Overclock = heat and wear of components however will they wear out before you change your phone ??
jje
Yeah the sgn is the same cpu clocked to 1.4, however it does have space for a bigger battery

is it clocked to ONLY run at 1.4? Doubt it
Will probably have to start puttin the phone in the fridge..................
Nice to see at least 2 or 3 people post comments here relevant to the topic instead of fishing out useless remarks and insults. (Which seems to be the norm on XDA allot these days)
Ah so there is another product clocking at 1.4 stock. Good to hear.
My own research into the components haven't yielded anything concrete yet.
What I did find is that the maxim max8997 does have 7 step down convertors and 21 linear regulators.
I wonder if that means it has a 7 stage pwm? Who knows.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
OK looks like its the max8627 from maxim ic.
The chip has a Max load of 3.5 watts however in practice we must take car not to exceed the chips maximum dissipation of 1457mw or milliwatts.
Basically this is our total phone power draw envelope. Now I will begin figuring out what our limits are. Could be use full for people ovrrclocking up to 1697mhz.

I also do wonder about the age span of components when you do such experiments. At the very least if you do wear it out, the Galaxy S3 will be available (and if you do not want that one the S2 will be selling cheaper on ebay lol)

i think samsung under clocked the phone to save battery life
hey what kind of battery are you using,
tell me the capacity of the battery you are using
Overclocking is a bad idea for such a powerful phone in a compact design with no heat dissipation. My computers overclocjed to 5ghz but that's coz its water cooled. I would suggest if you want to use 1400mhz set it to a high threshold so its only used when absolutely necessary. A permanent overclock WILL damage your components

Snapdraggon 800

I wonder why Samsung didn't go for the Snapdraggon 800 processor? What are it's benefits over the 600?

Do you really think even a 10 times more powerful processor will make a difference with Samsung always laggy Touchwiz?

You have lost the sense of reality man... I owned every Samsung device since Galaxy S. So no trolling from me, but if everybody that has something with the Samsung way of doing software is a troll, then you're worse than an true Apple fanboi.
Back to the topic, a smartphone is more than a gazillion Ghz processor, it seems that even S600 clocked at 1.9Ghz is a little too much as temperature values are high as is also the battery consumption.

U do realize your still trolling right the Guy asked y didn't Samsung use the snap 8 processor the guy above said it isn't released yet answering the question
U on the other hand made no attempt to answer the question just said that that processor wouldn't have made a difference in laggy touchwiz that was completely and grossly off topic
Hence trolling
But this seems to be going nowhere so ill leave u to do whatever it is u trolls do

What a horrible attempt at deflection
I only commented because of your first post which insulted Samsung along with making zero contribution
Your second post said something that was already said
And your third post makes it out that your first post never happened
Anyway can u explain how your first post was contributing anything at all

This isn't about winning how does one win in a situation like this? I imagine the community could possibly benefit from meaningful contributions but someone winning? The fact that u said that shows me where your head is at that there is some imaginary competition that could have a winner going on now your trolling makes a bit more sense
Though said sarcastically ill take it as the end result is you leaving

i recon Because they wanted to make it a close as possible even performance mach with the Exynos??? The S800 would of been too much for the exynos Im betting and the closest competitor was the S600 although samsung could of underclocked the S800 but this would cost them more money, why Buy a more expensive chip amd not use its full potential because you have to create an equal performance to the 1.6ghz Exynos.. No point

Because it's not available until later in summer, simple as that.
Guys,
Welcome to the smartphone industry,
As short as 3-6 months,
Your device wont be considered "latest and greatest" anymore,
We have the best processor this current date, and i recon this is still future proof until the next 2-3 years and it will serve us well for sure.
We cant keep complaining since this industry is booming and competition is rather stiff.

Getting low benchmark scores.

As you can see in the screenshot, my D802 is getting some pretty bad benchmark scores(20k). When I'm lucky I can get up around the 30k mark, then when I'm not so lucky, I fall down to performance lower than the GS4. I know, I know, benchmark scores doors not really matter in real world usage. But when it comes to crunching numbers, I expect the processor to perform its best!
Just some info about my setup:
-D802
-CyanogenMod 10.2 Nov 14 nightly.
-The "Custom G2" kernel by Wootever
-My device is overclocked to 2.5Ghz (saw a little performance increase, BTW this OC was done within the "performance" menu in cm10.2)
-Anything else important?
And just if anyone was wondering, all my scores are better with CM than on the stock LG firmware.
Any magic I can do to bump my bench scores? I have heard some people talking about a hidden dial menu, but I can't seem to access it..
Any help, or just feedback is appreciated!

When I first saw the Chart I thought to myself "CyanogenMod" then I read your post aaaand "CyanogenMod". Most people have been complaining about low bench scores on CM nightlies, some are better than others but Ive read post about people getting in the 17k with CM. Flash the stock Rom then post your scores and see how much that helps the cause.
Edit: Quick note, I dont think I have ever gotten over 23k with CM on this device so I have experienced this as well, not just reading up on it.

All the AOSP roms that dont have major bugs are all performing very well. They just dont score well, its not at all indicative of the hardware, its the Rom. But if your having very low scores on a stock Rom then you might need to get it replaced. Do you have shots of the stock scores? Also make sure that your not using your phone for about 5 min before benching at all or else you might thermal throttle.
Edit: Make sure your governer is set to ondemand or performance and make sure your at 2.2ghz. Some CM roms stay stuck at 1.7ghz and im not sure if this bug has been fixed yet either.

Thats also what i find kinda weird, CM is way smoother than the stock ROM, but is worse when it comes to crunching numbers.
Any way I can disable the throttling without doing damage to my device?

A bounty for AOKP recently reached its goal and is going to be in development very shortly. Keep your eyes open AOKP Roms usually always bench better than CM. Its a great performance ROM with way more features than CM. Keep an eye on the original android thread. Developers name is rohan.

I have just always preferred the more professional look of CyanogenMods website and other services, and I guess that is what made me think it would be one of the best out there. I will keep an eye on AOKP from now on.

Many manufacturers are known for favoring benchmark apps in their ROMs to achieve better scores. I don't know if this is the case with the G2 but, if it is, then switching to a ROM that doesn't have that (such as CM) would make it appear less powerful on the benchmarks.
