Motorola ICS UI review: this isn't the Blur we used to know
Looks like the official ICS ROM will be mostly vanilla. With such a light touch and now being owned by Google, maybe they'll go full vanilla in the future.

We already have a few ICS discussion threads, you could have known that months ago by reading one of them.
This thread title is misleading. Offical release date is most likely Q4 2013.

No, I'm pretty sure it's next Tuesday.
MB860, CM7.2.0, Faux 026b1 1Ghz
And I stand by my original statement that it will be released on Friday.
Jelly Bean right after, on Saturday.
I am not sure if they would provide a vanilla UI for ATrix like we see in Razr.

I think yes. It's cheaper and easier to use the same code.
Consider we're talking about motorola. That UI is for OMAP devices and Atrix isn't equipped with OMAP. We'll see all together.
I doubt the UI will be different just because the processor is. With it so deblurred, you gotta wonder why they even bother redoing any part of it. They can just include the bloat they want as apps without messing with the framework. Maybe the carriers are insisting on crippling some features.
Code is written in high level programming language like C++.

Its the same case as why the Photon and Atrix got a different, uglier and sluggish Blur instead of the one that came with all the Motorola phones equipped with OMAP4 chips.
Heck, the ICS Blur we see on our Atrix might even be the original ugly Android4 blur that is available for download everywhere.
Sent from that Atrix.

Agreed.
Heck the launcher on the initial Froyo builds was so much more faster!
And then the rest of the Motorola phones comes out, and guess what ? Atrix is suddenly sluggish? I mean seriously?
I actually complained about screen switching being TOO fast on the Froyo build lol... ooops.
GB update was weird for me, it worked GREAT for a long time, then it started getting buggy and sluggish, I factory reset it like 4 times with new blur accounts etc, and nothing helped, finally rom'd it the other day and couldn't be happier..
Got to figure out a solution for webtop though, I used that a LOT.

If reports are correct (that Webtop has been replaced with tablet mode plus some candy), then the only solution that is rational is to run a headless Linux disttro and RDC into it.
Even if all the bits of code needed to spin up X are opensource, it is going to be a huge pain for somebody to port it over to ICS. And some items (such as the kernel mod that mux's inputs to both X and 'droid) I do not beleive are avaiable.
Using an RDC aproach makes it is fairly easy to put a distro of your choice on the Atrix though, so that is a plus.
To me the question would be if I was to use a full screen RDC to an 'ux desktop, or just bring up a window to the app that I want. Really need to see how it all plays after we get the real Tegra drivers for ICS out.

i really think google needs to work on perfecting froyo before they even think about rolling out GB, so far i don't think many people are really liking froyo to much, just doesn't seemed all it was hyped up to be to many.

NO WAI did you see the flash light?
I think they should let FroYo die and focus on making GB a better release, especially if they're numbering it as a major version. Honeycomb is nothing more than a name at this point. If they already knew what they wanted to develop for it, they'd just put it in GB.

That is correct, plus gingerbread
Personally I enjoy froyo a lot better then eclair and yes maybe it is not perfected however gingerbread is going to be a brand new version of android where as froyo is still a 2.x version of android making the possibilities in advancement greater then on froyo... Why waste time perfecting something when you have something better to perfect?

Think of Froyo like Windows Vista. It had improvements over XP but with a lot of problems too that left most rather unimpressed. So Microsoft decided cut short development of Vista in favor of developing Windows 7 which by-in-large has been well received such that we would like to forget that Vista ever happened. In the same way, I think we will forget about Froyo once Gingerbread releases, provided that it actually is a great remake of Android.
In other words, why waste time perfecting a buggy OS? Just start over. Rethink the OS from scratch with a few lessons learned from previous successes and failures.
Eh...just my $0.02.

Supposedly Gingerbread will completely overhaul the default Android user interface, to the point where HTC was being asked if they would even include Sense on 3.0 (they said they still would, unfortunately...) That's what I'm most excited about Android is pretty B.A. but it's ugly as heck.
Once again why waste time perfecting something when there is something new to perfect

So far they havent released minimum specs, some sites speculate since its based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core CPU that it will be the minimum. But a phone can dream.
The question is, if 3.0 is tablet based then what is the next update for smartphones? Surely not Ice Cream Sandwich? Tablet OS should work on smart phones otherwise they should use a different numbering system. Kinda getting ahead of myself since the x10 wont get as much as 2.2 officially.

From what I understand regarding 3.0, if the resolution of the screen is above a certain amount (ie a Tablet) then it will have the new UI and but if the resolution is smaller (ie a phone) then the UI will remain the same.
In this article on the german smartphone site areamobile.de, they say, that Honeycomb will stay a tablet-only OS in the near future.
But later this can change since they want to reunite the Android versions in the long term.
You could try Google translate if you're interested in the article

Considering the fact that I haven't used 2.1 since mid December and now currently running a stable 2.3 I'd say that no more updates is a little exaggerated. I never said that I expected an official se ROM, that would be a madness comparable to a iPhone user happy with the lack of flash. j & z have provided seemingly miracles in the past and I don't see why they can't again.

people use that garbage?
You are such a goon, why come into threads to complain that people want more out of their device than stock 2.1? Not everyone is a capitalist sheep that will let companies give it to them in the ass..
Am I the only one who creams his pants at the thought of the DINC getting an Ice Cream Sandwich port at some point?
HOLY CANNOLI.
I'm sure people will try, how well it will work is another thing.
Yep not holding my breath on the inc getting port of ics. Unless it is going to come out on a current phone then a port may be possible. But I would think the hardware acceleration will not work for a while as it will likely not have drivers for our old incs.....
While it would be great, I don't know if I need it. Out of curiosity, what do you see as the draw to ICS?
Why would you not want the latest android version?
Could you really just sit around, running Gingerbread, knowing full well that ICS is out there and you aren't running it?
That's a sad, sad thought amigo.
I'm too much of a geek to be cool with running anything but the latest android version..

It'd be about time that verizon got a nexus
exciting news that ice cream is coming up and hopefully for our phones too, will be watching here
No matter how much I love my AMOLED DInc, I'd rather have a brand new phone running ICS than trying to shoehorn it onto my "old" phone. I'm thinking ICS will be meant for phones with more power and RAM than the DInc has. So, I'd rather have a new more capable phone running the latest version of Android than cutting out features and decreasing performance to run on an old phone.
I was originally thinking I'd spring for a Bionic as soon as it was released and then use my upgrade later if I didn't like the phone. But hearing rumors about what's just over the horizon has me wanting to simply wait until January when I'm due for a subsidized upgrade. I sure hope the Nexus Prime is available on Verizon... if not, looks like I just might end up with an HTC Vigor.
So if I flash ICS, can I still root it with Unrevoked?
I had to do it, reading the Desire forums of people flashing 2.3 from HTC development site, and asking, sorry *****ing, that now they can't root... I had to say it.
I'm sure we can run it well, it's coming to the nexus s, which has a weaker CPU than the dinc.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If someone gets ahold of the code, you can believe that someone else will make it work. It will probably only be ASOP but who cares, it will still be ICS.

hi all,
I went through search and did not find much about this question on my mind for this week.
its been bootloader unlocked and having gingerbread source code available.
I wonder whether atrix will get community build of ics.
i am honestly bored of f***ed up power management of android on dual cores.
i dont know what is problem here but
NVIDIA is not fixing their heating issues.
GOOGLE is not fixing up power management of android on multicore hard ware.
MOTOROLA the great we know ,is slow and lazy ass to move forward in ics for atrix.
i hate the day when i decided about buying atrix.
its bloody radiator and its heating temp. of 54celcius on normal use.
I am using cherryblur 1.4d and faux 123's optimised 1ghz kernel both latest.
i tried undervolting as well but it still heats up crazy.
I am honestly bugged with it.
may be I am totally wrong about my understanding.
i have samsung focus running mango and i prefer it for casual netbrowsing than my atrix.
I hate the NVIDIA for its heating legacy.
I swear on name of god that i wont touch anything with any kind of nvidia inside.
can we expect atrix to get better power management with ice cream sandwich which supposedly optimized for multicore processing.
I also for a brief time had both heating and battery issues with an over clocked kernel I decided to go to a kernel which was not overclocked I'm getting good battery life with no power management apps running and I never overheat anymore. Maybe ur issues can be improved with a new rom and Kernel?

Its not question of availability.have they upgraded all their androids to latest versions? I dont think so.
I know its carrier who slows down update delivery.

drpratik: well... IIRC, didn't Google buy, or semi-merge with Motorola? That could help with the speed of things. Not to mention the supposed steps that are taking place in order to try to get devices up to date much more efficiently than the current pace allows.
As for optimization for dual-core phones.... you DO realize that there wasn't a SINGLE dual-core android device, let alone a phone, until the Motorola Xoom made it's debut, right? Which came out with Honeycomb... which is more than likely designed to use dual-core CPU's. There aren't really that many updates to previous Android versions shy of bug fixes when a new version of Android comes out. And seeing as ICS will be the first NEW Android OS for cell phones since Gingerbread, i'm sure we'll probably see it sooner or later... but probably sooner. Either officially, or from a modded ROM.
I do appreciate your response and that both ATRIX and XOOM run on same tegra2 platform.
I agree that optimization takes time.
But tegra 2 is out for at least 18 months.
I have high hopes for ics.what I dont like is android can't see the second core also forget utilizing.if android is not able to see also then why not throttle it down and put it into hibernate and use only when software can take benefit it.
I thought my battery is bad.I started using new battery but same result.
Back to point-- Google has bought Motorola for its patents portfolio to fight off apple attack and I will be really happy if this relationship proves fruitful for end users.
Lets hope for best.
Is anyone else becoming increasingly concerned there hasn't been many leaks?
By now I would have expected quite a few more leaks, but there hasn't even been a whisper of another one...
not at all, i would rather stick to a stable GB rom than use the buggy ics leaks
people seem to think ics is magically gonna transform the device...
ICS certainly transforms the device. Going back to Gingerbread from ICS makes you realize how inadequate the former is for such a wonderful device. ICS is silky smooth while Gingerbread feels like watching stop-motion photography. Livewings did such a good job ironing out some of the kinks in the ICS leak that it has become my everyday rom. You couldn't pay me to go back to Gingerbread.
+1 on this.
If you try a ICS build in your Note, and if you can flashe it without getting FC´s and some other errors, you never want to came back to GB again, because the speed and usability is just in another level.
I don't know why there is only one leaked ICS rom for the Note.
It's very strange when we see the SII with many leaked ICS roms and other devices too, but not the Note.
Is the ICS Rom for the Note the biggest secret Rom from Samsung?
The awesome thing is that all leaks are running at 1.2GHz CPU speed and the real one will use 1.4, so it will be even faster!

What is the relation between Gingerbread and ICS firmware for Note?! Who cares about GB?! I need stable ICS, I spit on this GB...
Since many devices already got the update, we won't see them as much now. Who knows, maybe the Note ICS update is around the corner as well.

Is anyone else becoming increasingly concerned there hasn't been many leaks?
By now I would have expected quite a few more leaks, but there hasn't even been a whisper of another one...

it just means ics release is nearing.
Actually the note is already fabulous using GB,
so for me there is no need to hurry into buggy ICS ports.
But ppl who live and love to test, feel free and go ahead
Probably wont see much since focus switch to premium suite. I think thats why we havent seen any leaks.

Samsung update priorities are just off IMO. Gimme a working ICS first for God's sake and then offer S-stuff. As for Angry Birds additional whatever - I don't give a flying faeces for that.

Personally I've found the relative regularity of frequency of Leaks to indicate solid Dev work..
I feel that the fact that we've had one buggy release, a blown out release date and now "promised' extras make me think that they're not getting much Dev done.
Its common practice to promise more when you've missed your promised release date, in an attempt to "curry favour" with the disaffected customers.
this looks promising, from same forum that leaked the last one

yet the s-pen is a gimmick of the note, why woudl they release software without being abe to show the potential of part of their selling gimmick? they woudl be shooting themselves in the foot by doing that
