DINC & ICS - Droid Incredible General

Am I the only one who creams his pants at the thought of the DINC getting an Ice Cream Sandwich port at some point?
HOLY CANNOLI.

I'm sure people will try, how well it will work is another thing.

Yep not holding my breath on the inc getting port of ics. Unless it is going to come out on a current phone then a port may be possible. But I would think the hardware acceleration will not work for a while as it will likely not have drivers for our old incs.....

While it would be great, I don't know if I need it. Out of curiosity, what do you see as the draw to ICS?

Why would you not want the latest android version?

Could you really just sit around, running Gingerbread, knowing full well that ICS is out there and you aren't running it?
That's a sad, sad thought amigo.

I'm too much of a geek to be cool with running anything but the latest android version..

It'd be about time that verizon got a nexus
exciting news that ice cream is coming up and hopefully for our phones too, will be watching here

No matter how much I love my AMOLED DInc, I'd rather have a brand new phone running ICS than trying to shoehorn it onto my "old" phone. I'm thinking ICS will be meant for phones with more power and RAM than the DInc has. So, I'd rather have a new more capable phone running the latest version of Android than cutting out features and decreasing performance to run on an old phone.
I was originally thinking I'd spring for a Bionic as soon as it was released and then use my upgrade later if I didn't like the phone. But hearing rumors about what's just over the horizon has me wanting to simply wait until January when I'm due for a subsidized upgrade. I sure hope the Nexus Prime is available on Verizon... if not, looks like I just might end up with an HTC Vigor.

So if I flash ICS, can I still root it with Unrevoked?
I had to do it, reading the Desire forums of people flashing 2.3 from HTC development site, and asking, sorry *****ing, that now they can't root... I had to say it.

I'm sure we can run it well, it's coming to the nexus s, which has a weaker CPU than the dinc.

If someone gets ahold of the code, you can believe that someone else will make it work. It will probably only be ASOP but who cares, it will still be ICS.

tmobile one was fake..and there is no android 3.0 yet
The phone does look amazing, but the biggest drawback in my opinion is the same thing that made me purchase a Hero; "Sense" (even though I love it). Maybe HTC's OS release times will improve, but I'm not so sure it'll be worth waiting so long for them to update the UI every time a major OS update is released in the future. I think it'll be vanilla Android only, for me, from here on out. I just need something with that 4.3" screen
I want it!!!!
My next device will have a physical keyboard and large screen.
HTC is coming out with phone after phone. But has no time to support the phones that are already out. This ticks me off a bit..
meh...i can wait. My Hero does just fine for me, and I can wait until October to see what comes out when I upgrade again
if it's sprint, where is their logo?
they won't sell a phone without that on it. Could be an early mockup, but still
I can wait...
Hero is the best phone I've had yet, if I can hold onto an Instinct for a yr, I can easily stay with this...
I want a full keyboard android phone. The moment sucks though
Meh. 4.3" screen is too large to carry around day-to-day.
I'll take a Hero-sized device with Snapdragon, thanks.

Maybe you should quit wearin skinny jeans then.
Im rockin this bad boy when my upgrade comes back up Oct. 11, 2010.
Ha Ha. Skinny jeans. I think im gonna rock the fanny pack again and pick this sucker up. Cant get rid of my skinny jeans.
I have been really impressed with Android so far despite the fact that the Hero is "officially" still stuck on 1.5...
I'm still primarily a WinMo user (personal phone: Sprint Touch Pro running VetVito's newest ROM), but my work got my dept a Hero as a remote-support/on-call phone, which actually kind of backfired as we were expecting it would have VPN (the Sprint Rep told us it would), so I have been testing out the custom Hero ROMs trying to find one with functional VPN (i.e. 1.6/2.0/2.1). No luck yet, but there are a couple new ROMs out in the last few days that I haven't had a chance to try yet...
But in regard to my personal phone, I am really hoping that Sprint will have a phone w/ a larger screen by the time my upgrade comes back up in Feb. I would totally go for an Android phone, but being that I have been primarily a WinMo user since ~2001 I am pretty exited about WinMo 7 coming out, too bad they won't have any phones actually released until well after I will use my next upgrade...
But I am praying that Sprint will either get the Android 2.1 update for the Hero or another Android phone that comes with 2.1 by the time I upgrade, I really like the Hero but I am going to go with the most current OS I can...
And Snapdragon + a bigger screen would rock!
I agree...I don't want a phone bigger in size than my Hero, but I would like a full screen from top to bottom with smaller buttons, the buttons on the bottom and that stupid trackball could go and I'd be even happier...
I saw a Droid on the train I take home and there is no way I could carry that thing around all day.

Let's be real for a minute... I want 2.1 as bad as anyone, and it's really frustrating not to have it since there have been leaked roms floating around for a couple months... but riddle me this:
Other than the Droid and Nexus 1, which phones have received a 2.x update?
HTC isn't any further behind the 8 ball than anyone else in this regard.

No phones from anyone anywhere have received a 2.x update. Period.
It looks like the Hero will actually end up being among the first, if not the first, to receive it.
No love for the trackball??? I personally love it...living in Denver I don't want to have to pull my gloves off to look at the widgets. I wouldn't mind an optical 'trackball'.
And for the size, I'm not sure yet if it's to big. I would love to check it out once it's out and see if it's pocketable and sized right for day to day use. My guess is that 4.3" is probably about as big as you'd ever want to go before it simply becomes a tablet...

I actually love how Google is keeping the surprise element of Gingerbread intact without any real leaks. I hope they don't allow a single substantial leak until the day of ota updating since I HATE feeling like a crack addicted donkey following a dangling carrot
We better get used to less updates anyways and be happy with our N1's as is without needing updates to keep us happy. Andy himself was saying that Android will eventually be just a once a year update: http://www.androidguys.com/2010/06/01/andy-rubin-android-updates-year/

Fixed.
The line just got cut a few days ago, wait a week until they start testing the n1 branch for it to leak.
if i recall correctly the froyo rom leaks didnt start until after froyo was announced.
by that logic im fairly sure it will take a few weeks to leak (if google follows the same weird update pattern it did last time.)
im fairly sure the nexus one branch has been in development for a while now, because the OS is finalized on the nexus (feature set wise). after the announcement the major optimization is done, and thats usually why there are several leaked copies of slightly different semi-final builds.
I'm not gonna get into it again(I already did during froyo release), but the android line isn't developed FOR the n1, it's developed primarily WITH the n1.
There's nothing N1 specific when they are doing feature sets. The Google Phone team does have an early heads up, but so does Moto, and Samsung, and just about all the big boys in the OHA.

Why is the DEV section for the Epic so shi**y?

is it due to not a lot of people having the phone ? inexperienced devs? even the roms that exist have one thing or another that doesnt function properly...there only seems to be one solid rom for sure and the rest are just ehh...just trying to figure this out im coming from a device that had so many roms i didnt know what to do and on this side theres really only 3 or 4 choices. is this a froyo deal?lack of people with the units or what?
My best guess would be most devs are waiting for froyo to drop since it should be soon.

Its tuff to dev something knowing froyo us coming. I started my theme to be used on my rom but decided not to cook a rom. It well be easy to port my theme for use with froyo. A 2.1 rom ported to 2.2 us hard. It would be easier to start from scratch with a froyo build

Its the same thing that happened with the moment, almost no dev support. 1 because its a Samsung, 2 because it was the second 4g phone, 3 because its $50 more.
The Evo community is thriving though.
Look at the Moment forum on sdx-developers, then look at the Hero forum here on XDA. Same thing for the Epic vs Evo.

I really hope people will develop for Epic, I really enjoyed the ROMs on Evo. But I liked this one better, hope I didn't make a big mistake! Oh well, I haven't even rooted this one yet, maybe Ill just give it a rest for a while. I know my wife will like that. Don't mean to insult the devs, you're all we got, just wish more people had this phone.

I concur, in a perfect world this phone (which I am getting tomorrow) would be so great that I wouldn't flash rom after rom for little things such as percentage battery mod or something. I would flash roms because it looked slightly different than the previous. and always felt like something was missing. I hope i can just be satisfied with the roms and such that are available for the Epic.
Don't worry u will have plenty of devving for epic. It will not be as much as evo though as evo has much more devs and is more popular and has been out longer. But we will have quality not quantity and after froyo we will see more devving. Most devs don't wanna waste time if the update is coming in less than a month (hopefully).

The only question now is when will we have the first builds ?
In 6 month just like with 2.2 x_x ( I guess )
Are they going to ruin 2.3 just like they did with 2.2?
No one ruined 2.2 the sgs phones are essentially programed/built differantly. The main reason it hasn't come out officially(besides leaks) is because of th bugs. Personally I would first tackle 2.2 rather then hoping for 2.3 which just was released.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I guess, 2.3 update will be esaier for Samsung. At moment, 2.1 - Touchwiz supports such lang what vanilla 2.1 don't (east-eu: sl, cz, hu, ro, etc...)...
I think, Samsung don't want/know translate 2.2 for these langs too, but 2.3 Android is officially supoorts almost all EU langs.
I guess we will get 2.3 before end of January.
Just to highlight thats from Samsung India, there is no reason to take it as being an official Samsung reply or something that will happen.
I can't wait for Ginger Beard.

Some of you don't realise that 2.1 and 2.2 is mainly optimise for HTC's hardware. When 2.2 came out, Samsung's engeneer had to rebuit many drivers and reprogram a lot of stuff to get it working.
Now, with Nexus S, Google themselve are working on a native built so porting will most likely be a peace of cake (or cookie ). Samsung will most likely just put their bloatware in top and woala!! Optimized built!
wow, this sounds good! hope we'd get stock google os with none of samsung's crapware in it

My old nokia 5800 even working faster... and needed much less restarts!
Nice I don't think it's gonna take a long time as the nexus S will be running 2.3 and it is almost the same hardware as the galaxy S so it should be easier to adapt 2.3 for samsung. 2.2 was developt by google for HTC Nexus one, but 2.3 has been developt for samsung. So keep a little hope. I'm prety sure we'll get some nexus s rom ported to our phone really soon though.

I think yes. It's cheaper and easier to use the same code.
Consider we're talking about motorola. That UI is for OMAP devices and Atrix isn't equipped with OMAP. We'll see all together.
I doubt the UI will be different just because the processor is. With it so deblurred, you gotta wonder why they even bother redoing any part of it. They can just include the bloat they want as apps without messing with the framework. Maybe the carriers are insisting on crippling some features.

Its the same case as why the Photon and Atrix got a different, uglier and sluggish Blur instead of the one that came with all the Motorola phones equipped with OMAP4 chips.
Heck, the ICS Blur we see on our Atrix might even be the original ugly Android4 blur that is available for download everywhere.

Agreed.
Heck the launcher on the initial Froyo builds was so much more faster!
And then the rest of the Motorola phones comes out, and guess what ? Atrix is suddenly sluggish? I mean seriously?
I actually complained about screen switching being TOO fast on the Froyo build lol... ooops.
GB update was weird for me, it worked GREAT for a long time, then it started getting buggy and sluggish, I factory reset it like 4 times with new blur accounts etc, and nothing helped, finally rom'd it the other day and couldn't be happier..

If reports are correct (that Webtop has been replaced with tablet mode plus some candy), then the only solution that is rational is to run a headless Linux disttro and RDC into it.
Even if all the bits of code needed to spin up X are opensource, it is going to be a huge pain for somebody to port it over to ICS. And some items (such as the kernel mod that mux's inputs to both X and 'droid) I do not beleive are avaiable.
Using an RDC aproach makes it is fairly easy to put a distro of your choice on the Atrix though, so that is a plus.
To me the question would be if I was to use a full screen RDC to an 'ux desktop, or just bring up a window to the app that I want. Really need to see how it all plays after we get the real Tegra drivers for ICS out.
