Just ran across this article on Engadget and noticed that the pictured device is running a high res version of the Sense browser on Gingerbread, so it does look like we will be getting a ROM soon, ported or official is the question now

Yes! Good catch. I was just looking at that. I'm holding off on anything till later this year after seeing that leaked slide from nvidia saying quad cores might show up on phones. That new psp looks cool just because it is (hopefully) gonna be so damn fast.
Swyped from my Evo on steroids.
oh i hope so. this would be nice.
There is no way you can know that and as far as gingerbread icons the only one I can see good enough to make out is the battery icon, and thats not a GB one. In GB the battery is standing up, where in that pic it is laying down like 2.2. And what I'm assuming is the alarm next to the battery it seems more like the old one which is a little bigger than the gingerbread one.
Looking at it again the signal is green, but thats the one one I would say is gingerbread like.

Just because the icons look like the older ones doesn't mean much because HTC isn't necessarily going to keep the GB icons.

I read yesterday that the quad cores aren't likely to hit the shelves until Christmas. That seems to line up with the way carriers release phones. Roll out the dual cores early this year, and the quad cores for the holidays.
Honestly unless the quad cores offer a significant improvement in power consumption, I'm not sure that it will be that much of an improvement over the dual cores.
The killer feature on all phones, at least at the current level of functionality, is battery life. Put it this way: would you rather have an EVO that was twice as fast (or had twice the data speed, for that matter), or one with a battery that lasted twice as long. I think most people (techies and otherwise) would answer #2.
i don't expect a sense/ginger update from sprint until spring or later. too bad that will be the last official upgrade for the evo!

For those looking to try GB now, CM7 nightlies are highly functional now. Just the usual no 4G and no HDMI but if you rarely use those, may be worth playing with. I have been running for over a month now it its great.

Each nightly doesn't really change all that much, development has been really slow on cm7 lately. But I know what you're trying to say, even if it was unnecessary and makes you look like a hater.
MOST nightly updates improves on previous builds...occasionally something gets borked...but that's why you:
nandroid your "last" stable build
nandroid your "last" stable ROM
OR
you don't touch the nightlies until you get stable builds...then again...lots of us like the bleeding edge or we won't be going thru these forums as it is...
Gingerbread is cool...and the nightlies are very stable at this point...worthy to be a daily driver. Whether you update nightly to nightly that is up to you.
Lets not flame those that are praising the nightlies...especially when they feel that the nightlies are daily driver worthy to THEM.
I'm hoping we will get an official OTA within the next month or two, or at least a source release from HTC before then. HTC is by far the best manufacturer about pushing out updates. Samsung and LG just straight don't care, and Motorola is slow. I read an article on Engadget a few weeks ago about how HTC has been very good about supporting it's older devices, updating half of them to Froyo last year. Ah, found it: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/...htc-most-eager-to-provide-android-2-2-updat/#
I'm loving the current gingerbread roms, using evervolv right now, but I'm really missing 4G, properly working GPS, and sense in general haha.
Praise all you want in the cm7 thread.

I have an EVO and I'm switching. Don't get me wrong. I love my EVO to death and have had a blast with it. What I'm switching to the NS for is the Screen, battery life, and updates. I like the EVO screen but the SuperAMOLED screen is clearer and smaller to a size that I like better. 4.3" is too big for me to carry in my pocket. Battery life also. I have an extended battery and don't like the added bulk plus you add a case on top of that? It's just not comfortable for me. Updates is self explanatory.
I love the EVO but I gotta move onto something that fits me better. I'm passing the EVO to my mother who has my old Hero now. She needs something else to cause everyone knows the Hero is well behind standards now. I'll be following up here still. Once that Snap v9 kernel comes out, you can bet I'll be first one to get it!
I personally would love to have one but I want to see how the community welcomes it. I know it's stock android and some people love that but I just want to be sure there will be some steady developers on it. I really hope sense can be ported to it. It's obvious the phone is better than the evo spec wise but I will really miss Sense if I leave the Evo.
Size, speed and updates make it worth it all alone.
My g/f pre-ordered the Nexus S 4G and she was the first one in my area to pre-order it (at least in that particular store.) I'm excited for her to get it and see how it stacks up against my Evo. I know being pure Android it's going to get the updates before anybody else. I also want to see how the screen is.

The only thing I like about sense is the browser and dialer, other than that I don't use any of the other functions it offers. Im still on the fence about the nexus, but im sure ill end up using it until the E3d drops.
I'll probably be switching. The look up comparison videos and you'll see how much better the screen is.. Plus faster updates and newer hardware. The specs are the same number wise but the ns is a superior piece of hardware

Will we be able to root this using the method for the Nexus S?
Earlier RootzWiki and AndroidPolice both received leaks from a "extremely reliable source" and they both obtained 2 different pictures of the new Ice Cream Sandwich interface running on the Nexus S.
You can read the whole article here:
http://venturebeat.com/2011/08/11/delicious-android-ice-cream-sandwich-images-leak-online/
Here are the leaks:
{

"lightbox_share": "Share",

}
ICS is also to include:
Brand-new launcher and app drawer, with screenshots of both featured exclusively on RootzWiki - with what appears to be a task switcher icon on the homescreen, though it could be something else.
Camera now has a panorama mode (not pictured)
Gmail has been totally re-themed to go with the new OS (not pictured)
Nexus S will be receiving ICS via update, but the "Nexus Prime" will be getting it first
Mostly UI changes - many older devices (< 1 year old) should be able to run it
Personally, I feel like these are fake. However, the AndroidPolice writers were heavily defending the credibility of their source in the comments section of the original post.
My reasons for being skeptical include:
At Google IO, they announced ICS would get a complete UI overhaul. This is the same basic layout we've been seeing for a long time.
The phone icon is the same as from eclair. A phone icon inside a sqaure, while the newest phone icon in gingerbread is just a phone with no square. Why would google use "new" icons for most of gapps but not the phone?
All the icons are the exact same ones from the Honeybread T-Mobile theme (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gfxandroid.honeybreadtheme&feature=search_result) I'm not sure what the original source of the icons were, but I do know the same icons were "released" way before these leaks.
The signal bar icon is rotated, as is in honeycomb (a tablet thing). The honeybread theme also rotates the signal bar. I don't think google would get rid of the standard bars that's been the same on (as far as I know) every cell phone ever.
To me these just look like a gingerbread build themed with a modified build.prop.
Those are just my 2 cents as of now. There are a couple other things that just don't fit, but then again there are a couple of things that haven't been seen before. I do know that icons can just be used as placeholders when developing and that this is not nearly finished so the final product could (and hopefully) be completely different. What are your opinons?
hmmm... interesting...
why not consider it is still work in progress? at least that is what i would consider it is...
so the same kernel as Gingerbread?
I vote fake as well.

I have to disagree. I can't speak for Google video as I don't use it, but Music and the new Market work damn near flawlessly on my device
Not sure of the source of the icons? Have you heard of something called Android 3.0?
Anyway, it looks like the interface is extremely WIP graphics wise, but this definitely seems like the real deal. I just want to know what's going to happen to phones that have softkeys with this release and if ICS phones will have virtual ones as has been speculated.
Also, I feel that the nexus won't be getting an official release of this, especially with the weak GPU.
Fake--
NO real changes, I have blue items in status bar too

If wp7 can make good use if the adreno 200, I am pretty sure google can make ics work well on the same gpu.

Thanks for the mature post
A better comment would have been telling me why it will and educating me not chastising me. It is only an opinion as pointed in my "IMHO" comment. I for one hope it will as I am only into 6 months of a 2 year contract with TMO. Brought the N1 to TMO from another carrier. I should have said that I didn't think it would work thru a normal OTA, but that with devs like Cyanogen, it may. Also, I don't know if anyone knows how much is being changed and if hardware will come into play. If you already know the source code enlighten us. I am no programmer, just a flasher. If this article is accurate it should work and seems to be little changed to a laymen. But, who knows yet?
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2101386/android-ice-cream-sandwich-leaked
Either way, it is my opinion at some point the N1's hardware or internal memory won't handle the newer OS's. ICS may not be that point yet. Hopefully never. We are running sense roms, thanks to folks like evil etc, but not without issues for a lot of folks. Bad blocks seem to hamper the N1 in some of these roms and the touch screen is not the best.
Another thread with varying opinions, albeit two months old--
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137301
Either way I have thick skin and let's hope it works great
Ken
Don't know if these links have been posted before or their accuracy, but they seem to support our HOPE for ICS and talk about Nexus Prime. If this is old news sorry! Two pages.
http://www.knowyourmobile.com/compa..._nexus_one_vs_google_nexus_prime_rumours.html
If that's ics than its atrocious.
This will be the third straight dud out of Google.
I can't fathom "most work we've put into a release" and "total ui overhaul" result in that.
Seriously if that's real might as well hand over the reigns to crapple.
Quick thought,
Where it says android version, instead of sayin ICS shouldnt it say 2.4? To me it looks like somesones just recolored and renamed bits of CM7 I reckon this is fake but i guess we'll just have to wait and see
Good Point
But, maybe they haven't finalized a version number yet. Would think they would have though.
Trying to remember if GB leaks had number or said Gingerbread.

Shouldnt be that hard to track down. Since every single android release has had "leaks". Im sure whoever did this would have done that as well (if it were fake)
Agreed, having ICS means nothing
But, all I remember on pics is 2.3--
or, the GR122 or whatever the number is. It dosen't show on the MIUI rom I am on atm. Think it does on Cyan.
Either way after further research and faith in Cyan, I think we may see ICS on the N1. Unless some new info comes out. It would be nice because GB has reached it's wow factor to me at this time.
Flashing was more exciting 6-12 months ago
hi all,
I went through search and did not find much about this question on my mind for this week.
its been bootloader unlocked and having gingerbread source code available.
I wonder whether atrix will get community build of ics.
i am honestly bored of f***ed up power management of android on dual cores.
i dont know what is problem here but
NVIDIA is not fixing their heating issues.
GOOGLE is not fixing up power management of android on multicore hard ware.
MOTOROLA the great we know ,is slow and lazy ass to move forward in ics for atrix.
i hate the day when i decided about buying atrix.
its bloody radiator and its heating temp. of 54celcius on normal use.
I am using cherryblur 1.4d and faux 123's optimised 1ghz kernel both latest.
i tried undervolting as well but it still heats up crazy.
I am honestly bugged with it.
may be I am totally wrong about my understanding.
i have samsung focus running mango and i prefer it for casual netbrowsing than my atrix.
I hate the NVIDIA for its heating legacy.
I swear on name of god that i wont touch anything with any kind of nvidia inside.
can we expect atrix to get better power management with ice cream sandwich which supposedly optimized for multicore processing.
I also for a brief time had both heating and battery issues with an over clocked kernel I decided to go to a kernel which was not overclocked I'm getting good battery life with no power management apps running and I never overheat anymore. Maybe ur issues can be improved with a new rom and Kernel?

Its not question of availability.have they upgraded all their androids to latest versions? I dont think so.
I know its carrier who slows down update delivery.

My main grudge is why do they not optimize their software to get benefited out of dual core processing? ??
As I am not even remotely related to programming or anything with engineering,I understand it may take time to optimize.
but for company like Google how difficult is it to optimize their code for multicore processing???

drpratik: well... IIRC, didn't Google buy, or semi-merge with Motorola? That could help with the speed of things. Not to mention the supposed steps that are taking place in order to try to get devices up to date much more efficiently than the current pace allows.
As for optimization for dual-core phones.... you DO realize that there wasn't a SINGLE dual-core android device, let alone a phone, until the Motorola Xoom made it's debut, right? Which came out with Honeycomb... which is more than likely designed to use dual-core CPU's. There aren't really that many updates to previous Android versions shy of bug fixes when a new version of Android comes out. And seeing as ICS will be the first NEW Android OS for cell phones since Gingerbread, i'm sure we'll probably see it sooner or later... but probably sooner. Either officially, or from a modded ROM.
I do appreciate your response and that both ATRIX and XOOM run on same tegra2 platform.
I agree that optimization takes time.
But tegra 2 is out for at least 18 months.
I have high hopes for ics.what I dont like is android can't see the second core also forget utilizing.if android is not able to see also then why not throttle it down and put it into hibernate and use only when software can take benefit it.
I thought my battery is bad.I started using new battery but same result.
Back to point-- Google has bought Motorola for its patents portfolio to fight off apple attack and I will be really happy if this relationship proves fruitful for end users.
Lets hope for best.

It just seems strange for them that they're taking so long... No doubt they'll release one of the best roms when it's finished. Until then I'm keeping my eye at Virtuous. ^^
Btw, is it just me or have you guys also noticed devs are slowly leaving the DHD behind? Seems that they're moving on to the Sensation family, and the soon to be released One series are only going to add up to that I suppose. Sad.

im still under no illusion that the sensation is crap,i test run the xe and the xl..i see no difference, but im no gamer, they have more roms due to newer device but i had no urge to upgrade to either as i normally do,the ville i will due to it looks nice, ics is onboard and sense 4..if it didnt that already i probably wouldnt get it?
i dont think devs are leaving, its just natural progression i think..this forum compared to the desire for example i used to use...is quite stressful..i dont know why, even i get hacked off.with myself and others. shame is..the desire hd is a quality phone, its reliable...looks nice.
my next roms will be ics when its complete and ics with sense 4..ill try out sense 3.6 with ics but cant see me warming to it..
as for cm9 unless it has bells and whistles i probably wont care when it arrives..
CM always has bells & whistles. Its like specifying all the optional extras when buying a car.
I'm waiting for the rumored HTC Zeta. 2.5Ghz Quadcore. That + CM9/10 will last a few years, just like the DHD has & will continue to do.

Yeah the DHD has taken its stand! It is a good phone for sure and since google always is trying to make their rom lightweight I think the DHD can last for long!
But as soon as I get the money I'm switching to a Google i.e galaxy nexus. I hate that htc is not enabling all of the features that are out there!
Not heard of zeta....eta release?

looks a bit brickish?

It is a bit "square", but as you can tell from the homescreen I posted, I much prefer function over style.
From its rumoured specs, 2.5Ghz Quadcore, 32GB storage, 1GB RAM, WXGA (1280x720) display. It would be more than capable of holding it's own in a smartphone market that progresses very quickly. Perfect for a handset that's worth keeping for a few years (i.e DHD) & perfect for CM9/10 & 11
the specs do look good, ill probably still go on and get the ville or endeavour...more the ville though,in a way I hope some development release an asop. to run on these devices just in case sense 4 hasn't really went far...I'm liking asop roms more and more recently, rcmix 4.0 is a great rom but drains my battery up way to quick, now I'm running absolution which is giving me roughly a day and a half..it is undervolted by preference..not sure if that makes a massive difference though lol
the zeta as you said looks quality, just design wise...think its a case of looking at it in reality..pictures don't give justice on occasions

The image on gsmarena doesn't do it much justice I admit.

This gives a better appreciation of the shape.
CyanogenMod is such a versatile ROM, you can theme it to your hearts content or leave it bare. Underclock it to get the best battery life or overclock it to cook food off of.
IMO CM9 will really expand upon the best core features of ICS, the future of android is bright.
It's a fake foto 'cause as we all know ACS needs only 3 buttons. I don't think such a powerfull phone will be released with 2.3.x Android. So it's a fake

Motorola ICS UI review: this isn't the Blur we used to know
Looks like the official ICS ROM will be mostly vanilla. With such a light touch and now being owned by Google, maybe they'll go full vanilla in the future.

We already have a few ICS discussion threads, you could have known that months ago by reading one of them.
This thread title is misleading. Offical release date is most likely Q4 2013.

No, I'm pretty sure it's next Tuesday.
MB860, CM7.2.0, Faux 026b1 1Ghz
And I stand by my original statement that it will be released on Friday.
Jelly Bean right after, on Saturday.
I am not sure if they would provide a vanilla UI for ATrix like we see in Razr.

I think yes. It's cheaper and easier to use the same code.
Consider we're talking about motorola. That UI is for OMAP devices and Atrix isn't equipped with OMAP. We'll see all together.
I doubt the UI will be different just because the processor is. With it so deblurred, you gotta wonder why they even bother redoing any part of it. They can just include the bloat they want as apps without messing with the framework. Maybe the carriers are insisting on crippling some features.
Code is written in high level programming language like C++.

Its the same case as why the Photon and Atrix got a different, uglier and sluggish Blur instead of the one that came with all the Motorola phones equipped with OMAP4 chips.
Heck, the ICS Blur we see on our Atrix might even be the original ugly Android4 blur that is available for download everywhere.
Sent from that Atrix.

Agreed.
Heck the launcher on the initial Froyo builds was so much more faster!
And then the rest of the Motorola phones comes out, and guess what ? Atrix is suddenly sluggish? I mean seriously?
I actually complained about screen switching being TOO fast on the Froyo build lol... ooops.
GB update was weird for me, it worked GREAT for a long time, then it started getting buggy and sluggish, I factory reset it like 4 times with new blur accounts etc, and nothing helped, finally rom'd it the other day and couldn't be happier..
Got to figure out a solution for webtop though, I used that a LOT.

If reports are correct (that Webtop has been replaced with tablet mode plus some candy), then the only solution that is rational is to run a headless Linux disttro and RDC into it.
Even if all the bits of code needed to spin up X are opensource, it is going to be a huge pain for somebody to port it over to ICS. And some items (such as the kernel mod that mux's inputs to both X and 'droid) I do not beleive are avaiable.
Using an RDC aproach makes it is fairly easy to put a distro of your choice on the Atrix though, so that is a plus.
To me the question would be if I was to use a full screen RDC to an 'ux desktop, or just bring up a window to the app that I want. Really need to see how it all plays after we get the real Tegra drivers for ICS out.
after many Tuesday, still waiting for ICS
