John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, has been taking questions from customers on Facebook and, perhaps inadvertently, revealed that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro will not receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.
We have been waiting for Sony to make an official statement on their Jelly Bean upgrade plans and this is the first concrete news we have on the matter. The Xperia arc S was the highest specced 2011 Sony Xperia handset, so if this handset isn’t getting it we can conclude that none of the other Xperia handsets from the 2011 range will get the update either. However, the 2012 Xperia range do look likely to get the update, although timing remains an unknown right now.

That's not the problem! Why should people who don't even get paid for their work do the stuff of the manufacturers? All of these companies should be ashamed not supporting their product more than they do!

Not really surprising.
Vendors should be ashamed, JB's announced, out and about, some people are waiting for their official ICS update.
Likelihood is that their will be some semi stable JB ROM's for the Play before some devices get their ICS update.
Yea, this is no surprise at all. I thought this was about Cyanogenmod10 for Xperia 2011s, lol. Don't be scaring rooters like this!! xD
Well that sucks....

Leaving all about that the Xperia Play didn't even get ICS, the most impressive of all this is the fact that companies like Sony, HTC, Samsung, etc. make devices that cost about 400-600 € and only give ONE year of updates support. And nobody says anything.

Sony cant do that... The xperia 11 line NEEDS jelly bean. ICS runs awefull even on the arc s. Homescreen transition on arc s with stock 4.0.4 is not "laggy" but the framerate is very low, definetly below 20 fps. If i compare my xperia play on stock gingerbread with my friends stock ics arc s this is a major difference. And jelly bean would fix that, look at the nexus s it has less power than arc s and runs choppy with ics aswell but with jelly bean it is smooth, fps is high. ICS is kinda a beta for jelly bean. Every ics device must have jb. Never Sony again.

It's more to do with the poor quality of the ROM seeing as I'm running a custom ICS ROM on my unsupported Xperia Play pretty fine.
speak with your wallets guys, stay away from future sony phones. Show Sony what dropping support feels like.

I don't notice much difference at all over a GB ROM, certainly not slow.
jellybean?
come on, we still got no ICS update
I agree that JB is what ICS should have been(judging by comparison videos). ICS WAS the beta to JB is right!! . Since the Xda community has figured out the Touchpad issue(not Sony) and added it to ICS, I am dying to see if the gaming would come back to us with JB. That would be a smack in the face of Sony and might actually influence people to not buy more Sony devices knowing they wont support.

Okay, so we've already seen Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Nexus S, but that was decidedly... unofficial. We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." It's hardly a surprise and there's no specific word on timing just yet, but hopefully it won't take long to move that vanilla Android device up to something with a breaded exterior.
Keepin fingers crossed for our ARC.

HTC may be busy pondering its Android 4.0 future, but Sony Ericsson is apparently ready to take a bite out of Google's Ice Cream Sandwich. Yesterday, in a post on its Facebook page, Sony Ericsson's Dutch branch stated that it will indeed upgrade its Xperia lineup to the latest Android OS, though it didn't offer any details on release dates. We reached out to the manufacturer for confirmation, and received the following statement:
Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.
The company went on to say that all official software announcements will be posted on its blog, so we'll let you know as soon as we have more details.
Bring it on!

yeah can't wait for ICS!
I just REALLY hope SE leave this one fairly stock, with regards to most of the apps and the UI.
They made the right move replacing a lot of 2.3 because frankly it sucked, but Google have really worked to refine this, it would be a shame to see SE spoil this consistency in the UI they've finally achieved.
.... Saying that.... I hope they keep the SE camera app, but everything else I'd love to see stock
So i guess we ( Xperia Arc Users) will get the ICE CREAM SANDWICH upgrade for our mobile ???
I hope se changes a lot.

It's not about running it better than ICS, it's about game compatibility with the touchpads and the overall gaming experience compared to Gingerbread.
Hence why they didn't update to ICS in the first place, It's extremely unlikely that we will get Jelly Bean or anything else as a matter of fact tbh. The only way we can get Jelly Bean is by porting but gaming will always be a problem with roms from ICS onwards.

Plus some people on this forum are so ungrateful to what we devs give to them and just always complain, You can never win with some people hence why I stopped developing my ICS Rom further with constant posts saying touchpads aren't working blahblah..

Yeah, I would agree with your point, ICS performance-wise is no doubt far better than Gingerbread (not to mention Jelly Bean), but I don't see it in the last ICS Beta on my Xperia Play ... the reason being ... may be lack of good driver support, if there's no official driver support, and Sony just expect hack work from the XDA community can resolve this issue they are too cheap-skate ... no offends, I think the open-source initiative is pure good, but official support is crucial too ...

As you may know or not there was a found leak yesterday of REAL android 4.3 for the Samsung Galaxy S4 I-9505.
Well how does this relate to us?
Well we all are interested to see the difference in the system.
I thought it would be a good idea to keep a discussion thread just in case someone brings it up and people go off topic.
Some quick info on the firmware:
- A lot of backdoor additions such as the new norm of Low Power Bluetooth support.
- This version is NOT KEY LIME PIE.
- This version has almost no UI changes, but noticeable changes include settings access method in the camera e.t.c
- Some apps have Android 4.3 and even the modem name attached into the description when accessing app info.
- Known to increase benchmark scores by approximately 1800 in Antutu.
- Has a SeLinux button at bottom of About Phone in Settings.

Even if the performance on Android 4.3 would be better, we would sadly never get it to a state on the Xperia Play so that it can be used as a daily driver. We're not even able to get wifi working on android 4.2!

If you mix this rumor with the other rumor that Motorola has some secret new low-spec'd phones coming out, there may be some truth to it. I certainly hope so.
Personally I believe our phone is good enough to run JB. I don't see why it couldn't run Android 5.0 well.
JB performance is impressive and a lot of people don't understand RAM Consumption to a full extent on Android.
I think even 4.2.2 won't do the play any bad.

I think we all know they'll be updating the Xperia Z. It might not be the star of the show any longer but it certainly certified for 4.3. Sony themselves said they would update the phone. 4.3 doesn't really bring many most have features so I am not particularity rushing for it. We dont know what specification will 4.4 require, but the rumour says that its gonna be refreshed, super-light even for 500mb RAM smartphones. That, and the fact Xperia Z is not even a year old, still supported by qualcomm, makes me sure it definitely will be upgraded to 4.4. What is more Xperia Z was truely (not counting me) first SONY phone, which attracts clients. I mean first which does matter on market ( S and T didnt matter at all), there is too many people who bought this device, if SONY abandon such a great group its gonna be disaster for future flagships.

Very true, and the fact that Z finally started the Sony quest to be recognized as a serious contender in the Flagship race. The reason i am not looking forward to 4.3 is mainly because it does not bring anything new to the table, so if it had to be one upgrade, it would rather be the latest. That said we always have XDA and Z is a pretty good device on a whole, so we should keep getting unofficial support for sometime.

To be honest Sony have made their name fairly well. But like you said 4.3 doesn't seem to bring anything new to the table in terms of usability. That said I've only seen rumours and such rather than hard facts from Google themselves. It will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Sony Xperia Z should be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat by March - according to a Polish carrier
Sony’s Xperia Z received an official update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean in December, and it appears that it will make the jump to KitKat pretty soon as well.
According to Play - one of Poland’s major mobile carriers - its Sony Xperia Z should be updated to Android 4.4.2 KitKat in late February, or March. If that turns out to be accurate, Xperia Z owners in other parts of the world should expect to get the new version of the OS at about the same time. The Xperia Z turned 1 year old last month, and a KitKat birthday present would be really nice.
Alongside the Xperia Z, other slightly older Sony Android devices that will likely be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat later this year are the Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, and the Xperia Tablet Z. Naturally, the newer Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra will also be updated, possibly starting the next few months.

Original source in Polish here for anyone that is interested.
If this is true, then the turn around between 4.3 and 4.4 is impressive. Sony are turning out to be the best experience of an OEM Android handset producer that I've personally had.

There's a good chance the 4.3 was late due to waiting for decent drivers from qualcomm, as 4.4 uses pretty much the same structure,
and QC have already released valid 4.4 drivers it shouldn't be too much work to bring up 4.4 on Sonys part.

Mind you, their GB was flawless...when they started playing with ICS, that is when they dropped the ball...hope it doesn't happen again with kitkat.

I hope there will be some "straight" root method for 4.4, now the downgrade&pre-root method is quite a pain...

I doubt it. The build number begins with 10.4, the same as the 4.3 builds for other Z variants.

But the letter has changed like from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 then to 4.3 .
I'm a one year xperia Z owner.

I've gone through every single update for the Z, but it seems that my memory is a bit better than yours.
Look at this list, then see if you want to try again.

Uh,you're right then.
I messed up the numbers and letters.
The numbers changed and one time the letter 10.1(A)- 10.3(A) - 10.4(B )
Peace.

Are you saying that YOU'RE ready for 4.4, or that Sony have it ready for ALL our XZ's?
if u see here .. http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/02/1...1-4ghz-quad-core-720p-display-running-kitkat/
the build on this leaked system info on D5103 shows 18.1.A.0.11 for kikkat 4.4.1

Different models have different build numbers for the same version of Android. Check out some of the build numbers for different devices such as the Z1 on PTCRB.
It's highly unlikely that 4.4 for the Z will have that build number.

Yes. XZ will have 10.5.X.X.X rather than anything else. Proof...my experience with Sony for so long.
