I don't know if its me, the device or just the screen. Cause my IPS screen on my nexus 7 is just not beating my Samsung galaxy s2,3 and my galaxy nexus's super amoled screen. The colors on the IPS just looks so washed out and plain if you compare it to a screen that has super amoled. Anyone done this yet? Compare the colors? Cause the screen just makes a huge difference lol. Unless my nexus 7 is defected.... I think it would have been a lot better if it was made by Samsung instead of Asus. Samsung super amoled just kills any other screens

No you wouldn't. If the N7 was sub 500....I wouldn't touch it I doubt the swarm thats attacking it would either. That's what sets it apart its price.
Its too barebones IMO to be that much. Plus build quality isn't up to par. (Glass isn't scratch resistant, Crap speakers, Flickering, At least a option for a Cell radio ect) all my opinion.
I even noticed a slight burn in too....

Its ok for me bu not the best, but it can be fjxed with a future kernel(s). On the nexus there is franco and trinity kernel. With them i cn adjust colour
Red
Green
Blue
There is gamma adjustment
And contrast adjustment.
With all of these you can get your personal setting. It wont be long before we start to see ths kind of stuff for the n7.

Tegra 3 has some battery saving feature called PRISIM/DIDIM which boosts colors/contrast in order to reduce backlight consumption. There doesn't appear to be a way to disable it. When I watch a movie for 30 secs or so and return to the home screen I notice that the boosted colors/contrast still remains until I power off the screen. I hope Nvidia and Google make the feature optional by way of a firmware update. Other than that the tablet is quite decent.
Am I the only one who isn't keen on the superamoledplusomgwtfbbq screens?
After using my N7 and going back to my GS2 I think it looks way too over saturated and just a little bit ridiculous. I much prefer the screen on this, amoled screens to me look like when you're photoshopping a picture and accidentally slip while adjusting the saturation and set it to max.

The Nexus 7 uses the same beautiful, amazing screen as the 3rd generation iPad. The N7 has a lower native resolution obviously, but the underlying technology is identical between both devices.

Not at all. If you compare colour contrast and saturation between the two, you'll notice that the Nexus 7 looks much less vibrant than the new iPad.

This should simply be because the new iPad has a higher pixel density than the Nexus 7. Higher pixel densities lead to higher color saturation since there's less empty space between the pixels and more colorful pixels to fill that space. The underlying screen technology should still be the same (IPS).
I really don't like the amoled screens. Their colour accuracy is just horrible. Cracking the saturation to 11 does not make a screen good. The amoleds on S2s that I've seen have all kinds of horrible colour casting. White is a sort of blueish colour. Give me a decent IPS panel any day of the week.
I've always been a bit fussy about colour accuracy. Calibrize is a good little programme for the PC that lets you get the colours roughly right.
This thing is competing with the Kindle Fire and whatever they bring out. It's a "Play Store" device, pushing magazines and books. It's perfect for it's purpose.
Open up a book on this thing and it looks great. Crisp and sharp text, even if the home screen does look a little under saturated.
Agreed, Home screen is is not well saturated. Netflix and several other apps look very well saturated. I would say its pretty typical for IPS.
Nothing beats amoled for contrast/blacks though.

I was set on upgrading to the galaxy nexus but after using the device I am just not sure anymore. I have an i9023 and in all honestly I found the display of the gnexus underwhelming. It was too dim compared to nexus S LCD and the whites were pretty bad. I am just used to having a high quality LCD I suppose and dont mind it's shortcomings anymore but would be more annoyed at SAMOLED shortcomings rather than appreciate it's qualities. I am by no means saying that LCD is superior tech, just personal preference.
And then the loudspeaker is a disaster on the galaxy nexus, again I am really used to having an above average speaker on the nexus S and this is almost a deal breaker.
So then I used the xperia S and I really loved the screen, the viewing angles were unfortunately worse than nexus S but overall it just felt superior. Amazing colors and sharpness, contrast was acceptable as well. I didnt seem to have any problem with the face buttons of the xperia but I didnt concentrate on them too much which I should have since many people are dreading them.
The speaker was better than even nexus S and the camera is superb with the hardware button making it much better to comfortably take pics.
I also found the xperia S to be more comfortable to handle despite being heavier, the galaxy nexus is a giant.
And then it's 32GB which is really good, I feel for these sort of phones 16GB is not enough when you have 1080p video recording and HD screens.
Unfortunately the xperia S is still stuck on GB which is really sad for such a nice phone.
Ofcourse the biggest strength of the nexus is the software support. What do you honestly think is the better phone and why?
Galaxy nexus.
If you like the xperia the most then go for it. ICS Is just around the corner for him according to rumors. Just keep in mind that there's some xperia that can't be bootloader unlocked from Sony's webpage.

Updates for SE phones are always "just around the corner according to rumors". To my experience, never buy an SE phone in the hope of an update "coming soon". If OP think it's a good phone and are content with the Android version it ships with, get it. If OP won't be happy with a phone until it gets a certain update, wait until that update is readily available before you buy.
Which phone would be best for OP, I wouldn't know.
Anyone know of a way to adjust screen colors on Nexie-7? Comparing GoogleTalk on it to GSII, colors are way, way washed out and pale. I appreciate that some of this is IPS vs. Amoled, but this is really pronounced.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!!!
There does not seem to be a way to do it yet. This question has been asked many times since release and there is nothing to even show it can be done. Its looking very unlikely that we will have such feature. Would be great though.

I have a hard time comparing the screen to a device like that because I'm really not a fan of the over saturation of colors. Something that looks like I'm on acid at the Willy Wonka factory just doesn't appeal to me. On the other hand, it'd be nice to have color control capability on the Nexus 7, but I'm extremely doubtful any adjustment capability will be possible.

Excuse my ignorance, but how great of a screen is the N7 supposed to be in comparison to some of the higher end smartphones out there in terms of color reproduction and saturation?
I have the HTC One, and side by side comparisons of the same image makes the N7 look washed out and bland.

I agree with you completely. I have an HTC One X and immediately thought the 2013 N7 looked pale in comparison. Hopefully there's some resolution in the future.
I have a Note 8 and a Nexus 7.
On colors with green elements displayed on the Nexus 7, the entire photo takes on a distinct greenish hue. The black level on the N7 is not very dark, either.
I set up both tablets on the floor, mounted a camera on a tripod over them and took photos.
Attached are some detail shots of flowers and our dog showing the green wash and the bright blacks. I certainly hope that this is something which can be addressed in software.

I would definitely want to look at the N7 side by side with something else at the shop before buying one, or else be ready to return it if you have trouble with the color accuracy once you get one home.
Not everyone will care, of course.
But what I've seen in reviews is that brightness is good but color is not very accurate, not that both are good.
roustabout,
thank you for that.
that proves my point from other threads, the N7 screen is not properly calibrated yet again.
Overall, it seems pretty good to me. I compared it to my Spyder calibrated IPS monitor and the colors were fairly close.

That's what I've found: it looks a lot better than my Nexus 7 2012. I think it gets slammed a lot for being "bland" since most of the smartphones like to oversaturate their displays (I'm looking at you, Samsung). I have a really good IPS monitor for my computer, and it seems to fit in quite well with it, and it makes my Galaxy S4 screen look like a colorful kid's toy.

Pretty sure the issue with the first generation nexus 7 was that nvidia didn't provide a way to set these things. Qualcomm I believe does so the odds are pretty good. I personally like the stock calibration though. The first time I think its been good on a nexus device. The panel itself is much better than the nexus 10 and nexus 4 as well. Much wider view angles.

No display is ever "accurate." The question is which colors of the spectrum are closest. Here's the N10.1-14 (left) against the N3 (right).
Here's my N3 displaying the same yellow background as my N10.1-14
And actually the N10.1-14 does better than the N10.1-12 on whites; at least the example Anandtech tested.
i noticed my Google Keep and IMDB icons were alot darker than on my old touchpad

This is from Anandtech's review of the N5. There's been lots of grumbling in their forum about "washed out" colors.
It’s interesting to hear some Nexus 5 users complain that the display seems undersaturated, since that kind of end user feedback reflects subjective comparison. It also suggests to me that a large percentage of the population doesn’t know what some colors or system elements actually should be. Even for me, looking at the green elements inside the Google Play store on the Note 3 in movie mode or Nexus 5 initially seemed slightly more muted than normal. The reality is that this is what they actually should look like. We’ve just become accustomed to their oversaturated appearance on virtually every other device.
This kind of expectation about what looks right and what doesn’t is rather telling for the state of display calibration in Android handsets, and how OEMs have used oversaturated colors to increase retail shelf appeal. Unfortunately the reality is that oversaturated colors do seem to win taste tests among shoppers, the same way that TVs in most big boxes do. We’ve been looking at them for so long that well calibrated displays like Nexus 5 initially do look noticeably different. So I don't know if the N10.1-14's yellows are closer to "right" or not but they are certainly close to the N3's. I'll admit I like oversaturated colors even though I know they aren't real. Assuming the N10.1-14's movie mode is closer to natural like the N3's try using it for a bit. It does look washed out even though it's technically more correct. Exaggerated colors on a small display actually have an advantage via greater separation from each other making things easier to view. At least IMHO.
I I think most colours are pretty natural on this, which you find with lcd. I love the screen though

1080p on a 5" screen = lower ppi which is lower level of resolution IMO. Less is less. And though it is all 'apparently' above what the human eye can tell the difference between, I don't know why HTC have chosen what in my eyes is a downgrade with the new device. Unless it ends up being just rumours after all.

By writing this, it is apparent you don't know what resolution is.
Ppi and resolution are not the same thing...
It is the same resolution, not lower level of resolution.

Also it is such a minute difference that it will not be noticeable.
Higher at 5 inches (4K for example) is just overkill
Ok guys ok, let's not let this thread become a pissing contest please, it started out as a positive thread and quickly escalated to "who knows more", which isn't productive and to be honest kinda immature for no real reason...
The resolutions are the same, screen is slightly bigger in New one which will lower the ppi a tiny bit which will probably be undetectable to the naked eye in the real world...only difference if there is any, will be the vividness of the colors since the pixels will be ever so slightly further apart...

Exactly....
I think 1080p is the upper limit on a phone. The bump to 2k or 4K is just going to cause unnecessary battery drain and is more of a "whose e peen is bigger" thing than a useful addition.
More battery drain, more taxing on the processor...
I could see on a tablet, but not on a phone 6 inches or smaller.
I still love my One. Nothing has yet to match it in terms of build quality and design. It's no wonder it won the Smartphone of the year award at MWC:
http://www.globalmobileawards.com/winners-2014/#cat_id22
and I agree with your all points especially the point you made regarding the Highlights Themes being removed :crying:. I have even contemplated reverting back to Sense 5.0 to get them back.
A year on, this phone is still blazing. Although...I made a switch to GPE (sinless) which honestly flies faster and has better battery. I don't really miss Zoe or any of the sense apps. The hardware is enough for me to love HTC.

I wasn't intending on this becoming a pis#ing match and I did state that it was only my opinion. I know the technical description of resolution however to me it includes the clarity of an image and that is down to the PPI. Of course a 5" and a 50" screen can have the same resolution and you would chose which ever one suited your needs the best but the 5" display will always show the image better than the 50".
If you look at the defenition of resolution you'll find that is actually means "the degree of detail visible in a photographic or television image" this is what equates to something being "a high-resolution monitor". Hence I have formed my opinion based on this.
Electrical Mechanical Design Engineer here btw
And, still to me there's no need for HTC to have upped the screen size to 5". Nothing wrong with the 4.7" on the One. It is an epic phone and the high PPI was a good selling point. I know the're probably just trying to compete with the S5 etc but to me the screen size should have been left alone.
Let's not forget that even 1080P is an overkill on our little 4.7 inch screens, my tv is 46 inches big with the same resolution as my phone! This is nuts! Why don't they take it down to 720P and gain a massive battery life boost
