Quick question - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Hey guys, I currently have an Epic 4g I am thinking of of getting an GS3 like in the next 15 min or so lol, but i have one quick question since I believe i read somewhere that currently the gs3 does not support voodoo sound is this correct? I bought the paid version and this app is extremely crucial for me as am hard of hearing, it helps me out tremendously. If its not, is there a similar app that provides that same level of "loudness"? Currently how is the sound on the S3? loud enough or it could be louder? Thanks guys!

There is a mod to make the speaker louder for this reason. I am not sure how it works, but I have to turn down my sound to hear other people talk because it is already rather loud. Hope this helps!

Correct. As stated on the app's description in the play store, voodoo is not compatible with our devices, YET. Just give it some time

[Q] Unhappy with the S4: Worth returning for Dev Edition HTC One?

TLDR: I'm thinking of returning a GS4 for a HTC One Dev Edition, hoping to get advice, see bullets below, thanks
My old phone broke last week, and I had to run out and get a new one on short notice (didn't have time to fully research). I read some basic comparisons and went with the Samsung, primarily because I wanted a replaceable battery and more storage with the SD card option, it was faster, and it had some extra features.
Now I'm experiencing a bit of buyer's remorse. After more research, it seems there's several different versions of the GS4, and I'm starting to feel like I'm paying a premium price for a "second best" handset, as a more powerful processor is available in other countries. To me, if I'm buying Samsung's most expensive unit (the Note is sort of a tablet so I don't count it), then I want to get the best tech on the market. Come to find, the "best" version is Korea-only. The HTC One, as far as I know, is the best HTC offers, and is lower-price than the Samsung.
Other things are bothering me too: the SD card support is great, but the phone puts almost everything on internal storage; the GS4's camera may have a lot of mega-pixels, but overall I find it's quality to be worse; the build quality makes the phone feel fragile; it's just a tiny bit too big; all those advertised smart gestures only work in a few specific apps, and even then, don't always work right; etc. There's a lot of good things about it, to be sure (stellar battery life, even with all the TouchWiz wastefulness), but I'm starting to wonder if I would be happier with a One. Additionally, I want to be able to flash custom ROMs to my phone, and after reading some posts here and on other forums, it seems a locked bootloader may cause issues for me in the future even if I can root and flash either device now.
So, I'm considering returning it and getting a One. I'm in the US, on T-Mobile (GSM), but if I'm going to make this change and give up SD support (or "SD support," I should say), I want a 64 GB version out of the box, and an unlocked bootloader. In case you missed the title, that means the Developer Edition available direct from HTC.
My Concerns:
If I get the One from HTC, it won't have T-mobile software. This means no wifi calling (something I need). Could I just flash the T-mobile ROM to get it?
Does anyone have the Dev Edition running on T-mobile? Does it work with the network (HSPA, LTE, etc.)? It's missing the 1700 band like the Google and ATT editions, but I'm not sure if that matters.
Will the Developer edition have any difference in terms of custom ROM support, compared to the "nexus" version or a normal T-mobile version?
If I do stick with the GS4 (T-Mobile SGH-M919), or get the "standard" T-mobile HTC One, can I just root / flash that, unlock the bootloader, and basically have the google version? Or do I have to forever worry about issues because the phone can never truly be unlocked? Or a high risk of bricking from flashing / unlocking the bootloader? (I'm reasonably technical, but new to the process overall).

If you do your research the quad core beats out the big little in some areas and vice versa.
The Qualcomm one though much bigger dev support and with the Google edition S4 coming out custom aosp roms are just over the horizon.
I would hold onto that sgs4,specially if it has unlocked bootloaders.

Hell no **** the s4 I hated that phone and I had it before I switched to the one but to each their opinion

Thanks for the reply. It's true the performance is close, but the "8 core" is the stronger version (longer battery life, better GPU, and a better DAC). But it's not night and day, and it's arguably the same / less than the hardware difference between the GS4 and HTC One anyway. More a principle thing I guess, just bothers me that I'm paying top dollar and not getting "the best." You say it has bigger dev support (I've also seen that stated elsewhere), but what about compared to the One?
My understanding is that the bootloader on my model is in fact locked (SGH-M919 / US T-Mobile version). Not sure if unlocking them is an easy matter (I know it's much more risky than just flashing a ROM; messing up the bootloader can really brick a phone, so I'm a little nervous about doing that). I suppose another option is to get the Google GS4 with an unlocked bootloader when that comes out in a few weeks...
The One has great dev support. Like really great. Maybe not as good as the S4, but definitely sufficient enough. It will be getting official paranoid android which I'm excited about. And yes the S4 is bootloader locked. Don't know if it's unlock able yet. Personally I'd say get the one. But that's because I bought the phone and if someone buys a phone, they will defend it as the best. I pretty much bought it for the same reasons others did. Beautiful design, Amazing speakers, high performance, and sense 5 is actually gorgeous. And I didn't want the S4 because of gimmicky features that make you look weird in public (people look at you weird when you swipe your hand over your phone) and are also slow to react, touch wiz is disgusting, and I'm also one of the people that can't stand plastic. I think if you were to flash a t mobile rom you'd get wifi calling working. You could ask someone in the dev section if they bother to answer you. I known for trickdroid in 5.6.0 and below you would pick your carrier and it would have a few adjustments made for whatever you picked (life wifi calling). But 6.0 is based off 4.2.2 and HTC made it so the ROM picks what it needs I think depending on your CID or what you picked as your carrier at setup. I think it's worth a shot to get it though.

Not all of that is true. I've been hanging out in the S4 forums. The Big.Little chip isn't that great. It doesn't have better battery life and some of the guys found out the Big.Little isn't even implemented right. It's not saving as much battery as it's suppose to or does it function like how its presentation presents it.
The GPU on the S600 actually performs better in certain areas than the Octa does.
The CPU is minimal
The DAC tested my GSMArena performed pretty well. It's not on par with Wolfson, but it did pretty well.
And if you have 4G LTE, then it's a no brainer.
Your bootloader isn't locked. YOu can actually unlock that phone with a few dialer codes too and it could be used internationally. And that version can already flash international roms.It sounds like you need to do a lot more research. About 75% or more own the S600 versions and development is going to boom and I mean BOOM! As in explode with this version. Compared to the one, I can't really say, but lets do the math real fast. The one sold about 5 million. The S4 has sold around double of that. And 75% of that is 7.5 mil that own the S600 versions. So development sounds like it will be great on both.
I'm going to put it this one. Benchmarks don't mean squat. If you have 4G LTE, the latency is a lot better and your apps that require a data connection will actually load quicker and be more faster due to loading data faster. Benchmarks don't keep that into account. Other than that, what is the octa going to do? Open a app a few milliseconds, and I mean a very few milliseconds faster but take longer to load the internet?
What matters is functionality. Functionality that has to do with the user experience and physical experience such as screen, sound, which one gives you a better data connection, etc. Don't make a decision on these minimal differences in benchmarks.
I was VERY torn between the two. I went to the AT&T store more then once to fiddle with the devices first hand. I went through review after review on youtube and online. There were two things that sold me on the One over the GS4. First was the speakers. They just plain ROCK! No question. And the second was the fact that every time I went into the store to use the GS4....it has HORRIBLE wake lag. I mean HORRIBLE. That too me was unacceptable on any device, let alone a flagship model...
So, I came home with the one. BUT, it wasnt without issue. The phone was perfect in every way....except for the camera. My camera was stuck (no stabilization). It would take horrible blurry photos no matter what I did. ALWAYS would blur one side of the picture. Messed with it for about a week, finally took it back into the store and swapped it out for another. Now, she takes great, clear pictures!
I couldnt ask for a better phone then the HTC one to be honest.........and that is coming from someone who was a HUGE Samsung fan, and didnt ever think they would buy another HTC due to Sense. Sense 5.0 is just plain awesome!
The HTC One does infact.....ROCK!

What' sup Baron, I knew you were around these forums. I got it last weekend and I like it a lot. But there are small things i miss on the galaxy line. I'm going to be getting a SGS4 at the end of this month sometime.
Things I like about the HTC One:
1. Not just the build quality, but it seems the software is very optimized. Keep it "simple stupid" really helped guaranteed a great user experience. I was afraid of all the S4 lag stories.
2. Costco has the phone for $129.99 with a accessories kit.
3. The stereo speakers facing you is great. It literally sounds like it's double the decibels now that the speakers actually face you. I have to admit I have been startled by my notifications at work.
4. It really takes advantage of the bass in my car. I listened to Daft Punk and it's much better than my Wolfson SGS3 i9300.
I haven't tried flashing yet though. I'm sure I will flash Android Revolution HD when I finally get bored.
Things that kind of bug me:
1. I haven't gotten the update yet, but not having a menu button is bugging me since a lot of old apps have that huge menu button at the bottom.
2. I miss simple features such as headphone notifications. I walk my dogs everyday and wish notifications would come through my headphones. Maybe a custom rom will bring this feature.
3. The SGS line had custom vibration notification.
4. The notification light is really tiny.
There's pretty much a lot of little features I miss on the SGS4 line. Like swiping in the dialer to call or message. Smart stay! Task manager option in the multitasking window, etc.
I feel like the HTC One and SGS4 are tie neck and neck. But at Costco, the HTC One is $70 cheaper and that's quite a bargain!

Good to see you here! I hear you. I tried the S4 for a week, it's a good phone but good lord does it stutter a lot. That is unacceptable to me, we have crazy specs and jelly bean. I can't wait for you to try the S4 and give your opinion. Mine? The One is the better flagship for this year.

Yeah I'll be rocking both of them for a little while. Hopefully HTC continues to improve Sense to have more features. I've been keeping up with Naruto too. It's been a up and down excitement and disappointment to me. It's been entertaining, but not good writing haha.
Tis' a device comparison thread which is not allowed (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2158159). As can be seen, there is some subjectivity with regard to which is better (and come on, you're not going to get a fair comparison if you post in the HTC One forum ). There's sufficient advice here anyway, so I'll close this thread.

Choosing between the 2

Hello guys...I know this thread has come up tens of times but after reading every single one I havent reach to a conclusion and this becomes very frustrating;/ [want to mention that I was an iPhone user from the first day. This is my first time with Android...wanted to give it a try cause I was sick of iPhones small screen]
So i have ordered the case and the memory card .. but yet I have chosen which phone to buy.
In my country I have the choice between the 2. Basically only one store in the whole country sells the "OCTA" version.
So let me tell you how I am going to use my device and please advise accordingly.
1. Facebook
2. Browsing
3. Music
4. GPS
5. Some normal gaming (Not Hardcore)
I want to use my device for long term 2+. I dont want in one year to experience lag because of a newer firmware etc etc. You got the point right?
Also my country does not support LTE. I am not using 3g because is SO SLOW and expensive...
I have read many Pros and Cons. For example:
i9500 - does not support OpenGL ES 3.0 + Not so good Battery Life + Not so much developer support + in a lot cases overheating
i9505 - Audio issues (crackling) + not so good audio and camera chip somthing like that...
Anws I think you got the point. Any suggestions will highly appreciated from both users (i9500 + i9505)
Thanks a lot!
no one? I know guys that this has been answered hundred of times but come on help one new android user
I would suggest i9505. I'm not a fan of samsung phones because were using lately most of the time nexus devices. And I can tell you if you want a stability of an iphone(not trolling ) and all the goodies from android go with 9505 put the Google version of Android on this phone and you'll be good to go.
First thing when I heard that this Samsung will be available with vanilla android I went to the shop and bought it.

Hi mate,
I also changed to the S4 for the same reasons (previously had iphone). At the time I actually wanted to get the i9500 but they hadn't hit the shelves yet. So I ended up with the i9505.
I find it a bit confusing that your country doesn't support 4G and you aren't going to have 3G. So you won't have mobile data? But perhaps you plan to use the internet over wifi? Maybe I didn't read your original post properly.
Anyway
If I was you I would buy the i9505 (which is what I have). Primarily because there seem to be less issues and the performance isn't *that* much worse than the i9500. I use my phone for exactly what you have listed and its been great.
Now that i've got the i9505 i've never looked back

Thanks for your info mate... Basically in my country 3G mobile data is expensive and SLOW... so I prefer using WIFI...
Thanks again!
Man, take 9505 for sure. Audio is very good and camera is the best I've ever seen in my life. Photos are sharp and beautiful, no pink spots (as there were on GS2), video is superb. Shutter speed could be something better but taking photo in about half of a second will suffice and I'm sure Samsung will improve it even further. CPU is just insane. It's so powerfull that even in few years it'll still overrank most phones (as GS2 does now).
Go to sammobile.com and look in how many countries 9505 is available comparing to 9500. Also Google have choosen 9505 - that means something - why not Exynos or Exynos with LTE. Look like Exynos version is best for benchmarks and Qualcomm best to use. I would definitely not exchange my 9505 for any other device available today as it meets all my needs and prove to be the very best phone I've ever have. There are some theoretical cons as shutter speed but from I can say - if You don't read about them You will not notice them Interface lags were eliminated with MEA rom. Check if it's already available for You region. This is obvious that there will be much more issues described with 9505 on forums as great majority of GS4s are 9505.
The only problem with buying any Galaxy S device is that You cannot check the screen before buy as it's covered with black foil. My GS2 had some visible flaws on it. I got used to them as many ppl said that it's very common. Luckily my GS4 screen is almost perfect with just some markings characteristic to amoled.

With new updates 9500 never heats up, im happy with battery life, not even one issue is on my phone. We have both here in my country, and i chosed the octa version. I know we have less support by devs but personally i don use stock android, i hope it will be for people who like aosp roms. But for me 9500 is really beast.

thanks mate!! need more info though
any other suggestions guys? Thanks a lot!
Mate, people who own an i9500 will tell you to buy an i9500, and people who own an i9505 will tell you to buy an i9505. They will both list what it does well, what it doesn't do so well, and what has been fixed and so on. Ultimately, the only person you should be listening to is yourself. If you want LTE and more developer support, go for the i9505. If you want 8 cores to boast about, and perhaps a tiny bit faster processing, go for the i9500. Both phones are identical for what you get (excluding what's under the hood) and if you are only going to be using the phone like an average person, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the i9505, and no reason for you to have that extra processing power (not that the i9505 can't handle it anyway). Anyway what I'm saying is, the choice is yours, and letting other people tell you what to buy is a bad thing, the information is there about both phones, you must study this carefully, understand all, and then make your decision.
And just to clarify, my camera performs perfectly, and this is with my phone being on an older firmware as my carrier is useless at pushing updates. Also, the audio quality is great on my i9505, I use Beyerdynamics in-ear headphones, and there is no problem with them whatsoever. I guess the problems people suffer from their phones are luck of the draw, and I must be one of the lucky ones. If you have any problems, return the phone within the 2 weeks most carriers allow you.

Noted. thanks!
No big difference in performance.
But i9505 have better developer support. My modest guess is that i9500 owners have to wait some time (or ever?) to get same support that i9505 will have.
BTW I don't want to use LTE/4G because of big battery drain. Sometimes I even turn off 3G and that makes a HUGE difference compared to 2G.

That is true..also I will nener use 4G or 3G only WIFI.
Thanks
I had hard time choosing between the 2 but i choosed 9500 because the camera is a bit better and better music playback because of the Wolfson DAC.
I have no regrets, i love it, im using XXUBMF8 firmware.

Unless camera is your top priority just go with i9505. It has better battery life, more developer support, better support in games.
I won't say that I am not satisfied with my i9500 but its not worth paying any premium compared to i9505.
Right now and most probably in the future, the i9500 is not utilizing its 8 cores. Not even does well with battery life compared to i9505.

General curiousity

I have had my Razr M for a little over 4 months now and it is by far the best phone I have used. I've tried a lot of different phones before, e.g. Bionic, Thunderbolt, DNA, S3, Incredibles, etc. I know a lot of what makes a "great" phone is personal perference and personally I am getting tired (humorously fearful) of how big Android phones are becoming. Th M is a perfect example of how power and features can ctill work in a M(ini) phone.
That being said, my mind often wonders why there is relatively little (pun intended) love/support shown for Ms. Is there a flaw or bug I am not aware of? Is there something about the M that turns developers off? Am I overthinking?
It's a great phone, I agree. I think the problem for developers is they are locked down so tightly.

My wife was able to get this as a replacement for her Rezound. I'm looking forward to getting it up and running when she gets back to town. To support your question, I didn't even know this phone existed. I am happy to read all the positive responses from owners as I've always steered away from Motorola smartphones. I hope we have the same positive experience as well.
Currently not being productive on my S3.
i recall the phone being heavily marketed last fall - and the price is cheap.
but for some reason, the phone companies are convinced that folks want a bigger screen.
I choose the M for the smaller size and long battery life.
I've seen quite a few Ms in the wild over the past 10 months. Moto really doesn't market the phone anymore (anyone else remember that horrid pizza party ad), but VZW will still suggest you purchase it if you wanted a cheap smartphone on contract.

All OEMs are pretty bad when it comes to the frequency of software updates, times that by the amount of time it takes a US carrier to push said updates.
Only a handful of non-Nexus devices have received official 4.2 updates.
Hi all,
When my wife finally decided to get a new phone she gave me a list of requirements and we picked this model.
But now that we have it, we have discovered that there is no gsm video calling built in. (one of her requested features).
I'm wondering if this a features removed from the telstra firmware or if it's something that it never had.
The forward facing camera had me to believe this was a feature (as did the sales staff) and online reviews also indicated a forward facing camera for video calls but they could have been referring to Skype calls.
Has anyone got a native video calling on their razr m?
Sorry for hijacking this thread but it kind of fits.
In what capacity would you do forward facing calls outside of skype?
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 4
Hi Jco23,
Not sure how your question helps to answer mine. (when I had a Nokia N97 and my wife had a Samsung F480 we made these kinds of calls mostly to show each other things. Now we try to use MMS, then calls after / before) I changed to a HTC Legend (no face camera) because I was offered a great Plan and I wanted to experiment with Android... now I'm hooked and later upgraded to my S3 which is capable of sooo much more than any of my previous phones.
GSM video calls was an old feature still supported by many Android phones including my S3 (i9305).
You can dial any normal number with the "Video call button" and if their phone supports it, you have a video call in progress.
Skype however you open Skype, the person you want to call is not online, so you need to contact the person you wish to video call, tell them to open Skype, and if your lucky you'll both appear online and be able to make the call.
(I've had Skype open many times waiting for a call and the other person can't see me on their list.)
Apple tried to improve this by inventing "FaceTime" that only works with Apple devices and from what I heard, it will not work over 3G depending on software configuration.
I'm asking if the GSM Video call is a general Motorola firmware feature removal or if it's a feature removal from a Telstra firmware. (indicating feature removal, as most other android phones support this feature)
Here in the States on Verizon 2-way video calling has worked for me using Skype, Vonage, and Tango. Does it work for you via Wi-Fi?

it should also work via google hangouts app....
So the answer is no then.
Edit:
I've recently discovered 3G-324M Circuit-Switched Video Calls is a feature not used world wide.

Headphones?

Anybody think Verizon will be kind enough to include a pair of Sammy headphones with our Note 3's? Unlike the empty spot in our Note 2 boxes, I would appreciate a new pair with the in line mic, like the other carriers get.
I know a lot of people have aftermarket ear buds etc. But personally I've been using the pair I got 2 years ago with the Galaxy Nexus. Honestly they've performed as well as any aftermarket headphones I've owned for listening to music. And they're especially convenient while driving (no blue tooth in my truck).
Anyway I was more than disappointed they weren't included with the Note 2. Looks like Sprint got them but ATT didn't. Anybody expecting them to be included? Or know yes or no if we'll get them?

According to the Q&A section on the Verizon page for the Note 3, it will:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...-note-3-white?checkedId=oneOrTwoYearPrice7193
Click Q&A, search for "headphones" and you'll see a question about it. A Samsung rep replied saying:
Hi Joey. Thanks so much for reaching out. Yes, headphones will be included upon purchase of the Note 3.
Please let us know if you have any additional questions. We're here and happy to help.

Here's hoping you're right. Kinda feel like we get ripped off when other carriers and other phones have them. Then VzW finds another way to shaft us, so they have a better chance at making a sale on beats...my opinion anyway.

I'm not an audio engineer or anything.
My friends brother owns Aurisonics and he got me a pair of the ASG-1s which sound awesome i usually rotate between those and Bose QC15s when i travel.
The headphones that come with phones and ipods sucks and sounds crappy once you hear a good set.
Any pair of customs with 2+ drivers will blow your mind. They offer full isolation because of the custom fit. I regularly use mine as earplugs when I go shooting, to loud events, or when I simply don't want to listen to someone. (the cord is detachable). Another musician friend has a pair of 1964ears triple driver model. They're a lot more affordable and he says they sound fantastic. Nothing on the market offers the clarity and dynamic range of my 18s due to the 6 drivers per ear, but the price is drastically higher. If you have a few hundred dollars to blow sometime and music is important to you, iI recommend trying out a triple driver custom. You won't be disappointed.

If you have a set of custom IEMs with a removable cable, UE makes a cable with an online microphone and volume control for iPhone. To use on anything non android, simply swap the left and right cables.
*edit* anyone with multi-driver headphones, check the impedance of the drivers together before using them with a headphone device at full gain. Most of them are wired to drop the impedance giving more wattage out of the amp. For anything with 2 or less drivers per channel, that won't be an issue, but anything 3+ drivers, it can easily burn the amp chip out on a phone. With mine, half volume is usually so loud that it causes tinnitus, so it's not an issue for me. (with great in-ear monitors comes great responsibility.) take care of your hearing, because once it's gone, you will not ever get it back.

amen to that. I have a pair of Sure ear buds and everyone thinks I was crazy for spending $300 on headphones...when you put them in and they tune out everything else, even with no music on, they are worth every dollar. I wear mine to shoot as well. Plus sound quality is way better. Glad to see someone else be jammin too. :good:
Oh recently i have been doing a lot of travel for work..I have a huge pet peeve listing to people talk about their daily bs on an airplane, being able to not hear any people is a HUGE benefit.
Shure E2/E3s aren't custom, however. There's still a monstrous difference between pro-grade universals and customs, but the shure E2s/E3s are a good example of pro-grade multi-driver IEMs.

This is true they are not custom fit but they do a great job of noise cancellation at a fraction of the ones you posted. I just don't like big bulky headphones. Shures are not top of the line but they sure do beat the $1 headphones I see all the ifone idiots walking around wearing thinking they sound great because apple makes em. I have the bose noise canceling one but find myself only wearing around the house size they are PITA to take with you

It seems I waited on google a lot for this device over the last two years. Waiting some more is no longer an option.
I mean you say you're still supporting this device then you half ass a broken update and repeat the same drivel a month later...nice.
You played the 64 bit and the tegra chip up when you sold it to me, I bought this thing instead of the shield...my bad!

kthxbye
Agreed. So glad I didn't pay full price for this paperweight. It's been a very disappointing experience even before the 7.1.1 audio fiasco. I don't expect that Google will ever fix the audio problem, and the speakers were by far the best thing about the Nexus 9!
I don't see the point of this thread. One bad experience with a product and you hate Google as a company? I think you should be a little more aware of the situation and not let your emotions run amok. I don't recall Google formally stating that it will fix this product's problem in future updates. If you had to blame someone, it would probably have to be HTC's developers and whichever group who decided 2gb of RAM and tegra processor would be best for this product.
If you can't see it from my point of view, delete your Google account, delete your YouTube account, stop using Google search, Google maps, etc. and see how "wonderful" a life without our God, Google, is. Have a nice day!

I bought the Nexus 6 shortly before the 9 as well, I had the 5 before that. I stayed with google after my 5's screen was dropped and cracked because they promised speedy updates on these devices.....I don't feel they lived up to that. Yeah but I want to find the real problem....
Does anyone know of anything that would help me know if audio changes at all. Because my ears aren't very reliable. I'm currently going through all the audio files trying to find what caused the problem. I ruled out a few things but I need something that will tell if the audio was fixed or not.

I'm with you Fazbender. Google really started to show form with the Nexus 4, then 7 (2013) and there high point was the Nexus 5 with Kit Kat. Everything since then has been a bit of a car crash. The Nexus 6P was a slight return but the Pixels are way overpriced.
On the software side, Google keyboard was best in KK, Face unlock worked as you could see where to aim the camera and Google Now is far better than the half ass Assistant.
I've now ditched Google for One Plus and life is much better. Waiting for the day One Plus release a tablet. I know One Plus don't have a great past either. Lets hope they have learnt there lesson.
