This is more of a question about user experience. I have had some people tell me that it is a great service alternative for anyone using an unlocked cell phone, like the gsm gnex, but I have also heard a few horror stories.
One would be a friend got double charged for one month, was refused a refund, and had terrible signal quality anywhere he went. (he used an att compatible sim and he was living in the northern area of florida.)
Any one out there have similar experience in poor customer service and signal ability/quality? My plan is to cut off my contract, buy a gsm nexus and go forward with straight talk.
I was on AT&T Straight Talk and hated it. The signal was poor and data speeds are slow. If you use even a little bit of data, Straight Talk will throttle you. The max speed I would get at times is 2mbps and sometimes even as low as 800 kbps, which is ridiculous considering it's supposed to be 4G. Thus, I immediately switch out and back to T-mobile.
I've heard that T-mobile Straight Talk is much better, that people got speeds of up to 8-10 mbps, much better than AT&T's anyways >.>

I've heard stuff like that but my usage on data per month is <1.5gb if that. I mainly use it for browsing, facebook, and app downloads. Now in my area I only have the option to get the AT&T sim package. I'm planning on buying a GSM GNex and trying it out for a month. The worst that could happen is that I have an att compatible 3G+ phone and I can turn around and sell that easy if I stick with verizon.
I guess what I worry most about is call quality, signal strength, and the ability to quick access my favorite websites. If I can get that reliably from straight talk I'll switch. Does anyone think those are too high of requirements?

What about T-Mobile? The $30 plan does pretty good and it's only 10 cents a minute after the first 100.

I don't have T-mobile in my area. No signal coverage really at all. All that I could possibly get is 2g (edge) at best.

I had the AT&T sim and you're right on both counts. With the AT&T sim I could barely get 800 kbps. I switched to the T-Mo sim and I've never been below 1700 kbps. BTW, it's not 4G, it's HSPA (3.5G).

That makes me sad. Do you know of any other gsm att 3g alternatives? I am sick of paying $130 a month for 2 lines.
It really depends on where you are. Here's mine from NYC with the AT&T SIM. Also I chose the AT&T SIM because most international phones use AT&T frequencies and also because here in NYC T-Mobile only gets EDGE in a lot of places, including my campus. I work near Radio City Hall/Central Park West and yes data speeds suffer, all the way down to 300-600 kbps, but that's forgivable given the amount of people on the network. My entire building uses AT&T. But again, it depends where YOU live. AT&T tends to have better coverage in most places (they're like Verizon but GSM), while T-Mobile has faster speeds but far less coverage:

Me -- unlocked galaxy nexus on the 30 dollar t-mobile plan, my speeds in my town at work are great.. at my house in the sticks no signal in my house, but cant complain, bout the price,,
wife ( iphone 4 ) oldest daughter ( atrix 4g ) both on straight talk.. and both rock but att coverage is perfect down here so that makes sense,,
Its all bout location,,, but its better than paying out the rear on post paid contracts lol

Interesting... I was reading this article (http://androidandme.com/2010/07/car...ons-why-t-mobile-3g-is-better-than-sprint-4g/) that speculates that Sprint will have the slowest speeds by the end of 2011.
Of course, the primary purpose of the article is to pit T-Mobile's 3G against Sprint's 4G... but also goes on to talk about AT&T and Verizon. I'll summarize what I gathered in the article.
Sprint's "4G" WiMax speeds have a theoretical limit of 11 Mpbs. I've personally been able to hit 3 Mbps. Some people on T-Mobile's 3G HSPA+ can apparently hit 5 Mbps with a theoretical limit of 21 Mbps.
AT&T will also upgrade to HSPA+, but with a theoretical limit of 14.4 Mbps (still faster than Sprint). The article specualtes that Verizon will have the fastest 4G available, but not until a year from now.
Do you think Sprint will up their game? Is that even possible? Did I choose the wrong carrier when I went with the EVO?
In two years switch to the fastest network. Why worry about it now...and really are you going to have same phone in two years?
Alot can happen between now and the end of next year. I believe you made a good choice being that Evo is a kickass phone and Sprint has the best plans and service (imo). This article may very well be accurate or not so, either way I give credit to Sprint for pushing pretty hard to get 4G to out as fast as they did even if is not as fast as they make it to be. Anyways...the Evo will be old by the end of next year regardless so you can choose again I think sprint will adjust accordingly to the market when that time comes.
Unfortunately this article falls short in a number of ways:
Sprint's current WiMax standard (802.16e) has a max theoretical downspeed of 144Mb/s. 802.16m, the future revision of WiMax has a theoretical max of 1Gb/s.
HSPA+'s current max speed is 56Mb/s, and the future revision max is 168Mb/s.
Nobody's network right now is even close to those speeds. Sprint has a head start, and the existing infrastructure to build off of in terms of subscribers and towers.
T-Mobile has Deutsch Telekom's money to build off of, but their existing 3G coverage is grossly lacking.
Granted both parties are trying to build as much as possible, but in the end I'll stick with Sprint.
Your call.

Let's just keep in mind that that these are theoretical maximum transfer rates possible under ideal conditions. Once you take into account the real world signal conditions, tower loading, and backhaul capacity it's a completely different ballgame.

Your totally right. Think about it Wireless N has a theoretical speed of 300mbps, but for the most part you'd be lucky to get a transfer speed over 180mbps (at least in my case, some might get a little higher) because this is theoretical and could someday reach that potential. The same goes for 4g. Everyone has their own speeds and systems but in the end its just a matter of who has better coverage. At&t and t-mobile might have "more bars in more spaces", but in my experience sprint and verizon have far superior data networks and I don't think thats going to end anytime soon. So for me I'll stick with Sprint.
For me the important thing is Sprint has the fastest speed RIGHT NOW. I live in Seattle and average 3-5 with 4G (recently got a lot better). A year or two from now I may move somewhere else but for now my friends look on enviously.

Agreed. Besides, to me the most important thing right now is how long sprint's going to keep the unlimited data option. Who knows,in two years with everyone capping data, might as well go to the provider who's gonna fill the bucket fastest. Who exactly is going to be the fastest? That's anyones guess right now, but it doesn't really matter because alot can change in two years.
based on my experience, AT&T's 3G performance (latency aside) with an HSUPA-enabled device is excellent and trumps Sprint's 3G by far. I constantly pull 3.5 mbit/s down, 1.6mbit/s up on my phone, which is comparable or perhaps a slight tick below Sprint's WiMax performance levels.
N1 users on Tmo raped us in speed tests still.. so sprint is still slow.. I get usually 2-3mb down most of the time, N1 users are boastin 5-10mb+ down on tmo 3g.. =\
I average 3-5Mgs here in Chicago on 4G
Stupid argument since Sprint/Clearwire is switching to 802.16e Enhanced by the end of the year, with a software update and a few hardware changes. Research the stats for it, and then see if you agree with that post.
Sprint will be using LTE, one way or another. They've already contacted suppliers a few months ago.
Sent from the Samsung Fascinate with Verizon.
Heh. This is why I posted this thread. Just about everyone is more informed than I am. I love my EVO but everyone was looking at me like I was crazy when switching to Sprint.
I'm mostly concerned because I do find Sprint's current 3G-4G offerings to be pretty slow... and my reception isn't as good as my Fiance's who is on AT&T. She points that out all the time...
I'd prefer to have a balance between good reception and good internet speeds. These are phones, after all
If you stick with a smartphone long enough, you'll realize that at the beginning of the year one carrier might be dominant, but by the end of the year the title has changed.
Stick with what you've got (unless your on Cricket ), and you'll be alright.
~Jasecloud4
It also comes down to unlimited data vs limited data. The other guys are all changing their data plans (tmobile and sprint aside).
What its the point if slightly faster speed if you can only use it half the month because of data caps.
I'm happy with mine. I got this speed while using wifi tether on my laptop
Also note I used the browser to test this speed

I was thinking about this yesterday while stuck in the car streaming Pandora. I am glad I don't have to worry about how my music I stream for fear of running out of data.
The Everything Plan is what will keep me on Sprint, even if they are a bit slower.
The compression and technologies (html5, silverlight) are going to provide better performance streaming with less throughput. So are you really ever going to need more than 3-5mb on your phone? You arn't going to hit many sources that can provide you data faster than you can download.
(I can see needing more if you are tethering multiple devices)

I just worry that their speedy push to 4g is going to leave there 3g network in the dust. Let's face it there are still plenty of places that do not have even a 3g network, at least in my state there is. If someplace doesn't even have access to 3g there is no way they are going to get 4g.
Im letting you know ahead of time that this is a random rant. So I have been wondering what's the real deal holyfield with sprints so called wimax. I read somewhere that wimax really isn't TRUE 4g as it doesn't even max out at true 4g speeds. The most I've hit was about 5mbps. So is it really even 4g? And tmobile hspa + network is that faster that our wimax? My sister comes to my apt in my 4g area and her g2 gets about 6 mbps with her hspa. Why does it seem like gsm has way better data. We all know sprints 3g isn't really 3g its piss poor. If this LTE is supposed to beat out wimax why did sprint roll with it over LTE. I'm thinking sprint wanted to get a **** ton of subscribers so they just went with wimax cause it would roll out way before LTE but I definitely don't think wimax/clear is true 4g. I also heard the clear ceo jumped ship or something lol. If the national standard is supposedly going LTE what would sprint/clear do, will they adopt new technologied in their phones and leave wimax phones out to dry? So the real 4g is LTE and wimax just seems like it should be labeled pre4g, cause I hear LTE will be able to get 10mbps down and 3-5mbps up. That's stronger than most peoples internet eh? I am kind of pissed for paying an extra 10 bucks for 5mbps in a strong area and in my area my 4g hits only about 2. Is sprint going to be the only provider using wimax? The moral of this pointless rant is just to get my knowledge and others about the future/truth of wimax. I just want to understand how this service compares to this new LTE and tmobiles and atts new 4g network. It would be nice just to come in and drop comments on any question asked in this post instead of flame me, or post non sense.
A small search woudl have answered all questions....
First, nobody has a "true" 4G network as no 4G network reaches 100mbps yet. Another thing, Sprint is working on a WiMax/LTE hybrid network, or so it goes. Speed depends where you live. I hit 10mbps easily here in Orlando, some people can't hit above 1. Some goes for ANY network on earth.

Nah I'm pretty happy with my evo I got it late, xmas to be exact but hands down best phone I've ever owned. Just disappointed with sprints 3g because you would expect it to perform but it doesn't. Way to rub in your 12mbps against my 2 lol
I got almost 12 as you can see in my signature.
I hit 9-10 all the time in Houston. Hell I get 1-2 on 3g. And you can bet Verizon will charge for lte.
funny you should mention that gsm is always faster than sprint cdma. i was in denton tx last night for an interview and compared my evo on 3g(running gingerbread with no wimax) and i got 1566 kb down compared to his 447 kb down. denton is a college town but not exactly small. i usually get 2-5 mbps down on 4g but havent tested it lately as i am doin the gb thing
I don't mind... if Sprint goes under because of this failed investment, we'll be able to jump ship without ETFs anyways... no worries. ;P

i live in Miami and the 3G is decent as far as comparing it with that pos "3G" t-mobile used to give me. with tmo i was lucky to get 600kbps. with sprint i get 600-1600 average on 3G, and 2400-5600 average on 4G. and peak 4G speedtest is on my signature lol

maybe because there's not alot of people connected to these antennas
You guys all seem to be getting pretty good speeds. Me on the other hand I rely on 3g I might get 1 mbps on a good day and I'm happy.
The server you use on speedtest makes a huge difference as well, try to use one that has an internet backbone near it like Atlanta, DC or Chicago for the east coast. I get maybe 2 or 3mbps on speedtest with a server that is not 30 miles from here yet I get 8mbps on another that is almost 1000 miles away.
WiMAX and LTE are still considered pre-4G atm but it's an actual 4G network, all we need is a firmware update to have true 4G. at&t & t-mo on the other hand will Never have real 4G with HSPA+. btw, I get 8mbps in Orlando and on the east coast near there all the time using the atlanta and harold, ky servers, actual speeds during use vary though.
For anyone wanting (or waiting) for a Sprint version of the Xoom, it looks like it's going to be a real thing.
http://www.bgr.com/2011/03/18/image-of-sprint-branded-motorola-xoom-surfaces-online/
It also appears that it will have the silver back.
While I would have probably preferred a Sprint Xoom, since Im already a Sprint customer, I'll be satisfied with the additional accessories that will probably be made available (if not by Sprint, then simply due to manufactures catering to a larger market).

Yeah I was looking forward to the WIFI xoom.. I might hold off for now.
I'm actually glad I went ahead and got it with Verizon. Many times I have two totally different signal strengths on my phone and Xoom. Hopefully this means I will have better coverage at any given moment... plus Verizon's data is definitely faster than Sprint's in my area.
But yeah, please let's get some more accessories!

I hadn’t really thought of it that way, but you raise an interesting capability. Armed with my Sprint Evo and a Verizon Xoom, you would then be able to pretty simply wirelessly tether one to the other… based upon whichever had the strongest network where you happen to be.
UGH. How much does it cost to add an additional device to sprint's unlimited plan, anyone remember? I'm still probably getting the wifi.
Sweet! I was already planning to return my Verizon Xoom today anyways, but now I know I can get one again when the Sprint one comes out.

Well with the Sprint Galaxy Tab, you have 2 options:
2GB for 29.99 or
5GB for 59.99
And of course if this is a 4G device, they'll probably slap on the $10 Premium Data fee.
I have an evo as you can tell by my sig and I live in a 4G city (wimax and lte), first wimax sucks unless you are stationary. You can take 3 steps or just walk inside and lose signal. I'm definitely going to love having lte over wimax. This is just my opinion as I've tried wimax and lte here in my city, bring on this lte upgrade for my xoom

Have to agree. I had the Evo from release till January and the 4G is just not useful at all. I used it on 3G 99% of the time. I bought the Evo because my city was one of the main launch areas with "full 4G coverage". The problem was, if I was inside my apartment, I couldn't even get a single bar of 4G, no matter what the coverage map says (said I was in 100% strong 4G area). Even downtown I could get 1-2 bars inside, and maybe 3-4 outside. The problem is that the 4G speeds required me to be outside generally, and not moving because the service was so spotty I'd get choppy performance.
Not to mention that the 4G radio crushed my battery, and the speeds were mediocre. I got about 3mbps down/1mbps (capped) up. Not worth the drain for speeds only 1mbps more download vs. 3G speed.

When I signed my contract with T-Mobile I already figured tbey would be getting bought out befor my contract was up. I just didn't know who would buy them out. I just bope the transition goes smoothly and that and T-Mobile customers that have unlimited data plans get to keep the unlimited data plans. I can not live with a 2GB cap.
It makes major since for att. after all in the usa this would totally kill any reasons for an unlock for smartphones or the iphone, since there would be no other carrier.
This means, higher prices, lower data caps, higher fees, and lower customer service.
att + tmobile = verizon, but with out the unlimited internet.

I think you might be wrong there.
You see the network will now be lets say 2xStronger that it is now. meaning, unlimited data usage might come back, since the network will now be able to handle the load.
Example, lets say Dallas, Texas. again this is just a example. it has lets say 5 AT&T towers and 7 T-mobile towers. since both companies will be having the same spectrum for voice and data, there will be 12 towers supplying the necessary amount of voice and data.
This only makes a stronger network. download speeds speeds will be out the roof, and unlimited might come back since there will a stringer network to back it up, if it doesn't, maybe larger data caps instead of the typical 2Gbs, 4 or 6GB.\
BTW, if you have unlimited ATM im sure you will be grandfathered into unlimited.
Fair Warning AT&T, I refuse to do business with you. Come the first quarter of 2012 I will switch to Verizon.
i find it funny how verizon gets an iphone, att reacts by buying a whole network. LOL

No, you won't get unlimited data usage back, you won't get larger data caps, you only get monopoly.

AT&T currently have their capped plans, and T-Mobile was suffering from limited spectrum. All that they're doing is combining customers. Sure, the network will be larger, but they're bringing in all the T-mobile customers, too.
Silver Lining
A merger like this will take forever. We won't see any change for at least 12 months. And you know Verizon won't take it lying down.
Hmm, maybe the gov't will break up AT&T again. Hell it's only been 30 yrs since the last time they did it. And we all know what happened to that...
But for us HD2 users on AT&T...how will AT&T handle TMo's 3G network? They would have to allow backward compatibility. Which means all frequencies work on AT&T. Which means 3G on HD2 running on AT&T. Makes illogical sense, just like AT&T buying TMo.
Ahh one can dream.
Yeah, when I read this earlier I was disappointed. I left at&t for a variety of reasons, mainly because of data caps & horrible customer service. I will never go Verizon, so it looks like I'm headed to Sprint as soon as my T-mo contract is up!
Also I don't think this will benefit T-Mobile users, as at&t will be flooding our towers & slowing things down for us. But it will take around 9 months before we notice those things and about a year before it's final.
But I will NOT be signing back on with T-Mobile/at&t.
If this effects my 5.99 t-zones unlimited internet I will be pissed as hell
i for one would rather use a tin can string before i go back to at&t, even if they offer me a comparable android phone in exchange for my hd2. Shame that the best phone i've ever had will soon lose 3g capability.

man i wish i had your optimistic outlook on things. I think it would be more likely for ATT to keep current caps in place in order to allow future subscribership growth without investing money on infrastructure.
It's f*#king Ma Bell, back from the damned grave. Go back you old hag.
I'm actually happy for this! Why? In my country, TMo sucks big time. No reception anywhere, and 3g only on 2/3 cities. So, by uniting at&t and t-mobile, we'll of course have better reception and more than 2g everywhere. I am actually excited by this. Best phones+best reception=win. And yeah, i know the prices, but that could change. What is sure is that we'll have the best phones and the best reception. So it's just a matter of time and patience.
i really dont know why everyone is *****ing. for those of you on T-Mobile everything will stay the same. only thing that will be diffent will be your bill and the network name on your phone. becuase you all will be grandfathred into whatever plans you all have. if at all it will be better for all us since there will be a bigger & faster network.

I agree I've had a 4g device for almost a year now with 4g not even driving distance away...I have to travel about a little over an hour, maybe a little more, to get 4g in the city, they got to do something or have a backup plan...I don't think the kyoceras working...
I though it was Sprint's plan to move on without them? I read an article a couple weeks ago that a bunch of Sprint execs had resigned from Clearwire's board. This was just before they announced (or at least rumors began) of moving to LTE.
Doesn't surprise me that Verizon will have their 4g reaching more customers in 1 year than we have now.. I love Sprint, but, they are behind at&t/verizon for a reason.
I have had an EVO since launch and only used 4g on a brief trip out of town. It now looks like I will be upgrading to another phone without ever really using 4g on my EVO. That's sad.
I guess people thought VZW was lying when they said they'd have their entire 3G network covered with LTE by 2013.
Same here. On a trip to pa I used in pa in a certain spot for about 5 minutes

its not that big of a deal
Clear has been having LTE tests in AZ and the wimax equipment as I understand it will be super easy to upgrade to LTE - then sprint releases the LTE devices and BOOM LTE is everywhere that WIMax Was..
http://www.clear.com/blog/size-matters/
sprint always tries to bring new tech first...
but always seem to fail in the follow through.
What spectrum was that phoenix testing done on? 2400mhz??
What speeds does Wimax have when there's only 1 user on it?
That video seems very promising considering how those speeds were faster than my Uverse.

That's part of the problem - there isn't much coverage and where there is coverage, quite frankly it sucks. I live in Houston and leave 4g off because the coverage is so spotty.

Lol idk I just feel they had a good idea but it wasn't the right hardware to put out with it, you see my point, I will definitely give it a chance but my opinion is no as of right now, I'm just gonna have to wait
I would rather have the expanded backend like T-Mobile has, where a normal 3g phone will pull down 5mbps. 21 mbps down is nice but what would I need that bandwidth on a phone. Embedded in a laptop nice, used in the middle of the country where alot of.people don't even have internet access that would be amazing

After Tmobiles new plan trotting after 2gb of use, I could care less about 4g as long as I'm not throttled. I could eat 2 gigs in a day if there's enough music to download.

It is almost embarrassing how many people have not gotten to use their 4g on their Evo. I went to San Diego from Phoenix and I still wasn't even able to find any 4g connection. I've really enjoyed the rom experience with the Evo, but I was really looking forward to the 4g stuff.
Luckily bay area has 4g. It is amazing how just a few years ago dsl was screaming fast now my phone can blow it away.
I'll be another upgrading to an evo3d without ever really using 4g on my htc evo......4G!

I agree with this, in my area Sprint consistently pulls about 200-400 kbps down on 3G. A friend with VZW showed me his 3G speed test results - routinely around 1500-1700. If I had speeds like that, I wouldn't ever even want or need 4G.
I like Sprint, but man their 3G is very disappointing. During lunch hour on weekdays, I've seen it drop to nearly 50 kbps. It makes me yearn for the days of blazing fast dialup modems... :/

This is what I used to say about T-Mobile where I live in Utah. I average what your friend is getting on Verizon with Sprint's 3G network here.
Speed test sitting at my desk at work right now (about my average 3G speeds, usually a little higher):

And with a really weak 4G signal:
Further north 4G I can hit up to 6,000-7,000. Not that I ever use it.
EDIT: Interesting that the upload speeds were the same lol

Sprint in my area is fine. Holds around 1mpbs so not to bad. However Verizon in this area kinda sucks cause there is so many people on it. Two of my friends had to tether to me while tailgating just to get some.bets off

They are saying they will have 4g in my area by the end of the year ... I will believe it when I see it lol
