Find out if 4g is coming to your area easily and accurately

I don't know why I never thought of this before, but I'm constantly checking my area on the clearwire website for 4g., and I found something awesome.
The 4g area is always getting closer and closer to my house, only a few cities away, but it's just not here yet.
So I called the number above the map (877) 499-6681) to "ask" about getting clear service for my house. I gave the rep my address, and of course, no 4g. BUT only 2 months away from getting 4g coverage!
So if you want the most accurate answer on when you might be getting 4G service, get it straight from the horse's mouth.
Btw if anyone's wondering what area I'm referring to, it's the Springfield/Holyoke/West Springfield/Westfield area of western MA, so we're getting 4G! WOOHOO!

I think that may just be a standard answer they give... Cause I tried their chat function and this was the response I received.
(CLEAR REP'S NAME REMOVED): We are expanding very rapidly, and you should be able to expect coverage within the next few months.
That does not give me hope.

Here in San Diego, Ca. Sprint's telling customers that 4G is coming by the end of the year... that's now and..? I hope they're not doing that to sell more phones because they sold my bro' an Epic 4G with that line.

I heard that San Diego was getting it soon, didn't hear/see a timeline though.

Yep. Using Sprint's 4G map I see that I'm blanketed in it, and I rarely can connect at my apartment. The high spectrum of WiMax makes it hard to penetrate through buildings and different terrain. So on paper they can say you should technically get 4G, but you won't.
The funny thing is that even when I go to a Starbucks across the parking lot from a ClearWire retail store, I can't even hold a signal
It's gonna keep being hit or miss till it gets rolled out really widely and there are overlapping towers everywhere.

In Atlanta we were one of the first cities to get it but its still pretty blotchy as to where you can and cant get service. Im keeping my eye on Verizon's LTE.... they're supposed to be up and running here and have phones out the first half of next year.

LTE is great as long as you're independently wealthy and can pay their overages. According to PC Magazine you can use your piddly cap with their speeds in 2 hours. They have increased the speed to never before seen levels but unfortunately with the draconian caps they have not actually increased your ability to consume data. I am happy I just recently hopped from Verizon because things like that and their continued push for higher and higher prices is going to be their undoing.
Oh wait, I forgot, they're getting the iPhone so they're fine.

Right there with ya ... That map shows me as DARK GREEN at the house ... Good luck getting connected ... Never happens ... But most everywhere I go, I'm good ...

I just checked the map and there is clear service in my street but I still don't get 4g I don't think they are with sprint

Its the same as Sprint coverage... the coverage just isnt anywhere near as good as indicated on that map. I sit right in the middle of two towers.... one about a quarter of a mile to the east and one about a half a mile to the west and get nothing. But if you go right up the street it jumps from no bars to 4 bars in an instant.
Funny thing is... a Clear rep came to my neighborhood advertising their service over here and I told them they may as well turn around. She said we have coverage here... I pulled out my evo and showed her the 4G constantly scanning and she tried to demonstrate with her modem and what do ya know... no 4G.

I chatted with one of the reps and there is no plans to put 4g where I am :-(

lol, I bet you made her day. Some people were reporting the last wimax radio upgrade let them get 46 where they previously couldn't. Maybe you will get lucky with the next update. I'm surrounded by cities with it where I am but I'm still waiting for it here.

i think 4g is overrated. i mean there is nothing i ever use that would require anything faster than 3g. had a friend who went to Chicago and Florida where they had it and he said he didnt notice a difference at all and just used wifi. im sure its faster then 3g but 3g works fine for me.

Hopefully is out by the end of the year

This is what it looks like for me, the 4g Map keeps increasing from the ct side into MA via the CT river:

So I was reading a news article that said that t-mobile would be doubling the speed of hspa+ every year(or was it every two years?) Would the boost allow us to get faster speeds(past 14mb) or just help the phone get to 14mb like what hspa+ does for non hspa+ phones example being the vibrant getting speeds close to hspa 7.2?

You won't see the G2 benefit that much since the hardware only supports up to 14 mbps. You may see the latency drop though with T-Mobile increasing the speeds of their network.

It would allow us to utilize the full potential of the current max speed but unless the chip we have supports faster than 21.1Mbps or hspa++ then that's the best we could get and would need to upgrade to a different phone to go any faster. 21.1 Mbps is by no means slow though, so I wouldn't see a need to go faster other than simply because we can. That's just over 2.6 MBps by the way and the average cable internet is 15-25Mbps (1.875 - 3.125MBps), plenty fast for most of us.
By the way, it's 21.1 for 4G according to T Mobile, 14Mbps is *just* fast 3G which I was able to get on my slide, though I never saw those speeds. UMTS is 3G, HSPA is fast 3G and HSPA+ is 4G. Or that's how I've always understood it.

Yup our network, the way the cores are built are actually capable of (theoretical) speeds of over 100mbps I don't think we will ever push it that far, but as soon as we can support the output it will be updated. However most phones can only support up to 14 mbps so the next update will be the only one that matters for a while. I'm sure as you know we will try to expand the curent 4g network as much as we can befor we will up the juice. In the next upcoming year you will see a new line of phones come out with some pretty impressive stats to go along with the update.

Sure, according to the 4G standards released a short while back - no phone carrier even comes close to 4G and won't for a very long time. 100Mbps is just insane, that's 12.5 MBps which far exceeds any persons needs on a cell phone and even for home/business usage. Maybe if you're trying to run a data center from your G2 it would be useful.
From a marketing standpoint, 21.1 is 4G - it's the next step up (and the fastest). After that is HSPA++ at 48Mbps, still not even close to the PC 4G definition but what do we care - it's fast as hell!

True either way were still getting faster speeds! I think I'm gonna stick to my g2 for awhile then. My speeds are already fast and constant.

Technically hspa is not real 4g, but what people really care about from 4g is speed, hspa is proven as fast and in the majority of tests prove it to be faster than any current 4g network so I'm not sure why people have the need to point this out. Some people just need to nit pick everything. And yes 100 mbps isn't realistic for phones however for some applications like web connect sticks or new devices like galaxy tabs online gaming from everywhere will be a real posibilty. 100 mbps would be peak real average speeds would be more like 60 mbps still crazy fast. All in all don't expect anything like this anytime soon.

What speeds do you guys get in your city? Ive never seen anyone close to 14mbps. I get about 3-4mbps in houston.

I live in saginaw,texas 5 miles away from downtown fort worth. I average around 5-6 mbs normally. I get great signal as the tower is down the road from me. My phone recently just got the hspa+( my phone had a bug that would only allow it to connect to 3g). And I was getting 2mb and down. Is your phone rooted with sense by any chance?

Sorry, HSPA+ is most definitely not 4G. It's no more 4G than EDGE was 3G. It's still using 3G technology.
In that press release, LTE-Advanced is proper 4G, as it refers to. I can't see anything there saying that HSPA+ is 4G.
Edit - ok, I take all that back. Looks like the ITU have done a U-turn and decided that because so many companies started calling HSPA+ 4G, to make that a legal definition. Sounds bizarre to me :facepalm:

Hehe that's why I gave my source so I didn't sound like a *complete* idiot

It used to be that 4g was 100mbps but the itu downgraded the classification so now technically vzw lte, sprint wimax, and tmob hspa+ can all be classified as 4g. With that said, most tmob customers are still seeing threshold speeds of like 3 or 4 mbps and at most 6 or 7mbps. Vzw lte speeds under ideal conditions aren't much better - maybe 12 - 14mbps from what I have heard (but prob more widespread and no 2mbps speeds being billed as 4g). I believe under ideal conditions and current tech, wimax produces the fastest real world speeds but vzw and tmob should be catching up soon.
However, with an hspa+ capable radio the g2 (if you hang onto it for another year or two) should see full hspa+ speeds and I guess its technically capable of anything that radio spectrum can push out with firmware/radio software updates.

lol @ people who didn't realize ITU updated their definition of 4G - I actually think that the 3GPP considers EDGE to be a "3G technology" in some regards - don't ask.
Regardless, in 2011 TMO is going to be rolling out HSPA+ 42 - that should merit a speed increase slightly on HSPA+ enabled devices and most certainly a latency drop.

Yeah T-Mo in the Seattle area is the ish. My sig is at my house with only 3 bars of reception...

The terms "3G" and "4G" are worthless. All that really matters is what the actually speed of the network is. It is ridiculous to argue over what is or what isn't 4G.

Sprint Xoom

For anyone wanting (or waiting) for a Sprint version of the Xoom, it looks like it's going to be a real thing.

Yeah I was looking forward to the WIFI xoom.. I might hold off for now.

I'm actually glad I went ahead and got it with Verizon. Many times I have two totally different signal strengths on my phone and Xoom. Hopefully this means I will have better coverage at any given moment... plus Verizon's data is definitely faster than Sprint's in my area.
But yeah, please let's get some more accessories!

I hadn’t really thought of it that way, but you raise an interesting capability. Armed with my Sprint Evo and a Verizon Xoom, you would then be able to pretty simply wirelessly tether one to the other… based upon whichever had the strongest network where you happen to be.

UGH. How much does it cost to add an additional device to sprint's unlimited plan, anyone remember? I'm still probably getting the wifi.

Sweet! I was already planning to return my Verizon Xoom today anyways, but now I know I can get one again when the Sprint one comes out.

awesome was planning on taking mine back to cosco to get the wifi version but now I will wait for the sprint version. I get a 25% discount on bill Wonder how much data plan will cost.

Well with the Sprint Galaxy Tab, you have 2 options:
2GB for 29.99 or
5GB for 59.99
And of course if this is a 4G device, they'll probably slap on the $10 Premium Data fee.

I have an evo as you can tell by my sig and I live in a 4G city (wimax and lte), first wimax sucks unless you are stationary. You can take 3 steps or just walk inside and lose signal. I'm definitely going to love having lte over wimax. This is just my opinion as I've tried wimax and lte here in my city, bring on this lte upgrade for my xoom

I agree. My City has full wimax coverage and unless you're outside and standing still you can't use it. Sprint really picked a loser with wimax.

Have to agree. I had the Evo from release till January and the 4G is just not useful at all. I used it on 3G 99% of the time. I bought the Evo because my city was one of the main launch areas with "full 4G coverage". The problem was, if I was inside my apartment, I couldn't even get a single bar of 4G, no matter what the coverage map says (said I was in 100% strong 4G area). Even downtown I could get 1-2 bars inside, and maybe 3-4 outside. The problem is that the 4G speeds required me to be outside generally, and not moving because the service was so spotty I'd get choppy performance.
Not to mention that the 4G radio crushed my battery, and the speeds were mediocre. I got about 3mbps down/1mbps (capped) up. Not worth the drain for speeds only 1mbps more download vs. 3G speed.

The reason tht is because sprint borrows 4g wimax from clear
So they get the high frequency tht have a hard time pentrating material....clear uses low wimax so u get it good in 4g coverage area

even side by side all spectrum aside the LTE is faster than WiMax anyways in real-world use.

I agree I've had a 4g device for almost a year now with 4g not even driving distance away...I have to travel about a little over an hour, maybe a little more, to get 4g in the city, they got to do something or have a backup plan...I don't think the kyoceras working...

I though it was Sprint's plan to move on without them? I read an article a couple weeks ago that a bunch of Sprint execs had resigned from Clearwire's board. This was just before they announced (or at least rumors began) of moving to LTE.

Doesn't surprise me that Verizon will have their 4g reaching more customers in 1 year than we have now.. I love Sprint, but, they are behind at&t/verizon for a reason.
I have had an EVO since launch and only used 4g on a brief trip out of town. It now looks like I will be upgrading to another phone without ever really using 4g on my EVO. That's sad.

I guess people thought VZW was lying when they said they'd have their entire 3G network covered with LTE by 2013.

Clear has been having LTE tests in AZ and the wimax equipment as I understand it will be super easy to upgrade to LTE - then sprint releases the LTE devices and BOOM LTE is everywhere that WIMax Was..

Clear has been having LTE tests in AZ and the wimax equipment as I understand it will be super easy to upgrade to LTE - then sprint releases the LTE devices and BOOM LTE is everywhere that WIMax Was..

That's part of the problem - there isn't much coverage and where there is coverage, quite frankly it sucks. I live in Houston and leave 4g off because the coverage is so spotty.

I agree I've had a 4g device for almost a year now with 4g not even driving distance away...I have to travel about a little over an hour, maybe a little more, to get 4g in the city, they got to do something or have a backup plan...I don't think the kyoceras working...

I would rather have the expanded backend like T-Mobile has, where a normal 3g phone will pull down 5mbps. 21 mbps down is nice but what would I need that bandwidth on a phone. Embedded in a laptop nice, used in the middle of the country where alot of.people don't even have internet access that would be amazing

After Tmobiles new plan trotting after 2gb of use, I could care less about 4g as long as I'm not throttled. I could eat 2 gigs in a day if there's enough music to download.

It is almost embarrassing how many people have not gotten to use their 4g on their Evo. I went to San Diego from Phoenix and I still wasn't even able to find any 4g connection. I've really enjoyed the rom experience with the Evo, but I was really looking forward to the 4g stuff.

Luckily bay area has 4g. It is amazing how just a few years ago dsl was screaming fast now my phone can blow it away.

I'll be another upgrading to an evo3d without ever really using 4g on my htc evo......4G!

I agree with this, in my area Sprint consistently pulls about 200-400 kbps down on 3G. A friend with VZW showed me his 3G speed test results - routinely around 1500-1700. If I had speeds like that, I wouldn't ever even want or need 4G.
I like Sprint, but man their 3G is very disappointing. During lunch hour on weekdays, I've seen it drop to nearly 50 kbps. It makes me yearn for the days of blazing fast dialup modems... :/

This is what I used to say about T-Mobile where I live in Utah. I average what your friend is getting on Verizon with Sprint's 3G network here.

Sprint in my area is fine. Holds around 1mpbs so not to bad. However Verizon in this area kinda sucks cause there is so many people on it. Two of my friends had to tether to me while tailgating just to get some.bets off

Just vacationed to downtown San Diego - no 4G. And upon my return back to downtown Phoenix... yep, still no 4G either.

I get perfect max 4g in manhattan every where but I'm lucky if I get one bar in brooklyn

yep, texas seems to have one of the best 4g networks, i have great 4g in dallas, cedar hill, duncanville, and also down south in houston and san antonio

Yeah even us suburbanites have the 4g in tx. I always kind of laugh a little when I see people excited about getting it in a big city..

What makes me angry is that the upload speeds that EvDO Rev.A can do are faster than the throttled upload at 1.5Mbps on Sprint's 4G network. You can literally upload faster in 3G mode than you can in 4G mode. To make things worse, the average speeds I see with 4G are those that can be achieved in 3G.
Yet the 802.16-2005 standard allows 128Mbps downstream and 56Mbps upstream. For mobile WiMAX. Not fixed. It's beginning to become a joke considering the spectral efficiency of WiMAX paired with all the money Sprint dumped into building the back-haul for their 4G network. They need to stop throttling the hell out of their 4G network and take care of the trouble spots later. It's stupid.

Here in Denver I usually get 5 or 6 Mb speeds on WiMax, but I only turn it on when I have something big to download, which is rarely. Other than bragging rights I really don't feel much need for that kind of bandwidth on my phone. Reminds me of the people who overclock their phones to get super-high benchmarks. As long as the phone runs smoothly who cares about the numbers.

And just calling it 4g is a lie... and idk where sprint says they have the fastest 4g, their claim is allways The 1st in 4g... cuz they launched the first "4g" network, apparently it doesn't matter that its crap...

Very high speed I live in austin texas and get 4g almost every ware but the highest VERY RARE speed seen is about 10 mbps down and 1.8 up.
Normally I see is 4 mbps down and 1.5 up with full bars.....
Verizon speed are hell of fast there to bad verizon lte is not in austin texas

There is an easy fix for this don't yah know
Jump ship to Verizon, pay twice as much, be limited on your data, and you too can have super fast speeds that you cant afford to use

Where in Denver? I was at Elitch's on Saturday and got garbage for 4g.. No more than 1 bar if I was lucky with constant timeouts from websites. Connections around DTC aren't much better. I'm starting to wonder if I have a problem with my phone...

I live in north carolina and i'm used to getting somewhere between 7-10 mbps down and around 1.3-1.5 up. sometimes it will jump from 11-13 mpbs down. it just depends on where you live.

Where in NC are you getting that speed? In Charlotte I only get 2.5 - 4 mbps down, with 1.4 up. I don't think I've ever managed over 7 here.

In general my Fiance's Thunderbolt gets far greater 4G speeds than my Epic does in the Tri State area.
Verizons LTE connection seems far more stable as well. Sprints 4G is incredibly spotty most of the time.

Not to mention average 3G speeds of VZW are 1.5 - 2x the speeds of Sprint... but so are the prices. I opted to keep my SERO premium instead of jumping on VZW unlimited data family plan with my s/o, like the Epic but now wonder whether I made the right decision.
