Are there any NON throttled 4g data plans out there? - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Well I got my brand-new Samsung galaxy S3 (off contract) and I’ve been playing around the last couple of weeks streaming video and whatnot and to my surprise I get the dreaded text message from AT&T stating that I just got throttled. This is the first-time and I am PISSED!! I am SURE this has been covered before but it’s the first time for me. I had no idea exactly how much they throttled you by until now. I mean you can’t do anything once they tightened the noose. I am grandfathered in with an unlimited LTE plan also which really makes it that much more irritating. Well I guess I need to download that app that finds free hotspots. I am in the San Antonio Texas area and we have good mobile data coverage down here so I have to wonder if there are any providers offering a truly unlimited non-throttled or less throttled 4g (of some kind) data plan. I know that Sprint is just getting their LTE service fired up and they are offering an unlimited plan in my area and technically I am not under contract right now which I made abundantly clear to the AT&T employee that I was speaking with (ranting to) like she cared. Does Sprint pull the same crap that AT&T does? Do I have any options? Thanks in advance.

Sprint just deployed their LTE recently and I've seen data speeds around 30+ MB/s reported by users in Texas

We have unlimited data at Sprint. I've never been throttled even when I spent a month on roam and used like 35GB.

I'm a moron. Nm.

When I'm throttled on att ... my data speed goes from LTE to regular 3G , which is more then enough to stream video and music. How slow are you getting?

I went from almost 50mbs down to .5mbs down and up! Its enough to do little stuff but that's not the point. Its just unacceptable to be THAT limited on an UN-limited plan. Ive been with them 10 years since they were SWB and Cingular Wireless and Ive never come close to 5 gigs until now. How do we stream video and other data intensive stuff on 5 lousy gigs a month? Sprint offers Unlimited LTE in my area NON throttled according to Sprint rep. I will go to Sprint store tomorrow and see how fast it is. I am not under AT&T contract so I can shop around. The plan im on is almost as much as the unlimited Sprint plan so no big price difference. Is there a catch to Sprints data service? Do they start charging extra or or limit download size or cut you off if you tethering or anything? Is Sprint a good alternative to AT&T? Sprint seems the logical choice if thier speed is equal or near AT&Ts. Is AT&Ts call quality better or Sprint? Inst Sprint CDMA? Info greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Good god, may I ask what you use all that data doing? I'm getting 10mbs on sprint.

To answer you question there are no gimmicks with Sprint when it comes to unlimited data. There plans really are unlimited and I live in Atlanta where my 4gLTE just activated and I am very pleased with the speeds. I'm loving Sprint right now.

Since the 5th, I've switched to Sprint. Coverage blows in stl, but blown past my 2gb cap I had with att and living that so far. Some coverage and I will be set!
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

If I had lte on sprint I'd be all over it. But 3g by me is horrible and no service whatsoever at my house really kills it. So I recently switched to att where my coverage is awesome and my 3g is easily 8x faster on average. If lte on sprint ever comes to my area I will certainly reconsider my choice. Until then ill live with my 5gb att cap.

The only reason Sprint has been able to offer truely unlimited plans is because the speeds were just too slow to generate any meaningful volume. With LTE now, they will be in the same position (likely worse equipped) once volume increases across the network. Enjoy it while it lasts. I certainly wouldn't be jumping ship having unlimited (5g) with ATT in hand to have fully unlimited data for a year or so.

Sprint doesn't cut you off or anything when it comes to data usage (unless you're roaming.) Go to 500 gb a month if you'd like.

I don't know why people are so up in arms about this stuff. Most carriers are going to tiered data.... it's the way it is and nothing's changing that. It's already been in the rumor mill based on some things done/said by sprint that they too, will be going to throttled/tiered methods to controlling data. I don't know about you guys, but I know that ever since tethering became very popular, TONS of people have been trying to use their mobile data connections as primary internet sources. While it's all fine and dandy that you feel that you should use your data how you want, the networks (and when I say networks, i mean ALL of them) are not yet ready to support everybody's daily habits and still be strong enough to support the current flow of telephone calls or data calls.
When that day comes, by all means, have the carriers put out unlimited data plans and have your telephone be your primary internet connection, but until that day when the networks are strong enough to support it, I still want to be able to make phone calls if need be, especially in an emergency.
By having service, it doesn't give anybody the right to unlimited data, or if they do have it, to use it however they wish. There are still terms and conditions with each company. I know it's not something that everybody likes, but it's the way life is. I am personally pretty glad that the carriers are approaching it this way, because in my area, I see first hand how tethering on smart phones can easily cripple networks at this current time.
I'll give you all an example. I work in a town of 45,000 people, with a "metropolitan" style town surrounding with a grand total of like 80,000 people. That's not a whole lot, which means there's not a ****load of towers here to support our mobile data/calling habits. The thing is, we're in Wisconsin, and there's a lot of places in Wisconsin that you can now get 3G service but can't even get Satellite internet service more than 700kbps. 3G service in those areas average 1-2 megs of service. HSPA/HSPA+ service in some of those areas range from 3-9megs of service. With a cost of $30-80 for sat. service, it's obvious what people would rather use for their internet. If even a 3rd of those 80,000 people started using their phones as primary internet connections, our network would quickly become stressed.
It's becoming more and more obvious to me every day too, that people are wanting to use their phone as a primary internet connection because they can't get land line service or want to save money on a more frequent basis. At least once or twice a day I get a customer coming in and asking us about our mobile internet service because they want to get rid of their land lines to save money, consolidate bills, or can't get land lines at home.
With the rate of how many people are now getting their hands on phones that are capable of tethering, that could very quickly change the work load of the towers on ANY network, be it sprint, at&t, tmo, verizon etc etc.... and it's not going to be for the better.... for now.
I guess the moral of the story is, as a person who still utilizes land line services as his primary source of internet (especially for streaming content/downloading content), I would love to have the cell phone towers I utilize still be able to support my telephone calls, instead of straining to support everybody's netflix addictions. Until the networks are built to support that kind of stuff, I can't say I disapprove of the way things are going on the carriers. Nobody's entitled to anything when it comes to service, and that being said, is what gives freedom of choice when it comes to your carrier choice. Just keep in mind that Sprint is looking more and more likely to follow suit with the tiered/throttled plans... seeing as they've already done it (according to articles, don't know if it's actually implemented) on their hotspot devices. If it's true, and has happened, It's not long till they do it to their smartphones, since every single one is ALSO a hotspot device.
*rant over*
P.S. This post is not meant to directly flame, offend, or belittle anyone for their habits. Everybody is different and has their own opinions, so keep in mind that this is MY opinion and the way I feel. Please keep your responses to it civil, because if they turn childish and mean hearted, i'll make sure the mods know and maybe close it because there's no need for that.

T-Mobile 500mb Data Cap...

I don't listen to any streaming music, nor do I watch any streaming videos, movies, or shows except for a little YouTube now and then. I don't do any major downloads except for a ROM now and then. I still hover around 890mds to 1200mbs per month. 500mbs would kill me!

Yep, but they'll get them when they renew!
Here in Texas, Time Warner is offerening a wireless plan for laptop and mobile users that is 250mbs a month.
Give me a break!
After you use up 250mbs, then they charge you (i believe - going off memory) .10 cents for every 1mb after.. WTF!
Isn't wimax something like clearwire?

They will be capped when they renew their contracts.
When you renew you contract they will just give you a different contract to agree too, and the new data plan will be part of it.
They aren't "grandfathering" anyone in. They just aren't breeching their CURRENT contracts.

I read the article about the 500MB data cap today and was totally freaking out, because I generally use about 2GB worth of data every month. I called T-Mobile and the rep said they had a 5 GB cap and after that your bandwidth will be throttled (which is what I thought the plan was). The T-Mobile rep told me that 500MB is insane and they would never put their cap that low, as you would eat it up in a few days.
Wow even T-Mobile USA agrees 500MB a month is not enough for a smartphone. How is T-Mobile USA affiliated with T-Mobile UK?
I told the rep that if they ever did something like that I would no longer be a T-Mobile customer... She acknowledged and told me T-Mobile would never do anything like that.
After my call with T-Mobile I decided I'd hop on XDA to see if anyone else saw the article about the 500MB cap, and found this thread. Now I wish I would have recorded the call in case T-Mobile ever does reduce their cap like this.

To clarify for you guys about WiMax.
Wimax is a technology much like LTE. Wimax is an extension to WiFi. Clearwire uses Wimax as their technology of choice to provide internet access/Data to their customers. Anyone who wants to can buy a Tower and mount a Wimax antenna on it and use it, just like we use wireless as Wimax has access to a none license frequencies as well as frequencies you need to license to use.
Looks like I won't be picking up anymore prepaid t mobile sim cards when I go to london.

When I signed my contract with T-Mobile I already figured tbey would be getting bought out befor my contract was up. I just didn't know who would buy them out. I just bope the transition goes smoothly and that and T-Mobile customers that have unlimited data plans get to keep the unlimited data plans. I can not live with a 2GB cap.
It makes major since for att. after all in the usa this would totally kill any reasons for an unlock for smartphones or the iphone, since there would be no other carrier.
This means, higher prices, lower data caps, higher fees, and lower customer service.

I think you might be wrong there.
You see the network will now be lets say 2xStronger that it is now. meaning, unlimited data usage might come back, since the network will now be able to handle the load.
Example, lets say Dallas, Texas. again this is just a example. it has lets say 5 AT&T towers and 7 T-mobile towers. since both companies will be having the same spectrum for voice and data, there will be 12 towers supplying the necessary amount of voice and data.
This only makes a stronger network. download speeds speeds will be out the roof, and unlimited might come back since there will a stringer network to back it up, if it doesn't, maybe larger data caps instead of the typical 2Gbs, 4 or 6GB.\
BTW, if you have unlimited ATM im sure you will be grandfathered into unlimited.
Fair Warning AT&T, I refuse to do business with you. Come the first quarter of 2012 I will switch to Verizon.
i find it funny how verizon gets an iphone, att reacts by buying a whole network. LOL

AT&T currently have their capped plans, and T-Mobile was suffering from limited spectrum. All that they're doing is combining customers. Sure, the network will be larger, but they're bringing in all the T-mobile customers, too.
Silver Lining
A merger like this will take forever. We won't see any change for at least 12 months. And you know Verizon won't take it lying down.
Hmm, maybe the gov't will break up AT&T again. Hell it's only been 30 yrs since the last time they did it. And we all know what happened to that...
But for us HD2 users on AT&T...how will AT&T handle TMo's 3G network? They would have to allow backward compatibility. Which means all frequencies work on AT&T. Which means 3G on HD2 running on AT&T. Makes illogical sense, just like AT&T buying TMo.
Ahh one can dream.
Yeah, when I read this earlier I was disappointed. I left at&t for a variety of reasons, mainly because of data caps & horrible customer service. I will never go Verizon, so it looks like I'm headed to Sprint as soon as my T-mo contract is up!
Also I don't think this will benefit T-Mobile users, as at&t will be flooding our towers & slowing things down for us. But it will take around 9 months before we notice those things and about a year before it's final.
But I will NOT be signing back on with T-Mobile/at&t.
If this effects my 5.99 t-zones unlimited internet I will be pissed as hell
i for one would rather use a tin can string before i go back to at&t, even if they offer me a comparable android phone in exchange for my hd2. Shame that the best phone i've ever had will soon lose 3g capability.

man i wish i had your optimistic outlook on things. I think it would be more likely for ATT to keep current caps in place in order to allow future subscribership growth without investing money on infrastructure.
It's f*#king Ma Bell, back from the damned grave. Go back you old hag.
I'm actually happy for this! Why? In my country, TMo sucks big time. No reception anywhere, and 3g only on 2/3 cities. So, by uniting at&t and t-mobile, we'll of course have better reception and more than 2g everywhere. I am actually excited by this. Best phones+best reception=win. And yeah, i know the prices, but that could change. What is sure is that we'll have the best phones and the best reception. So it's just a matter of time and patience.
i really dont know why everyone is *****ing. for those of you on T-Mobile everything will stay the same. only thing that will be diffent will be your bill and the network name on your phone. becuase you all will be grandfathred into whatever plans you all have. if at all it will be better for all us since there will be a bigger & faster network.

Sprint or the radio?

Is Sprints 3G network rapidly going to crap or is it the radios in our Epics?
I'm in Jersey about 15 minutes from Center City. I sit here at work (and it has always been like this) and get a blistering 0.21mbps download speed on 3G. With six full bars. Yet I can go home and double that speed with two bars. (Which is still awful)
4G has never been an issue either coverage or speed. I'm pulling 2.1mbps with 1 bar of 4G as I type this.
I hear Verizon customers now and then in my reading post 3G speed results which a lot of times aren't too far from matching my 4G speeds.
Since having the Epic I've never got a 3G speed greater than 1.2mbps down.. I've noticed though within about the past 4 months their network speed is frustrating at best and .5 mbps down is about average for 3G these days.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I'm in WC, PA and I usually get around 1.5mb/s down and .3-.5 up in 3g. Usually, 6+ up and 2-3 down in 4g. Have you tried you speeds in different areas outside of work?
Yeah.. It is up and down. I just remember a time (4 year sprint customer) where 3G was consistent no matter where you were. If you had coverage your performance good. Heck I remember streaming Slingplayer on my laptop with an aircard for an entire post season of baseball while driving. Now a days Slingplayer on the phone is useless on 3G while standing still.
I'm up for my yearly upgrade discount so I'm just really starting to explore the idea of getting off this phone soon or wait a year and just get off Sprint entirely.

Despite the high prices, the Verizon 4G down speeds are looking really good. I am torn, I would love to just drop TV, get Hulu+ and run it with Verizon 4G, but I would go over the 10GB cap in a couple of days. If they add a truly umlimited plan, I will be VERY tempted to make the switch.
Yeah.. Then there is that. Unlimited. Put up with the flakey speeds but use as much as I want without worry or go to a capped plan with better speeds. It is defintely a catch 22 I am also thinking about. If it wasn't for the excellent 4G coverage I get in my area I probably wouldn't be here. Just summer is about here and road trips start, which is where I start heavily relying on 3G to get through those long journeys.

Yeah that's a tough spot. Sprint does seem to be spotty. But, I would have to imagine that your radio has more to do with the problem than Sprint's towers. Just based on my experience and your previous comments. Maybe try to reset the radio? See if that helps.
It's their network, I was with sprint for almost 10 and just this past year their network started to be completely unusable in my area. So I left and went to verizon and never been happier. And to those saying they are more expensive...my bill is only 3 dollars more a month then it was with sprint lol, that's with a 22% discount on verizon compared to a 23% discount on sprint

What is your phone and data plan on Big Red versus Sprint?
Yep, it's the network. There was a time where I could go anywhere and pull 800+ kbps (been with Sprint since they began deploying EVDO Rev A here). At home in the sticks, I can still pull 1200 down all day every day. 50 miles south around Purdue University, you're lucky to see 400 kbps. They've not kept up with tower backhaul, and I don't see how they're going to deploy 4G in some of these areas that don't even have enough backhaul to adequately service 3G.

I got the thunderbolt, unlimited 3g/4g, unlimited text with 450 minutes, with their equivalent of TEP, and my bill is 78 bucks a month after 22% discount.
On sprint I had their everything 450 plan and TEP and my bill after 23% discount was always around 75 a month. I also had an airave but the 5 dollars was always credited back to me because I had such ****ty service at my house they gave it to me for free.
So I dont really see whats so expensive about verizon because i am finally able to browse on 3g speed that isnt closer towards dialup everywhere I went within a 100 mile radius

Well, your numbers don't really add up, for starters. I pay that for the same plan on Sprint with a 0% discount. And I would pay $90 a month on Verizon, according to their web site. And then get a 10GB monthly data cap. I would jump ship to Verizon if their 4G was actually unlimited, as I said, it could conceivably replace both my internet AND TV bill, as it's plenty fast enough.
Well decided to go Nexus S. Sprint is doing a special right now where I got a full upgrade only 1 year into my contract. Once everything was done and credit for the Epic it cost me an entire $75 to upgrade.
Goodbye Epic

I dont know where you live but I am going through the same damn issue. I am in Atlanta.
Earlier this year 3g was always above 1mb/s and I could connect to 4G anywhere and get between 5-8mb/s
I had to get my phone replaced and right around the same time my speeds have gone to crap. I get 0.2mb/s download no matter where I am with full bars.
And I can barely connecto to 4G indoors, and when I do connect its barely 1mb/s with 2 bars.
I've went to sprint multiple times and they keep telling me its their network. Ive been dealing with these slow speeds for 2 months already. Beyond frustrating. I have to be on 4G to get anything done.
It wont even load the icons images in the market when I am on 3g. Thats how slow it is...
What makes me mad is that I have my epic right beside my coworkers G2X.
He pulls 12mb/s easy and my Epic can barely hold 1mb/s side by side...

Uhhhh.....if you sign up right now their 3g/4g is REALLY unlimited for only 30 a month. They have not gone to tiered data plans yet and if you sign up now you will be grandfathered into unlimited 3g/4g for 30 a month. Here are some threads you can read thru where some people have used as much as 30gb in a month on their 4g

Throtting

So there isn't really any definitive answer, so i'm making topic on it: DOES SPRINT THROTTLE?

HAHA welcome to the "Now Network". Sprint=dial-up speeds. Myself, or my 3 friends on Sprint, haven't gotten above 100kbps since last October. It happens everywhere I travel too. Well, except between 2am and 4am, then it works perfectly fine, when everyone else is asleep.
It seems to me like they do during the day. My 3g is not near as fast as it used to be during the day. It wasnt a gradual decrease. More like a sudden. While my connection at my house still pulls 1.0-1.3mbps at my house during the day, I used to get 2+mbps there during the day. Now I don't get that speed til 1-5am. You're probably thinking "wtf are you *****ing about?!" Cuz it is very fast at my house. ****ty part is that everywhere else its nowhere near 1.0mbps. More like 0.2-0.4. And I'm NEVER home. That's the problem. Oh well. Its either live with it or go pay $40-50 more to get raped by verizon.

Mine used to be around 3Mb/s on 3g, that was when I first got my contract. It seems the more I tethered and used more and more data the slower it got. yestursay I got .25 mb/s! Flashed radios this morning and i'm up to 1.

No, they don't throttle during the day, they dont throttle at all. The reason your speeds are crappy during the day is because there are too many people using it during the day, and each tower's crappy T1 line backhaul can't handle more than a few MB/s total for everyone connected to it.
Darn you other sprint users i'm my area, turn your 3g off!

One thing that we all have to remember is that sprint subcontracts its network to other providers (virgin, republic, boost...) And all their customers uses our network as well.
Think about it, Verizon really doesn't lend their network, that's why you pay higher prices, because you have their full resource.
We pay lower prices but we have to share...
Just a thought...

While going through pdanet I realize 3-500kbs @ the desktop. @ about 5030 MB my d/l speeds sank to 39 kbs have been stuck there since. Called sprint they said my data usage is "suspect" and will be monitored untill my next billing cycle.
So keep it under 9 gigs a day kids.. they WILL throttle you.

The short answer is, "It depends."
I am well versed in the 4G arena, not so much 3g/EVDO.
When you discuss Sprint's 4G network, you are really discussing the re-branding and re-selling of Clearwire's Wimax network. Any discussion of Clearwire's Wimax must include an understanding of N.I.M.S., which stands for, Network Integrity Management System. That's code for THROTTLING!!
In a nutshell, Clear directly, and through its wholesale distributors, continues to sell more bandwidth than it has available to deliver. During periods of low demand, all is well. During times of high demand, N.I.M.S. automatically kicks in. A quick Google search of Clearwire N.I.M.S. should provide the triggers and effects.

To parse Sprint's claim that they do not throttle is easy. They don't; Clear does it for them.

i have sprint and want out. 3g is more like whatever is slower than 1x and unless you're in a major market in first lte rollout you won't have it for quite a while, making you stuck on 3g. Wimax hasn't supported many areas and the rollout was slow. research before committing
My life for Aiur
Wimax is very strong in Chicago too...

I'm on sprint, I have the og epic 4g, wimax was really slow until the devs here figured the epics radio was buggy thanks to samsung. Now I can flash the Nexus modem on to my phone and wimax is amazing, way faster than before and pretty consistent. The evo LTE is having the same problem with their radio right now I believe. Anyways for heavy data users Sprint is great, but it really depends on where you live, figure out what's best for you because crappy data speeds are about as good as throttled data speeds. I hope Samsung does a good job on the note 2 modem.
My experience with Sprint was great till recently. Speeds are horrible and I've had to call twice in two weeks about texts not going through. My wife isn't receiving calls on her Epic Touch. I would seriously reconsider your decision. We will be headed to At&t asap and I plan on picking up a Note 2.

Sprint's data speeds really suck, especially inside buildings.
You might want to get a hotspot and test it out for a month.
Go around the areas you frequent and run speed tests.
Or buy a cheapo Sprint phone off CL and get a month of service. This way you can use it for as long as you wish and then cancel if you don't like the service since you aren't in a contract.
I have yet to ever meet someone who's uttered the phrase, "I'm satisfied with Sprint." Their service problems go back at least 12 years because that's when I used to sell phones with Sprint being one of the carriers.

Welp, maybe we're not meeting in person, but consider this a virtual introduction.
It just so happens I've been with Sprint for the last twelve years & I'm satisfied with Sprint. I'll even go as far as to say, I've had the best experience with Sprint of any carrier. Good quality cellular & data service, customer service has been impressive, & pound for pound, none of the big dogs can beat their pricing (at least not yet). I've had both Verizon & AT&T. Can't speak for T-Mobile, but I'm still with Sprint after 12 years.
And I may be out of line in saying this, but I'm guessing not too many folks go to the retailer specifically just to tell them how great & satisfied they've been with their service or provider, regardless of carrier. Unless they're renewing or accessorizing, they're there because they have a problem with their phone or with the service, with their bill, or with their current carrier/provider & they are looking to switch.
Edit: Sorry OP. To address your question, if I haven't already made it obvious, I do think Sprint is the best choice.

I have $35mo unlimited data on their MiFi.
Right now while waiting for SGN2 to drop I'm also on prepaid TMobile $30mo 100min talk unlimited data unlinited text.
Sprint is amazing and has some of the best customer service I've ever experienced.

Listen to this guy. Seen replies where sprint can be great or plainly suck ass. Seemms it's location dependent so listen to this guy!
I've had Sprint for about 8 years and I can't stand it.
3G data is miserable. They are going with 1900Mhz LTE network, bad building penetration as opposed to Verizon's 900Mhz. . I'm probably going to Verizon, they rock in Los Angeles. Yes, I'm going to deal with the Devil.
I only pay about $50+tax for the SERO plan, if I switch I will end up paying twice as much for similar plan. SERO is like 500mins, unlimited text and data. I read on my bill it said unlimited data roaming also, but I never have tried that. Still it's too cheap to switch over for me.
UTStarcom probably the absolute worst time to compare sprint with the network upgrades taking place. Living in an area that is nearing halfway completion I can tell you yeah,it's long over due (though they are less then a year behind att's start to their still ongoing lte rollout)
Currently I have both Sprint and Att phones.
Call quality for me in Dallas is awesome...and let is comparable if not faster.
We still have the same issues we have always had on att...and speeds slowing compared to when lte went live in Dallas last October
Both have made huge customer service improvements and both are actively working on their network
That being said...check s4g4u.com for speculated upgrade schedule, compare prices w/usage habbits and make a decision.
For me...the unlimited data is a no brainer...but I live in a strong sprint market

i have sprint and want out. 3g is more like whatever is slower than 1x and unless you're in a major market in first lte rollout you won't have it for quite a while, making you stuck on 3g. Wimax hasn't supported many areas and the rollout was slow. research before committing

i agree with you guys. just got done talking to tmobile. i think ill get the galaxy note 2 with them. idc that its only hspa+ 42mbps, that holds its own with the lte networks now anyway. plus, theyll cheaper than what i pay sprint
Just check your local area, graba phone from both and prepaay to test it out.
I hate ATT, because I pay 160 a month for 2 phones, and could be paying 100 with someone else.
Sprint sucks. I've been with all 4 major carriers. For where I live in my state I'd put it in this order.
1. Verizon Wireless
2. T-Mobile (Now true unlimited, NO throttling)
3. at&t (A lot of dropped calls)
4. Prepaid carriers
5. Sprint (Unusable data speeds) and I had wimax with them, it wasn't impressive, maybe 1mb download speeds, for 4G that sucks. I would get some of my texts and calls really late. Like a day or two later. I was like wtf? This voicemail was from 3 days ago? I will never go back to Sprint.
