This is confusing!
I just carried out a soft reset on my device, carried out the same way I always soft reset my device. But after tapping in my lock code, keep getting message stating the code is incorrect.
This has baffled me, as I haven't even installed any new Apps, or carried out any new tweaks. It's as if the PHONE has changed the lock code after doing A SOFT RESET!
This happened to anyone else?
usually associated with installing swype 3.9 on a non tmous phone, although i also half remember similar behavour with exchange (not sure of this bit though)
oh, did you change the lockscreen in cookies? it gives a warning about not using passwords when messing with cookies lockscreen settings.
I haven't even installed any new Apps, or carried out any new tweaks.

I may be wrong, but I clearly remember that soon after the discussion in here became lively since more people started to own the device, this problem has been reported several times even on pristine phones, where the phone would not simply change the code, but forget it altogether :-/
That's why I've never enabled it even if it would be a useful feature.

I never forget my code, as I use the same code as I always have done. So im still baffled about this
this happened to me on my omnia like two years ago. just a little soft reset and i had to hard reset to be able to use my phone again. i had to get all my contacts and data back manually and this was the time i figured why are there so many backup programs for winmo.... didn't know anything about this OS before..
now i just use sim PIN, never had trouble..
Luckily I got SPB backup installed, and have it set to do automatic backup every monday morning @ 3am, but still wondering why the phone lock code.changed simply by doing a soft reset :-/

I've had this happen a couple of times. The best I can come up with is something must write to the code's area whilst the phone is on. Like a buffer overflow... I had it happen on the stock ROM, and also on a custom ROM, but it hasn't happened recently... (I'm now on a recent 23xxx Energy ROM).

The basics of the problem are that the lock button seems to lock the screen but once pressed again it shows whatever was on the screen before, not the lock screen!? Holding the lock button does not come up with the turn off/reset options.
Another odd thing that happens along with this is that any application that is opened or closed the screen flashes black before opening up.
Along with this I have found that the alot of the native apps, including phone, contacts and most annoyingly, CLOCK, crash also. Making me late for work and rendering the phone useless unless I do a battery pull.
I will note that the most odd thing is that I contacted our business contract guy who who i expected to tell me to do a soft reset, told me that the supplier would swap out the phone?! That was last week and the new handset is showing early signs of the same thing.
Neither phones are rooted and I have not installed any unknown sources on the new handset to be sure it wasnt an outside source?!
Any help would be appreciated.

Factory Reset
if not solve ur problems, try Odin flash tools to flash another stock ROM
if not work take to service cause it should be hardware problem.

Well some of my apps install straight onto the phone.
Do you think I should remove as many as possible and try then?

I am having this same exact issue. First happened when I installed a SanDisk Ultra CLASS 10. I thought the card was causing me compatibility issues so I returned it to amazon. This was just a few days ago. The only thing that worked to fix this issue was to remove the battery.
On the way to work today I suddenly couldn't play any music downloaded from Google music to my device. However, I could stream music that was not downloaded to my device. I also couldn't view any pictures in my picture gallery. I tried rebooting the phone and guess what -- I got the same exact issue as the original post above.
I wasn't going to mess with my phone while driving so I made up my mind that I was going to return it to verizon tomorrow. About an hour into work I picked up my phone and it gave me the onscreen instructions to swipe up to get flip board -- same instructions it gives you after a reboot. I then tried playing the same music that wouldn't play before and it played. I tried viewing pictures in the gallery that were inviewable before and they were now viewable.
I'd like to know what is going on too. I can't just give up to the fact that my phone doesn't want to work at certain times of the day so I just have to give it an hour.

The best thing would be to remove all non-factory apps. But yes, start by removing as many of them as possible.
(If that doesn't work, do a factory reset and cache wipe through the recovery menu, and don't restore a single app. (I'm not talking abouy the bloatware, we all have those.))
If there are no problems at that point, add back your apps one by one. (no restoring anything, make sure they are clean installs.)
Eventually you should run into whatever app is causing the issue.

I reset the system to factory settings and started arranging only the installed apps and widgets and I got the same lock screen issues.
This time the phone wouldn't go to the lock screen but it would give me the option to restart or shut down. I set it aside again and when I picked it up a few later it showed me the home screen wwith instructions on how to access flipboard -- as if it was reset! I have a warranty on mine so I'm gonna return it to verizon tomorrow or friday.
Bought 2 S7 edge for myself and my wife. The first time we have the same phone, which should make my mis duties easier. We got the phones hours before a trip, so I didn't have much time to play beforehand. I set up my phone including fingerprints and when we arrived at our hotel, I noticed that the always on display no longer was nor did pull from right work anymore. and I'm sure other things broke too. Both features were turned on BUT when I attempted to do anything that required entering a pin? My pin no longer worked. The fingerprint reader still worked, so I was not locked out. I searched for an answer but gave up and reset the phone via recovery. I prodded my wife to add security to her phone and she and use the fingerprint reader and after a couple of hours? He pin no longer works either. The fingerprint still works but poorly and we can't change that anymore. Is there any way I can get back into the phone without a full reset?
Another disturbing thing? While running Waze a few hours ago, my phone spontaneously reboot. I'm digging the speed especially the camera and battery life vs my old G3, but If it reboots by itself one more time? it goes back!
And I just fixed it myself by happy accident. We decided to bite the bullet and do a factory reset via recovery BUT I goofed and went into bootloader instead (vol down instead of up). When the phone rebooted I tried the pin and it works once again. If it happens again, I'll try booting to recovery and then rebooting to system to see if it fixes the issue too. I've had a bunch of Android phones, a few of them Samsungs and this has never happened before.
I've had my phone for a couple of weeks, and the initial PIN I set up still works. Haven't had any problems like that. No spontaneous reboots, either.

So far, just the one reboot. I'm hopeful it's just a one-off thing. As for the pin thing? I've added a password just in case. It didn't turn out to be that much of a problem, but I hope leaving this here might help someone else who experiences the same event. Curious that it happened to 2 phones in the same family.
Have had my devices since March 11, PIN code has not changed by itself. Have had at least one UI reboot automatically, but I have a ton of apps so no good way to tell what caused it.

Wish I would have read this first. I found my pin not working this morning. I thought I was going crazy. I use the same pin on multiple devices and keep them in sync, so I verified my mind was not toast by pinning into another device. I just completed a factory reset...
my Pin changed spontaneously
I've had my S7 for about 1 week and the pin changed on its own. I always use the same pin. I'm really frustrated and stuck in a 2 year contract with this thing. If I have to keep doing a hard reset every time this happens, I'll break the phone and get a new one under warranty.
As an update, after this happened to my wife's phone it happened to mine a couple of days later. After an apparent reboot over night (update?) my password was gone and I was unable to access the phone. Tried everything including contacting both Sprint, Samsung, tried bootloader and recovery, device manager, ect. No luck. Eventually had to reset. After reset, I changed to pattern (least favorite security option) and the issue hasn't reoccurred.(yet?) even with many reboots. I'm giving it another week and I will set up Samsung Pay and play 50 questions with my bank and cc cards.....again. I was in Home Depot with 500lbs of mulch on my cart when I realized I had no wallet. No problem, I can use Samsung Pay.....till I remember that the card info was wiped out with the last reset...DOH! Tech fail! I won't use a pin or password till I'm sure this bug has been squished.
From what I've gleaned, this is a bug specific to Sprint variants of the S7 and Sprint is aware of the problem.

Got bitten by this bug myself. Have had the S7 edge for a week and a half, fortunately still in the "playing" phase so forced to do a factory reset was not to bad...I too have switched to pattern and no issues either.
Yeah, it's the strangest thing. This happened to me as well only it was a password and not a pin. I honestly thought it was a mistake on my part. About a day after initially getting the device and setting up the fingerprint and password, my phone died ( I was using Gear VR and it didn't alert me that battery was even low), and when I rebooted it said something like " enter password for storage encryption" or something of the sort. I assumed it was my unlock password but it wasn't working....
So I looked all over the internet and all I could find were recommendations to try your normal unlock password. I tried and tried until I got the dreaded "you have 9 attempts remaining before factory reset" popped up. That's when I thought back to when I first set up the password and how I wasn't used to the edge of the screen yet. So I kept accidentally hitting keys on the edge while I was typing (because normally you can rest your hand on the edge, but on this if you do that you're pressing the edge of the screen). So I tried my exact password with one of the characters as a common "typo" that I kept making for that letter. And voila! It worked! Now the weirdness continues.
At this point I'm happy I figured it out but found it SO odd that I typed that password so many times and input a typo.... I must had used that password at least 15 times over that day....the odds of me doing a typo every time..slim. So the whole thing felt extremely sketch so I immediately went to change the password (and just turn off security in general, don't need it, just was playing around with fingerprint and needed password) after it booted up. And, of course, even with the typo the pass no longer worked. I tried it until the wait time between each try was an hour, heh. I tried all sorts of typo variations of the password, but to no avail. But, at least the phone was now ON. So I was able to backup my SMS, Apps, Settings, Themes, etc and prepare for the factory reset. What a wild ride.
I have no idea why it even happened in the first place. I never turned on any encryption and I never turned on "require password on boot up." Those settings were even toggled off when I checked while the phone was still on. (couldn't see all settings without password though).
Even weirder, I have no idea why the password with the typo even worked that one time to get it to boot. That same password never worked again.
IDK how widespread this is, but be CAUTIOUS and back up the things that you need to. Also, sign up for a Find My Mobile type service to unlock your phone and give you remote access should happen to you. Or just disable the security altogether until they announce a bug fix for this issue. I thought I was the only one with this issue and chalked it up to a weird freak occurrence. So thanks for the topic as I now know it wasn't just me.

Update RE: my Sprint S7 with spontaneous pin change
Sprint S7 . I bought my phone 2 weeks ago, about 1 week in the PIN # (I had a 4 digit #) spontaneously changed. I could only get in with my finger print which only works 1/2 the time (don't both trying if your hands were just washed or out of the shower).
I decided to do a factory reset on Tuesday night and used a pattern tracing instead of a # pin. The phone worked fine for 2 days and then it happened again this morning. The pattern was spontaneously changed. I called Sprint, they told me they've heard nothing. I called Samsung same story there. I did try to power off the device (which I hadn't tried before) and turned the phone back on, it did recoganize the original password. So try shutting down and restarting...it might recognize it again. or try safe mode. I'm trying to trouble shoot this. I think the ADT app might be to blame?
This happened to me last week as well. A couple reboots cleared it up. Very odd though.

Saved my freaking life man! Same thing happened to my wife's phone. I went into Boot Mode (power down, the on power up hold power and volume down button), then selected start phone normally.
Her original PIN worked! She was freaking out!

Same problem. Luckily I barely use this phone for anything other than calls. I did a hard reset immediately. You guys are not the only ones out there.
My Samsung S7 Edge just did the same thing this AM. PIN changed, no idea what it is. Fingerprint works. Will back it up and do the reboot first. TMobile so this issue is not Sprint specific.
This just happened to my wife's s7 (Verizon) if you reboot the phone for any reason the back up pin or pattern is required it which it was but doesn't work... And of course were not sure if she made a Samsung account cause if you have a Samsung account supposedly you can change the password from a browser through that site. With this and the screen randomly shutting off and not coming back to life til you run through the boot menu I'm not so sure I'll be getting another Samsung phone.

:crying: To be clear, this occurs on other carriers as I am using Verizon. Issue: PIN is no longer recognized but fingerprint works only until the device is rebooted. If rebooted, fingerprint no longer works and all you can do is receive calls. Samsung advised me that Verizon has a way to reset password.
As I write, Verizon (a level 2 tier tech named William) was able to show me how to fix this by logging into my Google account, and enabling "lock and erase" and clicking on "lock" I was able to change my PIN and my phone works fine! Now I am updating the software as Samsung released a software update on September 1, 2016, that fixes the problem. A word to everyone: be sure your google account is active and includes your S7. Be sure to download the software update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried the Google method but every time I try to change the pin it just tells me that Google verified that there is already a lock screen pin so the new pin/password won't be necessary.. l would love to find a fairly simple route as all the adb pin/password removal videos and such are a little different and well it's my wife's phone so it's a little more important to save her stuff then mine
Hi guys, today when i rebooted my Vernee Apollo Lite i got stucked when trying to access my phone supposely because i was putting a wrong pin when trying to access the android system. I'm pretty sure that i was putting the pin well but nothing works. I've even already done a hard reset to the phone but it stills ask me for a pin that i don't know which is. Can anyone please try to help?
Over the past week or so, I've noticed a couple of really concerning problems with my T-mo Galaxy S7 edge:

The phone entirely hangs up for a significant period of time (1 min - 5 mins) and doesn't respond to any buttons or input, sometimes leading to a restart (https://youtu.be/wuo1Ngc9bqE, https://youtu.be/UXwIPle5rHw)
These problems happen completely randomly - whether I'm at home, work, on a train, it doesn't matter. The app or screen that I'm on doesn't matter as well. The videos I captured were just examples from today, after a fresh factory reset. I'm not sure what else to do at this point. Any suggestions?
Edit: I should also add that I recently sent in my phone to Samsung for a screen replacement (which involves swapping out the entire front plate). I wonder if they messed something up on the hardware side ...
That defenetly looks like it could be a hardware defect my friend. Sorry but your home button looks gone. Anything sticky you had on your hands? Children?

Nothing sticky, no, but you're right that it could be a hardware thing. Since Samsung replaced the entire front plate (including the home button, soft buttons, volume and power buttons) it could be that. It doesn't explain the complete hangups either though ... I clocked the latest one at EIGHT MINUTES. That's how long the phone was hung up before deciding to restart on its own. Really strange. I might just get it replaced through T-mobile instead of engaging Samsung again.
An update: I took it to the T-mobile store for a check, and the rep there discovered that there was something like 1.5GB of data sitting in my cache (which somehow escaped clearing from two factory resets - access it by Settings > Storage > Internal Storage > Cache data). I also refrained from disabling any of the stock apps. It's been less than a day but so far the problems haven't resurfaced.
I proceed with cautious optimism.

No problem! Please keep us updated here if clearing the cache worked for you too. I want to make sure that the cache is the actual cause of the hang-ups. I still don't understand how it was unaffected even after two factory resets
Used to have reboot issues
I was wondering if you have the Samsung Good Lock installed?? I had it enabled for about 2 weeks and would get random reboots and the phone would become unresponsive. I tried everything to get rid of the problem but couldn't figure it out. Make a long story short, I unistalled Good Lock and no more reboots or issues. Worth a shot at least.
Also did you have saved fingerprints? I know on my Note 4 if you reset your phone when you had fingerprints setup that would cause issues because of how they are saved.

Bahaha! I had 4.3 GB. I was wondering why things seemed slow!
I do not have Good Lock installed, but I'll make sure to watch out for that one in the future.
I did have saved fingerprints, but they always got cleared after the factory reset. Besides, the problems existed before I decided to do the factory resets so maybe that isn't the issue.
4.3GB is high! But again I've been using the phone for just 3+ months (and only 1 month since I received it back from Samsung). We've all used phones for far longer than that without hte need to actively clear any cache. So I don't know, it still seems weird.
After 2 days since clearing the cache, the hang-ups seem to have stopped but I still noticed the home button being unresponsive a couple of times. It seems like they are separate issues, and I may still put in for a warranty replacement with T-mo for the home button issue if it persists.
Gah I don't know how to work multi-quote here sorry lol.
Final update: both problems are back in full swing. I even tried a 'hard reset' through recovery mode a couple of times and set my phone up as a new device (as opposed to restoring all my apps during setup). Stuck with stock everything, and did not disable any bloatware. Only apps I installed were Whatsapp, Inbox, and google Keyboard. Removed my SD card just in case. Still, both the problems highlighted in the first post continue to happen.
Based on the evidence I cannot see how this can be a software problem alone. Called in for a warranty replacement through T-mobile, which I should be receiving early next week.
Definitely a hardware problem.

Yea - kind of f*cked up that Samsung created a new problem for my phone while fixing the original issue (cracked screen). I specifically chose to send it to them and not a local store or even Staples (yup, they do repairs now lol) because I wanted to avoid complications ... smh.

I just got my replacement unit yesterday and it's been performing like a champ. I set it up as a new device to play it safe, but since then I've installed most of the apps that I use and have been able to disable all the bloatware without problems.
Pretty much confirms that there was a f*ck up with the screen repair on my original unit that ruined the home button functionality (and more, probably).
A note about those looking to do a warranty replacement through T-mobile: If you do not have insurance on the phone through them, they charge a $20 warranty service replacement fee AND a $20 shipping fee. Neither of these fees were revealed to me when I processed the replacement over the phone. Very under-handed on their part, especially because in that conversation with the T-mo rep I actually talked about how sending it back to Samsung was one of my options (for free, but they take 7-9 days to 'process' the replacement). Shameful on that rep's part.

4.3GB is high! But again I've been using the phone for just 3+ months (and only 1 month since I received it back from Samsung). We've all used phones for far longer than that without hte need to actively clear any cache. So I don't know, it still seems weird.
After 2 days since clearing the cache, the hang-ups seem to have stopped but I still noticed the home button being unresponsive a couple of times. It seems like they are separate issues, and I may still put in for a warranty replacement with T-mo for the home button issue if it persists.

The fingerprints are stored in a weird way. A factory reset does make it look like they are cleared, but for some reason if you don't manually clear them before you factory reset the phone develops a lag. I have no idea why, I just know it was an issue on the Note 4/5 so I am not surprised it is an issue on this device as well.

Oh that's really interesting - it's really a shame that Samsung doesn't sort these issues out. It's actually concerning to know that my fingerprint profile could be residually passed on with my device to a new owner because it didn't clear out with a factory reset like it was supposed to.

So my galaxy note 4 is having some serious problems for the last couple of days and it's really starting to bother me. I've tried doing everything I can find online so far but to no avail I've had no luck at all. Basically, my phone constantly keeps freezing and restarting. It will crash for quite a period of time then restart itself, crash and restart. It probably crashes and freezes about 80-90 times a day? More if I'm trying to use it of course (It also resets itself when not using it).
I've tried everything, bought a replacement (genuine) battery and not fixed it. Got to the point where I seen online about doing a factory reset so I backed everything up to my computer, started the factory reset and when I was going through the setup of logging into google and samsung account, it continues to crash and freeze all over again. (It crashed & restarted whilst retrieving my apps from google, thus I had to reinstall my apps again manually after I finally got it setup again).
To make matters worse, I cancelled the insurance cover last month and only a few days ago this started happening. I've not dropped the phone or damaged it in anyway, screen is completely perfect too. It just constantly crashes and restarts on it's own. Get a phone call and it crashes, using google maps, crash. It's beyond unusable now. I still have 4 months left of the contract before I'm due an upgrade and I really don't think it will last me that long.
Can someone PLEASE help? Suggestions would be so helpful!!!

Sounds like your battery is on its way out. Have you tried a new battery?

Earlier in the week I had an error I've not seen before. Phone restarted and went to black screen sort of looking at a recovery screen with android logo and in the centre of the screen was the message
"Kernal Panic" with some information on the top. This only has happened the one time and hasn't happened since. Took the battery out and restarted again...

Factory Reset isn't going to solve it anyway, its for tiny problems. Your system is somehow messed up badly.
Do what the above member said. Flash a stock ROM via Odin. But before that you need to completely wipe the phone. To completely wipe you need a custom recovery like TWRP. So flash it now, root the phone, then reboot into TWRP and use the Advanced Wipe section to wipe everything (external SD not needed), then reboot the phone in Download mode, and flash the latest stock ROM via Odin.
You are now part of a large group of us having the same issues. Several things have been tried. One thought is that the motherboard is faulty. Replacing it would be expensive. Download the app "wake lock" and set it to partial_wake_lock. Don't ask me why it works, but it does. Apparently the phone goes nuts when the screen tries to go off, the partial lock keeps it from crashing. That makes the phone usable, hopefully a permanent solution will become available. ;( The only time it goes nutty again is if the battery runs down and when I restart, the app is not running. Going back to the back and setting it to partial has allowed me to play games, etc for extended periods of time and no problems. It shouldn't be that way, and I really suspect the marshmallow update and then security update screwed it up, it was fine before that.

Which version is your note 4? verizon? att? tmobile? sprint? etc united states variant? other country? This helps find out if others that are having the same problem are on the same setup as you and more importantly tells me if I'm likely to have a problem with mine getting ready to come. :laugh:

80-90 times in one day is probably being generous. I've not actually counted how many times it restarts but If I need to use my phone I can guarantee it will be restarting a couple of times. Driving using navigation *Crashes* Inbound phone call *Crashes* get text message *crashes* all followed by the phone restarting. Practically unusable.

I'm gonna give this a go and hopefully it'll help! Thanks for the advice. Funnily enough, for a couple of months the phone has been prevented from the screen going off. I get a text or a notification and the screen would stay on until I hit the power button to turn it back off. Get a text in the middle of the night and I'd wake up to a boiling hot phone the next day, almost too hot to even keep in the hands. This literally frustrated me beyond belief and had to get a new battery and all sorts of complications. Also you mention the android update which made me think, I NEVER had this issue before I installed the security update for 6.0.1 - I put my money on something really stupid that's sincerely knackered my phone for certain!
While upgrading a phone, especially for major upgrades like from LP to MM, OTA method should always be avoided. You MUST do a clean flash of the ROM, otherwise you are bound to have problems. 80% of time people complain because they didn't flash the ROM cleanly, so whatever you want to do now, do it, but if it doesn't solve it (very likely it won't), then kindly flash the ROM via Odin after a full wipe. And if even that doesn't solve it then its hardware.

Thanks for letting me know your version. Hopefully it wont affect mine since mine is US Verizon. But out of curiosity have you checked for even the slightest sticky button? I've had phones where a button started to get tacky and would cause it to keep the screen on or go on and off like what you're saying. May not even feel like a sticky button. Do they all click very responsive? or do any feel like they have a dull thud experience?

The volume rocker and power button feel really loose but this isn't really something new. Something I have noticed is when I take the cover off the back, the battery barely stays in itself. If holding screen upwards and battery cover off then It doesn't hold the battery which made me possibly think that perhaps the battery does not situate properly and doesn't deliver enough power (or too much) but this was just one of my theories into why the hell my phone is acting this way.

Are you able to wedge a folded small piece of paper between the bottom edge of the battery and the phone to make the battery fit tighter? I mean it's not good to have a loose battery. But I can't see how that would cause the screen to stay on. If anything I would think it would cause the phone to shut off or reboot.

Let me know how it goes. There are other threads about same issue. Most of us have tried reflashing, wiping everything, custom roms, going back to stock, trying to downgrade, taking out the sim card, taking out the sd card, not having both in at same time, brand new battery, I think even putting the battery in the freezer momentarily, etc. etc. Nobody seems to have had any real luck with it, except those who were under warranty and got a new phone, or are capable and wiling to exchange some hardware. I just find it odd that it happened all of a sudden after updates and recently to many people.. Still, I keep coming here hoping someone will have great news. Mine started with marshmallow, but definitely got worse with the security update.

Aside from the previously proposed wake lock solution, members in the T-Mobile Note 4 threads have experienced limited success with a downgrade to LP from MM.
From my reading, these issues seem to be common across all Snapdragon models, not to say it Exynos is excluded (I don't frequent Exynos threads).

I tried that and it didn't work for me. The only surefire solution is a replacement device, but even then there's no guarantee the device won't start acting up in the future.

this is the issue I'm getting...I did a complete data wipe using twrp...now stuck on this screen...cant even push files...device not recognized in adb or fastboot mode....

Well a new motherboard was the only thing that fixed it for me, replaced under the 2 year warranty but I had to wait a while for parts. What is interesting is that the phone is much faster, the battery life much better than when it was new. Also it now barely gets warm using google maps - before it got quite hot. It would be very interesting to find out what percentage of Note 4's have been going down with is problem - mine was a fairly early one - was Samsung rushing to beat Apple two years ago and a bad batch of parts used? I don't know -we need some answers on what is the problem to be sure.
Just a personal experience and thus advice, please don't keep flashing bunch of stuffs every other day. The more your eMMC gets used more chance of your phone getting messed up. This is how my Note 3 died, kept flashing this and that, and did the same on Note 4 too, but have now stopped. I don't know whether there's an endurance rating on these eMMCs used or not but this is what I think, I could be wrong, please quote me in that case.

Wow, that sounds promising. I'm sending mine for replacement, and although I'm not getting a new MB installed, hopefully the incoming unit will be similar in performance to yours.

Your reasoning sounds plausible, but my phone suffered similar issues and I only flashed my unit 2-3 times in the 14 months I had it.
