Over the past week or so, I've noticed a couple of really concerning problems with my T-mo Galaxy S7 edge:
The home button stops responding while the rest of the phone functions normally. (https://youtu.be/CEj1CrRbdkI)
The phone entirely hangs up for a significant period of time (1 min - 5 mins) and doesn't respond to any buttons or input, sometimes leading to a restart (https://youtu.be/wuo1Ngc9bqE, https://youtu.be/UXwIPle5rHw)
These problems happen completely randomly - whether I'm at home, work, on a train, it doesn't matter. The app or screen that I'm on doesn't matter as well. The videos I captured were just examples from today, after a fresh factory reset. I'm not sure what else to do at this point. Any suggestions?
Edit: I should also add that I recently sent in my phone to Samsung for a screen replacement (which involves swapping out the entire front plate). I wonder if they messed something up on the hardware side ...
That defenetly looks like it could be a hardware defect my friend. Sorry but your home button looks gone. Anything sticky you had on your hands? Children?

Nothing sticky, no, but you're right that it could be a hardware thing. Since Samsung replaced the entire front plate (including the home button, soft buttons, volume and power buttons) it could be that. It doesn't explain the complete hangups either though ... I clocked the latest one at EIGHT MINUTES. That's how long the phone was hung up before deciding to restart on its own. Really strange. I might just get it replaced through T-mobile instead of engaging Samsung again.
An update: I took it to the T-mobile store for a check, and the rep there discovered that there was something like 1.5GB of data sitting in my cache (which somehow escaped clearing from two factory resets - access it by Settings > Storage > Internal Storage > Cache data). I also refrained from disabling any of the stock apps. It's been less than a day but so far the problems haven't resurfaced.
I proceed with cautious optimism.

No problem! Please keep us updated here if clearing the cache worked for you too. I want to make sure that the cache is the actual cause of the hang-ups. I still don't understand how it was unaffected even after two factory resets
Used to have reboot issues
I was wondering if you have the Samsung Good Lock installed?? I had it enabled for about 2 weeks and would get random reboots and the phone would become unresponsive. I tried everything to get rid of the problem but couldn't figure it out. Make a long story short, I unistalled Good Lock and no more reboots or issues. Worth a shot at least.
Also did you have saved fingerprints? I know on my Note 4 if you reset your phone when you had fingerprints setup that would cause issues because of how they are saved.

Bahaha! I had 4.3 GB. I was wondering why things seemed slow!
I do not have Good Lock installed, but I'll make sure to watch out for that one in the future.
I did have saved fingerprints, but they always got cleared after the factory reset. Besides, the problems existed before I decided to do the factory resets so maybe that isn't the issue.
4.3GB is high! But again I've been using the phone for just 3+ months (and only 1 month since I received it back from Samsung). We've all used phones for far longer than that without hte need to actively clear any cache. So I don't know, it still seems weird.
After 2 days since clearing the cache, the hang-ups seem to have stopped but I still noticed the home button being unresponsive a couple of times. It seems like they are separate issues, and I may still put in for a warranty replacement with T-mo for the home button issue if it persists.

Final update: both problems are back in full swing. I even tried a 'hard reset' through recovery mode a couple of times and set my phone up as a new device (as opposed to restoring all my apps during setup). Stuck with stock everything, and did not disable any bloatware. Only apps I installed were Whatsapp, Inbox, and google Keyboard. Removed my SD card just in case. Still, both the problems highlighted in the first post continue to happen.
Based on the evidence I cannot see how this can be a software problem alone. Called in for a warranty replacement through T-mobile, which I should be receiving early next week.
Definitely a hardware problem.

Yea - kind of f*cked up that Samsung created a new problem for my phone while fixing the original issue (cracked screen). I specifically chose to send it to them and not a local store or even Staples (yup, they do repairs now lol) because I wanted to avoid complications ... smh.

I just got my replacement unit yesterday and it's been performing like a champ. I set it up as a new device to play it safe, but since then I've installed most of the apps that I use and have been able to disable all the bloatware without problems.
Pretty much confirms that there was a f*ck up with the screen repair on my original unit that ruined the home button functionality (and more, probably).
A note about those looking to do a warranty replacement through T-mobile: If you do not have insurance on the phone through them, they charge a $20 warranty service replacement fee AND a $20 shipping fee. Neither of these fees were revealed to me when I processed the replacement over the phone. Very under-handed on their part, especially because in that conversation with the T-mo rep I actually talked about how sending it back to Samsung was one of my options (for free, but they take 7-9 days to 'process' the replacement). Shameful on that rep's part.

The fingerprints are stored in a weird way. A factory reset does make it look like they are cleared, but for some reason if you don't manually clear them before you factory reset the phone develops a lag. I have no idea why, I just know it was an issue on the Note 4/5 so I am not surprised it is an issue on this device as well.

Oh that's really interesting - it's really a shame that Samsung doesn't sort these issues out. It's actually concerning to know that my fingerprint profile could be residually passed on with my device to a new owner because it didn't clear out with a factory reset like it was supposed to.

The basics of the problem are that the lock button seems to lock the screen but once pressed again it shows whatever was on the screen before, not the lock screen!? Holding the lock button does not come up with the turn off/reset options.
Another odd thing that happens along with this is that any application that is opened or closed the screen flashes black before opening up.
Along with this I have found that the alot of the native apps, including phone, contacts and most annoyingly, CLOCK, crash also. Making me late for work and rendering the phone useless unless I do a battery pull.
I will note that the most odd thing is that I contacted our business contract guy who who i expected to tell me to do a soft reset, told me that the supplier would swap out the phone?! That was last week and the new handset is showing early signs of the same thing.
Neither phones are rooted and I have not installed any unknown sources on the new handset to be sure it wasnt an outside source?!

if not solve ur problems, try Odin flash tools to flash another stock ROM
if not work take to service cause it should be hardware problem.

Do you think I should remove as many as possible and try then?

I am having this same exact issue. First happened when I installed a SanDisk Ultra CLASS 10. I thought the card was causing me compatibility issues so I returned it to amazon. This was just a few days ago. The only thing that worked to fix this issue was to remove the battery.
On the way to work today I suddenly couldn't play any music downloaded from Google music to my device. However, I could stream music that was not downloaded to my device. I also couldn't view any pictures in my picture gallery. I tried rebooting the phone and guess what -- I got the same exact issue as the original post above.
I wasn't going to mess with my phone while driving so I made up my mind that I was going to return it to verizon tomorrow. About an hour into work I picked up my phone and it gave me the onscreen instructions to swipe up to get flip board -- same instructions it gives you after a reboot. I then tried playing the same music that wouldn't play before and it played. I tried viewing pictures in the gallery that were inviewable before and they were now viewable.
I'd like to know what is going on too. I can't just give up to the fact that my phone doesn't want to work at certain times of the day so I just have to give it an hour.

The best thing would be to remove all non-factory apps. But yes, start by removing as many of them as possible.
(If that doesn't work, do a factory reset and cache wipe through the recovery menu, and don't restore a single app. (I'm not talking abouy the bloatware, we all have those.))
If there are no problems at that point, add back your apps one by one. (no restoring anything, make sure they are clean installs.)
Eventually you should run into whatever app is causing the issue.

I reset the system to factory settings and started arranging only the installed apps and widgets and I got the same lock screen issues.
This time the phone wouldn't go to the lock screen but it would give me the option to restart or shut down. I set it aside again and when I picked it up a few later it showed me the home screen wwith instructions on how to access flipboard -- as if it was reset! I have a warranty on mine so I'm gonna return it to verizon tomorrow or friday.
I received my 32G model on Nov 28. Firmware MDA89D. Pure stock unmodified in any way. Not even using screen protection or cases. Setup as a new device, not copy from another existing device. I've been getting randon freezes and crashes. When it froze, it did not respond to any touch input or any key input. The only way to get back is to hold down the power button to do a force reboot. It seemed to have settled over the last few days. What I do have on an ongoing basis is crashes. When I use Google map navigation, the phone will work for a few minutes and the screen went black followed by a reboot. It did it on 2 consecutive days already.
Is it just me having this problem therefore a defective unit or is it the OS / Software problem.

That is strange...I haven't had that kind of behavior on my Nexus 6-works without a problem-never freezes or reboots...now I know the Amazon app would do something to my Nexus 6 I don't know what but when I install it-my phone with reboot randomly or shut down...ever since I uninstalled it-no issues-for months.

You can always try a factory reset as well....have you tried updating to the most recent factory image from Google?

I've been experiencing the black screen freeze frequently since getting the phone only a couple days ago. No other lockups however. Also running pure stock.

Same. Interestingly, in my case, it seemed to happen most frequently when using Hangouts.
I have another post that describes random reboot and I believe they are related. Long story short. I believe either the factory reset + software update fixed it, or it's a hardware problem problem. While I wait for the replacement, I only had one random reboot. Of course the new phone is rock solid. It's only been a couple of days. I would have a few by now if I'm still on original phone _ original firmware.

What I'm trying to say is don't panic and RMA your device. Do a factory reset and make sure you're on the latest firmware. Mine was OK after the first self-reboot during setup after factory reset but has been good while waiting for the RMA to arrive. To answer your question, the new device has been perfect but it's only been 48 hours.

Yup same stuff going on over here with mine. It locks up and reboots even after clearing cache and rebooting only a few hours earlier. Have done 2 factory resets and am on the latest OTA update. I also noticed that I have to clear the cached data every day, sometimes multiple times a day to keep device running smoothly. This really concerns me with a device that's less than 2 weeks old. I also have only a handful of basic apps( Fb, YouTube, Spotify). Really thinking about returning it. When the phone runs right its great, but all the issues make me nervous. Might be time for a Note 5? I am just getting used to this phone and would hate to leave it though. Interested to see if the first major marshmallow update fixes these problems.

Mine actually had one random freeze and reboot after factory reset then nothing for 48 hours after that. Of course I rma'd mine and I'm glad I did. Screen is on the colder side with even volume speakers on the second unit. Sending my original one back.

I'm just about ready to RMA. I've tried factory resets, cache wipes and just recently updated to the latest stock MDB08M. It was fine for a day or two but now the lockups are increasing.
As others have said, by any other metric this is one of the best phones I've had. This freeze/reboot thing is getting annoying and even if it isn't happening to every user it's happening to enough to be of some concern.
I'm facing app closures, my gmail app keeps crashing, it happened on my graphite nexus 6p, and now same thing on my frosty 6p. Its not just gmail, it's also chrome now. Maybe i should have not restored from my previous device.

So my galaxy note 4 is having some serious problems for the last couple of days and it's really starting to bother me. I've tried doing everything I can find online so far but to no avail I've had no luck at all. Basically, my phone constantly keeps freezing and restarting. It will crash for quite a period of time then restart itself, crash and restart. It probably crashes and freezes about 80-90 times a day? More if I'm trying to use it of course (It also resets itself when not using it).
I've tried everything, bought a replacement (genuine) battery and not fixed it. Got to the point where I seen online about doing a factory reset so I backed everything up to my computer, started the factory reset and when I was going through the setup of logging into google and samsung account, it continues to crash and freeze all over again. (It crashed & restarted whilst retrieving my apps from google, thus I had to reinstall my apps again manually after I finally got it setup again).
To make matters worse, I cancelled the insurance cover last month and only a few days ago this started happening. I've not dropped the phone or damaged it in anyway, screen is completely perfect too. It just constantly crashes and restarts on it's own. Get a phone call and it crashes, using google maps, crash. It's beyond unusable now. I still have 4 months left of the contract before I'm due an upgrade and I really don't think it will last me that long.
Can someone PLEASE help? Suggestions would be so helpful!!!

Earlier in the week I had an error I've not seen before. Phone restarted and went to black screen sort of looking at a recovery screen with android logo and in the centre of the screen was the message
"Kernal Panic" with some information on the top. This only has happened the one time and hasn't happened since. Took the battery out and restarted again...

Factory Reset isn't going to solve it anyway, its for tiny problems. Your system is somehow messed up badly.
Do what the above member said. Flash a stock ROM via Odin. But before that you need to completely wipe the phone. To completely wipe you need a custom recovery like TWRP. So flash it now, root the phone, then reboot into TWRP and use the Advanced Wipe section to wipe everything (external SD not needed), then reboot the phone in Download mode, and flash the latest stock ROM via Odin.
You are now part of a large group of us having the same issues. Several things have been tried. One thought is that the motherboard is faulty. Replacing it would be expensive. Download the app "wake lock" and set it to partial_wake_lock. Don't ask me why it works, but it does. Apparently the phone goes nuts when the screen tries to go off, the partial lock keeps it from crashing. That makes the phone usable, hopefully a permanent solution will become available. ;( The only time it goes nutty again is if the battery runs down and when I restart, the app is not running. Going back to the back and setting it to partial has allowed me to play games, etc for extended periods of time and no problems. It shouldn't be that way, and I really suspect the marshmallow update and then security update screwed it up, it was fine before that.

Which version is your note 4? verizon? att? tmobile? sprint? etc united states variant? other country? This helps find out if others that are having the same problem are on the same setup as you and more importantly tells me if I'm likely to have a problem with mine getting ready to come. :laugh:

Factory Reset isn't going to solve it anyway, its for tiny problems. Your system is somehow messed up badly.
Do what the above member said. Flash a stock ROM via Odin. But before that you need to completely wipe the phone. To completely wipe you need a custom recovery like TWRP. So flash it now, root the phone, then reboot into TWRP and use the Advanced Wipe section to wipe everything (external SD not needed), then reboot the phone in Download mode, and flash the latest stock ROM via Odin.

80-90 times in one day is probably being generous. I've not actually counted how many times it restarts but If I need to use my phone I can guarantee it will be restarting a couple of times. Driving using navigation *Crashes* Inbound phone call *Crashes* get text message *crashes* all followed by the phone restarting. Practically unusable.

While upgrading a phone, especially for major upgrades like from LP to MM, OTA method should always be avoided. You MUST do a clean flash of the ROM, otherwise you are bound to have problems. 80% of time people complain because they didn't flash the ROM cleanly, so whatever you want to do now, do it, but if it doesn't solve it (very likely it won't), then kindly flash the ROM via Odin after a full wipe. And if even that doesn't solve it then its hardware.

Thanks for letting me know your version. Hopefully it wont affect mine since mine is US Verizon. But out of curiosity have you checked for even the slightest sticky button? I've had phones where a button started to get tacky and would cause it to keep the screen on or go on and off like what you're saying. May not even feel like a sticky button. Do they all click very responsive? or do any feel like they have a dull thud experience?

The volume rocker and power button feel really loose but this isn't really something new. Something I have noticed is when I take the cover off the back, the battery barely stays in itself. If holding screen upwards and battery cover off then It doesn't hold the battery which made me possibly think that perhaps the battery does not situate properly and doesn't deliver enough power (or too much) but this was just one of my theories into why the hell my phone is acting this way.

Are you able to wedge a folded small piece of paper between the bottom edge of the battery and the phone to make the battery fit tighter? I mean it's not good to have a loose battery. But I can't see how that would cause the screen to stay on. If anything I would think it would cause the phone to shut off or reboot.

Let me know how it goes. There are other threads about same issue. Most of us have tried reflashing, wiping everything, custom roms, going back to stock, trying to downgrade, taking out the sim card, taking out the sd card, not having both in at same time, brand new battery, I think even putting the battery in the freezer momentarily, etc. etc. Nobody seems to have had any real luck with it, except those who were under warranty and got a new phone, or are capable and wiling to exchange some hardware. I just find it odd that it happened all of a sudden after updates and recently to many people.. Still, I keep coming here hoping someone will have great news. Mine started with marshmallow, but definitely got worse with the security update.

why don't you reflash you device with supported PIT file and stock F.W ?

I still have 4 months left of the contract before I'm due an upgrade and I really don't think it will last me that long.
Can someone PLEASE help? Suggestions would be so helpful!!!

Aside from the previously proposed wake lock solution, members in the T-Mobile Note 4 threads have experienced limited success with a downgrade to LP from MM.
From my reading, these issues seem to be common across all Snapdragon models, not to say it Exynos is excluded (I don't frequent Exynos threads).

I tried that and it didn't work for me. The only surefire solution is a replacement device, but even then there's no guarantee the device won't start acting up in the future.

Well a new motherboard was the only thing that fixed it for me, replaced under the 2 year warranty but I had to wait a while for parts. What is interesting is that the phone is much faster, the battery life much better than when it was new. Also it now barely gets warm using google maps - before it got quite hot. It would be very interesting to find out what percentage of Note 4's have been going down with is problem - mine was a fairly early one - was Samsung rushing to beat Apple two years ago and a bad batch of parts used? I don't know -we need some answers on what is the problem to be sure.
Just a personal experience and thus advice, please don't keep flashing bunch of stuffs every other day. The more your eMMC gets used more chance of your phone getting messed up. This is how my Note 3 died, kept flashing this and that, and did the same on Note 4 too, but have now stopped. I don't know whether there's an endurance rating on these eMMCs used or not but this is what I think, I could be wrong, please quote me in that case.

Wow, that sounds promising. I'm sending mine for replacement, and although I'm not getting a new MB installed, hopefully the incoming unit will be similar in performance to yours.

Your reasoning sounds plausible, but my phone suffered similar issues and I only flashed my unit 2-3 times in the 14 months I had it.
On 10/17/16 I took the OTA to take me from the July Security patch to the September security patch, with build number G935TUVU4APIA.
With in the first day of the update I experienced the phone freezing on the home screen, then rebooting. Later on I found it had rebooted while in my pocket (prompted for pin and system up time was minutes). Ever since over past 6 days it has become frozen and rebooted multiple times a day. Anywhere 2 to 5 times a day doing various different things.
I have tried clearing all system and app cache since after the update. Unfortantely that has not helped at all. So what I would like to know is anyone else on this build experiencing these reboots, or was before and fixed it?
I'm trying to determine if its a bug with this build, cause I will be really annoyed if I have to go through the trouble of a factory reset, then find out it didn't help cause its an issue with this specific build. If some other stock people can confirm this build is not rebooting for them I will give factory reset a try.

Idon't have this build installed yet but the previous one and had the same issue, turned out to be my alarm clock plus app causing it to reboot on an alarm.

Dang that sucks, worse time for it to fail when its supposed to wake you up lol! Thanks or the suggestion but I don't think its app related since it happens on home screen, in app drawer, in chrome, and in my pocket with screen off. Unless its an app in the back ground. But I haven't installed any new in past 5 days apps that I would say are uncommon that aren't supported well.
Edit: I just checked. Since the OTA I did install 1 app the day after. The Nexia app for smart thermostat that came with my new furnace. I don't think thats it since I can recall at least 1 reboot after the OTA and before that app. But just in case I will uninstall that app for a couple days just to test. Thanks!

I use I cant wake up alarm clock and experience that too. I am rooted but still keep the alarm clock because it rearms on reboot and still works. so no biggie for me

I had a serious freeze/lock up last night. I am on the same build and NOT rooted. I even tried holding down the power button and the phone was unresponsive. Cap. keys stayed lit the whole time. After holding down for 45 sec or so it finally relented and rebooted. But this combined with random heat surges/ups really have me pissed.
Had the same issue. On u firmware now cuz i couldnt take it. One thing that seemed to help some was removing the sd card and wiping cache then rebooting. I let it run for a few hours then put in sd card. Seemed to help alot
I'm back to follow up with the results from uninstalling the only app I installed since the update. It actually almost went 24 hours without a freeze and reboot. I was starting to think it actually was the culprit. But then I had 2 freezes and reboot today. ��
So I have switched back to my Nexus 6P for a while. Thanks to those who also reported the same issue! Since other people are reporting the same issue it seems to be a bug in this build unfortunately. So here is to Samsung pushing out a fix soon. Until then I will be using my 6P. If they haven't fixed it in a couple weeks then I will probably flash to the U firmware too. What variant is the U firmware from anyways? The unlocked North America variant?
I installed the update and have been running it for the past four days with no problems to report thus far. If I get a reboot or any freezing I'll let you folks know. Perhaps try a factory reset.

I get a reboot twice a day. Sometimes the phone will freeze while I'm scrolling through my internet browser or it will reboot if I'm using the SAMSUNG branded car charger and Google Maps at the same time. Other times it'll just randomly reboot out of nowhere.
This is extremely frustrating. T-Mobile recommended that I get an exchange and I did get an exchange and the same day it rebooted on me. I called complaining that it's not a hardware issue and they told me to exchange the phone again. Smh.
This sucks especially since I use GPS a lot. This phone was/is perfect before the update.

Yeah... Carriers need to train their employees to be able to know how to tell the difference between a hardware and software issue. For example if a user reports something didn't happen until a recent update, then that should be an automatic sign to not waste that customers time with a pointless exchange.
This is really starting to get on my nerves now. Ever since I got my new S10+ from AT&T, it's occasionally done this thing where after I reboot the phone, I unlock it, and it briefly says "starting phone" on the home screen, and then will mysteriously do a quick reset, where it skips the AT&T logo and jingle, and just shows the Samsung splash screen , then takes me back to the lockscreen and it's usually fine after that.
However, Just now I decided to reset my phone, like one should do periodically, and it did the strange double reset after unlocking... Then when I unlocked it, after the "starting phone" message I tried to open a browser, and BAM! Quick reset again! Unlocked, let it start up, tried to open an app, BAM quick reset again after the screen briefly shifted from landscape to portrait mode (even though I was still holding it long ways in landscape position). Its never done this before and I'm getting concerned. It's never randomly reset while using the phone, this only happens right after a reset.
Any ideas? I've already tried wiping partition cache after big updates, doing soft resets. I'm worried that I'm going to have to end up resorting to a factory wipe, as others suggested I do when I was having battery drain issues on the ASD3 firmware, possibly because of restoring everything from a backup of my last phone when I got this one. Because supposedly restoring from backups from AT&T, Google or Samsung has caused all sorts of problems for people. I really don't want go wipe everything and spend hours try to get it all back on here manually if i don't have to.

Had an issue with this early on but seems to have been fixed at some point, I'm I'm exynos though so probably not much help!

Dang... So it does appear to be an issue experienced on both Exynos and Snapdragon variants. I wonder if there is or will be a fix for this. I've been asking around and haven't gotten many responses about this problem at all. I'm concerned because it seems to be getting worse than when I first got the phone.
I'm having the exact same problem. Sometimes it goes through quick reset, full reset, a couple more quick, then back to the Verizon logo, then starts up. Opening an app at that point usually does another quick, then full, then everything works. Glad I'm not the only one, but I haven't found any solutions either.

Mine does the same. Unlocked bought directly from Samsung. I don't reboot the phone very often so it doesn't bother me that much.
