There are 2-3 weeks before all the major tablets launch and I am considering buying the tab. I want a 7 inch so if i wait ill go for the flyer. But I was wondering if it is still worth paying $600 for the device. The new tablets will launch for $1000-120o so please advice me as to whether I should get the tab or wait ?
Just to add I currently have an HD7 as my primary phone and have been using the Desire HD as my backup phone and I will sell the desire hd to buy the galaxy tab. Plz consider this when advising. Thanks
Well, in the computer world there is always something coming around the corner that is better, faster and/or cheaper. That's just the nature of technology.
But, the Galaxy tab is great for me. I bought mine when they first became available in the states for $550 off contract. You can find them now for $500 off contract. To me the 7" size is a better choice then the 10" that most of the new hot tabs have. 7" is better for holding in your hand for ebook reading. The SGT is about half the weight of the iPad and Xoom which makes a huge difference.
The Galaxy tab has flash video for web but the iPad and Xoom do not.
From an ease of use and slickness the SGT runs behind the iPad but ahead of Honeycomb tablets like Xoom (read the Xoom reviews; people like the look of Honeycomb but they admit that it is not as easy to use as android 2.2).
If you are hooked on the 7" size like I am then you might consider the Dell Streak 7 which adds 4g to the mix.
As far as which provider to go with, I think one of the GSM providers (ATT or TMobile) would be better than the CDMA providers (Sprint or Verizon) as the CDMA tabs seem more locked down and have less development going on.
I would wait at this point - Samsung is suppose to be coming out with 8" Honeycomb tablet this summer.
If you can find one used or on sale
at a great price its fine for web browsing and email
and it's the only 7" capable phone out too, if you don't mind flashing it.
Just dont let anyone see you using it as a phone
Sorry is costing me $600 slight typo
Even though I returned my Tab, I'd still heartily recommend one to people looking for a great Tablet.
For me, it was TMobile winding me up that made my decision for me.
Awesome device, carriers did their best to make it fail it appears.
But some 10buck data plans? And the price it's going for atm? Well worth it I'd say. Seems everyone's pushing now for larger than 7inch devices, but the form factor is perfect. It's still luggable around (pocket requirements, but it's doable). Great screen, VERY decent sound compared to other tablets.
Sure, there's 3.0 tablets, but... Don't know. I think the Tab running 2.2 should be renamed 'Tab Classic' It's still very good, no matter what else comes after it.
I think now $500 new off contract and $400 used would be a nicer price?
No reason to rush into a Galaxy Tab with so many options coming unless its a good deal,
except maybe since it has a phone, I'd bet it will be the last 7"+ device with one.
YES
I just bought mine a week ago....luv it gave my ipad to my girlfriend ...I didnt realize how much i missed flash...7 inch is perfect for e reading ...portability is better ....10 inch to me is rather wide not easy to handle....
I have had the Tab for about a month and love it. I played with the iPad regularly since my girlfriend has one, but I consistantly came away with the Tab over iPad for 4 main reasons:
1- I much prefer 7" to 10" inch for mobility, one hand holding, ability to put in a pocket, etc.
2- I had a jailbroken iPhone and got rid of it when the original Droid came out. I still have a DroidX as my main phone due to the fact that I much prefer Android to Apple for the interface, customization, and app selection. Yes, iTunes has many apps and iPad has many tablet apps, but from experience, I found that many apps were 57 versions of the same thing, just with a different sports team branding or something, and I have yet to be unable to find a good Android app for any of my needs.
3- Even compared to another Android tablet like the Xoom, the ease of typing on a Tab is great. Granted, I have larger hands than most, but I can thumb type in portrait or landscape at about 35 words per minute, not too far behind my keyboard speed.
4- Last but not least, I use my Tab for everything. AllShare lets me use it as a remote to stream from the computer to the tv, with a cardock it is essentially a carputer, I can edit documents on a small device without carrying a laptop, and with it is great for showing off pictures and things better than a phone. That is only the tip of the iceberg.
I am sure if I put further thought into it, I would come up with alot more and this is a long post already, but something else the Tab has done for me that I really enjoy is that I enjoy it so much, I have gone from a lurker to a poster on many Android forums, including starting out here on XDA.
Forgot to mention price
Sorry, forgot to mention your concern about price. I got a brand new T-Mobile Tab (researching on XDA I found GSM had more dev work being done) on eBay for $425, so only $100 more than a Nook Color with the protection plan, which is what I had before the Tab and returned it after a week.

I have the phone enabled on my Tab and I use it all the time. I bought the tab without a contract and flashed it with the JMI rom and a modem.
If you buy a device that is capable of voice communication and you use it that way why should you be wary of someone seeing you use it that way?
The device is FCC legal, has a prepaid sim card and is running a legal operating system.
There is nothing wrong with using a device in a way it was designed to be used as long as you pay for it.

Motorola is getting an hint of respect from me... The less Flash (and Air) the better.
Anyway the tab is really awesome to watch videos, can decode with no trouble 1080p at over 40mbps... Plus i'd say this form factor is the best one. And it works as a phone.

get one! the portability is awesome. 10" screen is too big to carry around. at least for me.
Got the tab and am loving it !!!

The Tab is currently the least worst 7" Android tablet out there. I love it. Now priced at where it should be (here in UK at least). Pop in a 3GB sim card (9 quid on amazon) and it's the perfect always online mobile device. It'll be interesting to see other 7" or so devices hit the market soon. That's what I would be comparing it against.
The 10" ones are not mobile enough due to size and weight (I use a car dock with the Tab - can't do that with a 10" without infringing on some local law ). I'm also a bit wary of how the Tegra 2 chipset found in most of them is performing. Video especially seems a bit of a letdown. At least we'll all soon have a lot of choices in formats and features. Still early days...
My one concern is that we may not see Honeycomb on the Tab. I suspect Samsung will skip over it for the Gingerbread V2/Ice Cream (depending on rumours) OS which brings in Honeycomb features for smartphones. The Tab has physical buttons and Honeycomb would seem wrong with that. Of course, knowing Samsung we may see nothing at all....
Yes I am still happy with my tab.
I would have suggested an version #2 if it was 7 inch with better camera and SuperAmoled screen.
Will sell mine only if next version includes all that features without losing batery life.
Yes if you desire portability. Personally I love my tab,now my dad wants one too so I think I'm going to give him mine as soon as I get the replacement back from Samsung(tab stopped turning one, dead battery I'm guessing). I'm gonna get the iPad 2 since I already have the Evo, which I use on the go and I miss iOS adventure games
So I'm trying to find a new tab. One that stands above the rest! This is turning out to be a real battle!! So what do I "settle" for?
Galaxy Tab 10.1 - Sexy and Thin; but no ports, so limited in actual practicality. And Honeycomb is skinned (skin = gross).
Transformer - Seems to be the leader, but no USB port on the tab! Whaa? ya! Why remove functionality to force a purchase of an additional kb???
Xoom - had it, returned it, needs better screen and to be lighter.
iPad2 - ummm, no thank you.
Acer Iconia - feels/looks cheap and is skinned! (skin = gross).
Sooo... wth? Where do I go from here? I have 800 bucks burning a hold in my pocket from returning the Xoom and accessories. Do I "really" have to wait until the fall or even Xmas to see anything that has both sex appeal AND a complete list of ports and functionality?
Did I miss a tab in the shuffle? Is there actually one that has the 3 ports I want (USB, HDMI, SD) + isn't brick heavy? And of course gimme a vanilla version of Honeycomb 3.1 without trashing it with a skin!!
Signed, frustrated (w/money)
Did you try the Playbook? And what's wrong with galaxy tab (any size) its awesome?!
Why can we just accept the fact that companies will not build an all in one tablet with everything we want hahaha be happy with tab, xoom ipad or acer etc if u want buy them all
I don't have a Blackberry, so for me the Playbook would be pointless, and it's not "my" target size.
Yes, the GT "would" be awsome if Samsung left the OS alone, and possibly tried to improve on the iPad2 form factor, instead of match it.... and add on some practical ports! I realize that it was likely to keep it thin and light, but there must be an alternative, it just sucks I have to wait for it.
@vetchen - why do I have to accept that I need to buy 3 different tabs to be able to get all the functionality? Obviously it's possible to the put all the same functionality into 1 tab. It just amazes me that it hasn't been done yet!
I can guarantee you that all 4 of the non-Apple companies above KNOW what consumers want! Why can't they just create it already! Transformer came SO close! But wanted that extra $150, so removed the most functional port on their tab!
Thanks for the words boyz, and hear you - but just don't like to "settle", at this price point... and am an insanely impatient person!
Most all the time the manufacturers will release what they think is saleable to the most people at a price point that allow the best possible margin rather than to make what is possible with the best possible tech because maybe to expensive, to heavy, big, too niche or whatever...
What consumers want is dictated by marketing more than you think, someone make a good advert telling you that you need a touch device without copy and paste because its MAGIC and you get a load of zombies waiting for two weeks at your shop door.
At the end of the day its like purchasing a house
Bill Gates can afford to buy a bespoke tablet/house made to his specs if he want
Most people buy what is available and compromise
some handy people buy houses/devices looking at its possibilities and develop repair it themselves to achieve what they want from it
Is it not the reason why we are here in the first place? to get from a device more to our taste than what the manufacturer intended in the first place?

Mick Jagger would say : you can't always get what you want.
Seriously, the galaxy tab 10.1 looks good but you'll have to wait. And about the touchwiz ui, we'll eventualy have a vanilla honeycomb like the google io special edition, thanks to the devs of xda.

It depeands for what you are going to use it. I am not playing games on tab (except chess with friends), mostly surfing web, email and reading books and pdfs, so galaxy tab is perfect for me couse of its size and its light.
If you want it for HD games, than it looks like tegra2 is must now. If you need all ports, then transformer with kb looks like a great choice for you.
If you don't want to buy kb, then you could wait for toshiba tablet, it has all ports that you want.
obviously I "am" asking too much!
Sounds about right!

@PBL: If what your saying is true, different manufacturers "research" into target markets (of course!) can't be that skewed from one company to the next. I'm sure there are lots of variables at play, so most of this is all devil's advocate - I get that!
But I'm sure that Samsung knows that most users want ports (however "mini" they have to make 'em), that's why they put them in their latest and greatest phones, and 7" tab! Making a device scaleable is a no brainer, and lets not pretend Samsung was naive of that fact when they built the Galaxy 10.1. But yes, forgive me if I want my Galaxy un-skinned and to squeeze some micro-ports in there
"Saleable" as you say, especially considering all these devices are at the same price point, "I" (as a manufacturer) would want "all" of the options on my iDevice that I'm realeasing, because regardless what folks are doing with it. MOST (from my company's targeted research) would want to plug a thumb drive in there, and most want great graphics.... unless I'm just totally clueless! (that was rhetorical).
I don't have to be a developer to want a USB port, and I don't have to be a gamer to want beautiful graphics and no skin! Not to mention I "am" the average Joe user! And considering how "open" and customizable all of this is foundationed on, I should have the option of removing or "uninstalling" my skin.
Considering JK Shin (prez Samsung Mobile) says that they made the Galaxy 10.1 to be used for every "kind" of user, I am just disapointed that it wasn't designed for me!
Most all the time the manufacturers will release what they think is saleable to the most people at a price point that allow the best possible margin rather than to make what is possible with the best possible tech because maybe to expensive, to heavy, big, too niche or whatever...

The answer to this question is:
"In my mind and in your mind"
Such a tablet does not exist in reality at this moment.
You will have to let that $800 burn in your pocket for many more months to come.
While you are waiting, I will be playing with my 3G T-mobile Galaxy Tab, my 3G Xoom, my ipad, and my 64 GB Playbook.
Since there is no 1 tablet to rule them all, I have the financial capability to buy all 4 of the tablets that I mentioned and enjoy it according to the situation. Each one of them has part features of that "still none existing" 1 tablet to rule them all.
Well I guess if I had 2k to spend on tabs, I'd be happy man - who knew I'd have to own 4 tabs to be productive!

If you had to give up the others and have only one, which would you keep?
To the op, just get an iPad, you seem like that kinda guy.
Or wait until a Kal-EL 7inch tab that's thinner than the Sammy 8.9 and has a samoled screen comes out, that will be the tab to rule them all
One tab to rule them all?
My Galaxy tab 7' has 2.3.3 1.4ghz cpu speed, tegra2 compatable, with smartass for sweet cpu regulation. Soon to have 3.1
Luv this thing. Seems to be able to do almost ANYTHING!
Now if I could just solder a kal-el tegra3 quad core mobile processor in there, i would be set!

At this moment in time, I would probably keep the 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Reasons:
1. It has Overcome Gingerbread RC1 ROM and can overclock to 1.4 ghz (simulate the Flyer)
2. It has CoPilot Live (can simulate a good stand alone portable GPS)
3. It has 7" screen (is very portable, and simulate the Flyer and the Playbook)
4. It has great video playback of high-profile h.264 and a great bright screen (can simulate the Playbook and Flyer)
5. It can use Chainfire 3D to play Tegra games (can simulate the Xoom)
6. It can make phone calls (simulate a cell phone)
7. It has decent amount of apps/games, unlike the Playbook which is horrible with apps since QNX is fairly new (can try to simulate the ipad)
I also chose the Samsung Galaxy Tab because I use it the most. It is in my jacket pocket and I using it everyday. The other 3 tabs I only use it sparingly such as:
1. Use the Xoom for surfing the net...has bigger screen so better at surfing the internet.
2. Use the Playbook to watch high-profile h.264 videos because I can have files bigger than 6 GB since the Playbook uses NTFS storage and the screen is fantastic.
3. Use the ipad for games...it has so many games.
7" Tab works for it's market I think, that it IS portable, the best tablet is the one you have with you.
As much as these 10" ones look good, I can't lug 'em around as easy, if I do get a bag, I might as well bring my netbook.
Though...I were to get one, I /really/ like the look of the Transformer. No ports, but the concept of hooking it up to a base station to get the ports/extra battery life really appeals to me. Then again, do I go back to lugging the netbook around?
With the hints Asus are dropping with their new device, I think they're jumping on the idea of 'shells'. A phone sized device to lug around and use as a phone, then drop into a shell for what you need. Extra screen space, screen + keyboard.
If the big manufacturers got smart, they'd work with each other to get a standard working here. Atrix was a good idea but I think a poor implementation. If Motorola/Asus got together to make a decent standardised slot to drop your device into, I think the market would massively explode.
Oops, veered off a bit there.
But yeah, that's why 7" tablets ARE so great, they're a market Apple ignored (didn't understand?), and as shown, we all love different devices. Get the device YOU need, and it's the tablet to rule them all for YOU.
A mix of what it was advertised with
Microsoft Courier
Notion Ink Adam
top of the range Wacom
Mix well shake add what meego should have been but 20 years in the future from now plus the capability of running android apps

What!... one can dream , can I?

We are at the good-enough stage of Android devices. You're not going to find the perfect device because everyone is chasing Apple while keeping an eye on one another. Apple spent a long time developing a great device and only released it when they were ready. It's a winning strategy for them. Android will improve more quickly than iOS and you'll eventually get to the point where you can get a very good device from several manufacturers.
The iOS devices will remain ideals, but ideals only for those people willing to give up some freedom for a very refined experience. I love my Macs and find them better than any PC you can buy, and you don't have to give up much freedom to use a Mac. I use Android devices because the iOS walled garden is too stifling.
Within a year or two, we'll see Android devices that meet or exceed the quality and capabilities of iOS devices and the way Google is moving, we'll have a great OS to run on these great devices.

u r right, i want it to
Hey Everyone!
Like the thread title says, I'm looking to buy a tablet. I never really wanted one because I thought they were excessive luxury items but Amazon's Kindle Fire announcement (mostly it's $200 price tag) made me think for the first time about getting a tablet.
However, once I learned about the Fire not having a microSD port, I looked at the B&N Nook Tablet. I played with it in stores and I really liked it, but that 7" screen isn't optimal for me. I was looking for other options and came across the refurbished Transformers going for $300 on Tigerdirect. (Using my Chase credit card, I can buy it from Amazon and get 5% cashback which means I can get the Transformer for about $285)
Obviously this forum is biased, but do you guys recommend the Transformer? I'd love the Prime, but I just don't have that kind of money as a college student. Am I better off going with the newer Nook Tablet? Have you guys heard of any problems with these refurbed Transformers?
Thanks in advance!
Asus refurbs have a bad name to them lately. Either way, I love my Transformer. I returned an iPad2 to buy it. My wife returned her Kindle Fire because she expected it to be more like the Transformer. Said she'd rather have no tablet, then a half a tablet.
So, my vote goes to Yes, Buy it.
I'll chime in here. I've had my Transformer since the summer and I must admit that I absolutely love it. For me it offers the ultimate in portability and choice. Whatever your desire, be it watching a movie, reading a book, updating a work document, accessing your home computer, playing a game or browsing the web, it is an ultra portable extension of your computing life. If you are already in the Android ecosystem, once you register your tablet all of your Android apps will show up on your device for download. Some things it does not do well is picture taking but who uses a tablet for taking pictures? Tethered to my Android phone, I have the internet anywhere on the go. I use it with the Swype keyboard (you have to sign up for the beta) to take notes at meetings and can nearly keep up with the spoken word. If that's not good enough at a meeting, voice record it. If you have kids, there is plethora of movies, games activities to keep them quiet in the back seat on a long ride. I rooted my tablet more because I like to tinker, but out of the box I think you will find that there is not much need to do so if you are no so inclined. The stock ROM is smooth and responsive and full of useful apps; not overly bloated with proprietary B.S. In short, what are you waiting for? Pull the trigger and you won't regret the investment; it's tons of fun and useful when needed.
I have to agree with aburgthing, it's a great tablet. I also got mine this summer to replace my Asus eeepc 1005HA which was so slow that I would rather use my Incredible instead of that slow piece of crap. I use mine constantly.
The thing is absolutely amazing because IMO it can do way more than your standard netbook, if you're a college student (like I was up until a month ago!) you'll definitely want to get the keyboard also. It's a great addition for multiple reasons: It makes typing way easier (IMO it's kind of awkward to type with your thumbs on a 10" screen), it provides you with a stand when you don't feel like holding the tablet, It gives you another 9 hour battery, it provides you with 2 usb ports which function exactly like usb ports on a pc and you get an SD card slot which supports up to (the current) 128GB. Not to mention if you install an app like syncSMS you can send text messages to friends during class with the professor being none the wiser (since the texts can be sent and received via your TF to your phone)!
It's an amazing piece of technology, I spent $600 total on mine and I don't regret it one bit.
look for some used equipment deals first. Usually you can find better deal than refurb.

OP: I love this tablet, I use it everyday for business, gaming, media, Web surfing... You get the idea.
I would but new or from a reputable source if you go used. If you plan on typing a lot then get the dock also, it really makes this tab stand out compared to the rest.
I have zero regret with this tablet, much preferred over all the other choices... Aside from the prime, but i'm waiting for the revised version.

I bought mine "like new" from Amazon for a pretty reasonable price from warehouse deals.
id have to say the transformer in my opinion is the best tablet out there minus the prime when its worked out. ....laugh all you want but id be willing to bet i am over 10 ft away from my tab for less than a few minutes a day i m pretty much attached to it....and except for things tht are just impossible to do, i have completely replaced my laptop with it.im a student as well and its done everything ive needed it to do/
I decided to pull the trigger. I'm really excited to get it! Thanks again everyone!
BTW, what did one of you mean when you said ASUS refurbs have a bad name recently?
I am very happy with the Transformer purchased mine around the time of the Touchpad big sale.Boy glad I did not get that thing, and wanted a tablet and hands down it is the best for the price.Picked up the dock at Christmas for $99 from Amazon a good deal.Check online for a good price I was lucky the price had dropped under $370 at the time. The refurbished will save you some but not that much imo save and get it new.
Absolutely love my Transformer. I would definitely buy it again if I had to. It is fast and I have not had any problems with it at all, everything works great. I think some places are even selling new ones cheaper now that the Prime is out as well, but I could be mistaken. I say go with the transformer.
just make sure the refurbed transformers are not ones with the bad light bleeding issue! thats the only issue i've had so far with my transformer...not a major problem, but can really annoy you at times
I had an ipad, ordered the Prime. Changed my shipping speed and Amazon graciously kicked me to the back of the line and i got backordered untill mid Feb so i cancelled.
So glad it happened, i grabbed a refurb OG Transformer and i love it. With the right rom and kernel it kicks my wife's laptops butt on loading webpages, and if you have seen anything on ICS it will just be that much faster. Very glad i saved the 200 bucks, power button is pretty weak though on my refurb but ill fix it if it gets too bad.
Glad to see you pulled the trigger, welcome to the darkside!
Isn't that how it always works? I was originally with Nook Color, then I traded up to a Galaxy Tab, then I traded up to a Transformer. I kept finding reasons to justify the cost.
The TF201 has some issues of its own, particularly flaky QC and poor wi-fi and GPS reception, of which the TF101 has neither but has had QC issues in the beginning (I believe they're all ironed out now).
The TF201 has a smooth, slick design, better thinner profile and weight, a better processor, better screen, better camera, overall better device but its issues are alarming and the fact that they announced the TF700T which seems like an admission of poor design for the TF201 leads me to believe you should either stick with the tried and true TF101 or at least wait until the TF700T.
Try looking on craigslist.

You should get an ipad2. Apple came out with this anti-fingerprint technology where your fingerprints are instantly dissolved the moment you touched the screen.
Hello Note 10.1 users.
As stated, this is for my younger sister who just got out of college.
She's considering a tablet and I have a Note II which I love. I've always been an android user, since the nexus one (which she uses since i got the galaxy nexus).
When I'm reading online, even android websites say that android tablets are not on par w/ the iPad. I see that it's about the apps, but I feel like all the big apps are on android too, so I'm just confused.
Has anyone here had significant experience w/ one of the "new" ipads (3rd or 4th) that can offer their thoughts?
The reason I'm considering the Note 10.1 is because the only other 10 inch android tablet that seems good is the transformer infinity and their forums are just RIDDLED with problems, which I don't see Note 10.1 users having. So it seems to be the most stable 10 inch tablet on android.
There's two ipads in my home. My step sons and my wife's. My wife just got the 10.1 after seeing mine and gave her other son the ipad. Just go to a store a try all your options and see what you like best.

Depends on what she wants, does she want high resolution screen/media consumption device or a device more geared toward productivity?

You need to consider what your Sister wants to do with it.
What does she do for a living, what brand of phone does she have, will she be a casual user or a power user.
Would she be happy with a plain Jane iPad as far as customizing goes?
Will she enjoy the artistic aspect of the Note 10.1's S-Pen.
As far as apps go... both android and ios have a wide range of quality apps. that would satisfy user of any age or profession
I have used iPod, iPad, Blackberry Playbook, Kindle fire, and a Note 10.1
My favorite device is the Note 10.1 here are some of the reasons why
The S-Pen, muti-window & dual view, air view, easy clip, smart stay, buddy photo share, live video w/ chapter preview, smart remote, formula match and pop up play.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is truly The New Way

Once you get used to that you never wanna have something other. I tell you, two aspects of the note are essential: as mentioned the multiwindow feature and the spen (including all the hardware). I use my note for studying and all i have to carry to university is this tablet. I do ALL my work on it with lecture notes but thats another long story... you can find a lot here in this forum.
Back to the multiwindow thing. I promise you, once tried you ll get addicted to it. The feeling is "pretty close" to working on a desktop/laptop machine. I owned the p7500 before i moved on to the note and that was a whole new experience. But to be honest you have to be rooted to REALLY use multiwindow in nearly every app. out of the box it just supports a couple of stock apps and that really sucked.
The Note is the best tablet on the market with one glaring deficiency: it's 147PPI display. Nothing competes with S Pen, S Note, multiview, airview, and all the additional features Samsung packs in to it. For someone that values those features (I do) the 147PPI display is the price you have to pay to get them.
For someone who just wants consumption, the two best tablets are the Xperia Z or Samsung P5200 (their version of the Nexus 10). The first was just announced and I'm not sure of when it goes on sale in the U.S. The second was leaked with no detail yet on features (other than the display resolution), price or availability. The N10 has a ton of issues and because it's "pure Google" missing a lot of features in other tablets. If you have a Costco near you buy her a Note there and, if she doesn't like it or something new comes along, you can return it within 90 days no-questions asked.

Well, it looks like I can get a refurbished one for 380 on ebay. I think I'm going to do that. The Xperia Z looks like a VERY premium tablet, so I'm sure it'll carry a premium price too, and she can barely afford the $380. I would've got her the nexus 10 as I love my nexus 7, but after reading through xda, and seeing that it has nothing but random reboot problems...I said f that.

What android website writes such nonsense?
The Nexus 10 is better then the Ipad in EVERYTHING.
The Note 10 is better then the Nexus 10 because it has the s-pen, s-note, a sd-card slot and so on.
You seem not to know that the question "Android or Apple" is a religious, political question (seriously).
How dare you come to a Android forum and ask about an Apple product? You heretic! hehe (joke).
Now seriously again:
Most of us would never buy an Ipad, whatever specs it has, because it is an Apple product.
All apple products have the apple philosophy of being closed, limited.
Apple makes easy products, suited for your grandma.
To do this they have to RESTRICT your freedom to do things with the device. This limits what you can do with the device and limits your control on even your own data, but it limits also your chances to damage your device by doing something wrong.
A elderly person should buy an apple product because it is easy and an elderly person does not need advanced features.
A smart, young person should buy an android because it gives him the freedom to modify/customize everything and lets him do whatever he wants.
It is a political question:
Do you prefer the former "Soviet Union" (Apple) or the USA (Android)?
Soviet union (Apple): Easy life, the state gives you a job, a home but you have no freedom. (Apple Ipad: easy to use, but limited freedom.)
USA (Android): You have the freedom to become a billionaire like bill gates or fail and land homeless in the streets. How good or bad your life is, is in your hands. (Android Note 10.1: You can do whatever your want and can do many things an Ipad can not. But, you can also root your device, do some error and brick it.)
The Ipad does not have a Pen!
Try to use a Note 10.1 with the Pen for a week and then tell us whether you can continue to live with a device without a Pen.
Get her the Ipad, if you get her the note 10.1 and see what its like she won't end up with a new tablet or you'll have to get another one...
I use my note 10.1 for everything. It does everything the ipad does and more. You can customise it to how you like it and change the rom if it doesn't suit you or you aren't getting updates. Modding is easy and throw in the s-pen and you have a brilliant tablet. So I say, get your sister the Ipad or you'll end up with a new tablet and she'll be disappointed....:good:

Iran's nuclear ambitions are a political question. As is Palestine vs. Israel and Pyongyang's lunacy du jour. Android vs. iOS is a practical question. Do you want your tablet experience to be easy, consistent and well defined out of the box with content spoon fed to you and in return give up some flexibility? If so, pick iOS. Do you want your tablet experience to allow for a high degree of customization and configuration with more content flexibility and in return you have to have a higher degree of technical knowledge and need to invest more time? Pick Android.
I'm committed to Android personally but consistently recommend iOS to my non-technical friends because for people that just want to do stuff without having to think about it iOS is a better choice. If someone asks me whether they should go with Android or iOS I hand them my phone or tablet and tell them to play with it. If after a few minutes they look totally confused I recommend iOS. If they get in to the menus and apps and start asking decent questions I recommend Android. Just because we personally enjoy and support Android doesn’t mean iOS isn’t a viable solution for quite a few people.
And the N10 is a train wreck. There are a ton of h/w and QC issues along with it using a barren AOSP interface designed for a phone. 4.2 still has tons of issues that haven’t been resolved yet. The number of people unhappy with the N10 is the highest I’ve seen for an Android tablet to date which is saying something because Asus’ tablets are no walk in the park. The N4’s got more than its share of issues including a rather serious thermal throttling problem when under extended load. Just because a Google device is “pure” and/or says “Nexus” on it doesn’t automatically make it good.
If your sister has any intention of using the tablet for just playing "games" or watching stuff online, you're better off getting her an iPad. You won't have to field any questions because she won't have this bias that the device is hard to use.
If your sister is the kind of person who likes to tweak her devices, do digital art, maybe take notes, you can't lose with the Note 10.1.
If I were you, I'd just stick them with the iPad because I hate getting complaints based on people's preconceived notion on how hard Android devices are to use.

You are wrong.
"I do not want a device that restricts my freedom and does not respect my privacy", "I do not want to give money to a company that produces devices that restrict freedom and do not respect privacy", "I do not want to buy products from a company that gets rich by exploiting poor Chinese workers" ARE political and ethical choices.
Just like "buying fair trade products", "not buying meat, because you do not want to kill animals", "not buying north-Korean/Iranian/Israeli" are political and ethical choices. Understand?

I wrote almost the same.
But...
The amount of technical knowledge required to use STOCK samsung/android is not much higher then with an Ipad and your CAN invest time to do advanced stuff, but you do not have to. One can live fine also without root, cwm, overclocking, side-loading, ROM-flashing. My 70 year old "non technical" mother lives fine with a stock samsung android phone. She does not need an Iphone.
Stock samsung/android is very similar to iOS. We all know why.... because Android/Samsung copied it from Apple.
Just like Windows is a copy of the Apple Macintosh. So you recommend your "non technical friends" to buy Macintosh (iMac as they call them now) and not a Windows pc?
The comparison iOS/Android is exactly the same as Macintosh/Windows.
I do not underestimate the intelligence of my friends/family.

i have owned Note 10.1 for 5 months since it came to my country. screen is ****! real ****! u know it has the same screen as the first galaxy tab 10.1? YEAH! go for iPad 4! i will get the iPad 5 when it comes out, my first ever iOS device that i would own. i have used iPad 4 of my friend and it is really really great. my only grudge is that there is no file browser and everything has to be transferred through the iTunes. thats it! nothing else! go for iPad 4 it has the best screen and the best app support and the best of all, it has a great battery life and as a bonus a great resale value... hope u got my point
I gotta tell you, I've used Android and iOS for a long time. Still have an iPad 2 in the house and had an original iPad. I truly and honestly don't get why people continue to perpetuate this myth that Android is "hard to use" and "requires technical knowledge" as well as all the other comments about it that imply difficulty. I've actually found it to be the opposite. Android seems to just make sense to me. In iOS everything I try to do is a monumental pain in the ass. It seems even the most basic activities require going to all kinds of different places.
As for your sister, also consider "total cost of ownership" which goes way beyond the cost of the tablet itself. It seems to me that comparable iOS apps are generally more expensive...not to mention that if you get sucked into the iOS world you usually have to buy a tablet app and a phone app separately. Lots of Android apps work perfectly on a tablet and phone and look great so you really don't need 2 of the same app.
I would also suggest, unless she needs a stylus because she likes to draw or whatever, there are much less expensive and equally good options out there for far less money than the Note 10.1 or the iFad.
^^^ this. Replaced my wife's iphone 4 with a note 2. She asked me how to put her music on it. I told her to plug it into her laptop make a music folder on her sd card and drag her music into it. Her mouth dropped and said that's it?! I always had to work her iTunes for her and it annoyed the crap out of me. Glad she took my advice this time when she upgraded.

I haven't ever owned an Apple device, but it's definitely not "easier to use" when I tried my friends' phones. I mean, the way people talk about Android stuff like you have to be a techie to use it.. Sure, you COULD geek out to do a lot of other stuff, but it's completely unnecessary. The only reason I know a little bit about geeking out is because I found the XDA forums for my first Android tablet and I wanted to do more than just browsing.
Take the note 10, about the interface of apple and how it is easy, you could install a launcher that will make it like the ipad or even windows phone
Done !!!

With the Note 10.1 I was able to download a pdf, import it to SNote, fill out the pdf, exported the edited pdf to pdf and email it to the company that wanted me to print it out, write on it then scan it and after all that, email it back to them..
I'm not sure this can be done or not on an iPad for I have never owned an Apple product nor do I even want to own one
This is reason enough for me to say, purchase the Note 10.1
Got the note and my sister loves it! Thanks to you all
Hi, I am getting a gadget that I choose as a gift and since I already have a nice phone/laptop/desktop all other stuff. I am thinking about getting a tablet. I am gonna use it for reading PDF in classroom and taking notes so it needs to have a stylus, so I can get rid of bulky books and notepads. I am stuck between choosing note 10.1 and Nvidia Shield.
How futureproof is Note ?
Shield already has Android L update. Does Note also has it ? If not will it get it ? When ?
How reliable is the stylus ? will it cover the needs of an engineer ?
Would you recommend buying the Note ? Why ?
Thanks in advance

For your needs I would consider note 10.1 2014 here is why:
No manufactures have Spen as good as Samsung note, hand down and it's very reliable.
Highest Resolution for tablet - is top notch for reading
External SDcard support
3gb ram - the highest in all tablet devices
Note 10.1 will get Android L.
I just got a note 4 (newest Samsung phone) and I don't see any real advantage over the note 10.1 2014 except for a little bit more advance Spen (easier to share and use and added twice the sensitives but I don't see any advantage). So based on this the note 10.1 will be a keeper for 3-4 years or more, unless in the future there will be a new invented feature that you may want enough to switch.
well the tablet is now a year old, but the hardware still holds up. Samsung released several devices way after this with almost exactly the same specs. I'd say it has another year left of still being somewhat high-end but like all technology, newer stuff will be better. On the software front i'd expect a long wait for lollipop and then sammy will probably stop its updates there. The dev community is slow on this thing so i wouldn't get your hopes up for updates that way. Sure, it could happen but don't buy this tablet assuming it will happen.
Yes, I agree with all the comments. I'd say wait for a month or so as Samsung will release note 10.1 2015 edition. The pricing of the new edition should not be an issue considering the competition out there in the market.
Stylus - certainly the note for an Android. Surface Pro 3 is nice if you need more, but it is big and heavy. Note pro 12 is too big for easy 1-hand reading in my opinion too (I can just palm the 10.1). I like mine and will be keeping it at least another year as my primary reading/surfing device. I have not been quite as happy taking handwriting notes on it as I thought I would be.
