[Q] Is it worth the buy ? - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

Hi, I am getting a gadget that I choose as a gift and since I already have a nice phone/laptop/desktop all other stuff. I am thinking about getting a tablet. I am gonna use it for reading PDF in classroom and taking notes so it needs to have a stylus, so I can get rid of bulky books and notepads. I am stuck between choosing note 10.1 and Nvidia Shield.
How futureproof is Note ?
Shield already has Android L update. Does Note also has it ? If not will it get it ? When ?
How reliable is the stylus ? will it cover the needs of an engineer ?
Would you recommend buying the Note ? Why ?
Thanks in advance

For your needs I would consider note 10.1 2014 here is why:
No manufactures have Spen as good as Samsung note, hand down and it's very reliable.
Highest Resolution for tablet - is top notch for reading
External SDcard support
3gb ram - the highest in all tablet devices
Note 10.1 will get Android L.
I just got a note 4 (newest Samsung phone) and I don't see any real advantage over the note 10.1 2014 except for a little bit more advance Spen (easier to share and use and added twice the sensitives but I don't see any advantage). So based on this the note 10.1 will be a keeper for 3-4 years or more, unless in the future there will be a new invented feature that you may want enough to switch.

well the tablet is now a year old, but the hardware still holds up. Samsung released several devices way after this with almost exactly the same specs. I'd say it has another year left of still being somewhat high-end but like all technology, newer stuff will be better. On the software front i'd expect a long wait for lollipop and then sammy will probably stop its updates there. The dev community is slow on this thing so i wouldn't get your hopes up for updates that way. Sure, it could happen but don't buy this tablet assuming it will happen.

Yes, I agree with all the comments. I'd say wait for a month or so as Samsung will release note 10.1 2015 edition. The pricing of the new edition should not be an issue considering the competition out there in the market.

Stylus - certainly the note for an Android. Surface Pro 3 is nice if you need more, but it is big and heavy. Note pro 12 is too big for easy 1-hand reading in my opinion too (I can just palm the 10.1). I like mine and will be keeping it at least another year as my primary reading/surfing device. I have not been quite as happy taking handwriting notes on it as I thought I would be.

Vega vs Galaxy Tab 10.1…not a comparison!

Hi Folks,
I was just wondering. Has anyone here got a Galaxy Tab 10.1? I have VegaComb 8.1 installed on my Vega and let me tell you I am very happy with it. However, having used this for a few weeks now, I’m finding myself using it more than my Laptop. I’m even beginning to look at some serious software i.e Office type apps, handwriting because I think it’s proving to be very valuable. But, here lies my dilemma. Do I invest in Galaxy Tab 10.1 so that all the shortcoming of the Vega (compared to the Galaxy Tab 10.1) can be addressed? You know, the poor screen viewing angle, weight and screen size. I’ve investigated quite a bit about the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it seems that everything the Vega can do, the Galaxy Tab can do (and dare I say… sometimes even better!).
The VegaComb devs have done a fantastic job and I really appreciate their time and effort. Without them I think I may have parted with my Vega a few months ago.
Anyway, I thought I’d see what other Vega users think. Do I go for it or not?
Thanks.
This is purely my opinion but I believe if you are going to rely on the tablet heavily and wanting to invest in apps and do you work on it, its better to purchase something more reliable. I am not saying Vega is not good ( I have Vega replica and I am very happy with it ) but personally I would get something more sturdy and well built if that device is going to be the primary.
Before I get this replica I had Asus Transformer and it was totally fantastic. Unfortunately I had to sell it due to needing the money. But If I get a chance I would look into something like that or Galaxy tab.
But bear in mind there no such a thing as "perfect" device. All of their own pro and cons!
Hope this helps
I agree with "bennz"!
I think you can't compare a 1/2 cheaper Vega/clone with a Galaxy Tab 10.1, it's like trying to compare HTC Wildfire with double priced SGS2/iPhone4. You just can't!

I don't think price is anything to do with it, I bought the original Tab (FroYo) for £400 and it's not a patch on the Vega
The Vega has been an excellent device to tinker with: fairly innovative as an Android tablet, inexpensive, very good value for money and well supported by the devs. By now, the market is far more mature, and there are better offers, more reliable as bennz said, and better adjusted in price. No more Toshiba Folios and original Galaxy Tabs (as in, overpriced "top brand" pieces of crap) are in sight, so to say, unless Sony majorly screws up their new tablet series, and there's a much bigger variety to pick your tab from: I'd take 7 inches for my next tablet.

[Q] Should I purchase the Nexus 7?

I am an extremely indecisive person and am having a hard time pulling the trigger on a tablet purchase before August. I am leaning towards ordering a Nexus 7, but just keep wondering if that is the best tablet for me. I am a college student that is looking for something lightweight and portable to take to class that will allow me to take notes easily and browse the internet when I am bored.
I can't decide between the Nexus 7, waiting to see what the Fire 2 has in store, the Galaxy Tab 2, a refurb Asus Transformer, HTC Flyer, refurb Xoom or pretty much any other tablet that has decent specs and a price tag around $250.
Somebody help me, please. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Go with what you do best - don't decide now.
Wait until some of your classmates bring one in, and try it out.
Electronic gadgets never have to be bought - today.
I would like to add on to this question as I am also a college student on the fence about buying the Nexus 7.
Are there any really good note taking apps for Android? Like anything similar to OneNote on Windows?
Also are there any stylus like accessories for the Nexus 7?
Same answer - the Nexus 7 is not being sold as a note taking device.
If I were you, I would wait for a fellow student to bring one in and try it for notes.
It might be great, or it might just be too small.
Stylus support is something else you would have to just try. The Nexus 7 is not made for stylus input, but that is not to say there might be a third party solution.
Taking notes on the onscreen keyboard may be - challenging.
Voice dictation seems to work great - but your fellow students might object.

Correct me if I am wrong there is an Android version of OneNote available. There's also EverNote which is a decent note taking application.
I'm not really planning on using the onscreen keyboard, I would mainly be hand writing my notes (since most of my classes deal with drawing diagrams and using formulas and stuff) but thanks for the info guys, I probably do just need to do a lot more research before I make a decision.
Well I planned on using a tablet keyboard with any tablet that I purchased - I just can't decide which tablet to purchase.
Does anyone know that if I purchased the Samsung Tab 2, how long (guesstimate) it would be before a jelly bean update was released for it?
If you plan on taking notes with a pen line stylus you will definitely need to wait for 3rd party android development. Just the mere act that the screen register your palm when you rest your hand on it to draw with a stylus is a bad sign. All these android tablets are really design for entertainment. For a $250 choice is very limited. The only alternative I see is the Microsoft surface, but that's going to cost you $500.
The quote (maybe second hand) that I had seen from Asus was that they did not intend to offer a keyboard dock, because the 7" form factor was too small.
Tread with care when you explore new uses for what admittedly is a very versatile tablet. Might work great - might not.
I did see that Asus was not coming out with a keyboard dock for the Nexus 7, but I planned on using some brand of bluetooth keyboard with it or any other brand of tablet that I ended up with.

What to Buy or Galaxy Note 10.0 2014 or Nexus 10

Could I possibly have your thoughts regarding whether to buy the Note or the Nexus 10. I have been using my friends Nexus 10 for a while and am impressed by its performance and reading up on the note it seems to have some performance issues. Have these been sorted out yet?
Also one of my main requirements for a tablet is its ability to highlight text very quickly be it in a pdf or Epub currently on the Nexus 10 I use an app called Moon+ Reader Pro which I find very slow during lectures and was hoping that the Note with its S pen can perform the task much quick. Is this the case?
Finally I going to the USA in a couple of weeks and noticed that the tablets are a lot cheaper over there. Would I have any issues if I purchased the unit over there i.e. warranty software hardware.
Is it the same?
Sorry I live in the UK
Thanks in advance for any help

As far as performance goes I think they have been ironed out. I got mine last week a d it shipped with the latest firmware. The only problem I've had is occasional reboots when trying to play youtube videos in the chrome browser and note the app.
The spen really makes it easier to highlight and copy and paste blocks of text that a finger is just too big to get effectivly.

I prefer the Note 10.1 over the Nexus 10. Why? Productivity and good tablet at the same time. I doubt you would have any issues, maybe warranty issues.
The Note 10.1 2014 performance is awesome and that will stay long without having significant performance issue.
The lag can be ignored and doesn't affect the whole performance.
Regarding the nexus, i was in the same delima before taking the decision and get my Note
The Note is better in Ram, Processor, Display, allow SIM cards, allow Micro-SD cards ... Nexus 10 is better only in the price & receiving Android OTAs very fast.
The Nexus 10 became old (released in 2012) and after another year you will feel that it has very low specs or you can wait for a newer release of the device.
I got tired of waiting for a new N10. I am really liking the Note so far. TouchWiz is a little... Busy... But this tablet has so many great features, it's really a great device. With how old the current N10 is now, it's not even an option IMO.
Nexus 10 Gen2
I am only see some expected spec since last year
but no more news about it
I would prefer S-Pen of Note Series

i have no nexus experience. from reviews its a very goof tablet, i do like my note and spen gives options for doing editing and markup that other tablets don't have or would be harder.
my caution is having a us version tablet in Europe. if you have lots of media purchased in UK i don't know what that would do. Versions of android on tablets are different. rooted all this can be changed, af you know your going that route. i dont have enough knowledge to tell you what problems you might have, and i would recommend further research .
if you buy in us i would get it quickly and give it a workout before leaving. many problems can be detected in a day or so , and you could return it while still here. personally i would hesitate buying us unless savings are substantial.

I was considering both tablets myself and ended up with the Note 10.1 2014 because (1) I have a Note 2 phone, (2) There was no ETA on the Nexus 10 v2, and (3) The Nexus 10 does not have a SD card slot. Right now I have a 64GB MicroSD caard in my Note 10.1 2014, which is HUGE. I don't like Google limiting me to cloud storage on a WiFi only device.
Otherwise they are probably the two best tablets available right now, so you're not really going to go wrong with either.

I got the note for exactly the same reasons...and impatience.
Downsides of the note are the bloat, sick of some of it (scrapbook constantly clogging up memory, video trimmer thing as well, never use these so dont need them in memory!) but havent yet rooted a device. Have a note 2 and dont use the pen that often but it is very useful when I do want to use it......its a bit like spending the extra getting a leatherman with a bit kit or one not as advanced.....you dont use all the tools all the time but they are there for when you do want to use them.
I think I could get away without the 64gb extra as most of my stuff is online or on a HD on my home network, I have got into using cloud/google drive a lot more (I am a Google certified teacher) which I am finding very good but trying to change a habit of a lifetime is difficult.
Recent articles are pointing to Google dropping out of this sector of the tablet market.....so who knows if a new Nexus 10 will come out.
My 1st post
I 'm new to this forum, & have similar confusion for tab purchase. I'm student & looking for all rounder table which would sustain for coming 2-3 yrs of update & advancements of apps to run on best tab. As google is about to stop its hardware line from this year so next best tab is Note 10.1 2014, considering productivity this is suitable to me. But how easy it is to use for layman & can ever this tab can get Kitkat update?
Sorry if I go wrong somewhere.
Depends if you are getting the 3g/4g version of the Note. Some American networks use different frequencies for their 3/4G to the rest of the world. You might need to check out if it's possible to ge the note you want and if the sim card you put in is able to be used....
If you want a wifi only then there should be no trouble except for warranty purposes...
I would play with the tablet a lot to see if there is any problems and put it through it's paces....
Guess what....I purchased it !!!

Had the Nexus 10, its a fast, stable, simple UI tablet. But I got bored of it because I got used to my Note 2 and because of not having an Spen.
I gave it to my daughter and bought the 10.1 '14. TW may have some performance issues on stock but I really like most of the TW apps. Only thing I dont like about TW is the UI so I use Nova Prime. And honestly, I didnt get most of the TW issues posted here (maybe just luck).
I'm on Wicked ROM (4.3 TW Debloated) so its even a lot faster than before. Go for the Note 10 bro.

My thoughts exactly.
I would have bought the N10 if Google had stopped dragging their heels and brought it out before Christmas but they still haven't come up with the goods. The current N10 is old enough now that I wouldn't even consider it.
The UI on the Note 10.1 2014 isn't as smooth as that on an iPad, which it ought to be given the raw performance, but otherwise, I haven't had any performance issues at all.

New Tablets no Note

Samsung has shown their new hi spec line-10.si and 8.4 inches but no new Note tablet. Does anyone think that they are done with the note line? Seems crazy but???

I don't expect to see a successor to the Note 8, which is really a shame because, as we all know, it's a great size for portability and s-pen use. I've been quite happy with mine. Especially after the S Tab announcement, for what ever reason, I think the 8.4 S Tab is the unofficial Note 8 successor.
However, I'm (possibly) in a different situation than most in that I have a Note 3 so I've got my S-pen there. The only thing I don't like about the Note series is I always feel like I'm limited to TW-based ROMS so that I don't lose s-pen functionality. I flashed an AOSP ROM once, but it just didn't feel right on the Note (at the time at least) since the s-pen and probably other features were unusable so I restored a nandroid of Civato's before long.
This is probably heretical to say here, but the S Tabs are exactly what I was hoping they would be (actually I was disappointed that the Tab Pro 8.4 didn't have those specs). I'm lusting after the new 8.4 hardcore... I've been considering a tablet upgrade for a while. Hardware-wise it's exactly what I had been wanting, including the lack of a pen, as I often feel sort of "limited" when browsing the development forums... however I definitely understand the disappointment of all those without another device with an s-pen to play with
Lastly, I've seen the new tabs dinged a mark because they have the S5 back. I haven't used an S5, but however the back feels, as long as it's solid and stays on, the texture just isn't a factor. My Note 3 has the nicest backplate that I've seen on a Samsung device... and it's covered by a case 100% of the time. I've got no gripes with the back of my Note 8 that I can recall, as it's covered by a case 100% of the time. I wonder what percent of users of these high-end devices use them caseless? I guess it's good to mention something like that in a review, but considering it a con (independent of overall build-quality) in a pros / cons list just seems totally irrelevant to the majority of users.
Has anyone heard anything about the different iterations of the new Tab S? The ones they're showing now are wifi only, but its mentioned that an LTE version is coming later. In the past, Samsung has always made a version of their tablets with telephony capability (though they were never released in the US). I use an N5100 as my primary cellphone, so I'm particularly interested in whether there will be a Tab S with phone functionality. I haven't seen this mentioned in any of the articles I've read.

Yes, we will get a Tab S with phone functionality. Saw it in a video by Android Authority on YouTube.
On phone, can't paste link...
Are you referring to SideSync? If so, that requires having a Samsung phone in addition to the tablet. I'm interested in using the Tab S solely as a smartphone. In other words, is the Tab S going to be like the Note i467 or the Note n5100?
We are closing this thread in favor of the 19 page thread already in progress here:

Merge the Tab S with the Note product line already.

Isn't that the best course of action Samsung could take?
Sure it'll be more expensive...unless Samsung could...I don't know... somehow shave down costs by deleting some TW feature(s) and inserting those costs savings in the merger of the 2 product lines?
This is not a Samung bashing thread, I just want to know your opinions about this topic.
Write down what you think's the best course of action.

Thats what Ive been saying for a year. It took a year for me to get a 32 gigabyte 8.4 inch s-series. I'm pretty upset today with Samsung anyways due to the fact I own almost everything in the Note series I had a Note 8.0 which I give to my mom, I had a Note 3 which I sold to upgrade to the nNote 4 and the Note Edge which I love. I have the 2014 Note 10.1, and Note Pro 12.2. The unveiling in a week will now not be 2 Notes. One Note 5 and the S6 Edge! I wanted a Note Edge 2 soooo bad! Then Samsung decides to make the new Notes like the S series...No more removable battery and NOOO MORE Sd Card slots! This was my breaking point. I read every form known to man and I listen to the people all year say that if the note 5 does not have a slot for an SD card or if you can't remove the back for the battery this is going to be a problem with Samsung in no way listened to the people. Also thousands of people were waiting for the Note Edge 2! I don't understand why they just don't listen to what the people want. I have all my device is rooted because I like custom ROMs and I like themes I like tweaking my device I've spent close to $5000 on Samsung merchandise in just the last couple years, only to the watch them not listen to the people.... I bought my Note 10.1 2014 in January 2014 and havnt heard a single thing about a new note 10.1 tablet since. Becoming a stupid company and its nice to see them lose share in the industry maybe they will wake up before its too late as they made some great devices in the past hence I own a Note 10.1 and also the S3. But my next tablet and phone wont be Samsung unless they change their mentality.

Yes it's a shame that Samsung's leaving out the sd card and removable battery, but if we get an extremely optimised OS in return for it, then I won't complain. I can work around the sd card limitations, but I refuse to work with a stuttering peace of junk.
Wow 5000 spent? You must really love Samsung lol.
Maybe a normal tablet is the way to go, and use a capacitive stylus with it(jot pro or something)
But I can't think of an excellent Android tablet at the moment that doesn't start with Samsung or Sony.

Yea it's a shame really, the original note was a super hero... But then the note 2014 upgraded the hardware but the software seemed to have slowed down or something like that. Either way it didn't feel the same way as the original one.
I'm never going to buy another Samsung device (in 10 years maybe) because of their negligence of not properly optimising this tablet and just pushing out non critical incremental updates.
the only difference that I can see between a kitkat update from mid 2014 and late 2015 is the addition of a kinetic/friction movement effect on the floating window icons (when you try to swipe away an icon).

This. I'm a pennable tablet nutjob and have gone through so many machines now to find that "ultimate" note taking device for school. The Note 10.1 is just the perfect size and weight (IMO). I've realized at school I'll do just fine with an Android tablet considering when I go home I have a powerful desktop to work from. OneNote Android will suffice as long as I import class lecture PDF/PPTs on my desktop the night before class.
At the moment, this Note or the 12.2 are the only options with true active digitizer support. No other manufacturer is targeting note-takers, it's sad. I'd be all over a Sony tablet if they offered one with a wacom digitizer.
I really think the note tablet is dead, Samsung just doesn't seem interested. They released the tab A with spen but it's mid tier. I would buy it as I am being sold on the 4:3 dimensions but there is literally no development. It's not like we can count on Samsung to upgrade this. It sits at lollipop and will maybe get android M when N has been out for over 6 months
Possibilty of a tablet @ note's event
Apperently samsung'll introduce a tablet at the note's event:

Let's hope its not a 7 inch tablet like the article suggests.
