When i squeeze or firmly press the top left part of the tablet, the screen goes all whacky and there is a distinct clicking noise when it happens, and then the tablet reboots. Anyone know whats going on?

Ye mine also reboots when I put it on the ground and jump on it ... Weird right?
If you use it how you are supposed to and stop trying to break your tablet it might not do funny things like your experiencing and that don't make it a bad product... it makes the user a abuser when it comes to their hardware.

Should have held out for the nerfglass version
While I laughed at the previous replies to this post, I actually have experienced an issue with the build quality. I've had to send it back to ASUS repair twice because the touch screen would go wacky on me. I turned on developers touch input so I could see where the problem was and it would show 5-7 inputs (I am not doing anything, just letting the tablet sit on its back). A temporary fix would be to push back on a corner of the tablet until the dots went away. Recoveries would not fix this. Factory resets would not fix this.

Yea, that's a digitizer problem. I have the same issue on my atrix, but I'm upgrading soon, so I don't really care.

Actually, was the tablet docked while the screen glitched out on you. I noticed today at work that, when docked, the tablet would register random touches and long presses, even when I wasn't touching it.
I used to have the same screen problem. Seemed to happen the most when charging, and when playing a certain game, 6 guns. I factory reset, and installed the game again, and sure enough the screen started going crazy again. I uninstalled the game and haven't had any problems since...knock on wood.

well - i have that too now - (see attached videos / screenshot)
though i unlocked it - i think its an hardware issue (anyone knows if thats still covered by the warranty (I'm talking about Germany here - it should still be covered i think))
i think thats the problem some have too?!
I'll keep you updated if i get a replacement unit or not.
btw is there a way to lock it again so they can't b1tch about it during boot - or hide that message?
btw - i had quite an oddysee trying to get it back to stock rom - since i wiped the rom as well (and so the whole SDcard...) so if you need to send it in it should be stock (so i thought i share it)
make Nandroid
copy your sd card to your pc/mac (i used the Samba app since its faster than usb somehow)
boot into recovery (TWRP2 in my case) and wipe rom - now all is gone
download the recovery.img from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668173
boot the tab into fastboot mode select USB symbol
in a cmd push the img to the tab
Code:
C:\Android_SDK\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot.exe flash boot recovery.img
sending 'boot' (5306 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.640s]
writing 'boot'...
OKAY [ 1.954s]
finished. total time: 3.596s
C:\Android_SDK\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot.exe reboot
rebooting...
finished. total time: 0.003s
Then boot into Recoverymode - and adb works within CWM (thank the maker! )
C:\Android_SDK\android-sdk\platform-tools\>adb devices
List of devices attached
0123456789ABCDEF recovery

Click to collapse
then push the stockrom:
Code:
C:\Android_SDK\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb.exe push WW_epad-user-9.4.3.30.zip
/sdcard/TWRP
1311 KB/s (330284653 bytes in 246.023s)
in CWM select the zip to install and wait 7 minutes - then reboot - then wait another 7 mins till the stockrom is booted
done
btw - its not a software issue like a game caused it - phone tester still reports the same in stockrom.
PS:
i know this is a more detroured way to do it but since i didn't pay attention and wiped my SDCard i thought someone could use this who did the same
PPS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757077 <- this didn't work for me somehow - i got "FAILED (remote: (InsufficientMemory))" all the time

*fingers crossed*
As in every mass production process, there is always chance for some quality issues. That is why some OEMs replace units with ease, as a warranty for their quality processes.
If by any chance, you got a defective TF, just trade it.
I’ve seen some minuscular build problems, but i think the cause is the plastic build compared to other unibody design.

There's yet another thing I noticed.
I had HTC headset connected to listen to music.
The cable touched the display and the display somehow accepted it as input like I touched on it with my hand
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6PTsAbxpkg&feature=youtu.be
So my 2 month old TF300T started having the touchscreen going crazy issue as well.
It started a day after I noticed a crack in the glass in the bottom right corner (On the rim, not over the screen).
I'm going to try to get a RMA because I can't do anything with the tablet anymore, I only know the touchscreen still "responds" because I managed to unlock it once and saw what was going on (clicking and shifting everywhere, keyboard typing itself). Otherwise I would have thought the touch screen was completely unresponsive.
I just hope the crack in the glass won't void my warranty on the digitizer.
Related
So my first transformer was awesome except for the touchscreen that was unresponsive on a whole line across the tablet, the minimal light bleed, and the unbalanced speakers. I decided to rma it with ASUS and sent it back.
I just got it back today. The shipping paper shows a new part for a screen (I'm guessing.. 90R-OK061L20000Y). I immediately installed a multi touch and paint app to check the screen only to find an almost identical unresponsive section of the screen (on both it was unresponsive to the lightest of touch only. Heavy touches still registered.)
My question to my fellow Transformer owners is should I RMA again? Maybe switch to the galaxy tab? Hope its software related and wait for a fix? Our just ignore it?
Anyone else have this problem?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
The Transformer is nice especially with dock if all works well, mine does, but if that were me I'd be unloading it and getting a Galaxy 10.1.
I just tested mine with the same paint program. I colored the whole screen with 1 finger and everything seems to be in order. Funny how that program registers 7 finger multitouch but 8 will cause a FC.
Anyway. I would RMA it again. This time stating that the problem wasn't fixed. Maybe put a bunch of post-it notes with arrows all pointing to the spot there it is whacked.

If this really is an issue only with "lightest of touch" I think you would be better off selling the unit. Touch screens often have areas that require more or less contact. The fact that they replaced the screen or digitizer and it does not meet your expectations suggests the settings they are using will not meet your expectations as to the amount of contact required.
Just a quick question, wherever you guys bought your transformer, did anyone buy a warranty through the retailer? Personally I work a BestBuy, so a 1 year with damage warranty was dirt cheap for me, so i bought it, normally I dont get the plans bc I treat my gadgets like angels, but with a 10 inch screen thats only protected by glass I thought I should, especially with all the defects from ASUS going around (although mines working perfect!).
Well as an example when trying to launch an app along the line a hard press is required

well I would insist on a replacement if the issue is still there. You would of thought they would of tested this before it was returned to you.
I would of thought it would be other hardware other than the screen that is defective and they have simply replaced the incorrect part.
I called asus again and they game another rma. They paid for doing too, that's nice. hoping for a fix though.

I just got a quantum dirt cheap last week on eBay with what the seller described as " constant slowdowns and freezing"
Well, a quick restore to factory and update later the quantum is running great, with 1 issue...
The top left on the screen ( in portrait mode) starts to register rapid left/right motions on it's own. It's that one location regardless of orientation. The strange thing is if I tap the power button and wake it up like 2 seconds later then it stops.
It only happens once or twice a day, but I can't seem to figure out if it's a hardware or software issue.
Either way, a $50, off contract quantum that works fine otherwise doesn't bother me too much.
Quick edit.... I have tried wiping the phone twice with no luck

It's not the digitizer. My Quantum has actually had this problem sporadically (maybe once every 2 months) as well. I got my wife a broken Quantum off of eBay and I replaced the digitizer with a completely new one and I've seen it happen once on there too.

I know there have been a few (perhaps this is an understatement) threads about the touchscreen wonkiness some users are experiencing, but I'd like a consolidated bit of advice.
My touchscreen is weird. Sometimes everything seems perfectly normal, but I've noticed a few examples of it being weird:
When trying to put an app shortcut on the homescreen (long pressing) it often doesn't work; it seems to think I am moving my finger when I'm not
When in drawing apps, if I try to draw fine lines, sometimes it registered random points and lines on other parts of the screen
Using a multitouch test app, it periodically will register a third touch when only using two fingers
The keyboard double taps letters almost every single time I type
So my questions are:
Do you think this is a software issue? If so, how do you explain some people not having the problem.
Do you think my best bet is to exchange it? I have no issues other than the touchscreen (no light bleed, etc.) and I'm a little scared I'll get a worse unit.
What are your experiences with these issues?
Thanks for reading!
I had a perfect 16gb that I returned in order to get a 32gb. The 32gb had the horrible touch screen issues. Using YAMTT app, it would register multiple touches long after I was no longer touching the device. I returned it to Best Buy and got a new 32gb and it doesn't have the issues. At first I thought it was the JSS update, so I didn't accept for a few days. Went ahead and updated and still have no issues on my new device.
This has already been documented, the primary thread for this is over in the Q&A section AFAIK currently. Which is here:

I am basically having the same issue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2395289
A reboot seems to help mine. Mine does not seem as bad as some peoples. I am trying to decide if I need to exchange it or not. It sounds like it might be software more than a faulty one off hardware.
Mine seems completely fine outside of the occasional freak bug with finger-sliding on my keyboard pressing like 80 keys. Fixes itself if I lift my finger up.
I have a 32 GB.
Don't know where it is at the moment, but there is a thread over on the Google Products forums regarding this. Google knows of the issue, and as of a few days ago, they are looking into a fix. I think it's software. People say that the second upgrade you do ruins it and makes the touch less responsive. So, I think it will be fixed with a new update. Just give it some time. I'm trying not to think about it. Don't wanna ruin it for me. Hehe. Hang in there. If it REALLY bothers you, exchange it for another one. Obviously, you run the risk of not getting rid of the problem. Who knows.

I had this problem at first. I think it is just a heck of a lot more sensitive, interpreting varying pressure of my finger as movement as the "footprint" changes. After I got used to how lightly I should press compared to the previous Nexus, the problems went away.

Mine is working fine but i noticed when placing my hand on it when i use YAMTT, it will register 3-6 point and starts flipping. When i pull my hand away these points keep on flipping for some seconds. It is over responsive compared to my S2 which registers Zer0 points when i put my hand on it (the way it should be). This was happening with JSS15Q as well as JSS15R now.

Flashing one of sfhub's custom touchscreen fixes helps for most of the issues. I use ts20 and it works 98%. 2% of the time it just locks up/stops taking input for a second or two. I've only really noticed it when playing games (terraria).
ts10 worked well but would occasionally freak out with a bunch of inputs.
None of this would be noticeable outside of game playing.
Sfhubs fixes are pretty great. At least get it usable until Google figures it out.
I was hoping 15R update would have fixed this but still waiting.

Hi, I want to share my experience with a Nexus 7 2013 which bought to me a friend in USA (I'm from Spain).
It is made in China, June, and it has every touch problem described here: maps rotate, multi-touch with only 2 fingers, Swype keyboard problem (the draw was continuously cut off), the screen didn't recognize my finger, and sometimes ghost pulsations.
Well, I sent the tablet to the tech support and today is back.
The report says:
Problem: Touch Screen Function Error
Replaced part: LCD + Front + GPS module
Note the Gps module replaced which I didn't referred.
Now everything is ok and screen works without problems. And all of this with the J compilation.
Clearly, my experience indicates that the Nexus problem is a hardware problem, and Asus knows perfectly the problem.
Cheers.

What I don't understand is if that was the case there would be a lot of perfect ones out there. They should call for a recall if you have a certain date of the bad batches. This is how it should be done. If you bought it from Best Buy then best buy should be getting good batches for exchange. With reciepts still. I am over my 15 days now. 2nd of all I just don't believe that this is hardware. I had a perfect screen for 15 days then this update destroyed it. HMMMMMMM doesn't make sence. It is software issues thats going on.
I think what Asus is doing is recieving your Nexus 7 and istalling the proper drivers for the screen it has in it. The next update that comes out will destroy it again and again till you get tired of this crap.

I'm happy they fixed your touch screen issue, I'm thinking about having my n7 sent to be repaired too because ts10 helped a lot but it still doesn't feel 100% fixed.
Does your nexus feel solid and one piece like it did out of the box? I'm worried about having the screen feel like it could detach if they replace it.
I would like to see people start putting pictures of the paper work for this problem. Meaning the paper they send back with your tablet saying it is a defective screen or digitizer. Then we need to do something to get a replacement. Not sending it off. Exchanges at retail stores.
I have now the Q compilation with root and unlocked, and the touch screen is ok still. I don't see anything different to the original product (when I opened the box), but I think they exchange the screen and GPS, as they told me.

Hi! Thanks for the info, i might be sending my nexus 7 for replacement too.
Could you maybe try this app to check if the touchscreen problem persists? if it's not too troublesome for you of course! :good:

RMA'd mine for touch-screen issues. Getting it on Monday, will report my experience with it then. This post makes me optimistic that it will actually be fixed

I tested it already and the screen gets crazy. But I think this app is a fake, isn't it?
Certainly, my screen now respond without any problem, similar as in my Nexus 7 2012.

Dude, read the description! It is NOT test app. It is showing (simulates) bad touch so you can compare it with your device.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Please show me the sentence which is saying that. I am reading this desciption totaly different.

Bad news. The problems are back. I have discovered it with Swype keyboard, and confirmed with Maps and the app Paint Kids:

My happiness was for less than one week.
Bought mine a week ago. Worked perfect until i installed JSS15R yesterday, now im experiencing a touch freezes and random doubletaps

hmm, since the app creator figured out how to replicate the problem by simply displaying a certain image in fullscreen, so i was wondering if a replaced touchscreen would solve the problem. but i guess not..
Thanks for your help though!

I knew it. I found something out last night. Mine works perfect if its on a hard surface like a wooden table. If I put it on my couch or lay it on any cloth type material it has dead spots on typing. Mine is in a slimline Moko case. This is tested without holding it and unplugged. Touching the screen with one finger and hand only.Type real fast on each letter and they drop out touches.Like I said it works perfect now.

Shure it would help, but exchange for another better type of screen/toch combo :/
But i think cleaning an touching ang cleaning help.. mine is a lot better than it was on a first day (with a same ROM).
Cleaning a cache in my case Cruselite TPU with antistatic cleaner helped, too I think
Butt "some jittering remins" its hard to pickup icons to move "icons"... As nexus mean i move or tap the finger..

Take your Nexus 7 out of the case and lay it on a nice wooden hard surface and retest the screen. Mine works perfect on hard surfaces only.im thinking it could be the digitizer flexing or the wireless charging coils causing the problems.
The previous video was recorded before I sent the tablet. As it is shown it worked in a terrible way. Now is something subtle, because it only fails sometimes and mainly on hard surfaces.
It is strange, before to tech support it failed each second. Now, I can be swyping several minutes and it doesn't fail, and in other moment it fails 1 out of 10 words.
I will try to update to R compilation (I have the Q) and I will tell you.
Anyone had issues with random touches still after 4.4 update? I never had them on 4.3 but have had it twice now where the device does random things until I am forced to hold the power button to switch it off as the menu that comes up when you hold the power button can't be used because the touchscreen touches outside the box.

I'm also experiencing it.Randomly though. It doesn't appear when I type. It's frequent when I play Injustice,I can notice that my actions are not detected and when I try to power it off,I get stuck with the power off menu, same as you mentioned. My homescreen bobs between adjacent panes sometimes. Any known fix?

I had issues before and still afterwards
Particularly notice it whilst trying to type using swiftkey where you swipe across the keys - it seems to think I've lifted my finger when I haven't - very annoying!!

Same issue here. Sometimes a touch is not registered unless you hold it for a second.
Rebooting fixes it ... But I was wondering if someone is getting on the bottom of this?
Exact same issue here, I have to keep rebooting by long pressing power button to fix it temporarily. So damn annoying.

Plug your tablet via USB to either your computer or an outlet and do some typing. Does the problem go away? I saw someone mention on the forum a while ago about a possible grounding issue, something to do with hardware. Mine does go away. I have zero issues typing when my tablet is plugged in.
Same issue. I guess it is related to kit kat. I am running omnirom, and the reason I flashed it was because my nexus 7 starting spazzing out on me. I thought flashing a rom would fix it, but it did not. What I do it enable show touches in developer options to see where the screen is touching. Then I swipe the entire screen row after row especially the point(s) where it detects the touches that you did not make. Just touch every area of the screen, and it went away, for a little bit at least.
Mine touch problem worsened after kitkat. Not recognising touch At all while lying on the table, to ghost touches to, missing touch it's having all. Though I still love my nexus but it has made the experience bitter sweet

Happens on my Nexus 7 2013 with stock 4.3.
I tested my screen when I first got it with no problems, after updating to 4.4.2. There was one time where it wouldn't register any taps, but problem was fixed after reboot.
My Nexus is still wrapped in its original plastic cover. I have used it very little, and have not noticed any screen mis-clicks or whatever. Are there any guaranteed steps to reproduce the problem ?

just using it, download a multi touch testing problem and place 2 fingers (imagining a grid) one on top of the other or horizontally, if it doesn't happen quickly, give it a few minutes without shutting off the screen and try again...
I sent mine for warranty and ASUS lost it... so I'm just gonna get my money back, dealing with them with the BBB
Mine actually improved drastically with kit Kat. I now get nearly flawless touchscreen response. The one or two times it has happened since, simply locking and unlocking the device resolves the issue.

Have downloaded a multutouch application and have tried it until I got bored. It seems that it detected correctly where my fingertips where, one, two or three at the same time and moving all the time.
I had it disconnected from the USB and laying on the couch, seemed to work OK.
Maybe it is the plastic wrapper making it all work OK?
I had zero touch issues when I first got mine (did 10mins of multi-touch testing with app), after the recent 4.4.2 update, I was getting erratic/missed touches. Multi-touch app confirmed the same, 8 fingers on the screen, it jumped from 8 all the way down to 2 touch readings. A little digging around and I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428133
I tried it out and fixed my touch issues. Give it a try.
I reconnected the touchscreen connector, after that most touch issues were gone except for a rare occasion when I still get ghost touches. Tap sensitivity (typing) is so much better now, it used to be nearly impossible

I went thru 3 of them all had the same issue with the touchscreen not being properly responsive and it corrected when the USB cable was connected (tried all 3 with JB and KK saw no change). Its obvious there are grounding issues with this product and It looks like Nexus doesn't really care; which is really disappointing since my first gen has performed flawlessly. Looks like I'll keep the original and start looking into some other brands.

Yes, I have touchscreen problem noticeable after updated to kitkat.
Did anyone try to play jelly splash on nexus 7?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wooga.jelly_splash
This game works awfully on my nexus 7 as the connected line broke prematurely when my finger never left the touchscreen at all.
Anyone face same problem with the game as me?

fixing it yourself is really easy, it takes 5 minutes and breaks no seals, so no warranty problems
