Should I get a 540 as festival phone? - GT540 Optimus General

Hello, I I am going to Roskilde festival in Denmark next week, and I need a copy a cheap phone, as my Galaxy Nexus is too expensive to bring :/
Would the 540 be a good choice? How is the screen, the battery time and the speed of the phone? What version of android can it be upgraded to (any stable custom Roms?). My biggest concern is the resistive screen :/ How about flash in browser? Is multi touch supported?
The other phone I am looking at is Vodafone 828

Flash? --> No.
Multi-touch?--> No.
Custom Rom?--> 2.1 , 2.2 , 2.3 , 4.0
Battery life?--> Better then the nexus for sure (even better then my sgs2)
This phone is good for calls and sms. If you are coming from a nexus browsing will be a big headache due to the shear difference in web page loading times.

It should be fine as a cheap replacement, battery life is good, phone itself is pretty solid. Resistive screen is fine unless you'll mess with custom roms as these doesn't have screen working calibration which makes operating on the device without stylus pretty difficult. Performance on on the stock 2.1 is rather decent, browsing experience is rather poor on it, gaming and system responsiveness are fine. The situation does change when you're using custom roms ( especially those with .32 and .35 kernels ) but you'll lose screen calibration. You won't notice much difference in browsing between your nexus and gt540 if you'll use .35 kernel and OC. There are two almost perfect custom roms ( with .32 and .35 kernels ) In other words gt540 may not be perfect but it will be definitely better than vodafone 858, unless you want phone only for texting and calling.

You will definitely !

if your on custom rom you'll never get perfect stabilty. from time to time it will lag a bit but for a few days a custom GT540 might be ok.
If you really choose it you will have to take your time to get it from 1.6/2.1 to e.g 2.3 with adequate kernel

Hell yeh if i ever make a vid comparing browsing speeds you will tell!

I tested almost all customs roms, some of them for few months or more and i didn't experienced any lags and problems ( miroslav lewa os, sdsl v2.1 ). If you can't take care of your rom even stock rom will lag and pose problems.

sdsl 2.1 is good

u have to re-size system partition and have a swap partition the phone will work flawlessly i get a charge of 2 days using complete WiFi

Of course it's, im having like 30 apps installed on my phone now ( SDSL v2.1 with .3 5 kernel ) and everything works fine. The problem's that most of the people doesn't even bother to resize system partition size or do a full wipe. Installed apps are not a problem, the ones that are running in the background all the time, taking cpu time, memory and killing battery ( load of various widgets and other useless stuff, launchers that are heavy on memory / cpu and such ) 90 % of people problem with certain custom roms would be solved by just reading properly, that's the truth. Unless you can explain how i managed to get SDSL v2.1 to work with .35 kernel ( and other roms as well ) while others can't. That's enough of an offtopic, i'm sure OP does know his answer now.

i know we dont need to resize system partition but i had partitioned it for miroslavs ics and kept it like that since i had 256mb swap

How is the screen to use on this phone? I have almost no nails, so I am afraid of the resitive screen :/

If you're afraid of the screen, you can always get some cheap stylus or make it yourself ( from a pen ) and it will be fine.

I think screen responsiveness it's a lot better on miroslav ICS than on previous roms. On GB I had to push very hard on the screen or it won't catch the touch.

Post you 2.3.3 reviews HERE (and nothing else)

It is very irritating to see every single 2.3.3 theme spammed with:
*where is the link? how to install it? you stink give us ROM now! Why is my screen al red? Why is my mother making me pay for my COOKED diner...*
So I've imagined this thread REVIEW ONLY. So post your reviews, no questions, no comments. We can open another thread questions/comments for this thread.
So I've tought some guidelines for reviews that everyone is asking, having problem with or just wish to know:
What doesn't work? (some people mentioned accelerometers, animations)
How did you install it? (give simple explanation, method you used, with or without bootloaders, etc)
Are there any problems so far? (beside if something is not working, FC-s, app incompability, etc)
General performances? (how fast is the rom, compare it with ROM you used before)
GPS? (no explanation necessary...)
Battery life? (ompare it with ROM you used before, what is the magnitude of battery drain?
Anything else.
I hope this thread is well accepted, I truly believe it is the best way to get all data everyone needs.
Thanx, CROrION
flashed stock + jvk bootloaders + speedmod k13d with heimdall
went into recovery and flashed the rom kitchen beta
then without rebooting rooted in cwm recovery
rebooted.
3D does not work properly
Browser is nicer
Smoother/faster
Theme is a little different
Other minor things I forget
This rom is still beta, samsung would be stupid to release it publicly
What doesn't work? (some people mentioned accelerometers, animations)
Nothing detected. Screen off old-TV-like animation is just a missing feature, removed by Samsung, not a bug.
How did you install it? (give simple explanation, method you used, with or without bootloaders, etc)
Odin + 502.pit + repartition (bootloader upgraded)
Are there any problems so far? Lower WiFi sensitivity/range than in JPY 2.2.1 stock ROM, probably new modem uses lower power to save battery at the cost of range.
General performances? (how fast is the rom, compare it with ROM you used before)
Fastest ever, some minor lags when installing multiple apps from the market, but acceptable.
GPS? (no explanation necessary...)
OK, as good as latest 2.2.1 stock roms
Battery life? (ompare it with ROM you used before, what is the magnitude of battery drain?
Battery life has never been better (only option changed: WiFi Sleep Policy, pure stock rom).
Anything else.
I installed it yesterday with 512 pit file and its ok its faster than js8 in my opinion and bit ram hungry still but not as much as jv1 was useing tottaly stock no mods and quite happy i expect it has disapounted many as it still looks likes froyo also had bit lag in gallery had no fc or major issues seems stable and useable thanks samsung

For now, fastest ROM ever. No lags detected. Top bar is green-gray, looks better than in older version of GB. I've installed using odin, pit 512 and repartition.
3D Not Working Properly
No Ad Hoc Wifi Support
Still Lags
Many Apps gives force close
---
2.2/ 2.2.1 is still better than this
Battery life is great ! Only had 2% in 8 hours.
Really smooth and lagfree (even before the hacked kernel from supercurio)
Like this ROM and will keep it for now
10 charrrr
What doesn't work? (some people mentioned accelerometers, animations)
- Everything Working accelerometer etc...just Gameloft Nova shows white screen, rest of all Gameloft 3D games RF2011,SC, MC2, BIA, Asphalt6 & many more (10+) works perfectly & better than any froyo. Could not install angry birds from market had to unmount ext SD, install & remount again. This way it works fine...
How did you install it? (give simple explanation, method you used, with or without bootloaders, etc)
- Odin + 512.pit + repartition (bootloader upgraded sbl version) + check bootloader upgrade in odin
Are there any problems so far? Lower WiFi sensitivity/range than in JPY 2.2.1 stock
- probably new modem uses lower power to save battery at the cost of range since wifi signal is slightly weaker but everything runs fine so no big deal.
General performances? (how fast is the rom, compare it with ROM you used before)
- Fastest ever, some minor lags when installing multiple apps from the market, but acceptable. So far its been 12 hours....not a single FC or problem, already installed like 40 apps from market....
GPS? (no explanation necessary...)
- As good as latest 2.2.1 stock roms
Battery life? (ompare it with ROM you used before, what is the magnitude of battery drain?
- Battery life has never been better (only option changed: WiFi Sleep Policy to sleep when screen off, pure stock rom).

[Q] Is your G3 reliable?

Is your G3 a reliable phone? All of us on XDA have superduper custom ROMs and OC kernels and what not, it's all really great and I'm thankfull to the developers for that. But, it seems it makes the phone so very unreliable. It happened to me 100 times that I need to make a very important call and the phone just starts laging or freezes. Today it happened to me twice, once I had to call my friend and the other time I was expecting a call. Both of the times the phone freezed. Don't get me wrong, I can call anyone at anytime and talk for hours but in case of emergency it seems that the phone would melt in my hands. It's not just about calling but thats what you mostly need if something important arises.
After i flash a new rom, everything is nice and smooth but after some time, the phone is not that responsive. It depends on the rom and/or kernel, it may take a few days (like now in my case) or a few months. I must say that i didn't have any problems with CM7 A4, even after months of usage, but then i got bored of some stuff not working and then I flashed Speed rom base, after three days the phone was unreliable. It may be the different filesystems, when i changed to ext2/4/2 the phone seemed less responsive than before. Now I changed back to RFS to see if it makes any difference.
well, speedmod base was just a base, you should flash v1.0 on it via recovery...
and this responsiveness and freezing is mostly because of the kernel...tell me which kernel are you on??
@kacipeder
I keep a spare phone

Speedmod base is just what i need, v1.0 extreme has some apps and features that i don't need or have downloaded allready. I don't need LW, 5 Lockscreen etc.
I'm using g3mod performance kernel, fequency at 760 performance, screen lock 190-570 ondemand, and some battery specific profiles. I think the problem is in filesystems, yesterday i switched back to all RFS from ext2/4/2. Phone was faster immediately, especialy after unlocking, runs better with low frequncy like 380mhz. I'm sure that it's not placebo because i noticed small lag when i first switched to ext2/4/2. The problem is in data/ext4. Ext4 uses more CPU because it has some journaling, safety mesures and stuff and since our G3 has low CPU power, it makes it lag, very noticable with low CPU freq.. Ext4 is supposed to remove lags but I think it adds lags on some devices, including G3. So, if RFS gives you lags (not to me) use all partitions to ext2.
My back button does not work randomly, been down to service centre 3 times in 3 weeks and its still not fixed

Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
mine is realy reliable I have had some problems with some roms (not mentioning names) but now I have no problems, if you want very stable go for a stock rom or try lower OC like fugumod 2.4 beta3 800mhz or g3mod performance kernel at 950 mhz. also make sure to set up some profiles and use performance for optimal use it drains battery faster dough but with profiles it should be no problem
I am on my own ROM now based on DTLKDA. take a look here but there are some other good roms out there.
Hope I helped
ps: DTLKDA is the most stable ROM out there download link :DTLKDA password is: samfirmware.com
DTLKDA is the most stable rom? How do you know? Too bad its for the US, i like croatian on my phone. I did a small test today. I converted all partitions to ext4, immediatly after boot the phone was lagish, it freezed in minutes then launcher pro stopped responding. So this is the proof that ext4 is no good for our device. I switched back to RFS, tomorow I will do the test with ext2, but I doubt there will be any difference when compared to RFS
Try destiny 1.3 rom (oc, no uv). Its rock sollid on my g3!

advantage of cyanogenmod

Soon Samsung will stop updating the galaxy s so should i install cyanogenmod 7 now or wait till the stop supporting it ...is it easy to install from gingerbread jvq I've looked at the instructions but didn't understand how to do it and is every thing working on the phone with cyanogenmod
Everything is included but the CyanogenMod for I9000 is still an unstable version. FM radio oes not work and there is a feww bug here and there.
To install it, you need to revert back to a Froyo firmware which include a bootloader because the Gingerbread bootloader is not compatible entirely with CyanogenMod. Then, you root your phone, install ClockWorkMod or any kernel that has it, download the ROM, put it in the SD Card, restart the phone in recovery, then install zip from SD Card, choose the Rom Zip file and everything should install correctly.
Here is a link to the whole process LINK
Don't forget to backup your apps, and other relevant information and more important, make a backup of your EFS folder in case your IMEI is screwed up during the upgrade.
You will need to flash back to a ROM with Froyo Bootloaders first, but the installation is now very, very easy....use my guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101534
As for the advantages, CM7 is the fastest and smoothest ROM available, with a high level of customization, some exceptional features like the Theme Chooser, and a very active development and user community.
The disadvantages are that the battery life usually tops out at about a day and a half between charges max, and certain hardware features don't work as well as they should, due to the fact Samsung won't release their sources. These include the 780p video camera (lower resolution films fine), FM Radio and TV Out.
IN the end, the only way to really know if CM7 is for you is to try it out and see. Some users ultimately say they prefer the Samsung ROMS while others, like myself, are addicted to the high performance and tweaks of CM7 (as well as the community).
Come by the CM7 thread in the Dev forum, read back a few pages to see what is going on and join the discussions.
Having CM7 on SGS is like owning a Ford GT40. Beatiful and powerful beast, but if you actually dare to use it, it'll probably break down or you run out of juice in the middle of nowhere.

Thats a great way of putting it
Made me laugh, There is an ounce of truth in there !!
Still a good ROM tho, a mega improvement over stock samsung roms at least.
Battery life for me is pretty much the same as stock, the performance is unrivalled and it has more functionality. For me it also more stable than 2.3.4 ROMs which have all kinds of dodgy bugs and random lags.
The battery life has been improved a lot in CyanogenMod, but it is still a bit high when using packet data.

It is as stable, or more stable, than any other ROM for this phone...
I dont find significant speed difference for Samsung JVQ, but it is more configurable, very usefull bits too, and it has the nicest theme, Honeycream, for someone that doesnt like green or blue themes...
The dialer and the camera apps are garbagge compared with samsung' s, but you can use the market like I did, got RocketDial and Camera360...
And you get a new version almost every night, good if you have nothing better to do then flashing the phone , plus they fix small errors and implement new features, Samsung is not doing that for the SGS any more...
EDIT battery is not a problem anymore...

[Q] What rom shall i Install?

I know there's many threads like this already, but as there's new roms and soft mods being made I thought i'd make my own. So i'm going on holiday In around two weeks, and i need a stable rom to keep me going. I'm going for 2months, and probably won't have internet access for the most part.
There's a few things I'm looking for:
- Decent battery life
- Decent free ram
- ^ Good enough for some games when I'm bored.
- Somewhat stable
- Gingerbread*
- Fast and smooth
- Good enough to make clear calls
That's about it, I'm curectly using ICM cm9 by miroslavv (sorry I forgot the exact name), But I guessing I should go use a more stable ROM.
Thanks in advance.
I was also wondering if i got a new digitaliser, would it sort out the calibration problem? (I''ve read that it does)...

-2.3.7 GB CM 7.2

X8 performance

My X8 runned on GDX every since the v12-13 came out til now, and i was experiencing random boots and freezes every while. (was on dx's LinuxDX then transfered to Alfs (all up to date)), and i decided to try new ROM.
I put on miniCM9 with nAa latest kernel and gave it a shot.
Same thing. I installed it 3 hours ago, already had a random reboot, and performance is awful, freezes, stopped responding apps...
I overclocked to every single value, tried every governor, did swap, KSM, u name it i tried it...
How to fix this? I thought everyone was experinceing that :/
Suggestions?
(Sry 4 bad english)
How much did u overclocked to?

Thats not a problem, most of the time i stayed at 600-691 high, i tried to go higher but even worse. If there are problems at 600, i dont think its the processor... (my guess)
Install any lighter rom, cm7 or cm6.
Try shin engine rom, even very powerful and faster in stock kernel

I'm using MiniCM9 for 3 days (or more?) now. the ROM was extremely lag at the first time I got it installed. then I overclock the CPU to 806Mhz +128MB swap + AMM + Greenify. these makes my phone flying(just metaphors lol) and imma keep this running until I switch to other JB ROM.
Maybe it runs fast but not that fast like froyo. Android 4 and up is designed for better phones, every app is much more heavier than on for example froyo. Froyo with custom kernel is really flying on this phone. App like phone, sms, settings starts in less than 2 sec - this is impossible on ics, jb. Next thing which is really annoying on 4.1 that it can't be used with one finger (no zoom buttons) and fake dt causes errors on new kernel. Music works really bad on 4.1, sound has lower quality, and music is very laggy. It has lag every time you try to wake up screen, back to home etc.

what jb kernel/rom are you talking about? while i agree that froyopro is faster (it is froyo), naa's jb rom is far from what you described. i don't experience sleep of death anymore. sound quality is the same (it's more of a hardware thing although there are some tweaks to improve it by a little), and i'm using playerpro not the default app and it though it doesn't start as fast as froyopro the difference at most is a second. apps you mention start in 2 secs on jb. fake dt is fixable by using dx's module instead of the default. on top of that i have tsf shell on my x8 with jb and smart launcher on my x8 with froyopro. 90 apps in all. i've beem using minicm10 since naa first released it. and i've also tried daveee's jb rom which is quite good.
froyopro (i prefer froyobread tbh) may be faster, but jb roms aren't as horrible as you make them out to be.
Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.
I know, I was using fake dt by dx but it causing errors. In some games when you touch by two fingers it's getting force close Ok, apps starts in 2 sec but only if you haven't got any cached apps. Music (I can live with lower quality) is laggy, it makes my very angry. Next thing is that you shouldn't use heavy apps with background processes because it slows down phone. I need some apps like maps or facebook messenger. I know about Greenify but that isn't a point. I'm using liveview - it is bluetooth watch, it need to have a few processes in background. Connection on jb is unstable when you try to do something on phone (exacly as on eclair).
I don't know, maybe my x8 don't like jelly beans
point taken. probably the biggest factor that causes us different experiences with jb roms are the apps we have and use. i don't use greenify either. i don't use task killers at all. well, different people have different needs. my x8 likes beans though. and we're way off topic.
@op: have you tried a clean flash? maybe even reflash kernel?
Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.
@cascabel
you're right !! there are lots of JB roms, but some of them good for daily use.. JB roms need to tweak the build.prop a little bit..
i run MiniCM10 with high performance(ofcoursethebatterywon'tholdlong) tweaking=boostperformance...
I tried almost everything, reflashing too, i only dont have random reboots and freezes on stock
day two on cm9, its been better than the early start but still horrible :/
I could try cm10 and see if my X8 likes jb, if dont, hello froyopro...
P.S: I think cell signal can be problem. My signal is constantly weak, every once in a while signal kinda disables itself (no signal) then it stays for a couple of seconds that way, then goes back to 3-4 bars 8at home). When i talk on mobile with someone, every couple of minutes im getting kicked out of call, because of that signal fail....
I dunno if that is case with stock rom, cause i havent been on him much ...
Thoughts?
i believe it is the carrier's problem my friend, you are being disconnected because the one's you are calling have no signal
plus, every while i have to write pin code on and one because cellfhone kinda restartes, not fully, just freezes in browser for example, stays at that for about of minute and returns to lockscreen with asking me to put on a pin code. So thats a celling problem i guess.
Also, thats an issue with wifi too, keeps restarting every 5-10 minutes, depends on distance between me and router, and that cell and wifi signal, when they are low/no signal, restarting, my phone is kinda strugling and that causes freezing, blocking, restarting (x8 is not very powerfull to keep strugling so it kinda restarts). I thought its a ram problem, but on alfs thats not the case, (im not sure for nAa) so it has to be something else. I hope I found it..
Dayum, im awesome
Tnx everyone
Firstly when you said you were running CM9 with the "latest naa kernel", did you mean 2.6.32.6 or 2.6.29.6? Because that can make a huge difference.
Just use ES Task Manager and disabled app that you do not want to use it..
by using the startup manager setting to enabled or disabled app..

then simply remove the app you're not using. we've been through countless task manager/killer apps discussions it's not funny anymore.
