Android 4.0 ICS on Transformer (updatable)

As i have been reading on asus.com, our transformer can already update to 4.0 ics?!
You might want to check treir speccs of our transformer:

Asus made a comment that by the end of the year the transformer would get an update to ics...I think that they are just telling you when available you will get ics

It says "upgradeable" on the item description, if you check the download section Honeycomb 3.2.1 as below is available.
V8.6.5.13 Only for US SKU (Android 3.2.1)
It's available for multiple SKU, not just US.
It's dated 19 October 2011 so it's quite recent. When they'll have ICS up only they know for sure.

Yes it has the capability to upgrade to ICS when it is available. That doesn't mean today.

Sales pitch, like the Xoom was upgradable from 3g to LTE.

Upgradable does not always means u can upgrade now, it means aslo it is able to be upgraded to 4.0
thats the point, case closed, (and if it says upgradeable its only for testers)

I'll be honest and say that the Asus Transformer was not something that appealed to me but with the announced specs of the Transformer 2, it has really got me excited. One thing that is really important is the update support from Asus. From what I can gather, it seems like Asus are pretty on the ball with releasing timely updates for the Transformer? Is this really true? The fact that it seems like ICS will be released on the original Transformer is a great confidence booster.
Comments/Suggestions all welcome.

ASUS has been the best, bar none, at updating their Android tablet. Samsung still hasn't updated the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to 3.2, for example, although they've announced that ICS will be coming to it someday. This is just one reason why I've become a huge ASUS fan since buying my Transformer.

That's very encouraging. However, I'm not a massive early adopter so I'll probably wait for some decent reviews and for Asus to release ICS update before I take the plunge. I really want a tablet that can run Android buttery smooth and really think the TF2 is the one.

Please, less threads on the ICS update...

It already runs buttery smoothe. Much better than anything else I've used with android. If you want to save money I would get the first one. If money isn't an issue I would definitely wait and grab the Prime. The other tablets are jokes compared to these.

Well that is certainly reassuring. I was thinking of getting the TF101 (people told me to wait for the Prime, but I thought the hardware on the TF101 is fine). As long as the TF101 runs ICS without a hick I'll be happy. ICS is designed for dual core processors, right?

Price is not my primary concern but video play back is as that is what I will be mainly using it for. The tegra2 chips are all really poor for video decoding which is why I haven't invested in a tablet yet. The Asus prime and Toshiba excite are the only tablets that I know (coming out before xmas) that have a better chip than the tegra2 for video decoding. Both are really sexy and seem worth spending the extra on over current cheaper tablets. I guess I'll find out for sure when tjd tablets are properly released and reviews start trickling down.

As far as dual core goes I'm unsure what ics is doing. All I know is honeycomb runs great so if ics runs better I'll be stoked.

i thought prime should be released with ICS

I agree! Too many ICS update and ICS Port(s) threads! I work in Western Australia's mining boom so I'm cash rich but time poor (for how long, is a crash coming?). I seem to spend hours reading these threads, enjoyable though they are,
What I need is either a way for the XDA system or a human being to alert me when a "mostly" working port (ICS Port release candidate?) or Upgrade (for field testing) is available. I have 5 Android devices atm so if a beta release has problems on one of them, I'll still be able to stay in contact with the developers any of the others.
Maybe a technical report whenever there's real progress for which I would pay, specially if it gets written up in somewhere like India where English skills are high, and the exchange rate is good (about 50 Rupees to the dollar atm!)
Find a few more customers like me, live in a place with low cost of living, and you've got yourself a viable business, it would seem.
Hint I have receive pm set up for xda.

I'm gonna wait to upgrade until I see how the new Samsung is with it's high res display tablet next year. Also what iPad 3 will be like.

OK, that's it. I am officially sick of hearing about Ice Cream Sandwich.
Or, more to the point, I am sick of not hearing about it, and seeing the same thing posted over and over again and old threads being bumped for no good reason.

CM 9 Progress Update
We’ve been hard at work on CM9 since Google released Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) into the wild last month, and things are slowly starting to come together. Google did a great job with ICS and added some really awesome features which in some cases replace or deprecate functionality that we had in CM7, so we are reevaluating all of our customizations. A number of devices are already up and running with CM9, and the focus is currently on getting as many devices ready as we can. The first devices (besides the Nexus S, which you can already get from Koush’s section on ROM Manager) that we’ll have ready will mostly likely be devices based on OMAP4, MSM8660/7X30, and Exynos. We also have some Tegra2 tablets in the pipeline such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Transformer. Our goal is to provide continued support to all CM7 devices back to the QSD8250 series of devices such as the Nexus One. I don’t want to make any promises at this time, but that is the plan. And sorry Droid1 owners, we’re dropping support for you. Time to upgrade
There are a number of challenges that we are up against. Google has made some pretty major changes to the Android framework that break compatibility with older proprietary camera and graphics drivers in order to achieve some pretty insane performance, but I am confident that the team will be able to overcome these issues like we have in the past.
For those of you who like to build CM from source yourself, you probably know that the spin-up time when starting a CM7 build is absurdly long due to the high number of devices in our repository. Koush and Arcee have put together a solution to this problem that adds new devices on-demand to your local repository, saving on both bandwidth and the long startup time. Some other great enhancements are coming too, like a completely overhauled music app, a new file manager, and a new launcher based on stock 4.0.
If you have a Nexus S, you can check out the code and build for yourself today. More devices are on the way, and I’ll send out these status updates as we make more progress

Exactly what I was thinking. I love Prime and the work roach has been doing, but when I can get CM on the tablet, I will go running.

what's the advantage of CM vs Prime rom ?

Its Vanilla ICS. Most stable best battery life and best performance.
You have to try it to actually realize the differance. Which is like day and night

It shouldn't be that shocking, the tablet sold *really* well. Xoom, GTab 10.1, and TF were basically the honeycomb tablets.

the guys from Xiaomi (company behind MIUI roms) allready working on MIUI build on ICS so once they release first ICS MIUI it should not take long till we will see our first MIUI rom for TF

It'll be interesting to see what the difference is. CM is usually better than stock firmware sure so being as lean and cut-back as possible while still adding in extremely useful features.
Asus have done a great job of keeping their firmware bloat-free though, so it may not be too different, performance-wise. The biggest advantage will probably come from extended support. Asus probably won't upgrade the TF101 past 4.0 - having CM pretty much ensures that it will get every version of Android in the future so long as somebody is interested in getting it running.

A lot of the "bloat" Asus has added is incredibly useful. Polaris Office is really nice, and unavailable if Asus didn't include it. Same with Supernote, which is pretty good for free. Splashtop, again, expensive software included for free.
The **** I hate is them bundling things like Netflix... it's freely available on the market, and only available in select regions, why on earth would you bundle that?

Prospects for Jelly Bean on the Xoom?

So...today Jelly Bean was accidentally outed on the Google Play Store as Android 4.1. If you added a Galaxy Nexus to your cart, the line item read "Soon to be the first phone with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean"
Obviously we are all expecting the new Nexus tablet to be unveiled at Google I/O. With that in mind, adding to it the fact that the VZW Xoom will reach 18 months in August and the WiFi Xoom in October, what say ye? Do we stand a chance of getting Jelly Bean on the Xoom?
I personally say yes since JB is just a point release. I'm sure WiFi will get it first followed by VZW a month or two later. If the Xoom gets JB however, I would be shocked if it received the next major release (5.0).

Unless Google changes something dramatically like they did from Gingerbread/honeycomb to ICS, I would think the community will be able to get it running quite easily. However, I'm doubting anything farther than 4.1 will be official.

I think the chances of officialness is fairly decent, and even still, it'll be open source and the Xoom specs are still decent, it won't be hard to get it running. I even think the the next update could be official. HTC still give official updates the the Desire HD (Inspire 4G I think) and that's over 2 years old but still a decent device

Xoom WIFI hopefully will be updated. It has received updates in a timely matter. If not the community will address the update.

I'm talking about the US version, where the Xoom runs stock ICS and gets updates straight from Google. The international versions have Motorola customizations and obviously, updates come from Motorola rather than Google. You guys are probably screwed.

So happen I still have my xoom... Jelly is coming in July... I can't wait....

Who cares about what Motorola does? We have some awesome developers who fixed ICS to us european users.

Forget ICS! Jelly Bean is looking very impressive! Love the offline Voice to Text function. And the Voice Google Search is really nice.
Google+ for tablets today and Jelly Bean in a few weeks. Exciting day for my Xoom.

So, one thing that didn't seem clear... the Nexus 7 is obviously designed to be held like a phone (portrait mode)... so the decision to still have it default to a tablet like interface in apps (larger screen) yet still retain the phone like UI layout makes sense... But what about for landscape style 10 inch tablets like the Xoom? Are we going to see the honeycomb like interface disappear and be replaced with the jelly bean launcher at the bottom / notification bar at the top?

That would be a mistake. I use the Xoom with almost entirely widgets. The large screen is conducive to quickly scanning content in widgets. Mail, News Reader, Calender, etc. without even opening the app.
But that new Google+ for tablets is definitely landscape mode.

I think it would be a mistake too... but it seems they are trying to unify the interface between the two even more... I hope not...

Clearly you don't get it. The original Xoom is a Google Experience Device in the USA. It's like a Nexus tablet without carrying the Nexus name. It runs stock Android and updates come from Google. The Xoom 2 is NOT a Google Experience device, therefore it runs a customized firmware done by Motorola and updated by Motorola.
You're comparing apples to trucks.
The U.S. WiFi-only and Verizon 3/4G Xoom models will get Jelly Bean. As for international Xooms, who knows. The Xoom 2 isn't part of this discussion.

Jelly Bean for TF101 Confirmed

Update: Asus Germany denies that their colleagues from the Netherlands have made such a statement about TF101/SL101, adding that they only confirmed Android 4.1 upgrade for TF201/TF300/TF700 tablets and that it is just pure speculation. According to their current information TF101 and SL101 users will enjoy Android 4.1 upgrade too. Here’s the whole statement made by Asus Germany on their Facebook page.

Pretty Amazing. An Alpha-1 release, and the biggest problem right now appears to be the camera.

Have you actually used Jelly Bean? Performance is fantastic, Project Butter really makes everything so smooth. That is a very significant feature for me, and I'm sure it is for a lot of other people.

Yeah he's used Jelly Bean... he has a Galaxy Nexus and so do I but I totally disagree with player911.
Jelly Bean is more of a 'behind the scenes' optimized version of Android. Project Butter is HUGE, although it may not look like so but the overall responsiveness of Android OS is SUPERB and I have a feeling that this is just the beginning. When comparing ICS to JB, it is absolutely night and day difference.
Can't wait for a finalized ROM with all the features we love in a bug free ROM

i installed team eos jb rom. while it does much smoother then ics, it's not stutter free. low frame rate occurred when you happened to run active running process in the background. but it is huge improvement compared to ics. now with live wallpaper, sliding between home screen is still very smooth.

I was just getting ready to post that also as I just saw it on FB. Glad the Tegra 3 devices are getting it. I hope they decide to bring it to the Tegra 2 devices also, since I own one of them. If not, then I'll wait for the devs and custom JB roms.

I don't have a transformer, but I'll second that. "Project butter" makes it sound gimmicky, but It really is a significant difference.

I installed the Cyangenmod 10.0 Preview yesterday and was very surprised by how smooth it was already. I am yet to have a FC on the rom, not to say one will not come.

I really hope Android 5 has the same or less hardware requirements than 4.xx. They (Google) have gone overboard with android 4 and it now takes a dual core and 1 GB RAM to have a good experience, which is comparable to a desktop OS requirements (windows XP/7/8). This is crazy.There are still low cost low spec single core 512MB RAM touch devices in production. If Android 5 is another step up in system requirements, the fragmentation problem will only get worse.
Having said that, there should be no reason why the TF300 doesn't get an Android 5 update, unless it's ASUS policy to turn the device obsolete in order to sell something new. In that case, the warranty will have expired and we will have good reason to unlock the device and install whatever latest custom ROMs we want.
btw... it's a pity the original TF101 pad is not in the JB 4.1/4.2 game.

im saying this because android 4.1 and 4.2 were not a big step in android os .. so asus must release the android 5 for the device ..
of course there is not any info about android 5 but i thought its better to start a topic like this :-/

Well, I'd like to think Android "5" is going to be 4.3 last time they announced a new version 4.2 was going to be "5". Pretty sure 4.1 was also supposed to be 5. It won't be that big of an update and we may get it.

Well, I'd like to think Android "5" is going to be 4.3 last time they announced a new version 4.2 was going to be "5". Pretty sure 4.1 was also supposed to be 5. It won't be that big of an update and we may get it.

It is to my understanding that Key Lime Pie is suppose to be a large leap for Android, but at the same time, ICS to JB was too, so who knows. Trying to scrape up some info for the Motorola X, a phone that is suppose to be directly designed and set up by Google themselves (after all they own Motorola now) and will be the first Key Lime device is suppose to have some great tech that previous phones couldn't do, however it could be all a bend of truth to make it look like it is Android 5's abilities, when it may just be newer hardware tech itself. August is the "word" but who knows, will have to see. As for our TF300 variants, unlikely, ASUS will want us to buy a new tablet... probably when they get the Tegra 4's going mainstream and not just on NVidia dev.

Let's not forget that our device is very similar with nexus 7 , which will receive it for sure
Just take a look at samsung: there have been so many updates for sgs 1 , from 2.1 to 2.3.6 (not to mention that jb works far better than original firmware )
Be more optimistic guys

our device is NOT that similar to the nexus 7.. seriously man you think just cause they are both tegra 3 they are similar?? they have different hardware and COMPLETELY DIFFERENT versions of android. no we will probably will not get android 5.
Also, most recent rumors suggest that 4.3 (jb) will be released at google I/O NOT android 5. sadly it seems android 5 will be delayed

officially or not we will have it ... it doesn't matter if is CyanogenMod or ASUS ... or maybe Ubuntu will be stable enough for our beloved tab
