I simply can't figure this out. I have an A500 that I have rooted successfully back a few months ago and installed HoneyVillain 1.04 ROM. It has worked flawlessly for months. Now I can't get root access with Titanium BU, BusyBox, Root Explorer or anything! I've tried re-rooting it using GingerBreak 1.2 with no success. I can access a backup that I made right after I rooted a few months ago, but that doesn't bring back root either. Can someone please tell me what to do before I make a 10.1" frisbee out of this thing. The tab's batery has been allowed to go completely dead once, but I don't think that would be the problem. I'd like to install the latest version of HoneyVillain if I can get root back. I sincerely appreciate anyone's help.
Sounds weird. You hadn't flashed anything else had you or installed a system update?
What's your kernel version & build number?
Have you tried using IconiaRoot?

Did you by chance do a restore using cwm..? Every time I did a full restore I would loose root.
I haven't flashed anything and no system update. I'm about to try IconiaRoot 1.3. Still looking for the answer...I'll report back. Thanks!
I tried Iconia Root. It goes through the steps and says Done...Have Fun! Then a message says Iconia Root has been denied root privileges. I tried to unroot and it says something went wrong and I'm still rooted. I must be somewhere between rooted and unrooted! What now????

Well, you're right - it did work. I didn't even have to root again. Everything is back after the reflash of the ROM. Now tell me the full story. I'm wanting (I think) to try the latest HoneyVillain ROM.
By the way, thank you VERY much for you help.

You must not have wiped anything...? (Not that that is bad just more tech info for me), still learning.
Anyway, I have used honey vill and taboonay many version and with different kernals and love both roms.
What happans to me is I use cwm after I get the tab set the way I want and then do a full backup using cwm. Then I always want to fire test my backups so I immediately do a full restore using cwm, soon after I start getting denials from super user..? And after checking using a app from the market to check root, I have now lost root and can't get back, same as you.
I now just reflash the rom and if I do full wipe I reroot and all is well.
So I went with a different rom, backup and immediately do full restore and now no root again.
It happaned with every rom I have tried. Someone told me to delete the android.secure.image folder from the backup set that cwm makes. I tried that and that did let the restore, restore the flex rom folder but had the same problem. I have two a500 and both do this. I don' t know if stock rooted will do this as I have not tried yet. So what good is a full backup if it fudges your system. Maybe someone has a answer, but I have not found one. Sorry if this ain't your problem at all, but might be related. Later

That's amazing. I want to move up to the new HoneyVillain, so I guess I can count on rooting again? Wow. I love my Iconia though. I just remembered that I recently had trouble with WIFI so I DID do a restore via CWM. I guess I just realized that things weren't rooted! Oh well, you have provided some much needed info for me. At least now, I will know what to expect. Thanks again. Have a blessed evening.
I also had the wifi problem, and that is what started the whole thing with the full restore. Have a good one.
The same thing happened to me. I just installed another ROM to fix it.
Kinda ridiculous though. At least we know how to deal with it.
Thanks for this thread -- confirmed my sanity when I lost root after a CWM restore. Does anyone know if the updated version (1.6) of CWM for the A500 fixed this problem?
Hello friends,
I just went thru this whole ordeal. I reinstalled my 3.2 backup, but it wasn't rooted. That's when I realized root is written to the device and not the rom. I didn't know this. Anyway, after going thru hours of doing this all again and installing my virgin backup with nothing but root access (oh brother, what a pain) I realized something:
Theoretically, if something went wrong, and I had to reinstall my unrooted backup, and since you can't root 3.2, couldn't I just go into recovery (since I would already have that from gaining original root access) and install the rooted 3.2 update over 3.2 non-rooted and it would be rooted all over again? I haven't tried it, but I think that would work, wouldn't it?
Thanks!
Also, I know about Titanium backup, but I don't like it b/c it's left me with corrupted backups and missing data time and time again.

Simple answer - no. I see you sent me a PM, so I'll explain there
MD
Can someone dump a stock system or stock nandroid backup of their US device. I think i changed my busybox and failed to make a backup of it. I will probably need this in the future to upgrade.
Or can anyone tell me which file in the updates i can pull out the original busybox for ICS? Because i know the original before ICS was A310_02_0039_0086_US
But there is a patch in A310_03_0069_0130_US i am not sure what to do with busybox.p
Any advise?
I too would like a nandroid ICS backup, mine got wiped some how.
There is a US ICS nandroid available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30799431&postcount=7
It says it's rooted but it's not.

Should be, but you'll have to download Superuser and OTA Rootkeeper (and run 'em) from Play store to bring it back.
can someone comfirm that it works and is rooted?

Hey Madamada31 - YOU can confirm it. That's what is great about these community forums. Nobody 'made' an ICS nandroid for US TPT that I know of, except me. I took some time out of my day (back then) to make the backup. I took time to upload the file to my dropbox (after already posting it on everyrandom.com) and posted the link to threads requesting it. I can't help any longer as I don't have a TPT (in repair). Time for someone else, eh?
What I can tell you is that when I booted my TPT after the Nandroid was created, I was in a fresh install of ICS and I had (backed up) root. I needed to dl superuser and OTA Rootkeeper to restore it.
Jump in and tell us all how the water is!
Hello pwstein,
Thanks for your backup. I've tried but not working for me (maybe because my tablet is a WE version).
But I know it takes time to backup, factory reset, backup again and restore previous backup.
Try your backup takes less time then you to make it.
So thanks
I keep getting a MD5 mismatch when trying to use this. I've used it before and was fine. I wiped everything, fix permissions and got that every time. Going to try a few more things and hopefully I can get this to work. Thanks for the upload.
EDIT: I figured it out, I did something dumb.
Hi Forum,
as the title says, I backed up my stock A500 with the backup tool of sc2k. But now I wanted to restore the stock ROM, I found here.
How can I install the old files on my A500? Could you give me some advices how to? I don't know how I did it nearly 2 years before.
Edit: My CWM broke some day, can't remember when, so this can't help me atm.
Regards
Hey Guys,
I accidentally applied the OTA to my Note 3 this morning as I was waking up and not really thinking about it. I have a Nandroid Backup, and have Titanium Backup (which I can no longer access). Do I have to return the phone to stock, re-root it, and go from there? I feel like a schmuck for not looking this up prior to applying the OTA. Thanks in advance.
