hi, and thanks for reading this. If the newest sprint update, DI18?, ever gets released, I am afraid I will not get it. I removed some system apps and I guess the update needs to see those. Thinking I knew what I was doing, here is what I did.
Rooted my Epic.
with titanium i backed up media hub, sprint nav, and nascar. I then removed them.
I saw I needed them so I thought I would restore.
I guess titanium can't restore system apk's?
I start looking for those apk's and only find media hub.
I install media hub, epic says i already have it which i sort of don't really.
media hub is back, and thats where I am at.
I hope that makes sense? I will never use media hub, but I want the epic to be like it was right after root, so I can easily get the next, and future, updates.
thanks
I know someone has posted a link to download all of the stock apps... unfortunately I can't find it! Anyone know where that is?
I personally hate Titanium Backup because I can never figure out what it's doing. The backup function has done the same thing to me - you backup an app, then you think you're deleting the system app and can restore from a backup, but you can't. It's so weird. I would recommend either buying Root Explorer (~$3) or trying out the SDX Stock App Removal (free). You can also use adb push to put the system apps in your /system/app directory. But you still need the apps.
Did you try remounting as rw first?

EDIT: see Firon's post below (#8) it will take care of any modifications you've made as long as you have a stock (odexed) ROM, it won't even mess up recovery or kernel!
thank you all. I will play around with it.
according to titanium everything that was gone is back, except "com.sdgtl.stamhubb" no idea what that is. a google search came back with only a couple hits. Others have removed it, not noticing anything. I do not recall removing that myself.
That's a program name not the APK name... try updating if you're ready and see if it will get past verification... if not see if you can find the APK name and follow the same procedure you did with others.
Here's a signed update that will not trash your recovery, kernel, or root. You do not need a stock kernel for this update.
It will restore only the required stock files/apps and update your modem, so as long as you're on DI07, it should successfully update.
I tested it already on my own phone, worked great.

This way you don't need to restore a bunch of random files to update.
I appear to be all good. thanks everyone.

Hello,
The procedure for using this is to copy this to the SD card, rename update.zip, boot into recovery mode, select "apply sdcard:update.zip", correct? Or am I missing a step?
When I attempt this, I get a "E:signature verification failed Installation aborted." error.
Would appreciate any suggestions before I resort to flashing to stock. Thank you!

I am also wanting to know how to do this. I got the OTA update yesterday and it failed because I deleted Mail. I would like top know how to manually update to d118 w/out turning my epic into a brick. Any advice would be appreciated.
I believe this requires clockwork recovery not the stock recovery.
I have perm root with S OFF but have come in to quite a problem. I am having problems with the screen flickering on and off and need to exchange the device. The problem is, the nandroid backup that I made is inaccessible, and I have removed most of the stock apps off the phone.
The SD card I created the backup on seems to be corrupt, I cant even get it to mount anymore on my PC. Is there anyone that created a full nandroid back that can point me to the file (be willing to share)?
I have searched everywhere and can't seem to locate one.
Thanks for the help!
why don't you just use the "Downgrade ROM and Radio from OTA to Stock" thread?
Edit: Oh, and this is the wrong place for your thread also. Prob should go in general or Q&A.
The downgrade rom won't work w/ S-Off I don't believe. I would also a appriciate a nand backup, just the system.img if anyone has one to share.

Also, the OTA update will not be received again if you do the downgrade.

Are you asking for a NAND backup of the 2.2.1 stock rom?
If so, I'll see if I can't make one for you tonight when I get home. My work's internet connection is pretty crappy and it would take forever and a day to upload.

Take a look at this thread. It has the link to the official RUU and the install instructions.
This should get you back to stock, although I have not tried it yet. I grabbed it just in case I would need it.

And as mentioned in that thread, nobody who has followed that process has received the OTA update after having reverted back to stock.

As you should know if he's returning his phone he doesn't need to receive the OTA anymore. Just follow that thread. I had a rooted white one restored and took it back to get a black one. That's much easier then trying to use someone else's backup.

He said he was returning the phone, so receiving the OTA is not really necessary.
Those instructions explain how to get it back to stock, as requested.
OEM stock is 2.2. Post first OTA update is 2.2.1
I would not mind getting a hold of that, as it would make it easier to possible get the 2nd OTA (about which I have read nothing about what it does).
Also wondering if anyone has lost root and rerooted after the 2nd update.
So I am absolutely fail.
On my first device, I guess I had just froze the bloatware apps rather than deleted them because they were restored after a factory reset before I returned it to the store.
On this one, I actually deleted the bloatware apps and they are permanently gone, factory reset doesn't bring them back, and I didn't do a Titanium backup until after I had deleted them off. ><

I simply can't figure this out. I have an A500 that I have rooted successfully back a few months ago and installed HoneyVillain 1.04 ROM. It has worked flawlessly for months. Now I can't get root access with Titanium BU, BusyBox, Root Explorer or anything! I've tried re-rooting it using GingerBreak 1.2 with no success. I can access a backup that I made right after I rooted a few months ago, but that doesn't bring back root either. Can someone please tell me what to do before I make a 10.1" frisbee out of this thing. The tab's batery has been allowed to go completely dead once, but I don't think that would be the problem. I'd like to install the latest version of HoneyVillain if I can get root back. I sincerely appreciate anyone's help.
Sounds weird. You hadn't flashed anything else had you or installed a system update?
What's your kernel version & build number?
Have you tried using IconiaRoot?

Did you by chance do a restore using cwm..? Every time I did a full restore I would loose root.
I haven't flashed anything and no system update. I'm about to try IconiaRoot 1.3. Still looking for the answer...I'll report back. Thanks!
I tried Iconia Root. It goes through the steps and says Done...Have Fun! Then a message says Iconia Root has been denied root privileges. I tried to unroot and it says something went wrong and I'm still rooted. I must be somewhere between rooted and unrooted! What now????

You must not have wiped anything...? (Not that that is bad just more tech info for me), still learning.
Anyway, I have used honey vill and taboonay many version and with different kernals and love both roms.
What happans to me is I use cwm after I get the tab set the way I want and then do a full backup using cwm. Then I always want to fire test my backups so I immediately do a full restore using cwm, soon after I start getting denials from super user..? And after checking using a app from the market to check root, I have now lost root and can't get back, same as you.
I now just reflash the rom and if I do full wipe I reroot and all is well.
So I went with a different rom, backup and immediately do full restore and now no root again.
It happaned with every rom I have tried. Someone told me to delete the android.secure.image folder from the backup set that cwm makes. I tried that and that did let the restore, restore the flex rom folder but had the same problem. I have two a500 and both do this. I don' t know if stock rooted will do this as I have not tried yet. So what good is a full backup if it fudges your system. Maybe someone has a answer, but I have not found one. Sorry if this ain't your problem at all, but might be related. Later

That's amazing. I want to move up to the new HoneyVillain, so I guess I can count on rooting again? Wow. I love my Iconia though. I just remembered that I recently had trouble with WIFI so I DID do a restore via CWM. I guess I just realized that things weren't rooted! Oh well, you have provided some much needed info for me. At least now, I will know what to expect. Thanks again. Have a blessed evening.
I also had the wifi problem, and that is what started the whole thing with the full restore. Have a good one.
The same thing happened to me. I just installed another ROM to fix it.
Kinda ridiculous though. At least we know how to deal with it.
Thanks for this thread -- confirmed my sanity when I lost root after a CWM restore. Does anyone know if the updated version (1.6) of CWM for the A500 fixed this problem?
Hey all,
I was trying to get OTA2 installed while retaining my root and long story short I ended up formatting my /system in CWM thinking it would rebuild the factory image. Now of coarse my system won't boot. For some reason I am also unable to mount /sdcard. Is there anyway I could restore my system?
Thanks for any help!
restore \system of your CWM backup
I don't have a CWM backup . I know, a real bonehead move. If anyone could help me out with a clean CWM backup I'd be willing to compensate.
Edit: BTW I have a 16gb US version of the TPT.
Is it even possible to flash someone else's CWM backup?
Could I use the full image that Lenovo took down, found here?
I don't suppose there's an nvflash image for this device...
While I'm not sure, it might be possible to use that full image. Certainly worth a try. You might try asking on that forum, if you haven't already.
Yes, It is possible to restore from someone else's backup. I, in the past have copied my backups to my pc when they were too much and If i needed them, I just copied them back to external_sd/clockworkmod/backup/ and voila, it would appear for restoration in CWM.
I may be wrong, I do not believe that region should have any effect but to be safe (since you already made one mistake ) restore your US version with a US backup. I have a UK version and I would have uploaded a backup for you if you couldn't find a US one but unfortunately, my tablet is at the lenovo repair centre, being treated for the dreaded micro usb port failure. Hope someone here can help with a backup.
Thanks for the advice!
I downloaded that full image, but I could not get it to flash in the traditional sense. I extracted it and copied the system directory to my system partition and the tablet actually boots now. However, wifi does not work, whenever I press any of the menu keys a red frame flashes around the screen, and I cannot go to the About section of the settings to try to download updates or anything, it just crashes. I am also unable to update to OTA1 via zip in CWM, it gives me:
Code:
assert failed: file_getprop("/system/build.prop", "ro.buildfingerprint") == "Lenovo/ThinkPadTablet/Indigo:3.1/ThinkPadTablet_A310_02/0024_0065_US:user/releasekeys" || file_getprop("/system/build.prop","ro.build.fingerprint") == "Lenovo/ThinkPadTablet/Indigo:3.1/ThinkPadTablet_A310_02/0037_0075_US:user/release-keys"
Since you still need a lot of help anyway why don't you try manually installing all of the updates up to OTA 0076. You have to have all the updates before it flashed first. Link here:
http://download.lenovo.com/slates/think/tablet1
The nandroid backup would have to be of a factory restore, correct? Otherwise, all accounts/settings, etc would be within the backup as well.
I wasn't planning on doing a factory restore any time soon, but if the CM9 ICS port releases is soon, I can make one then as I have the same model and region as you.
I'm just really busy at the moment due to school and I rely on my tablet for school!
That would be the only safe way to let someone have a backup.
toenail_flicker, Thanks for the suggestion, I'll start from the top of the list and work my way down.
obscure.detour, being a student also, I completely understand. Luckily I just bought a Livescribe pen to offset my need for my TPT for the moment .
In the mean time, in case anyone else would be willing, you could also take a backup of your current system, do a factory restore, take a backup of the clean rom, and than restore your original image.
Thanks!
LOL You make it sound easy, but for a CWM noob it's a dicey thing. Never restored anything. Perhaps someone with more confidence in CWM than me can pull it off for you.
I know letting someone have a backup that contains personal info my be tricky, but if you've got time (couple of hours) on your hands you can backup your current system, do a factory reset, and since a factory reset only affects data, it wont wipe your root or CWM. you can then make a CWM backup of the newly reset rom, copy it off the sd card and restore your earlier system which you backed up.
This would save the OP having to start installing the OTA updates one by one.
Like I said, my tablet is away for repairs, otherwise I would have helped him. Or, maybe that's a good thing cos its certain that my tablet's main board will be changed, thus its going to be a fresh android installation on it. when I receive it in a couple of days, if you're still in need, I'll try to reroot and install CWM so I can send you a backup.
Much appreciated darkhandsome18! Installing the OTA's failed . It looks like the image I found is actually a test build. Even the earliest patches do not recognize it as a viable base to install on.
Did you ever get someone's backup? If not I can make one for you today. I am on OTA2 though, were you updated before you wiped system?
Here is a CWM backup from my 32GB US TpT.
Extract the file onto your external sd card in the folder /clockworkmod/backup/
Reboot into CWR
Select Restore Backup and select my backup (You can use advanced backup to restore individual parts or just the normal restore to restore everything, which will be factory reset US OTA2 with root)
Hopefully everything will work properly and you will never format your system partition without a nandroid backup again.
I have it on my Dropbox for now but will delete it in a couple of days because it takes up a lot of space. Let me know once you have downloaded it.
If you don't have a Dropbox account then sign up here and we'll both get an extra 250MB of storage space.
jhankinson, thanks! I was not on OTA2, would that be a problem? Also, I'm having issues backing up my current setup, I got ICS running. CWR gives me "Error while backing up boot image". Any ideas?
I'd like to backup my current (semi-working) setup before attempting to restore yours. Thanks again for uploading that!
I finally got it to work by remounting my sdcard in rw using ADB in clockwork recovery. That backup seems to have worked flawlessly jhankinson, I can't thank you enough!

pwstein,
Thank you so much for this Nandroid backup!
This is exactly what I need to get my TPT back to being able to run encryption.
My current ROM has been updated to 0089_US.
Are there any issues I should be aware of in using this Nandroid backup to roll back to 0075?
Please advise me accordingly.
Thanks!
Konker
Konker,
No issues to speak of. It is a factory reset, booted through startup without wifi, no account info provided, Lenovo standard bloatware, and no customization. SuperUser is already installed and active. The backup folder was renamed and then added to a zip file.
My tablet has a Gobi3000 wwan card installed, otherwise a standard 1838 with 32gb storage.
I hope it helps anyone who didn't get a backup made before upgrading.
Unzip file to sd-card /clockworkmod/backup/
Put sd-card in tablet
Shut down, boot to CWR, (make your own backup), restore to 0075
Enjoy

Try from the uploads I put on everyrandom.com today. The previously linked one was uploaded (550MB) on 3G cell service, likely screwing it up somehow.
edit: everyrandom.com/files wasn't serving the files correctly. They have been removed.

I was also so I installed the second CWM version about half way through that thread, and the restore went smooth.
Whoa, I just realized I never installed the improved CWR port. Mine is the original CWR that was offered up on the first day of Root. I should remember that because I ALWAYS pull my SD-Card out before performing factory resets. I heard the CWR update fixed that...
I'll note that in my Nandroid post. Thanks for the heads up.
I figured out what was going on. I guess when I extracted the files, it put the files in a sub folder with the name as the original folder.
I tried to download from the other post also, but it was like the files had been removed from the site.

I updated the CWM on my TPT with this version & I discovered that the recovery console is not as stable.
No long after I reboot into CWM recovery, perhaps about 10 secs, my TPT rebooted itself.
Has anyone observed this behavior?
