camera test pureview vs GS3 vs others - Galaxy S II General

Blind test picture quality
am i the only one who can see that pureview sucks compared to GS3 and iphone 4s camera shots, unlike what the auther says???? i mean i tried multiple times looking at crops and full pictures and find pureview tobe blurry and dull compared to GS3 and iphone 4S...
what ya think !

The Olympus pictures are (as expected) by far the best, followed by the GS3.
The iPhone pictures are pretty bad IMO and the Nokia pictures are somewhere in between.

Why is this in the Galaxy S II section? None of the blindly tested cameras were the i9100?

Nothing to do with the GT-I9100

Smart phone camera comparison - unexpected results

Wow, I didn't expect this. Phone arena done a test where users have to vote for which they think are the best photos taken with three smart phones and a digital camera. They were not told which photo is taken by which device. The results were really suprising as I thought my Samsung had the best camera among Android smart phones!
What do you guys think?

(remove the d's!) stupid url rule....

Seriously??? I wasnt expecting them results either! Perhaps its just the screen on the S2 which makes the images look better than they actually are. Damn shame that!!!
Too bad there wasn't a Arc in the Game. It takes really great pictures, but the Galaxy doesnt do a bad job either. But if you take a picture with the iphone it uses HDR This is why the iphone images has more details on it.
I have no complaints about taking pictures with the phone, it's a phone not a camera. It is getting better (look 5 years back).
another great site for comparing pictures is gsmarena look at the following link http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=3&idPhone1=3621&idPhone2=3275&idPhone3=3619
Ex iphone4 user here, and these results just make me lol.....
Set the S2 to iso100 in daylight and it DESTROYS the iphone 4 camera.
Indoors and low light is probably not its strong point though, same as most phone sensors.
I haven't seen any pictures taken by the sensation but the sensation pics look like how my sgs2 takes pics (ie colors a little oversaturated)
I didn't spend too long looking but in the outdoor tests doesn't the S2 photos look most like the canon photos? The other two camera phones distort the image more compared to the samsung.
The flaw in this study has been pointed out in the comments on the website. They just asked for the best one and so as this was obviously the canon the results for the camera phones don't mean too much. They need to do another test just between camera phones.
I expected this anyway. The saturation, white balance, etc are not that satisfactory. My previous phone Nokia N80 produced much better images.
Well, for me this is the one of the weaknesses on SGS2. I hope Samsung will improve it on the next Samsung Galaxy S series. Other than that, this phone is really spectacular.

Exactly ... in the outdoor tests the S2 even outperformed the Canon, because it shows more shadow detail.
This review only shows one thing ... not the best cam, but that the voters have been idiots, who don't know nothing about photography
What I find strange is, that my S2 shows a much better indoor white balance, as shown in these test shots. It seems Samsung fixed it in the latest updates?
looking at the pics, the canon is the best overall, and the SII comes very, very close (sometimes better outdoor, and slightly worse indoors).
the other 2 phones are far from their level of detail, balance and overall quality.
that's what I expected, too, and i checked the device names only after looking. the iphone level of detail is very disappointing.
one difference however is that the htc and the iphone both do heavy color correction (thats also a reason why they lose a lot of detail) while the SII and the canon do much lighter correction.
lastly if they're using HDR on the iphone and take front light pics it would be logical to use the free HDR apps on android and do offline HDR rendering on the canon, but that's not the case here
from that pic its easy to determine which phone is the iphone4 and thats probably why it has most of the vote there, since every iphone owner knew which one was the iphone ;-)

But the Sensation is the only one where you can see the guys pores in the outside pictures, all the other ones his skin just looks even
I'm starting to doubt the credibility of the comparison. Allaboutsymbian done a comparison between the Arc and the Galaxy S2 and the S2 came out on top.
wwwdallaboutsymbian.com/features/item/13021_5_Top_Smartphone_Cameras_pitch.php
Now I look at the photos again, I think the results are chosen from what initially appears the best image (from untrained eyes) and what appears the best to a technical photographer. The Galaxy S2 are noisy, outdoors but do contain more detail. Whereas other phones have more noise reduction at the expense of details but at first look most people would choose the less noisy photo.

But at the expense of the detail on the tree at the right of him.
HTC Sensation captures what seems to be a smudge of green, while in the GS2, you can make out the leaves. And his skin looks unnaturally red.
So the SGS2 decided to focus on the tree instead of the subject and instead of the subject looking slightly more tanned he looks like a shining ghost
The fun thing with this test:
If a voter would be good in recognizing quality pictures, they would most likely choose the real (Canon) camera 1st. The mobile camera that is the best, right after the Canon, would then have reasonably less chances of being picked as 'best', since the voters nót picking the Canon as best have proven to be bad quality-recognizers.
Thus the best camera-phone will have the highest chance of ending with the least of all votes
(as pointed out by several commenters already)

I have both devices, I'll take a pic with each and post to see which one you all think is better. I would post an iPhone as well but my wife is out and about.
Here's unbiased review, including the camera.

How's the camera on the Galaxy Note?

I think for the most part the reviews have said the camera is pretty decent, but how does it compare to the iPhone 4S? I think the iPhone 4S may have one of the best if not the best camera on a smartphone. Does anyone here know of a detailed comparison between the two phones? Since the Galaxy Note have essentially the same camera as the Galaxy S2, a comparison like that would be fine as well.

The best camera on a smartphone is Nokia N8. Nothing can beat Finnish queen - especially in terms of sound quality in videos, and still pictures.
I have seen a lot of sample footages from Note on youtube, and I have to say - there are some issues with autofocus, and in my opinion there is something wrong with microphone (too sensitive, might be a problem when you decide to record something on windy day). LED does fair job, even in completely dark room. Shooting in poor light conditions is okay - not as good as on N8, but details can be seen. I also noticed, that camera adjust exposition little bit slower compared to SG II. I am still not sure, if both devices (SGN and SGII) are using the same camera.
For me, the biggest problem is a way to hold this device and shoot pictures. I still didn't buy my Note yet (looking for some operators to release Note on contract in Poland), but I played with it in shop. Holding is not a problem, you can even put it into pocket, but shooting a pictures or making video might be tricky. With Nokia's I was able to hold it with one hand, and for example took fancy pictures from ground level, etc.
Question to lucky Note owners - can you take nice pictures from close distance? For example - can you take a picture of a book, and read the letters easily?
With regards
TT.

Absolutely. With my Xperia X10 I had to put it into macro mode, with the Note, it just gets on with it and focuses flawlessly.
In response to the OP, I think the 4S and the Note will be pretty even in good light, but the Sony backlit sensor used in the 4S would win in poor light.
Having said that, I took some video last night by the stage at a live concert, and the Note rocks.

2 things . The BEST CAMERA ON ANDROID phone is HTC AMAZE !!
That thing takes better pictures than my wife's canon . I played with all settings and then decided to leave it on auto and I have perfect picture EVERY Time !!
Phone is peace of crap . poor battery life , it gets hot after less than 3o minutes of use . Second thing is if you want to take text photos use scan2pdf mobile app . I use it all the time . Don't have the galaxy note yet its in the mail
Note's camera is not good compared to nokia N8, yes its true.
Note's camera is better than, sensation xe, sgII, iphone, se and xl. What else you want more? Note is almost ahead of every other top selling brands. But I am not satisfied with note's camera quality, especially under dim light, but still ahead, you can compare it in gsm arena.

Yes, I did look at it. I have absolutely no idea how anyone could think the S2/4S is even remotely in the same league as the Pureview there. I wonder if the more appealing enhanced contrast of the S2/4S are making you think those are better? Look at resolved detail and you can plainly see the superiority of the Pureview - colours you can change if you want to, there is no regaining lost detail.
Wow something wrong with my eyes than lol
Because s3 looked Sharper and well focused than Nokia.
I also think that the pureview is far better then Galaxy S3 or the iPhone. But to be honest, I think the Olympus E-PL2 is the winner. Maybe it's the too warm white balance of the testshots of the E-PL2 that made it second place, but that's something that could be easily corrected afterwards - missing detail not.
I had thought E and F were the best ones after inspecting all photos...
i thought C was definitely the worst though, which sucks cause i just had the Evo LTE and thought the camera was good, haha...
but id say if i had to rate them in order:
F, E, B/D tie, A then C
A (Nokia N8) seems to offer the best compromise between sharpness and dynamic range
HTC One X's camera has an amazingly high dynamic range and nice color rendition, too, but its sharpness sucks...
S3
PureView: amazing sharpness, but worse dynamic range
EDIT:
The One X picture is at least one stop underexposed
it was F,B,E for me.

It was F,E,B for me, though I think the downscaling (with a most certainly good downscaling algorithm) helped them a bit...
IMO, I think from crops
As for Sharpness is PureView > S3 > 4S > One X
One X pictures looks very grainy..
Colour-wise, I think S3 is abit saturated whereas PureView is more natural.
Pureview does look great and Nokia have done something impressive with it. Whether it actually sells or not will be a different story.
Pure view really killed the field, here...
It's even better than the PEN, IMNSHO. And to me, S3 is second among smartphones, just hairs in front of iPhone 4S... Shockingly the OneX is way way behind. From the review I had read before its camera was one of the points that made me hesitate between HOX and SGSIII... Glad I picked the SGSIII!

S3 Camera Quality

Hi everyone. I had the one X but returned it in anticipation for the galaxy s3. I was wondering if anyone that had both phones can comment on the camera quality of both. I've read reviews and it seems like the one X has a better camera with a better aperture of f/2.0, so it has better low light photos.
I wanted to test it out in stores but they are not there yet, so i was wondering if anyone can give impressions of the quality of the s3 camera (and can compare it to the one x shots). I'm still deciding between the 2 phones...
thanks!
I too had the one X but returned and pre-ordered the S3 and got it yesterday.
The two things that I liked better on One X are the camera and the display. IMO camera is noticeably better on One X, especially in low light. Also the camera app on One X is a little bit faster which might be due to the imagesense chip that One X has.
But overall Im happier with S3. Couldnt bare with One X's retarded multi tasking.

S3 vs iPhone
here are 5 comparison shots of the iPhone 4 vs the Galaxy S3. To my eye the samsung lets in more light and it actually sometimes makes the photos contrast too white. But the color reproduction on the samsung is closer to what I see with my eye
Now keep in mind, Samsung/android gives you much greater control over ISO/exposure/etc. These pictures are taken on the default "auto" settings. I think people could make them look a lot better by actually adjusting the iso/exposure/contrast. I'll probably come back on later and compare the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and the Samsung with adjusted settings later.

It almost looks like the all the iPhone photos were artificially saturated, because it's supposedly better to err on the side of too saturated than "washed out reality", for the average joe.

I'm really interested in your results after the settings. Currently the only thing holding me back from jumping on the galaxy s3 is the camera. But if adjusting the settings can make the camera photos appear better, then i think i'm sold. Please do post them when you do get a chance!
thanks!
Those shots are very helpful... iPhone pics definitely look better on first glance, but the colors are artificial/over-saturated and I think the S3 provides more detail in the shadow. I had a One X, and thought that camera was terrible; everything was overexposed and washed out and if I dropped exposure by one tick it went to far. Definitely more optimistic about trying the camera on my S3 when it comes tomorrow.
Here are some updated shots. I played with the S3 and got the settings I liked. One thing I didn't point out in the first set of pictures is if you zoom in on the pictures you'll notice more detail in the S3 shots, mainly because of the higher pixel count.
I think personally, the s3 camera is quite better. It has more tweaking you can do to get the shots you want. I really love the "Smile Shot" that takes a photo when it detects a smile or the fact you can say "Cheese" and it have take photos.
those are really nice pics
S3 is same sensor as S2 from what I have read. One X is brand new backlit sensor, which is why it does so well in low light conditions. One X camera is best out there right now. And yes the f2.0 wider angle lens is pretty sweet also.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Kind of weird, samsung has a photo relationship with pentax for their SLR's and these comparison pics look a lot like those between pentax and canikon SLR's. On auto settings the pentax/samsung favor darker and less saturated compared to brighter/punchier exposures on auto settings with canon or nikon. All a matter of preference just weird to see the same sort of thing happening here.
Will be fun to play with when I finally upgrade from this cracked captivate

Z1 Vs. iPhone 5s - 8MP snaps; fight!

My own experience with the camera on the Xz1 has taught me something; in anything but perfect light, the processing on 8mp stills is better than the processing on 20mp stills. Because of the oversampling, 8mp stills pull in a vast amount of detail with little noise and reasonably few artifacts (minus a touch of over-sharpening.
To test out just how good (and because, frankly, I have far too much time on my hands) I decided to skip across to GSM Arena and pit the Z1 against the iPhone 5s - the current "king" of 8mp shooters, in many people's eyes.
I was surprised by the results.
There are only 3 8mp samples on GSM Arena for the XZ1 and 2 of them had vastly different lighting, when compared to the iPhone 5s. To make things as fair as I could, I chose the picture with the most similar lighting. Here are the results (XZ1 on left, iP5s on the right)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/10186973536/sizes/o/in/photostream/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/10186976966/sizes/o/in/photostream/
Now, I don't know about you, but the XZ1 is definitely pulling in more detail, here. Your thoughts, below.
(Note - I also looked at the G2 and Sammy Galaxy S4. Similar results to the iPhone, in places, even though both were shooting a whole 5mp more data.)
(Note 2 - I chose the photo's as the "Comparison charts", so fawned over by the photo-obsessives on here, only tell 1 story: how good is the phone when shooting an interior macro with half decent lighting. Real world use is a different beast entirely).

The last one isn't a 1:1 comparison though. Completely different levels of light. Shouldn't even be compared.
XZ1 has a good camera, no doubt.
However, Sony is doing a bad job in postprocessing the photos because first they apply filters for noise reduction and after that they do resharpening which looks out of place sometimes (especially when zooming to pixel level).
I hope that the aggressive postprocessing is going to be improved in future updates.
It's strange to see that my 1year-old Lumia 920 is taking far better photos than the latest&greatest Xperia Z1, iPhone 5S and LG G2.
The Z1 camera is really good, regardless of some claims about how bad is it. But the thing to keep in mind is that it is very good in well lit pictures but in low light pictures it is not that good and that what we can see from the picture posted. This is already proven again and again. So only if sony could improve low light images, then the Z1 camera would be just perfect.
