Smart phone camera comparison - unexpected results

Wow, I didn't expect this. Phone arena done a test where users have to vote for which they think are the best photos taken with three smart phones and a digital camera. They were not told which photo is taken by which device. The results were really suprising as I thought my Samsung had the best camera among Android smart phones!
What do you guys think?

Seriously??? I wasnt expecting them results either! Perhaps its just the screen on the S2 which makes the images look better than they actually are. Damn shame that!!!

Too bad there wasn't a Arc in the Game. It takes really great pictures, but the Galaxy doesnt do a bad job either. But if you take a picture with the iphone it uses HDR This is why the iphone images has more details on it.
I have no complaints about taking pictures with the phone, it's a phone not a camera. It is getting better (look 5 years back).

Ex iphone4 user here, and these results just make me lol.....
Set the S2 to iso100 in daylight and it DESTROYS the iphone 4 camera.
Indoors and low light is probably not its strong point though, same as most phone sensors.

I haven't seen any pictures taken by the sensation but the sensation pics look like how my sgs2 takes pics (ie colors a little oversaturated)

I didn't spend too long looking but in the outdoor tests doesn't the S2 photos look most like the canon photos? The other two camera phones distort the image more compared to the samsung.
The flaw in this study has been pointed out in the comments on the website. They just asked for the best one and so as this was obviously the canon the results for the camera phones don't mean too much. They need to do another test just between camera phones.

I expected this anyway. The saturation, white balance, etc are not that satisfactory. My previous phone Nokia N80 produced much better images.
Well, for me this is the one of the weaknesses on SGS2. I hope Samsung will improve it on the next Samsung Galaxy S series. Other than that, this phone is really spectacular.

Exactly ... in the outdoor tests the S2 even outperformed the Canon, because it shows more shadow detail.
This review only shows one thing ... not the best cam, but that the voters have been idiots, who don't know nothing about photography
What I find strange is, that my S2 shows a much better indoor white balance, as shown in these test shots. It seems Samsung fixed it in the latest updates?

looking at the pics, the canon is the best overall, and the SII comes very, very close (sometimes better outdoor, and slightly worse indoors).
the other 2 phones are far from their level of detail, balance and overall quality.
that's what I expected, too, and i checked the device names only after looking. the iphone level of detail is very disappointing.
one difference however is that the htc and the iphone both do heavy color correction (thats also a reason why they lose a lot of detail) while the SII and the canon do much lighter correction.
lastly if they're using HDR on the iphone and take front light pics it would be logical to use the free HDR apps on android and do offline HDR rendering on the canon, but that's not the case here
from that pic its easy to determine which phone is the iphone4 and thats probably why it has most of the vote there, since every iphone owner knew which one was the iphone ;-)

But the Sensation is the only one where you can see the guys pores in the outside pictures, all the other ones his skin just looks even

I'm starting to doubt the credibility of the comparison. Allaboutsymbian done a comparison between the Arc and the Galaxy S2 and the S2 came out on top.

Now I look at the photos again, I think the results are chosen from what initially appears the best image (from untrained eyes) and what appears the best to a technical photographer. The Galaxy S2 are noisy, outdoors but do contain more detail. Whereas other phones have more noise reduction at the expense of details but at first look most people would choose the less noisy photo.

I can see a lot more detail in the sensations pic, like I said I can see the guys pores in the pics taken with the sensation but the other sensation pics are better too

But at the expense of the detail on the tree at the right of him.
HTC Sensation captures what seems to be a smudge of green, while in the GS2, you can make out the leaves. And his skin looks unnaturally red.

So the SGS2 decided to focus on the tree instead of the subject and instead of the subject looking slightly more tanned he looks like a shining ghost

The fun thing with this test:
If a voter would be good in recognizing quality pictures, they would most likely choose the real (Canon) camera 1st. The mobile camera that is the best, right after the Canon, would then have reasonably less chances of being picked as 'best', since the voters nót picking the Canon as best have proven to be bad quality-recognizers.
Thus the best camera-phone will have the highest chance of ending with the least of all votes

[Review] One vs. One X vs. Auto Enhanced photos (camera review)

Hey guys,
Today I took both, my one year old HTC One X and my new HTC One for a walk through town and I wanted to show you my photos.
The first picture is always from the One, the second one is from the One with the Auto Enhance feature and the third one is from the One X.
Taking a photo of the TV makes the picture flickering. I am not sure what's the reason for this, as it doesn't happen with the One X's camera. It also doesnt happen with my computer screen, just with the plasma TV.
The following pictures are taken pretty much in the same light conditions, however I wanted to show them all to you
In low light conditions the One seems to be ahead of the One X, at least if it's not completely dark ...
The following two pictures are taken at night time and to be honest I am very disappointed in the One:
I think even with my DSLR it would be hard to get a good photo in this light, but in my opinion the One X's photo is better than the One's photo.
All settings are standard with both phones. Maybe there are some settings to improve the camera, but it won't make a huge difference.

yes as expected the One X had a great camera (2x the detail) its only in low light that the One beats it
as for the settings its discussed greatly in the photo thread
The One images can be washed out due to the high brightness levels in them and they seem to improve greatly once auto enhanced
check the auto enhance post here
as well as tweaking the camera settings ofcourse (exposure, contrast, sharpness etc)
I also suggest reducing the sharpness to -1, as its too aggressive by default
by the way when zoomed out, i'm finding your HTC One pictures better

In your opinion, which of the phones took "truer to life" pictures? We can tell that the colors between the One and the One X are different - it seems like the One X is adding a blue-ish hue to everything - but without seeing the original scene, it's hard for anyone but you to say which are better.
Also, it would be cool if, as the poster above me said, you could run HTC's enhance function on the One pictures and add those to the comparison

I find the htc one camera better. More details and less noise. Look at the walls, trees, and streets.
HTC One X has better color production. This might be fixed soon with the One. I remmember One X had a camera fix also.

Yeah, I agree about the detail to noise ratio. I prefer that over more megapixels.
Stupid phone just needs to get a US release date...

The pictures of the HTC One are "truer to life", but I don't really like the night photos of the One, as they are more noisy than the One X photos, aren't they?

Awesome, thanks! "Auto enhance" seems to add to some pictures, and detract from others.
I think the One is less noisy than the One X during night shots taken with auto enhance, at least...but I'm not really an expert

The One X has an auto enhance feature as well, didn't try that though, and I think adding these pictures would make this thread a bit too confusing.

I was under the impression that the One X was already auto-enhancing pictures by default, but maybe I'm mistaken. I'm running CM10 on my One X at the moment so I can't check.

No auto enhance is in gallery as well on the one x, but some customs mods added it to the camera

I didn't even like the camera on the One X when I owned it. This is making it even easier. The HTC One is even more like an oil painiting than the One X. None of the pictures look natural looking. The HTC One has an even more processed look than the One X, with higher contrast and sharpening and noise reduction. What is an oil painting? Looks like an HTC image doesn't it? I want natural and realistic pictures, not instagram oil painting filter. HTC can't seem to figure that out, nor even allow a RAW image for those who hate the oil painting look. Even third party cameras only get piped the imagechip processed image.
The HTc One camera is even worse than the One X camera and even more unnatural looking. The only improvement is in pitch black lighting, which look like crap regardless and people seldom take pictures in pitch black. The overcast and indoor shots which the HTC One is suppose to be better at are actually worse than the One X. So it is all around even worse than last year's camera.

Thank you. Finally the review I was waiting for.
I really love my one x camera and I wasn't sure about the one's performance outdoors with good light, after reading almost every review of the one's camera.
The main concern was the new 4 mp (ultrapixels) sensor that should capture less detail than 8 mp on the one x.
After reading this review I am convinced that the larger pixels (ultrapixels) compensate the move from 8mp on the one x/DNA to 4 ultrapixels on the htc one and the htc one captures the same details as the htc one x. For example when zooming at the 7th row pictures the lincese plates of the 4 first cars, both on the htc one and one x are readable.I don't think any other 4mp sensor would capture this detail.
My conclusion for this test:
Outdoors good light: Tie
Outdoors low light: htc one wins, although the htc one x's picture on the last row was better.
Indoors low light: htc one wins.
Video (not on this test): The video on the htc one is two steps forward from the htc one x and the best on every smartphone. period. The OIS stabilizes the video at low light and the dual membrane microphones make every concert a joy to the ears, not like the crappy microphones on the one x or every other smartphone.

Now that I am convinced that the htc one is better than my one x in every aspect I am really waiting to have it in my hands.

The 4 MP camera was my main concern before buying the phone and I didn't like the idea of taking a step back compared to the 8 MP camera of my One X (and even 5 MP on the HTC Desire I've had before that).
After testing the ultra pixel camera for a few days now, I have to admit, that I am quite impressed with the 4 MP ultra pixel cam and I won't miss the One X's camera at all.
If I want to take some serious pictures, I will always use my DSLR, however for snapshots and the everyday use for Facebook and Instagram, the One will be perfect and better than any phone I have ever had.

Also at least one of your picture has the right side blur, guess OIS sometimes get it wrong...

I too have both one x and one, the one takes much much better photos overall, after trying it in every light and with the sun directly shining on the lense etc the one camera is impressive, and I do not miss my one x camera at all

That's an issue with OIS not resetting. Not sure if this is a hardware or software issue.

Well, this is what I about expected from a Moto camera. I have seen in the right conditions and lighting pretty good shots with it, but as a 2 phone guy, this is why I will be carrying my Nokia 928 with me for photos and Moto for ecosystem and Google services. I heard most of these inadequacies can be improved upon with SW updates. We will see.

Gotta love the Lumia cameras. Gosh I miss my 920. It was so easy to take nice shots with that phone and every phone I've had since hasn't even come close.

The camera on this and the new droids quite honestly sucks. I don't think anyone is surprised, but you would think if they were going for an "iphone" like market, they would have put a little more emphasis on the shooter. the artifacts in low light pics are plain awful:crying:
Was seriously considering this to move from the N4, but not anymore. Every single review that has posted pics just don't look good at all.
I love moto, just wish they would step their camera game up a notch and not just throw around terms like clearpixel...it clearly doesn't help.
I am interested in seeing real world shots that ppl get with it though---sometimes they differ from the review photos.

Well if you were planning to get the MotoX mainly for its camera, then you obviously will be disappointed. It's not leading edge right from the start, but a simple software update to tweak how it adjusts and balances the light can easily improve the quality a bit. I always view cellphone cams as means to create passable photos.

Yeah I'm not looking for a DSLR, but at least match the quality of the current flagships. They are a couple Gens behind with this cam (or so it appears). The S3 took better pics. My N4 is in the same boat...crappy cam, I've been looking for that vanilla phone with a good cam...Doesn't look like its gonna happen, might have to go back to the old root n rom method.
The Sony Honami could change that though.
Anyhow, still want to see the real world pics from the X...couple more days til we get a few samples.

Here's a quick comparison shot between the MotoX & Samsung Galaxy S4. These shots were taken about 30 seconds apart and have no post processing done other than resizing each to a width of 640 pixels. The one on the left is from the Moto X and the one on the right is from the Galaxy S4.
I haven't tested the Moto X in low light or any challenging conditions.
Initial thoughts:
- The one from the GS4 os a much more accurate colour rendition of the actual scene.
- The one from the Moto X has a purplish cast to the picture (see the colour of the sky).
- There is a lot more detail in the picture taken by the GS4.

Exactly..Like I said...this camera is generations behind the current top shooters. Its a shame, and there's really no excuse other than being ignorant and disconnected from what customers want. They even hyped the camera with this ClearPixel nonsense - please dont hype a horrible camera. I would have DEF bought this phone had it contained a good camera.

There are issues but I'm not sure whether they are due to the sensor or the processing done on the resultant image. The former would be a huge issue, while the latter is something that could be addressed via a software update.

LG G3 vs Sony Xperia Z2 Camera

I am interested in both these phones and am having trouble deciding due to the various camera reviews.
I am specifically interested in how each camera handles moving objects like kids or pets running as this is what I take most pics of.
Please post any samples here. Thanks kindly.
Edit - please don't post any YouTube links. I have watched every video comparing the two. Real world results are much better for everyone here.

I didn't have the Z2, but I had the Z1 and it was by far the worst camera I had used on any phone. All the pics had a huge amount of noise and tended to look painted. When the Kit Kat update came and there was no improvement I moved on from the Z1. Seeing as the Z1 and Z2 have the same camera I imagine it's the same situation with the Z2.
The G3 camera is at the opposite end of the spectrum and delivers the best still shots I have seen on a phone, certainly comparable to a dedicated camera. Absolutely no regrets moving on from the Z1 or M8 to this phone.

I have to say I have a z2 and it is by far the BEST camera I have ever used in a smart phone. -MOD EDIT- and no swearing please.It has been rated the best camera on the market over the I phone. And where the person said the pictures looked painted it's because the pictures are really that clear. They are so crystal clear that they don't look real. I had an s4 which was a 13 mp camera which was very good but this z2 in auto mode which is only 8mp and it takes beautiful pictures. And yes the comparison where it won was compared in 8mp mode so the playing field was even. You can shoot in 15.5 and 20.7 mp modes and it shoots amazing motion pictures. I take lots of pictures of my dogs playing and running and jumping and there is no noise and blows away the htc one m8 and the galaxy s5.I don't think the g3 could possibly take better pictures. I haven't used one because it's not available but trust me sony makes absolutely amazing phone cameras. They probably made the ones on the g3 and s5.but the z2s is a higher megapixel. And it's on a Sony product.

I hope the Z2 is way better than Z1, because Z1 is just an ok cam.

Actually I said the Z1 was the worst phone camera I had used as it had a lot of artifacting and noise. I can imagine there might have been some improvement with the Z2. Heck I was taking better pictures with the M8 than with my Z1.
This is not my opinion alone, take a look at some of the earlier posts in the Z1 picture thread.
In any event the G3 has a really good camera that I enjoy. YMMV.

I'm in the same boat. I'm choosing between the G3 and Z2, and camera is the most important thing for me since I take a lot of pics of my 3 kids, so particularly picture of moving object.
I did a lot of reading on G3 vs. Z2 and their camera. This one seems to have the most details:

In this review G3 did very well, best in 2 of the 3 main categories (detail and indoor), and best in 3 of the 4 minor categories (Panorama, HDR, and night). However it didn't talk much about picture of moving objects. I'd appreciate input on specifically this.

Any smartphone is going to struggle when taking shots of moving objects. That's simply due to the size of the sensor and how fast the lens operates.
A good test is to get someone to stand still in front of the lens and take a shot whilst they are waving back at you.
A decent digital camera with a good fast lens will keep both the person and their waving hand clear and sharp.
A blur free shot will require a fast shutter, something a smartphone struggles to achieve in anything other than bright and clear lighting.

Thanks for the info but as the title states I just want real world comparisons. Some mobiles capture .motion much better than others and due to the bigger sensor was hoping z2 would do well but jury is still out until further pics are posted.

To part answer your request, the Sony Z2 has a slightly larger sensor at 1/2.3" over the LG G3 1/3".
So, based on sensor size alone the Z2 wins this.
However, sensor size alone won't guarantee a better shot and this is where LG needs to up its stakes.
Will it do it..... Well I currently have a Z2 which is miles better than the Z1 I previously had.
Unfortunately, even with it's larger sensor it fails to capture a steady and clear blur free shot. A moving hand is just a blur.
Sorry I do not have any shots at hand to show this. For shots of say my grandchildren running around as if they are all driving formula one cars I always go straight to one of my fast digital cameras. Not even a dedicated small compact digital camera will take a blur free shot.
I'll be getting a UK LG G3 in the next couple of weeks and it will be a great phone.
I'll use it for many tasks including photos but I won't expect it to capture any blur free shots.
But to sum up your question...... Of the two my money would go to the G3. It may not be able to achieve what you are asking but what with OIS hardware and that Laser focus they will help photos to be much clearer where lighting is not ideal.

for me, with moving objects most of the times i don't go the picture route. i go to camera, scroll down that button on upper right to switch to video mode.

The only phone that can take less blurry pics is m7 and m8, that was the point. Shutter speed is a bit higher. I have tried all the ones in my signature at the same target, my kids ☺

I had 3 x M7s all had the purple tint issue due to poor heat shielding and the camera was rubbish. HTC thought it would be a good idea to use the same camera in the m8 !! It still blurred in indoor motion shots and really the camera is not good from experience. Thanks for the opinion though but lets stick to the mentioned handsets.

You're holding it wrong [emoji1]. The word a bit doesn't make it a dslr. Out of my sig those is the best for motion blur, nothing else.
You went back to the HOX?

This is a temporary phone. Got it off eBay for 100. One x +. Had the s4 for a while after the m7 fiasco ! Not getting into the HTC camera issues here as this is not the forum for it but if your happy with your HTC phone camera then that's good but why are you here then ? If you have a z2 please post pics.

I'm sorry but the Xperia Z2 appears to be far superior to the G3 in everything but focus time or when the LED is used.
Since 4.4.2 and the latest camera app, the Sony is finally taking the photos it was always meant to. Even auto mode is now good, which is saying something.
But there's obviously more to the G3 than just the camera.

I have never used a z2 but z1 compact was absolutely awful. Even with the lack of mega pixels i am very impressed with the g3 camera i am going to do a lumia 1020 vs g3 thread tomorrow. I think you will be suprised how good the g3 camera is.

Camera performance.

What do you guys think of the camera on the DT2? Low light? Video? Attached are some photos I took in low light with flash .. It seems to perform really good.

I haven't gotten a real chance to test it, yet. That picture does look pretty good, though.

It is a HUGE improvement over my maxx. I haven't taken to many pics but what I noticed is if you zoom in it doesn't get grainy.

Just picked it up last night but in comparison to my Edge it is not as quick to capture and low light didn't seem as good but hopefully as a few days go by I will see great pics

According to Dxomark it was rated as the third best camera. It got the same exact rating as the Nexus 6p.

This is seriously a killer phone when u put everything together....

I'm coming from the note 5 and the camera is just as good on the turbo 2. I took Halloween shots and they turned out great. Much improved from the original turbo.

I always wonder about reviewers noting this extreme differences between iPhones and Samsungs vs any other phone.

Camera is a DEFINITE improvement over the orignal Turbo. that my basis of comparison.

low light still not amazing, but its a phone camerea, cant expect DLSR performance.
Flash is maybe a bit worse, havent tested quite as much
havent done any video recording or used front camera yet.

I don't take that many pictures, but the camera is definitely better than the turbo 1 was.
I like the camera on my note 5 more, but this one seems fine too.

i think the reason for this is that the Moto cam has been so sub par for so long (saying this as a Moto user) that the quality camera had been really between Sammy and iPhone when it came to large consumer purchase models so its where comparisons would start

I think the camera is good. I just don't care for the software. I'm coming from a note 5 from T-Mobile. I don't like I just can't touch to focus then hit the camera button to take a shot. I always have to drag that yellow circle around to focus my shot. Seems annoying to me. Also I really miss the 1080p 60fps video from the note 5. That made all your videos buttery smooth.

Try camera zoom fx, a better Camera, or camera fv-5. I know they have touch to focus.
