The notes camera

I just bought a new camera to tote around mainly for my wife. I thought it was a pretty good camera, it's a fuji 14mp point and shoot. I've had one in the past which was pretty good.
Anyway, my point being my freaking camera on my note takes much better pictures than this camera does. I would think a dedicated camera would be the winner but Samsung did a good job here.
I've seen threads past complaining about the notes camera but mine takes great pics. Needless to sat wife still asks for the phone to take pics. That was a waste of money

Try comparing the two in conditions with poor lighting, particularly in any scenario that would require a flash or longer exposure.

When it comes to camera's, opposed to what alot of people think, the amount of megapixels you have isn't important at all. What's more important is the lens, and how big it is. The lighting, shutter time etc..
Just like knightnz said, the fuji would probably come out on top in "harder" to capture pictures.
Still I have to agree, the Note takes amazing pictures.

Yea I haven't tried the note much in low light or night pics so I'll have to check it out. I understand and have always read mp mean nothing so what is the point of these higher mp counts? I mean they are coming out with a friggin 41mp camera soon on a phone at that! Why the need for high mp if they don't affect quality?

It's not like the phone takes a 2GB 41 mp jpeg lol. It's a new type of technology that combines pixles in such a way that it creates a 5-8mp file with lossless 4x zoom and greatly reduced noise.
The *real* breakthrough is the size of the lense and the amount of light it lets in. I've seen some sample pictures and it has a mean DOF effect and almost no noise.
Back to the point. The notes camera is great and it is better than a few point and shoots that my friends have, I just wish there was image stabilisation but that's just software right?

I havnt been too impressed with the camera.. It is pretty good for a phone but I miss how fast my iPhone snapped a pic compared to this.. Not saying it's bad though

Well, the best image stabilisation is actually hardware. It is a prism that moves based on a gyroscope to compensate for all camera movements. Effectively it keeps the physical focus point where it was and moves it slowly to where it now is, avoiding the quick shake caused by your movements. Software can only compensate slightly by moving the physical focus around in a similar way in a larger recorded image.
The best I have ever had is in my Sony HandyCam. It was the bees knees when I bought it many years ago. Full 1080p video with a superb and huge Carl Zeiss lens. Dark shots were great and better than most other cameras, and it even does a fair IR night mode. The videos are very stable as long as you do not do any large swings. The 10x optical zoom is also fantastic.
Now my Note stands in, but it will never replace the HC because of the poorer dark videos, lack of zoom, and the complete lack of stabilisation. Having said that, it is used a hell of a lot more as a camera and video cam, because it is always with me!

Is there anyway we can shut camera click sound ?

The camera is good enough.
But when you see your note camera taking better pictures than stand alone point and shoot snapper, you know you have crap point and shoot camera or the person taking photographs is not taking pictures properly.
Under good light conditions, these modern snappers will match the P&S sensor quality if you know what you are doing. Picture quality varies greatly by simple choice of settings by the person taking pictures on Note. Leave it at auto and you will not get the best results in tricky conditions. You also need steady hands to get good snaps from Note camera.
But overall, its good enough to be good casual snapper.
But if you start comparing Note against even older good compact cameras like Panasonic ZS7 (which is now outdated), its not even close. These point and shoot cameras will outperform Note under any condition. Leave alone more expensive and also cameras with newer better sensors available today.
The good thing about Note camera is that it takes more than decent pictures with relatively accurate colour reproduction unlike some other phone cameras.

In other areas: I realise now that the stabilisation is hardware but you'd be SO suprised at how much software effects the video quality. I have 2 examples.
My old HD2 on windows mobile or android had TERRIBLE low light quality, frame rate dropped down to 9/10 fps, image noise was just unacceptable. -->
Updated to windows phone 7, and low light was quality is insane now. did not drop a single frame. The quality even went up to full 720p (which was not possible before)
I've even made some short movies with it because the low light was so good.

Second example is my transformer prime. Same thing. On Honeycomb terrible fps in low light and a whole heap of noise ---> ICS update and the camera was a different beast.
My point is, software is very important in mobile cameras. Once we get ICS, we can start complaining or praising properly

Dear katyarevishal,
I was hoping that till trying ICS leak but shutter lag is still same as GB... Losing my hope... Thats why i am using Fast Burst Camera app to catch the moment but limited to 1 mpx...

thats because its a leak and hasnt got the fully working driverset

S3 Camera Quality

Hi everyone. I had the one X but returned it in anticipation for the galaxy s3. I was wondering if anyone that had both phones can comment on the camera quality of both. I've read reviews and it seems like the one X has a better camera with a better aperture of f/2.0, so it has better low light photos.
I wanted to test it out in stores but they are not there yet, so i was wondering if anyone can give impressions of the quality of the s3 camera (and can compare it to the one x shots). I'm still deciding between the 2 phones...

I too had the one X but returned and pre-ordered the S3 and got it yesterday.
The two things that I liked better on One X are the camera and the display. IMO camera is noticeably better on One X, especially in low light. Also the camera app on One X is a little bit faster which might be due to the imagesense chip that One X has.
But overall Im happier with S3. Couldnt bare with One X's retarded multi tasking.

here are 5 comparison shots of the iPhone 4 vs the Galaxy S3. To my eye the samsung lets in more light and it actually sometimes makes the photos contrast too white. But the color reproduction on the samsung is closer to what I see with my eye
Now keep in mind, Samsung/android gives you much greater control over ISO/exposure/etc. These pictures are taken on the default "auto" settings. I think people could make them look a lot better by actually adjusting the iso/exposure/contrast. I'll probably come back on later and compare the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and the Samsung with adjusted settings later.

It almost looks like the all the iPhone photos were artificially saturated, because it's supposedly better to err on the side of too saturated than "washed out reality", for the average joe.

I'm really interested in your results after the settings. Currently the only thing holding me back from jumping on the galaxy s3 is the camera. But if adjusting the settings can make the camera photos appear better, then i think i'm sold. Please do post them when you do get a chance!

Those shots are very helpful... iPhone pics definitely look better on first glance, but the colors are artificial/over-saturated and I think the S3 provides more detail in the shadow. I had a One X, and thought that camera was terrible; everything was overexposed and washed out and if I dropped exposure by one tick it went to far. Definitely more optimistic about trying the camera on my S3 when it comes tomorrow.

Here are some updated shots. I played with the S3 and got the settings I liked. One thing I didn't point out in the first set of pictures is if you zoom in on the pictures you'll notice more detail in the S3 shots, mainly because of the higher pixel count.
I think personally, the s3 camera is quite better. It has more tweaking you can do to get the shots you want. I really love the "Smile Shot" that takes a photo when it detects a smile or the fact you can say "Cheese" and it have take photos.

S3 is same sensor as S2 from what I have read. One X is brand new backlit sensor, which is why it does so well in low light conditions. One X camera is best out there right now. And yes the f2.0 wider angle lens is pretty sweet also.

Kind of weird, samsung has a photo relationship with pentax for their SLR's and these comparison pics look a lot like those between pentax and canikon SLR's. On auto settings the pentax/samsung favor darker and less saturated compared to brighter/punchier exposures on auto settings with canon or nikon. All a matter of preference just weird to see the same sort of thing happening here.
Will be fun to play with when I finally upgrade from this cracked captivate

The sensor is an upgraded iphone 4s sensor

Are you sure about the camera sensor. I read a review last week that it was same sensor design as s2 but upgraded software. Not saying you aren't correct, just want to figure out which one it has.

From the tear down videos/sites that I have seen they have said improved iphone 4s, try to Google it and see what they say, I might be wrong too but I'm going off the info I've seen on my rss feeds and Google searches

I think that comparison is pretty spot on. You can tell from the comparisons that no phone holds the win every time. They are all great phones with great cameras.

There's a review of the phone that mentioned that the HDR mode was the only good shots and those are really nice.

wow i love your shots. THanks so much for doing this. I think in normal conditions from all the reviews and shots i've seen, the galaxy s3's photos look washed out, but it seems like with some settings it can be adjusted for. Does this affect the low light shots? (make them worse?)

Dealbreaker?

Hey guys, I've had my Moto X for a week now and I might return to my Note 3. I really like this phone overall, but man the camera really is that bad. I read all the stories but hoped the update would be good enough for me. Unfortunately it hasn't been.
I can't even imagine how bad the camera must have been before the update. The camera is simply dreadful. Do I have a defective Moto X or is it really this bad?
If I'm not outside on a sunny day or in a really well lit room, it's the worst camera I've ever had on any smartphone that I've ever owned. And that includes phones from over 4 years ago. Is it really this bad?
Here are some sample shots. I took these same shots with my Note 3, and those shots blew these away. I will try to post those later.

Yes, It is that bad. Coming from a S4 and I know what you mean. But I still love being free with a unlocked bootlaoder and would not go back.

I don't think the camera is bad at all. I didn't get to experience how it was before any of the updates though.
So far color representation looks to be spot on. I was even impressed by the low light quality. I took a picture last night in a dimly lit room and was astounded at how good the picture came out. It's way better than my last phone (EVO 3D).

ahhh ya i came from an iPhone 4 which is 3.5 yrs old and the camera on that was better in every category except low light performance.

Are you using HDR?
I also see that your flash seems to be firing. I have Auto Flash OFF because the pictures to look very washed out with the bright white flash. I find that the camera works much better and has much better saturation in lower light with the flash off.
If I'm just taking a picture of a list or piece of paper and I only need to be able to see/read it, I use the flash, otherwise I keep the flash off for "nice" photos.

Have you tried using any camera apps. I would recommend the following two apps :"a Better Camera "almost fully functional in the free version and FV-5, a paid app and I don't believe there is a trial version. I have been experimenting with both apps and have been quiet successful getting some really decent low light shots. Both apps allow you to set the ISO level and "a Better Camera" allows you to set the amount of noise reduction for low light shots (the options are None, Minor & Hard). Worth trying out either app in my opinion.

I've got pics of the kids inside at night, with flash on... And the pics are easy better than my s2 was. I find background light can make the pic taking tricky tho. I have to move slightly one easy or the other and when I get it right the pics are just fine. Maybe other phones handle background light easier.... But with a little practise, I find this camera pretty good.

And yes... Sometimes you think you need a flash inside... When you don't. And the pics are easy better with no flash. Again... I had to play around and get to know how and where the best pics turn out.
But again.... I'm one of those, it's just a phone camera guys... I'm maybe not as picky. I'm not trying to sell my pics, so I'm happy. If I know I want to take very good pics somewhere... In advance... I bring my camera.

Right about now it would be nice to see 4.4.2 with camera update. Noise/quality are un-exeptable for a $500+ phone. Yes S4 is night and day difference with Moto X in camera.
S4 was the FIRST camera in phone that I used and I took many pictures, most came out usable and some pretty impressive. With MX, most pictures indoors I cant even look at.....I delete all of them right away.

The only place I find camera quality to be bad is in low light, but it's not the hardware, it's the software. The camera software just sets the ISO higher than it should and overexposes everything in low light. I use FV-5 to manually set a lower ISO and manually set the metering point so that it doesn't overexpose the shot, and then I can get great shots in low light. If you don't know a little about cameras or aren't willing to take the time to manually adjust low light shots though, you'll be disappointed. In decent lighting I can get some great shots even with the stock camera app though, especially with HDR.

Perhaps you are right. But how hard is it for a TEAM of developers at Motorola/Google to figure this out ? We are on 2nd camera update here its still ****
PS. on S4 I used only 2 modes and didnt even touch settings, Auto and Night Mode......thats all I needed to take excellent photos.
few night/low light shots from S4, last one was taken in almost complete darkness, camera just picked up light from night club flashing lights

I agree. I love this phone but the camera sucks. Snoop Dogg came to my Christmas party and I was so excited to get some shots.
They all came out blurry all my buddies with S4s got killer shots. I don't know, maybe I'll blame it on the alcohol....
That ticked me off a bit.

This. For low light shots, I either use fv5 or take the photos with the stock camera and run them through Perfectly clear. I've gotten a lot of fantastic shots with my X. Low-light is the only setting in which I need to kind of finagle anything.

if you take a pic of your tree with an SLR with the same exposure settings and you'll get an equally awful pic.
honestly i think the camera on the X is fine. i think it could be better but i think overall its a pretty good camera, on par with some point and shoots i've used. it all comes down to lighting, plus the HDR mode really helps.

Been using Camera FV-5 for whenever I need low light shots. First one is the stock camera app and the second shot is via Camera FV-5. These were shot in very low light conditions.

CameraZoomFX lets you pick the ISO setting too, which could increase the exposure.

Stock. You can tell from the image properties.
EDIT: I take it back. There's no specific information that says what app took the pic, only what device. Technically we're talking about the inability of the Moto X's sensor to perform adequately. Different apps can force different settings/processing techniques, but you're still limited to the sensor/lens capability of the device.

It's all about lighting.

I'm with you on this one WizeGuy. At first I didn't think the camera was as bad as people said it was. But after using it in the wild and over the course of a week, it really is disappointing. The biggest issue for me is consistency. I CAN get a decent shot if I try to. Low light performance is terrible however and it's really tough to get a good shot most of the time. I was also coming from an S4 and didn't expect it to be on the same level obviously, but now that I've played with it enough, I'm positive even my S3 was better overall. In fact, I've been comparing it with an old iPhone 4S and I couldn't say it's better than that camera (except when there is ample lighting). I take a lot of pictures and it is important to me. Yes it is a camera phone, but downgrading is harder to accept than I thought it would be. I guess I value something that is consistent and easy in auto mode when it comes to my phone. Much sadder is the fact that I really like everything else about this phone, much more than the s4. I prefer the size the moto x by far to anything out there, but the nexus 5 is tempting me right now.

I am specifically interested in how each camera handles moving objects like kids or pets running as this is what I take most pics of.

Edit - please don't post any YouTube links. I have watched every video comparing the two. Real world results are much better for everyone here.

I didn't have the Z2, but I had the Z1 and it was by far the worst camera I had used on any phone. All the pics had a huge amount of noise and tended to look painted. When the Kit Kat update came and there was no improvement I moved on from the Z1. Seeing as the Z1 and Z2 have the same camera I imagine it's the same situation with the Z2.
The G3 camera is at the opposite end of the spectrum and delivers the best still shots I have seen on a phone, certainly comparable to a dedicated camera. Absolutely no regrets moving on from the Z1 or M8 to this phone.

I have to say I have a z2 and it is by far the BEST camera I have ever used in a smart phone. -MOD EDIT- and no swearing please.It has been rated the best camera on the market over the I phone. And where the person said the pictures looked painted it's because the pictures are really that clear. They are so crystal clear that they don't look real. I had an s4 which was a 13 mp camera which was very good but this z2 in auto mode which is only 8mp and it takes beautiful pictures. And yes the comparison where it won was compared in 8mp mode so the playing field was even. You can shoot in 15.5 and 20.7 mp modes and it shoots amazing motion pictures. I take lots of pictures of my dogs playing and running and jumping and there is no noise and blows away the htc one m8 and the galaxy s5.I don't think the g3 could possibly take better pictures. I haven't used one because it's not available but trust me sony makes absolutely amazing phone cameras. They probably made the ones on the g3 and s5.but the z2s is a higher megapixel. And it's on a Sony product.

I hope the Z2 is way better than Z1, because Z1 is just an ok cam.

Actually I said the Z1 was the worst phone camera I had used as it had a lot of artifacting and noise. I can imagine there might have been some improvement with the Z2. Heck I was taking better pictures with the M8 than with my Z1.
This is not my opinion alone, take a look at some of the earlier posts in the Z1 picture thread.
In any event the G3 has a really good camera that I enjoy. YMMV.

I'm in the same boat. I'm choosing between the G3 and Z2, and camera is the most important thing for me since I take a lot of pics of my 3 kids, so particularly picture of moving object.
I did a lot of reading on G3 vs. Z2 and their camera. This one seems to have the most details:

In this review G3 did very well, best in 2 of the 3 main categories (detail and indoor), and best in 3 of the 4 minor categories (Panorama, HDR, and night). However it didn't talk much about picture of moving objects. I'd appreciate input on specifically this.

Any smartphone is going to struggle when taking shots of moving objects. That's simply due to the size of the sensor and how fast the lens operates.
A good test is to get someone to stand still in front of the lens and take a shot whilst they are waving back at you.
A decent digital camera with a good fast lens will keep both the person and their waving hand clear and sharp.
A blur free shot will require a fast shutter, something a smartphone struggles to achieve in anything other than bright and clear lighting.

Thanks for the info but as the title states I just want real world comparisons. Some mobiles capture .motion much better than others and due to the bigger sensor was hoping z2 would do well but jury is still out until further pics are posted.

No problem.
To part answer your request, the Sony Z2 has a slightly larger sensor at 1/2.3" over the LG G3 1/3".
So, based on sensor size alone the Z2 wins this.
However, sensor size alone won't guarantee a better shot and this is where LG needs to up its stakes.
Will it do it..... Well I currently have a Z2 which is miles better than the Z1 I previously had.
Unfortunately, even with it's larger sensor it fails to capture a steady and clear blur free shot. A moving hand is just a blur.
Sorry I do not have any shots at hand to show this. For shots of say my grandchildren running around as if they are all driving formula one cars I always go straight to one of my fast digital cameras. Not even a dedicated small compact digital camera will take a blur free shot.
I'll be getting a UK LG G3 in the next couple of weeks and it will be a great phone.
I'll use it for many tasks including photos but I won't expect it to capture any blur free shots.
But to sum up your question...... Of the two my money would go to the G3. It may not be able to achieve what you are asking but what with OIS hardware and that Laser focus they will help photos to be much clearer where lighting is not ideal.

for me, with moving objects most of the times i don't go the picture route. i go to camera, scroll down that button on upper right to switch to video mode.

The only phone that can take less blurry pics is m7 and m8, that was the point. Shutter speed is a bit higher. I have tried all the ones in my signature at the same target, my kids ☺

I had 3 x M7s all had the purple tint issue due to poor heat shielding and the camera was rubbish. HTC thought it would be a good idea to use the same camera in the m8 !! It still blurred in indoor motion shots and really the camera is not good from experience. Thanks for the opinion though but lets stick to the mentioned handsets.

You're holding it wrong [emoji1]. The word a bit doesn't make it a dslr. Out of my sig those is the best for motion blur, nothing else.

This is a temporary phone. Got it off eBay for 100. One x +. Had the s4 for a while after the m7 fiasco ! Not getting into the HTC camera issues here as this is not the forum for it but if your happy with your HTC phone camera then that's good but why are you here then ? If you have a z2 please post pics.

I'm sorry but the Xperia Z2 appears to be far superior to the G3 in everything but focus time or when the LED is used.
Since 4.4.2 and the latest camera app, the Sony is finally taking the photos it was always meant to. Even auto mode is now good, which is saying something.
But there's obviously more to the G3 than just the camera.

I have never used a z2 but z1 compact was absolutely awful. Even with the lack of mega pixels i am very impressed with the g3 camera i am going to do a lumia 1020 vs g3 thread tomorrow. I think you will be suprised how good the g3 camera is.

What's the camera quality like in the newer Nexuses (Nexii?)

A few years ago the cameras on the nexus were average to below average, I'm wondering if it has greatly imrpoved since then? It's the only thing stopping me from getting a nexus.

The camera is very good, it takes some take outstanding photos. As the other person pointed out you can check the online reviews, and we have a photo thread in the general section.

I think both cameras are AMAZING! Ive went through s6 edge plus..iphone 6s plus..lg v10..and now nexus 6p. Front camera is really good and rear is amazing! I was bummed about no OIS+ but i havent had a problem and there is video stabilization i guess.

Excellent rear camera for sure! HDR+, Burst, etc.

Nexii cams used to be garbage, for sure, but that is NOT the case now.
Sure, the 6p might not have the best cam, but it's a solid competitor with everything available in a phone right now.

The camera is excellent for both photos and video in my experience. I'm very happy I got away from Samsung. Highly recommended.

Good apart from lack of OIS.

The camera is amazing. Detail, auto focus, HDR+, video is all amazing. But the 2 most impressive things to me by far are the low light photos and the zoom. Granted I'm coming from an s4, but the zoom is actually usable on this phone. The noose is minimal, focus is still pretty good. I was taking among pictures in a dark concert, zoomed in, no flash and they came out extremely well. You won't be disappointed.
