Hi guys!
For this test I used a set of keys and a cutter.

I hope you will like it
Cool. Was this a test device or your own?

Awesome, thanks so much!
I posted one a bit ago but that was with some knives....the box cutter is impressive.
I am more worried about the small pieces of sand, I think that is what scratches the glass more......But, this video has me almost convinced that I do not need a screen protector.
a test device
"Cool. Was this a test device or your own?"
Wow, this just proves that all the other people complaining about scratches just don't take care of their phones.
Super high, unrealistic drop test now? ;D

I saw a video posted a week ago or so and waist high on the sidewalk smashed the screen.....
Confirmed my feelings about the screen. When i got the phone it just felt like it could withsand some abuse. Wouldnt go so far to try this myself.

Yes, the screen is more sensitive to strong falls than to scratches but as you can see it resisted the sharp cutter
It's advertised as scratch proof, not as shatter proof. Keep that in mind

It certainly is scratch proof but as my device shows that actually the glass is very brittle! My screen cracked in my pocket! without me doing anything!

well a material can only be exceptionally flexible(ductile) or hard(strong), but never both. if you want a material to be more shatter resistant(ductile), then it'll be softer and less scratch resistant. Conversely a harder material will be more scratch resistant but more brittle and prone to shatter. its always a tradeoff between these two physical qualities.

Your problem occurred from a defect in the glass manufacturing process. I don't think that is a standard.

Although this is true in some cases it is not in all. Thanks to chemist and material scientist, treating or chemically finishing materials could give the best of both worlds. Go watch the gorilla glass test on YouTube, it is more scratch resistant than its competitors and almost twice as flexible.
Gorilla Glass has a lot to do with its surface finish as well as the glass itself.

Gorrilla or not, Its still glass!!!
Bottom line is anything harder than Gorilla glass which has a hardness between 8+9 will scratch the surface.
Iron, steel, nickel, lead, gold, silver or any medal are softer than gorilla glass, so they should not scratch the glass.
On the other hand, sand contains quartz and it could scratch gorilla glass, for example when sand is in your pockets (after a walk on the beach).
One more thing:
a common misconception is: 'make something sharp and it will scratch'. it's wrong. you can make your fingernail or your key as sharp as possible, it is still softer than the glass and it will not scratch.
So, no, keys wont scratch it (steel), but anything harder than 8 on the scale will with no problem. So anybody that has no scratches obviously hasnt made contact to the screen with anything harder than a 8 on this scale.
Hardness Substance or mineral
0.2–0.3 caesium, rubidium
0.5–0.6 lithium, sodium, potassium
1 talc
1.5 gallium, strontium, indium, tin, barium, thallium, lead, graphite
2 hexagonal boron nitride,[10] calcium, selenium, cadmium, sulfur, tellurium, bismuth
2.5 to 3 magnesium, gold, silver, aluminium, zinc, lanthanum, cerium, Jet_(lignite) (lignite)
3 calcite, copper, arsenic, antimony, thorium, dentin
4 fluorite, iron, nickel
4 to 4.5 platinum, steel
5 apatite, cobalt, zirconium, palladium, tooth enamel, obsidian (volcanic glass)
5.5 beryllium, molybdenum, hafnium
6 orthoclase, titanium, manganese, germanium, niobium, rhodium, uranium
6 to 7 glass, fused quartz, iron pyrite, silicon, ruthenium, iridium, tantalum, opal

Not very relevant at all. ALthough what you say is true, it is not the hardness of Gorilla Glass that lets it perform the way it does, it's the way it is chemically treated that allows it to resist scratches.
You are just talking about a mechanical property but not taking in mind the material process. Yes those materials will eventually scratch the glass (common sense), but whatever the coating on the glass is has to wear off first.
Chemical treatments. There's definitely a lot more to it, I would have to read more extensive datasheets, but here are some.
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/sites/all/files/GG2%20PI%20Sheet%20Rev%20b_050912.pdf
Corning® Gorilla® Glass 2 is an environmentally friendly alkalialuminosilicate thin sheet glass that is better able to survive the real world events that most commonly cause glass failure. Its superior
composition allows a deeper layer of chemical strengthening than is
possible with most other chemically strengthened glasses — making it
both durable and damage resistant.

Side note: I live just an hour or so from Corning, and I've been to the glass museum there. Wouldn't think a museum about glass could be particularly interesting but it's actually worth seeing.

most likely not a warranty issue. After all, it's not the phone's fault the scratches appeared
/sarcasm
I had someone come into the service dept. once with their nice new honda on the back of a tow truck wanting honda to pay for a new engine. They drove their car into a really deep puddle and ingested some water and siezed it up. They were screaming 'warranty' blah blah... the service manager said as politely as he could "it's not honda's fault your car went into a puddle".. I ran into the bathroom and laughed my ass off.

Simple science, my friend. Steel, on the hardness scale, ranges between 4 and 5. Our Gorilla Glass is nearly a 7 (typical glass is closer to 6). Unless you go at it with hardened steel (like a high-quality kitchen knife) the glass won't be scratched.
People often wonder why their screens develop small scratches anyhow, and it's usually because of sand in their pockets. Sand tends to contain quartz, which is slightly harder than glass (even Gorilla Glass), and as such, can scratch it.
So while I'll take out my car key and scratch the hell out of my Epic, you wouldn't catch me putting sand on my screen in a million years.
Wikipedia has a pretty good chart of hardnesses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardness_scale
Also, Corning has some documents with plenty of graphs comparing it to standard glass here: http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/literature

They could just use normal gorilla glass with a 1 micron thick coating of diamond. But yea, would still be expensive as hell, not because of the cost of the diamond but due to the manufacturing process taking forever.

The problem with diamond is that it's very brittle. The hardness scale is typically inversely proportional to how brittle it is. I agree that diamond coated something would be virtually scratch proof, but I would think if you knocked it just right, it would shatter.
Going back to keys on the screen. I always laugh when I hear people doing this. I usually ask people how sharp they would have to make their fingernail to scratch glass. It's the same idea. People assume that because something is sharp, it will scratch anything.
Having said that, I would be careful about trying to scratch the screen with keys, not because the keys would scratch it, but there could be something sticking on the keys that could (not likely, but not unheard of).
I have a visible scratch that's about 1 cm long, and it annoys me. I think it was on the night stand, and I slid it off to hit the snooze for my alarm. Later that day, I noticed it, so I must have had some kind of grit on the night stand. Ugh.

I thought diamonds were the hardest substance because of the way the molecules interlace? Wouldn't the density of the molecules make it less brittle too? I can understand if there was a lot of space from one to another, but not when its all packed together...

A diamond is a crystal, and the atoms are in a very rigid structure that has very strong bonds. Because the bonds are strong, it's difficult to separate them, so it is also very hard (i.e. something that has weaker bonds would not be able to break the strong bonds, so the atoms in steel would break apart when rubbed against a diamond and not be able to scratch the diamond). The problem is that these strong bonds make it so it is very inflexible, which in turn makes it very brittle. In this case, the density of a diamond doesn't have anything to do with it.
If you own an S3 you might want to see this, you will be much more relaxed about your S3

yeah gorilla glass 2 seems to be quite the thing :>
a lot of people moan about screen cracks when they drop phone, but if you drop a piece of glass it will break if it lands on a stone or something similar, the point of gg2 is scratch resistance, I think I'm going to try one of those tempered glass screen protectors when they iron out the small flaws in it....the customer service guy on the accessories thread is brilliant

That little bit of plastic on the screen is likely to absorb a little impact when it falls or gets bumped. Its a bit like those people that put a sticky tape x on their window during violent storms. This glass may be hard, but it can definitely be tougher.

Corning will show off Gorilla Glass 3 at CES
Three times as tough
By Carly Page
Fri Jan 04 2013, 10:06
The Inquirer (http://s.tt/1xXuk)
GLASS BLOWER Corning has revealed that it will showcase its next generation Gorilla Glass 3 at CES in Las Vegas next week, which it claims is three times as tough as its previous version.
On its website, Corning took away the air of surprise from CES, telling the world that Gorilla Glass 3 will make its debut at the show next week. It told us what we can expect from the upgraded screen protection material, saying that it will be three times more durable than its Gorilla Glass 2 technology.
With three times more toughness, the glass supposedly will show 40 percent fewer visible scratches than before and come with 50 percent more shock resistant strength - good for those who are constantly dropping their devices.
That's not all Corning has got up its sleeve for this year's CES, as the firm will also be showing off its optical fibre technology.
Wendell Weeks, the chairman, CEO and president of Corning said, "This year at CES, Corning will demonstrate its industry leadership in specialty glass and fiber optic technologies with the introduction of two products designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of consumers' favorite devices."
"These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity."
Corning is promising to reveal all on 7 January. We'll be at CES in Las Vegas next week.

What the hell is flexible oled gonna do? Samsung claims it will be virtually break proof and all signs are pointing towards going back to plastic. Unless they have some revolutionary mind blowing plastic, oops can't say that apple would be pissed, unless they have some.. **** it... revolutionary scratch proof plastic will the tradeoff be worth it? I am kind of mixed on the issue, but in the end if it still very tough and allows edge to edge screen protectors I am all for it. And I hope they don't have a bezeless phone like many people want. The glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof, as mentioned a hundred times.
That said, I believe that gorilla glass is more resistant to hairline fractures and cracks going across the glass. Whenever I see a non gorilla glass crack, it's usually across one side of the screen. I've had three gorilla glass phones, I've abused and droppes them countless of times, but never scratched more than a centimeter at most. I do believe other glasses would have caused larger cracks...
All anecdotal of course, but to me it seems this way.

I'm very confident that a plastic material as in a flexible screen will be just as scratch proof as my current note screen, after all i use a screen protector & like many people, i have never had to replace a screen protector due to scratching either.
Samsungs design problems with flexible screens aren't to do with concerns of interface durability, more so to do with keeping moisture out as a laminated Organic screen is destroyed if there is moisture ingress.
Jeezo how many times do people have to told gorilla glass doesn't make the glass drop proof, it means it's scratch resistant.
Sent from my Samsung Note II.
People also need to remember that a lot of phones these days have that oil-resistance coating or whatever it is to help reduce finger prints and make your finger slide across it nicely. So a lot of times the scratches people are seeing are scratches in that coating vs. the actual glass.
Also the person who mentioned about what's Corning going to do when Samsung brings out these breakable screens? Corning supplies products for all different kinds of uses. One example is in schools, where much of the glass for Science classes ie: test tubes, beakers, etc are all produced by corning.

Yeah the glass does break but even the 'gorilla glass is scratchproof' argument is bull****, put your phone within one mile of a grain of sand and the screen will scratch very easily!

It's gorila glass not bulletproof glass.
I must confirm - gorilla glass on note 2 sucks
So,
I must confirmed that Gorilla glass on my Note 2, have scratches.
what is sad here ? I WATCH FOR MY PHONE VERY CAREFULLY.
nOT even once ( or maybe once or twice ) it was in my pocket with other stuffs like coins or keys. ž
I took out my folie, because I've burned it with cigarete, and I did't like it. So my phone was about three, or four weeks without screenprotector.
YET, I found little scratches on it.
CONFUSED .
I watched some movies on you tube, with Note 2, and S3, the guy was simultainesly hit screens of two devices WITH VERY BIG KNIFE.
Non scratches was found.
I cary the phone for three weeks, 2,3 hours per day, in emty pocket and YET GET SCRATCHES !!!
if this is gorilla glass, I'm a monkey
Dirt and sand in your pocket can scratch the glass. The glass is scratch resistant NOT scratch proof. Any glass will scratch under certain situations

IS THAT SO ?
It's not scratches from sand for sure. ...
THE MAIN POINT IS....GORILLA GLASS DOESN'T DO THE JOB.
or it does in some cheap way.... Let's be honest
People forgot the word "glass" in gorilla glass.
Glass break, gorilla glass makes it harder to break, but still breaks.

SCRATCHES !
I don't have a single scratch on my Note 2 after using it for 6 months. So I don't what you're talking about.
scratch resistant doesn't mean drop-on-the-floor-proof

I dropped my Note2 on asphalt today and even though it had a anti scratch prorection on, the front glass broke! This sux. I thouught it would tolerate more beating then a single fall.
Now I have to pay 150$+ to fix ir!

if you the lcd and digitiser still function you can replace the top glass for just ~$20. You dont have to replace the entire assembly. Check this video out to know what i am talking about.

hope this helps
Let's see, even if english is not my mother tongue, I know the difference between SCRATCH and HIT.
As they told you, gorilla glass is SCRATCH resistant, so if it falls it has nothing to do, the difference is that is harder (not impossible) to get scratches with the normal use than other screens without it, and I can ASSURE you that it does its work.
I have some thin scratches at my screen after using the phone carefully for two months. Very disappointed.

Personally I think this Gorilla glass ( on this phone I can judge only ) have weeker products and better products on Note 2.
Someone have hardener, and someone softener glass on his phone. I think this various from phone unit to phone unit.
When I saw this video

I was thinking there is no way to scratch it with carefull use. And after just three weeks of very, very carefully use, BUM...scratches...

One of my friends thought like you. I took his note 2 and show him the scratches. He has a lot of little one.
To see it you have to look at a white screen, little "rainbows" appear.
Not a big deal but still scratches.
Anyone know about whether the 6P use Gorilla 4th gen glass or not? Since I read some review said it does, but nothing mentioned on official site.
If it use Gorilla, I probably just leave the phone naked, it's so sexy with any case or film.
Yes it uses gg4, it's in the tech specs

every smartphone since 2010 has used some form of gorilla glass. your statement is confusing to me. glass is inherently soft, therefore scratches are inevitable. i'm not sure GG4 will have much impact on daily usage.

Really? I thought the GG4 is some sort of anti-scratch. I used screen protector on all my phones before, however I took it off from my G2 last year and so far so good. Without any film it feels better imo
AS I understand it, gorilla glass is very strong when faced with direct face hits, thus resistant to scratching. As such it becomes weak to forces from the sides which makes it more likely to shatter. The newer versions are more resistant to shattering but that still is their weak point.
The nexus team confirmed GG4 when they did the AMA on reddit

Use a tempered glass screen protector. Looks good, feels good, protects the actual glass. Film screen protectors are dead to me.
Glass display on smart phones are not soft. Glass is a ceramic. The problem is that dirt, sand, diamond, etc is harder and that can scratch glass.
Gorilla glass just does a treatment to harden the surface making it more resistant to scratches and leaving the internal glass "softer" so it can resist drops and impact that shatter.
