Hey everybody!
At first, i appologise if there is similar thread already, but i didint see it in last two days that i'm reading this section...
i was thinking in getting one, but i have some small question(s)...
I read here and on net that the build quality, screen, response, etc... quite good, so thats ok...
But, i see that it has locked bootloader! Does it means, like in motorola milestone, that you cannot have custom kernel??? Or itsmagic script/proof of concept is fixing that? So you CAN have custom kernel? Because i see that there is custom rom(s)...
And, all in all, would you recommend it? What are the biggest flaws by you??
Thx

After owning the 32gb version for about two weeks now, I have to say that the tablet is an excellent bargain. It will do all that you want. Yes, currently its a little glitchy, but the upcoming patches/updates will cure most of the issues.
If the locked bootloader is a concern, well, I wouldnt sweat it. This tablet is still relatively new on the market. In six months, I am sure either acer will unlock or one of the dev's will.
My personal opinion is that the device doesn't need to be unlocked right now. The OS works as stated and will only get better with the updates.
I too would like the unlocked bootloader only because I would like the ability to reload the stock operating system in the event an app pooches it, or make a backup image of my tablet for restoration purposes. Right now in order to reload to stock takes a bit of "massaging" code with the chance of corrupting checksums on files which could prevent updates from acer actually working.
I have to say, that I really enjoy the a500, plays movies, ebooks, surfs the net, has plenty of storage and the ability to add more storage, has a full functioning usb port and has hdmi out......totally awesome, better than a laptop!
I will say this though, before you purchase any tablet, take them for a test drive and then choose the one that suits your needs.
This device is a must buy...if you ignore a few bugs .....which would definately be fixed in the next update....you don't get a usb 2.0 that easily on any device...

Although its boot loader is locked but it runs relatively stock honeycomb compared to other tabs hence it gives optimum performance already .

im really satisfied with my iconia a500 right now...no regrets at all...
To answer the original question: yes, itsmagic does get around the locked bootloader. There's still an element of complexity added by the bootloader, but nothing too difficult.
Acer though still haven't released the kernel source (illegally I might add) so there are no custom kernels fully working yet.
The hardware itself is excellent though.
Ok, so all in all, except few software flaws/bugs, device is worth buying!
Thx to everyone

The full USB port is THE point in my opinion - the full connectivity HC 3.1 will bring can be used without adapter or even a dock. The tab itself could be a bit smaller and lighter, but is quite ok this way. One point: the microfone is really bad - everything above approx. 3.5 kHz is just cut-off
I just ordered myself one a few days ago, should be getting it today
But well, to the point: I've been reading lots of reviews on it, trying to research all the negatives it has to it and all that. And so far apparently the largest issue people complain about is lack of Exchange support out-of-the-box, ie. not much.
Since I don't use Exchange anyways that doesn't affect me in the least. What most drew me to A500 is the full-size USB host port on it. Apparently it's the only 10" tablet at the moment with such, and atleast to me that's a really big advantage A500 has over the others. There's simply so many situations where being able to pop a USB stick or portable HDD on it will be a godsend. Besides, being able to pop in a regular USB keyboard when you're planning do to a lot of typing is quite a nice feature, too Bluetooth keyboards are still so rare and damn expensive.
Lets put it like this I had to stop reading negative reviews because it made me experience bugs lol

I've done a search with no luck. Where can I find the most comprehensive instructions for installing Honeycomb to the original Galaxy Tab?
Thanks!
Over in the development forum in this very section. I think both CDMA and GSM variants only ever managed to get WiFi working and that was it. Now that the full source of Honeycomb and ICS are out, there might be something new coming, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Ok. Thanks for the info.
do you still have the honeycomb files? oldmacnut pulled them i never gotta check it out if you do can u post a link or pm me
I havent been able to find anything regarding honeycomb on the 7" SGT as well. I read that Honeycomb was geared towards dual core devices though. I wouldnt expect great performance if someone was able to develop it for the SGT. Just mu $0.02.

I was running the Alpha/RC1 build for a couple of days on my GSM P-1000T and it wasn't bad. Only problems were a few graphical glitches (notification area quick toggles didn't appear) and the major ones were that I couldn't get my 3G service to work and I couldn't access the internal SD card. Other than that, not a bad OS, but probably not a daily driver level just yet.

I have been using the same RC1 build for the last week. I have major battery issues, takes forever to charge.
What did you go to after this? The time it takes me to charge my battery alone is enough reason for me to change ROM's.
Back to the original topic:
There is a thread in the general section 4th one down for the RC1 build if you want to test it out.

Obviously this is a beta version of the upcoming samsung official ICS release for S2, it looks like a total catastrophe with TouchWiz..it looks NOTHING like beautiful Nexus Interface.
If it will look anything remotly similiar on the GNOTE it would be catastrophic..
Yeah agree. If the final looks like this i'm gonna flash vanilla ICS.. Well, i'll probably flash that either way.

yes this is total dissapointment, all people expect a total new UI, and what we get is something that looks identlical to the interface we have right now... it does not look like ICS at all... looks more like gingerbread... what are Samsung thinking drop the TouchWiz crap, TouchWiz has played out it's roll... it feels like windows 7 but with the xp GUI...
We should send a protest list or something to samsung cause this looks like a total nightmare...all people expect the brilliance of the Nexus GUI.. but this looks even worse then I could imagine.
Long live cm9!!

I wouldn't mind vanilla ICS, but there'd better be a way to turn off the on-screen soft keys on phones that have hardware ones. Also, I can't stand having to reach all the way to the top of the phone for anything but notifications. The menu button at the bottom better continue to work the same.
The vanilla runs well on the fassy. Same stuff new version.

I think the phone will look odd with ICS anyway. You will have two rows of redundant keys, even though one may be not working.

To some one who have not used android before, can you explain to me what you mean with Vanilla ICS ????
You mean it will be possible to root with the standard ICS interface ?
Will the performance be as good as the official or will be lagging and buggs etc ?
Anyway, why it look so similar to todays gingerbread is maybe cause samsung are doing an half-hearted upgrade..
they have promised us ICS.. but they only seem to put small amount of energy to make a big update...
the interface looks identical etc.. Why I wanted ICS was cause it is basically a totally new OS...compared to gingerbread.

Stock Android. The way Google had intended it to look, feel, and perform.
This is unbelievably disappointing. I'm still glad I have my S2, because of the ASOP rom currently under development. I'll most definitely switch between phones whenever I want and just store any content that matters on an SD card, so my phone is virtually hot-swappable between devices.

Yes I understand that, but there will be no official version cause the stock version most be modified to be able to work with GNOTE ???
I just wonder if it is possible to port the ICS to GNOTE without any glitches and performance loss... how does past vanilla versions works for other phones ?

It depends on developer support. If the devs for CM9 can port it to the Note, than only then can we expect a (hopefully) fully functional ICS rom on the Note.
As it stands, Google only releases official vanilla roms to their Nexus line of phones, and they release the source for other manufacturers/devs to port to other phones.
I hope that answers your question mate, the way it was worded was a bit difficult to fully understand.

Well official as in with 'nothing' on it, no carrier or vendor tweaks/applications added and in this case, things like Touchwiz.
Also ICS was launched with Galaxy Nexus not Galaxy Note, but regardless I would presume that Samsung or another developer on XDA or any other forum will create a port to the Galaxy Note.
Vanilla just means that it doesn't have the other unnecessary stuff loaded e.g. Touchwiz. Vanilla is always compiled directly from AOSP source.
Why is everyone so angry about samsung including touchwiz into the ICS rom (I assume that's what this discussion is about?). Isn't the best thing about android the incredible ease of installing another launcher? Shouldn't the stock launcher just be a .apk away?

Well it's true what you said, but Samsung will skin almost everything.
The phone, browser, music player....all of them will be skinned with TW & I guess people in this thread (me include) prefer the stock ICS look and feel.
atm i looks not really nice, but! it is an internal beta, maybe even a alpha version, nobody knows if samsungs is just trying and looking if touchwiz is working under ics, i'm sure that they will make some more cosmetics for ics.
Dunno but no on saw the video? Didn't you something wrong or better few things that where not as expected on it? First the phone had a yellow triangle meaning Samsung had a problem flashing a non stock Rom on the phone. Second on the *#1234# if you not 100% eye sight old man here the csc is unknown.......... . Third the keys back and menu keys aren't functionally at all, only if they had the drivers for them to implant on csc so they could work. Fourth the browser not sure was on xda forums when he started? Or did I see wrong or now I know they where looking xda forum for a working csc file to make the buttons work.
And about touchwiz give me ics on note even with a touch I don't care, so someday the devs can make a custom Rom, on our needs. But they need to have something to play with and take some codes/ideas from the custom files.

Wow.. that is disappointing... i thought i could just flash back the stock rom when ICS is out. Now looks like I'm going to stay rooted for good.
If I was to start developing a custom ROM based on the latest ICS update for the Verizon model of this tab.... would there be any interest ?
I ask because last time I took the time to do one for the Verizon SGT (the original 7 incher) there wasn't that many interested "customers"

True.. I'm past all that at this level and it would just be the time invested. Sounds like it's not worth it. Heh
If you did an ICS rom and left the samsung video player in it and added ntfssd (from google play) or compiled your own kernel that would use exfat or ntfs (TWRP supports exfat) for large file support I would test it.
Keep in mind ICS has been done, but If you could figure out how to port kitkat to the device that would be awesome. Kitkat is supposed to have great memory management. The galaxy 7.7 only has 1GB of system memory HC ran fast on it but ICS is a bit of a dog even with bloat removed and tweaks applied. The port of PAC rom to the i815 gave me issues due to incorrectly signed files in the rom.
I haven't checked the general section on this forum for a long time but yea I still use my i815 quite often and the lack of stock development has been extremely disappointing. But there is a lot of driver work afaik particularly with the IR and LTE. I don't have a data plan on my i815 anymore but from time to time I may throw my phone SIM in there. Biggest thing for me over the other ROMs is having the function of the full hardware. I personally dislike touchwiz thoroughly with the exception of multiwindow features
So yea
I would definitely be interested there are likely a few others who would be interested but don't frequent this section. The i815 info thread I think still have a decent number of subscribers.

Hey guys,
from reading around the forum lately, I am starting to believe it is very possible to port Samsung stock 4.4.2 from another device to our beloved S2. It should be able to run it just fine with these specs.
Take a look at this guide for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ide-how-to-port-sammy-4-4-2-firmware-t2750152
We have all that is needed, and if we attempt to follow the steps of that guide by of course using S2 files instead, it could be simple to get a bootable version. Remember, that is just one guide out of a hundred, there are other ways of doing this.
However, my concerns are with the bricking part. Personally I am not aware of how big the possibility of bricking a S2 is by attempting this in case it goes wrong. If this is no issue, then we might as well have fun trying.
What are your thoughts on this?

True, they ported from Note2 which has same chipset as S3: Exynos. Our S2 has Exynos too ya know, so I am really convinced it is possible to get it on i9100!
Is it stable?
I think it's possible
A great developer has already ported xperia z2 kitkat build to 2011 xperias like arc s or xperia ray... And he's going to do the same with 2012 xperia line. But I don't know why we can't even port 4.2.2 build from s2 plus. I mean they're exactly the same right?

If we manage to get a booting port, a lot of progress can be made as a lot will be interested in helping I am sure.
Wouldn't it be wiser to use the Galaxy S4 Zoom or Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 ROMs and Kernels to do the porting, because the SoC should be more similar to the S2 (Exynos 4210 vs 4212)?

I am sure that it is possible to port stock to our S2 Samsung 4.4.2, let's expect to see soon Kit kat in our movile. Thank you very much for giving guides to be able to port Kit Kat.
