Windows 8 on Dell Vostro 3350 - Windows 8 General

Has anyone tried to install w8 on Dell laptop? I've successfully installed on it but no display on screen. However I can see desktop if I plug into TV via HDMI.
Any solutions?

Hi,
This is Anoosha from Dell Social Media Team.
This is with regards to the issue which you are facing. As per the display specification of Vostro 3350, the Maximum resolution supported is 1366 x 768 pixels at 263 K colors. But windows 8 has a higher resolution rate which is not compatible on this model. You can try saving the above resolution when connected to TV and check the display on system, but this might lead to other driver conflict.
Please reply for any concerns.

Hi Anoosha,
Thanks for your reply. It doesn't work on screen even I set the correct resolution. Now, I've to use the VMPlayer to try windows 8.
Just one upset thing is that I can't use windows 8 on my laptop even I would like to buy it.
Is there anyway can we get a new display driver which supports windows 8?
Thanks.

Since Dell is looking here.. Any news from new touchpad drivers to Vostro 3350? Drivers supporting new gestures from Windows 8?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply,
I completely understand your concern but we are sorry to tell that as of now the drivers available are for windows 7. The manufacturers have to release the drivers for windows 8 in order for us to update on our support site and this would take a month or two.

OMG!!!! Dell, Any news on a new Android tablet?

Is there any Android tablet? I didnt know. Never saw one. Thought it was a big smartphone only.

Windows 8 is also not recognising my monitor on my laptop unless I disabled the intel drivers and use an incredibly low resolution.
There doesn't seem to be a fix anywhere apart from some ridiculous 'stand by' trick that works for some but not others.

According from Dell-Asooh, we need to wait for 2 or 3 months to get updated driver. That's not good enough to wait that long and use low resolution.

I was just curious about what you think about Windows 8. So I started this poll to see it in percent.
Please comment about what you think of it
This is a desktop operating system. It does not belong on XDA-Developers.com
They've even said that developers will have to write different versions of their apps for ARM platform because of battery requirements. This will not run on a XDA device and it's out of place on XDA. Desktops are not personal or cellular digital assistants(XDAs).
Please add my option, I'll select it.
Wait... scratch that.... Add in the "I want a Linux forum" and "I want a mac forum"

Stop acting like a troll and get a life. First you need to educate yourself about what XDA are all about. second before running your mouth like a child, research Microsoft's roadmap. Microsoft intend to merge there desktop and mobile operating systems by windows 9 or 10. By then there will be no windows phone. Just one unified platform. Furthermore you already know that Microsoft have added support for ARM architecture already into windows 8, which will allow the OS to be ported to a number of mobile devices. Not just tablets.

XDA Developers have nothing to do with personal digital assistants. When the community was founded as a HTC development forum. The first device the admins got hold of was an 02 UK HTC Device. Back then the O2 HTC devices were branded XDA. Hence the name........

Yep.. cross digital assistant. XDA.
A desktop operating system has nothing to do with a digital assistant.
I installed it on my 3 year old netbook yesterday... Its a preview but its not a great one. Not much works...
What did work:
-IE10
-Control panel
-Desktop tile
-Internet tile
-resize tile move tiles delete tiles
-windows 7 desktop is very much there.
-UI metro? IS basically just skinned over windows7. I have no experience with windows7 so i dont know how close it is.
Did not work:
-most of the tiles that looked fun
-resolution was locked at 800x600
- no options to change resolution
-no microsoft updates. it was there but obviously does not connect to updates
-limited wallpaper.
My netbook is obviously very very minimum spec so the expreince was very slow and sluggish..
I could mouse click to simulate some finger gestures.
Re-installed XP about an hour later

I like it and I think it'll only get better. I like what Microsoft is doing, because I feel eventually most of peoples' main computers will end up being touch-based tablets anyway. And the one thing that's kept me from purchasing a tablet is not being able to play with a full operating system. While I feel Windows 8 won't be totally full, I think it'll fall between something like iOS and Android and a full windows operating system to where it integrates well on a tablet.
I do feel they need to change some things up on the regular desktop/explorer experience is it feels more well with the Metro theme.
I'm still waiting for things like Windows Media Player tiles and such that update songs.
I have to say i am supprised that this sub forum is on here just now, yes Win8 Will run on ARM but it doesnt now, and to my knowledge there isnt any available win8 OS that will just yet.
I have no doubt that at some point we wil have access to the ARM Windows OS and that development will begin in porting it in to our devices, but it is somewhat early to be talking about it, it might be even easier than we think, given that MS has a long tradition of dumping gigabytes of drivers on its install disks
Still, it does no harm so theres no point ranting on about it, just a wee bit supprised its up so early, is someone getting a bit too excited perhaps?
I'm not sure if I could use it as a desktop system but as a tablet OS could it work.
I would like to buy a tablet because I like the idea and the portability of them. My problem with the at the moment available tablets is that they are big phones.
With Win8 we could have a "big" OS on a tablet (I know there are Win7 tablets but they are not really good) and that could be really interesting.
I can't vote at the moment because I don't like what I have to choose. "Could be interesting" would be the right answer for me.
Stop saying it does not belong or it is to early for xda whe don't know nothing what windows 8 can do until the final release.. maybe all will be verry surprized

Try it on Virtualbox. Maybe that will work.
To be honest, from what ive read of Win8 it all sounds very good, Metro aside that is, i quite like metro from a tablet point of view but thats about as far as ive gotten with it
It would be ubber cool if they can "clone" a desktop display to a tablet, it would make for an ultimate remote control for a media centre oh and allow computers to be media centre extenders
yeah i know various remote desktop clients are out there but none of them (correct me if im wrong) will also display videos and give the same level of UI response, it needs a hodgepodge of 3rd party tools to get it working and even then with a laggy control.
I think its beautiful

Just buy some blank dvds and burn a backup copy of all your schoolwork and development onto them if they're that important to you, its standard procedure with OS installs.

I'm so JEALOUS! My tx2's motherboard burnt out on me, and it's virtually impossible to find a new replacement. It's not under warranty either. It was a manufacturer's defect though..

Windows 8 for Acer Tab

Thank You

I still haven't seen anyone do that to an a500 - a w500 sure, but not on an a500. Not yet anyways.
Don't believe it will happen to be honest, There was the same question with win 7 on a galaxy tab. The hardware needs windows supported drivers, if you can't get drivers for windows then the hardware is useless...
Windows 8 is supposed to support ARM architecture, so you never really know.
That's what I've read as well but the driver... the drivers!
Who will think of the drivers!?

Win8 for the ARM architecture isn't even out yet in a DEV build AFAIK.
"Notebooks running Windows 8 on ARM processors rather than Intel or AMD x86 chips aren’t expected to hit the market until June 2013, insider sources have suggested, indicating Microsoft’s Windows on ARM project will lag considerably behind the mainstream build. The platform itself is tipped to go public at the end of 2012, DigiTimes‘ sources tell them, but with the first hardware not scheduled until midway through the following year, broad adoption isn’t seen until 2014 at the earliest."

i Have windows 8 on my HP Dm1 notebook... It runs great.. but as said above its not available for arm . WHEN Microsoft releases it There will be reference drives available for most popular Arm hardware.. this includes our tablet.
But until its released who knows..im guessing it will be mid year before there is going to be a win 8 arm.. But i also think that because of this new intel low power chip.. Microsoft could rethink there arm release if this chip provides what intel is claiming .

I checked it out..it is refering to the ms install key maker program.. It says nothing anywhere on there about the iconia a500. other then uses it as a way to get you on THAT Site to look and and hope you click on one of its adds.. the key thing it repeates over and over .. x86 x86 x86.... and 32 bit 32 bit..
when you see that.. it puts the iconia OUT of its class of Devices to run such applications or OS...
Thanks for the information.. but again i stress PLEASE if you try this stuff and brick your tablet...I will say we Warned ya over and over again...
please dont take this to be offensive but you just DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT OR DEALING WITH.. LEAVE your tablet updates to Acer..

I totally agree .. But i have been watching what intel is doing as well. They can be sneeky . I belive that Intel and amd. WILL soon be pushing chips that can compete with arm .im guessing it will be some type of hybrid apu. That will run in a state to handle static app like programs(for battery life) . that are linked to full blown business network capable programs such as ms office .This will allow on the go Battery life. the plug in to a full blown all out windows Computer experience.. From what i have read about windows 8 Laptops . this is the experience Ms Is currently working on with the windows 8 we can currently run .For most this will never go over well.Battery life and full blown programs NOT NET apps.. that is what PEOPLE Will Have to get TO MAKE Mobile devices work for most Business environments.
Just my Opinion.. But who really knows maybe a alien will bring something even better Giggles.

Windows 8.1 New Version or Big Update?

Hi,
is there something know if Windows Blue will be a new Version you need to buy, or if Microsoft brings Christmas forward and all Win 8 users get the new Update??
For PC it doesn't matter for me, i'll get the new 8.1 but for Surface??
Also it would be nice to know if a complete reinstalle is necessary.
Would be great if someone has some Information about this

Almost surely it won't require a complete reinstall. The are going to bring back the Start Menu in a limited form. It will just be a link to the desktop and not include the full Start Menu. This follows a planned move: a boot to desktop option. Microsoft will add an option to allow users to boot directly to the traditional desktop.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/22/4251610/windows-8-1-start-button
That sounds great. I'm really looking forward to the 50:50 dock
8.1 is interesting. Per MS' new "devices & services" direction, it would've been a paid update in normal circumstances--as also denoted by the "8.1" designation, since only "service packs" were free updates under the old regime. But I agree with others that it'll be a free update, as circumstances are definitely not normal. Win8's foothold is tenuous at best, and the antipathy it has engendered would be nothing compared to the sh!tstorm that would occur if MS decides to charge for this one. I doubt even MS is that oblivious.
As for the "menu or button" thing, it's not cast in stone. We'll see what happens. It may seem a little amusing that such a trivial change is even debated over, but that is how delicately Metro's fate hangs in the balance.
I like the turmoil. Turbulence is good, as it rouses the monopolist and forces it to compete on other than sheer inertia (which there still is plenty of). That usually means a better widget or a better price, and either way the consumer wins.
It's safe to guess that Wintel toys will be cheaper come this holiday season. That would not happen if Win8 was a breakout hit. Thank Apple for its trailblazing, Android for its lowballing, and MS for its usual ineptness. Tomorrow is another fun day.

You can update your windows 8 pro or RT to win 8.1 pro preview by downloading 9 MB from win store then while installing the 9MB pack it will download immediately 1GB or more...
If you are running other vertion of windows (other than pro or RT) you have to download the hole windows 2.5 GB (32bit) / 3.5 GB (64bit)
Hope I helped you

Enterprise doesn't have WMC support (paid add on for 8 and 8 pro)
But the t has other domain level tools and features you'll not need
Edit
8 = 8.1 its just got some updates, it is for all intensive purposes the same OS

8.1 core is not an actual microsoft named version.
Enterprise is basically the "do absolutely god damned everything" version.

I assume you have had a look on the net, specifically

Try running microsoft update several times. I had pending updates that I had to install before the upgrade showed up in my MS Store page. You have to have the latest updates installed before you can upgrade. At least, that fixed it for me.

Hardly a limitation seeming as 8.1, 8.1 pro and 8.1 RT dont have it either.

8.1 and 8.1 pro can have it though, Enterprise cant.
That is a limitation
While we're on the subject, can anybody with 8.1 Enterprise check and see if SUA (the Subsystem for UNIX Applications) is still present in the "Windows Features" (optionalfeatures.exe) or DISM or similar? It probably won't be, but I can't find anything conclusive on that front. I'm quite reluctant to move to Cygwin, but if it's that or nothing, that's what I'll do... as of 8.0, SUA was important enough that even through I regularly use(d) Media Center, I went with Enterprise instead for my home system. If that's no longer an option, I may end up switching back (although I bet it's possible to hack it into 8.1 just as it was possible to hack it into home editions of older Windows releases).
It annoys me deeply that Microsoft cut this useful feature. If they didn't want to support it anymore, at least they could have open-sourced it...
