[Q] What do you think of Windows 8 - Windows 8 General

I was just curious about what you think about Windows 8. So I started this poll to see it in percent.
Please comment about what you think of it

This is a desktop operating system. It does not belong on XDA-Developers.com
They've even said that developers will have to write different versions of their apps for ARM platform because of battery requirements. This will not run on a XDA device and it's out of place on XDA. Desktops are not personal or cellular digital assistants(XDAs).
Please add my option, I'll select it.

Wait... scratch that.... Add in the "I want a Linux forum" and "I want a mac forum"

Stop acting like a troll and get a life. First you need to educate yourself about what XDA are all about. second before running your mouth like a child, research Microsoft's roadmap. Microsoft intend to merge there desktop and mobile operating systems by windows 9 or 10. By then there will be no windows phone. Just one unified platform. Furthermore you already know that Microsoft have added support for ARM architecture already into windows 8, which will allow the OS to be ported to a number of mobile devices. Not just tablets.

XDA Developers have nothing to do with personal digital assistants. When the community was founded as a HTC development forum. The first device the admins got hold of was an 02 UK HTC Device. Back then the O2 HTC devices were branded XDA. Hence the name........

Yep.. cross digital assistant. XDA.
A desktop operating system has nothing to do with a digital assistant.

I installed it on my 3 year old netbook yesterday... Its a preview but its not a great one. Not much works...
What did work:
-IE10
-Control panel
-Desktop tile
-Internet tile
-resize tile move tiles delete tiles
-windows 7 desktop is very much there.
-UI metro? IS basically just skinned over windows7. I have no experience with windows7 so i dont know how close it is.
Did not work:
-most of the tiles that looked fun
-resolution was locked at 800x600
- no options to change resolution
-no microsoft updates. it was there but obviously does not connect to updates
-limited wallpaper.
My netbook is obviously very very minimum spec so the expreince was very slow and sluggish..
I could mouse click to simulate some finger gestures.
Re-installed XP about an hour later

reinstalled xp why not linux? , the only reason i use windows is , because one of the programs as a mechanic needs windows on my laptop(techstream). anything other than that i use linux.
this is my opinion, please do not treat it as a flame/troll post
to each his own.

absolutely no issues here. everything works and work awesome! microsoft updates works and they just released 6 updated today that make it even better i honestly love it... im tired of the same old boring crap

linux lunatics need not apply

I like it and I think it'll only get better. I like what Microsoft is doing, because I feel eventually most of peoples' main computers will end up being touch-based tablets anyway. And the one thing that's kept me from purchasing a tablet is not being able to play with a full operating system. While I feel Windows 8 won't be totally full, I think it'll fall between something like iOS and Android and a full windows operating system to where it integrates well on a tablet.
I do feel they need to change some things up on the regular desktop/explorer experience is it feels more well with the Metro theme.
I'm still waiting for things like Windows Media Player tiles and such that update songs.

I have to say i am supprised that this sub forum is on here just now, yes Win8 Will run on ARM but it doesnt now, and to my knowledge there isnt any available win8 OS that will just yet.
I have no doubt that at some point we wil have access to the ARM Windows OS and that development will begin in porting it in to our devices, but it is somewhat early to be talking about it, it might be even easier than we think, given that MS has a long tradition of dumping gigabytes of drivers on its install disks
Still, it does no harm so theres no point ranting on about it, just a wee bit supprised its up so early, is someone getting a bit too excited perhaps?

I'm not sure if I could use it as a desktop system but as a tablet OS could it work.
I would like to buy a tablet because I like the idea and the portability of them. My problem with the at the moment available tablets is that they are big phones.
With Win8 we could have a "big" OS on a tablet (I know there are Win7 tablets but they are not really good) and that could be really interesting.
I can't vote at the moment because I don't like what I have to choose. "Could be interesting" would be the right answer for me.

Stop saying it does not belong or it is to early for xda whe don't know nothing what windows 8 can do until the final release.. maybe all will be verry surprized

Try it on Virtualbox. Maybe that will work.

To be honest, from what ive read of Win8 it all sounds very good, Metro aside that is, i quite like metro from a tablet point of view but thats about as far as ive gotten with it
It would be ubber cool if they can "clone" a desktop display to a tablet, it would make for an ultimate remote control for a media centre oh and allow computers to be media centre extenders
yeah i know various remote desktop clients are out there but none of them (correct me if im wrong) will also display videos and give the same level of UI response, it needs a hodgepodge of 3rd party tools to get it working and even then with a laggy control.

I think its beautiful

[Q] Porting other OSs to the Galaxy Tab

I wondered if any techies thought it would be likely that Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile 6.5, Samsung Bada, Nokia MeeGo or other mobile OS's would be ported to the Tab. I think Ubuntu Netbook Edition is certainly likely.
Oh, asking "why would you want to replace Android?!" is a different topic.
Thanks
I'm grown to like Android so much as to do things the other way around (try to fit android to any number of other devices), but I think the two most interesting (and perhaps obvious) choices would be MeeGo and ChromeOS.
Yeah, I would definitely be interested in ChromeOS or a netbook linux distro rather than another mobile OS. I bet that there will be plenty of people trying to get linux on it, because people always wanna run linux on everything
What would be PERFECT to my mind, would be being able to dual boot.
Android for when its a phone, and a micro-desktop OS for when I wanna work on it. Stick it on the keyboard dock and add a bluetooth mouse and that'd be sexy. Hell, as long as you saved any documents to SD card you'd still be able to pull them up in droid.
Now all we need is some seriously smart people to make it happen
I don't know why Bada is on that list as it is not really a smartphone os(it more akin to a higher end/smarter feature phone os), and I doubt it would translate well to the Galaxy Tab.
I kind of want to see it running the latest version of Windows CE or Embedded in a dual boot setup with Android. Or some version of Ubuntu(maybe in a newer Mint variant).
Windows Mobile 6.x would be the best alternate.

I'd love to see WinMo 6.5 and some Linux Distro, but my pipedream would absolutely be Windows 98 - I know, lol98, but I would go absolutely crazy if I could run some Visual Novels on it without having to remote desktop.

It's seriously unlikely that we'll see a windows desktop OS on the tab. Its the problem with closed-source code. It'd take very significant patching to get it to run on the Tab, and then you couldn't legally distribute the full OS. You could make a patcher/installer, but it would require anyone who wanted to use it to use full version of windows as an installer.
In all honesty, I wouldn't get your hopes up over installing any (significant) programs that don't come with a desktop OS anyway. Sure, theres no problems with bundled stuff, so you can expect office, email, browser, IM, minesweeper etc. But running anything more complex will start to bring up problems, first due to the lack of available resources (1ghz and 512 of ram is rather anemic) and secondly because its tricky to get things to run on unfamiliar architectures.
In theory, you have the chance to do some really cool stuff (some retro command and conquer on the tab... Or Baldurs Gate) but I wouldn't hold out hope.
But you never know.
Those Linux guys are CRAZY smart. A little win95/DOS emulation later, and maybe you could do whatever you want. *shrug*.
Edit -
Wasn't there someone who installed win95 on a nexus one ? You had to install it via dosbox and even then you could only get to it via remote desktop, but it did run. So maybe I'm being too negative. However, don't expect it to be an easy ride lol. Then again, it all depends on how many of these Samsung actually sell.
If they do (somehow) manage to get up to 10mil of these in circulation then there will be a massive dev community to try and make cool stuff for them.
Yeah, that's why I called it a pipe dream - unfortunately most of the visual novels I'd love to play are windows 98+ even if 95 got up. Everything else I'd want to do could be covered by WinMo (coreplayer is love) and Android (Galaxy native divx decoding <3)
IIRC the Samsung Galaxy S series has sold 5 million worldwide last time we heard - since it's essentially the same thing sans resolution I would expect some serious development stuff going on within a few months... I hope.
If I must, I will shell out for remote desktop software, but I'd really rather not if there's other options. Music on top of other stuff doesn't stream well enough through 3G
Windows Mobile 6.5.X is what I voted though.
Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook remix looks good for touch screen.

Will there be a Windows 8 effort for this tablet since the developer preview is out?

While it will support ARM, no developer preview of the ARM OS has been released as of yet.
Even if Win 8 supports ARM, will the T20 powerful enough to handle it? I know Windows is quite a big clunky thing, no enough horsepower, even if you put it on, it's not going to drive. We'll have to have some sort of uniform performance measure to determine that the T20 is as powerful as those x86s that run Win 8 smoothly to say it will happen and it could be appreciated. But anyways, I'll say, if win 8 actually can run on our Tab, that's only a great news for everyone.

The ARM version will not be the exact same version as what will be running on the X86 platform.
If you'd care to educate yourself about the many different ARM procs that it will run on, have a look here:

Maybe. They were several years ahead of android in the phone market but they are behind there also. We shall see.
Two years ago, the whole computer world has only one software giant, Microsoft, which is the only OS provider, and they know they are the only one. That's monopoly. Even with the phone OS war between Apple and Google fired up so much, it's just some toys to Microsoft's eye, they acted slowly, not want to dump their WinMo 6.5 directly and work on something new, or improve Winmo quickly enough to catch up in the mobile OS market. But all of a sudden, Apple jumped to tablet world, and started to offer something that's simple enough to use and can take place of PC in some leisure use in many household. And now Microsoft can't sit tight, because this directly threaten the core business of Windows. This brought down the price of PC, especially the laptop price, to compete with the new comer, and who benefits? all the consumers.
But if you use the Android, or iOS tablets, you will find it's limited. I can understand that they are still evolving, but the limitation is clear. Some very simple tasks on PC or laptop, became such a headache, impossible mission on Android. I have some excel docs on Google doc, I downloaded the app Google doc, but can't figure out how to copy the whole line, then paste it, and change several fields, instead, in the app, I'll have to copy single field, or edit one by one. I have a lot fields in the line repeated, format the same... So it will be much easier to just copy paste.
After the time, I definitely find the use of a simple Tab, just to view content, but I still dream of having a powerful enough Tab that actually can take over the laptop, isn't that the ultimate goal of the mobile device? So we can plug in a monitor and a keyboard/mouse set, and it will do what my laptop does? We will still have a long way to go. I also hope Google is going that way, otherwise, this windows 8 will soon take over, because many of us have such a desire, and we will go to windows 8 if it can work like that.

A serious Question for us Android tablet users!

Hi All
I am new to the Android tablet world, just bought my transformer yesterday actually, rooted it and tweaked the **** out of it
As being a previous loyal android user, i found myself quite moved and worried about the rumours regarding Windows 8 tablet taking over the market leaving android tablets to die, upon hearing this i asked myself if is this really possible?? Because if it is then what will become of my transformer after a year? For which to buy i had sold my old laptop.
Please leave your ideas and opinions so that this discussion can be carried on.

In a year your tablet will be three maybe four generations old and lacking. That said it will be exactly what it is today. Awesome.
Windows 8 sucks. It won't take anything over.. garbage.
I haven't tried Windows 8 on a tablet, but I did try the free preview on a desktop. I am terribly ashamed to admit it.
I installed it on a computer that I don't use as a daily driver and I disconnected the ethernet to keep things relatively safe. Truly, this is more cautious than when I knowingly put viruses on my computer to test out my virus scanner. No joke. After I burned the installation DVD, I wrote "Caution! Windows 8" on it so that I wouldn't install it, thinking it was a linux distro that I wanted to play around with.
At any rate, Windows 8 is a joke. The UI is terrible and it's just a ploy to take your information. It reminds me of Vista and how that was a flop that they turned into Windows 7. Did anyone see the project Mohave videos?. Navigation is not intuitive and the tiles and charms bar are a mess. It's really the stuff that was leftover and fell on the floor. Take all the stuff that iOS and Android never used because it sucked and bam! Windows 8!
In the interest of disclosure, I dislike Windows and Microsoft products in general.
Good Question
This is a good question, and one I thought about myself. Honestly I don't think it would be hard for Windows to overtake Android tablets, Amazon did it with the kindel. I love my transformer and the OP it has basically replaced my laptop in a lot of ways. But honestly, up to this point I haven't seen anything that would suggest Google can compete well against Windows Amazon or Apple. The update process on Android is ridiculous, and developer support although improving is lacking. Google won't put some sort of QC process and organization on the market so tablet specific apps are hard to find. All of these things are off putting to casual consumers and usually why they choose other OS's. That said, all this can be improved and I think Android tablets will sell more but until then I'm keeping my eye on Windows 8. If they can offer me the same functionality with usb ports, user upgraded memory at a resonable price I might consider a Windows tablet.
I also have the Win8 Consumer Preview installed.
It is an interesting blend of a traditional OS and a tablet OS, but it is still not going to take over Android IMO.
There is still a lot of unknowns. Even if Windows tablets take off, the low powered Tegra variety will probably have issues running full software (like Office) since it is designed for x86 and x64 processors. I know the Atom processors struggled with this for a while.
In general, I will be sticking with Windows 7 because the metro UI is not what I want in a desktop OS. Even for a tablet OS, I still prefer Android.

Probably should have asked this question the day before yesterday.
I wouldn't rule out Microsoft, I have Windows 8 running on an Acer W500 tablet and although it is not quite ready for prime time, the fact that I can run Office 10, surf any site I want, etc. makes it pretty darn useful compared to Android or iOs. It's almost like iOS has the perfect consumption device for people who are just going to surf a bit and do some light stuff, while Windows 8 could handle that plus serious business stuff. I worry about Android's survival because of the lack of control by Google. Between vendors fighting to see who can put out the cheapest tablet, phone carriers and vendors modifying the heck out of it to "differentiate" themselves, and the inability to predict when or if a particular unit will get an update I can't see too many regular people picking an Android tablet compared to iOS or WIndows 8. By the way, that doesn't apply to the people on this forum who are by definition people who enjoy tinkering with their tablets, but if you start talking to the vast majority of the population about rooting, adb, etc. their eyes will glass over. A small vocal minority makes for a neat foruum experience, but it doesn't keep an operating system alive.
I honestly don't see how windows 8 will capture the hearts of the public with the tiles instead of icons. Icons have become so popular because they take advantage of people's natural ability to recognize shapes and patterns at a glance. With tiles, everything looks the same at a glance. I tried out windows 8 and I very quickly found myself having to concentrate more just to see which tile belong to what app. It was annoying as hell.
I tried wp7 and i must say it feels the same as it looks, blocky as hell and windows 8 looks the same. I love android because i can customize it, install whatever i want, root it, flash it, is fast, lots of updates, innovations etc.
I <3 windows on my pc, but <3 Android on my mobile devices and i think it will remain like that for a long time.
I find it hilarious that people are bashing Windows 8 so much. Reminds me of the Win7 beta and RC days.
EDIT: It also reminds me of the jump from Office 2003 to Office 2007/2010. Or jumping from XP to Win7. Familiarity can be a *****; change is good.

If windows 8 tablets run on an x86 platform then you'll be able to run all windows apps including games on it so I could see them taking a chunk out of the existing laptop/tablet market.

I love my Android tablet but it can't totally replace a PC yet. I've been thinking about the ASUS Eee Slate for a while. Price and the fact that Windows 7 is not really tablet optimized has held me back (plus my dismal experience with ASUS RMA's didn't help much). A well made tablet with a tablet optimized OS and a Wacom stylus interests me. I draw and need an office program to do schoolwork.

Believe it or not, I'm very excited about windows 8. I really am. My gripe with it is for some unfathomable reason they decided to use tiles instead of icons. This one thing will turn most people away.

With nVidia's announced product schedule, one year will bring about huge changes in the tablet market. I don't think you have to worry about Windows 8, but if the huge juggernaut that is the iPad is not killing us right now, then Windows 8 can do absolutely no harm.
Google isn't going to let Android die. It's Google. What Windows 8 will do is bring more competition into the market, which is always a good thing for us consumers.
What will eventually become obsolete are phones and tablets with hardware that can't support Windows 8 or Google's new Android.
Android, and even iOS, are specifically written for a mobile platform.
They are designed to be energy efficient, work with reasonably priced hardware (OK, maybe not in the iOS case) and were built from the ground up for this purpose.
Microsoft is trying to make their desktop environment fit on a tablet.
It was not designed for the mobile platform, not even talking about the interface, I'm talking about efficiency and lack of bloat.
In order to maintain their compatibility they have to add a lot of (in most cases) unnecessary bloat for the few people that may require it.
I'm not bashing Microsoft, I'm just saying the can't shoe-horn their desktop OS on a mobile device and expect it to compete with devices that were specifically designed for the mobile space.
I think Windows 8 is going to fail miserably in the desktop market. I haven't tried it yet because I don't care to, but from what I've seen and heard it has a horrible interface that makes desktop use a horrible experience. The interface looks like it will be useful on a tablet but Microsoft has come too late into the tablet game and will have to bust their asses to catch up. All their apps for their ARM version has to be rewritten from the ground up so they essentially don't have any apps available compared to Android and iOS which have hundreds of thousands of apps available, the x86 version may have more success since they don't have to completely change everything. Although they do have a lot of work ahead of them because apparently they're ditching .NET and using a new language which developers have to learn, here's the kicker the development tools aren't even finished yet!
I don't think we have a lot to worry about considering that the iPad hasn't killed the Android tablet yet. I think a lot of people are going to get Windows 8 and see how much of a clusterfuck it is and wish they had never spent the money on it. Windows has always been a dirty OS that requires Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software to keep it usable, do you really want to have to use that stuff on your tablet also? I guess we'll have to see how it pans out. I think its going to be a miserable failure just like their phones are. It's their last ditch effort to stay relevant in the changing PC market.

umm what? Windows 8 does have the standard Windows interface. Metro is basically an overlay GUI. You can turn it on and off.

Stopped right there. Do you expect anyone to take you seriously when you start an argument off like that?
If you had played with one of the early Windows 8 builds, whether it be the Dev Editition or the Consumer Preview, you would've quickly realized that Windows 8 provides the same exact desktop experience as Windows 7 / Vista.
Like I said earlier in the thread:

I find it hilarious that people are bashing Windows 8 so much. Reminds me of the Win7 beta and RC days.
EDIT: It also reminds me of the jump from Office 2003 to Office 2007/2010. Or jumping from XP to Win7. Familiarity can be a *****; change is good.

SDK 8.0 sucks

WTF? if you want to side load apps you have to download SDK 8.0 which isn't a problem, the problem is that you have to have Windows 8 64-bit version... WTF? what if I don't want to upgrade to that crappy OS? There are so many developers and WP8 fans that would rather not user Windows 8. Way to go MS...someone over at MS needs to get fired.
Why not upgrade to W8? You can always dual boot W7 at no charge, so you will have the best of both worlds. Yeah?
Sent from my Cyan Nokia Lumia 920 using Board Express
Upgrade to W8 is 30€ at the moment and running W8 on desktop mode is basically the same os as 7, only faster on boot etc... Why wouldnt you upgrade?
I was able to get the upgrade for 15€, but I think MS made it more difficult to get the discount now.
people just hate w8 because they are either not able to understand how the metro start menue replacement works or they just heard its crap.
Guys, guys... don't get me wrong; I do undestand Windows 8, I used it for quite a good while as my primary os on my desktop and my laptop but since neither is a touch device, the experience basically sucks. I will however consider the dual boot thing or virtual machine but still MS should not leave out those that continue to use Windows 7.

There is no need for touch in Windows 8. Just use your keyboard and mouse.
I find the new interface so much better for mouse than it was before.

i dont care about the layout.. the applications i am using are all the same since xp so i just be happy about the better performance and new features
The fact is tha Win 8 was developed for tablet devices and lather they realized they could force it into a desktop enviroment.
No big deal here.
The real problem is the new Start Menu. If M$ was to remove that from Win8 for dektop and make a distinction between the 2 os's (Win8 RT vs Win8 for Desktop) there would be a faster adoption and ppl would have been satisfied (Especcially Enterprises).
But looking at Microsoft, the situation is so grim...they're 3 years late on mobile, search and social, and so they attempted to this resolution: one OS for all ecosystem. Nice move? Who knows...
I personally use Win8 for wp8 development and the new polished windows and speed of the OS is magic...
BUT ( it's a big but )
Metro is still there. ****. I don't fking need Apps, those are for f'king tablet/toys.
ù
And that's only a part of the problem. Why push WIN 8 PRO + 64 BIT + SLAT (i3/i5/i7) for WinPhone Development??? After waiting for months, devs would have been pissed, and they are indeed. So...Here we are..
Well I pulled out one of my old crappy computers and I am loading that crappy OS on it now, lets see how it turns out. :silly:
There's a technical reason why the WP8.0 SDK requires Windows 8. The new Emulator is using Hyper-V as a basis which is not available in Windows 7. The old Emulator still used code from VirtualPC which has been discontinued for several years. Implementing a completely new Emulator and drivers might not have been viable based on discontinued technology. Using Hyper-V they already had all the needed driver support in the new NT Kernel used by WP8.
So while I agree that it would have been preferable to be able to develop on Windows Vista / Windows 7 (XP was never supported for WP SDK) there are good reasons for requiring Windows 8. The SDK itself is great, perhaps that could have been made clearer in the thread title but the need for W8 is problematic to say the least.

Exactly, the Hyper V is a much better way to do an emulator than the previous one. I installed the wp8 SDK on my office laptop so that I can get hyper V manager installed. I still have a VHD of my old windows 7 OS, which I plan to run in hyper v
I am looking forward to wp8 programming with the new async methodology, should life easier with those in place.
I loaded Win8 on one of my old computers but it didn't go as planed and there is no way I'm buying Win8 for $40 (It's not worth $1). Oh well.
well then you are just not going to develop in sdk 8.
but put the win8 flame somewhere else.

Do you think Microsoft is going to top the big 2 market with this kind of attitude?
Sincere question

Windows 8 is a better optimized Windows 7 with a touch UI added to it for touchscreens, which you don't have to use if you don't have one. That's all there is to it. I think its better than 7 in every way...

To be honest.. yes think this. its not like apple would be much of a difference.
but hey .. people who think they cant use windows 8 because they dont have a touchscreen simply are old and dont want to adapt to new GUIs.
Wonder what they are doing with there windows phones
I dont get the fact that people complain about not needing apps on desktop computer, and that metro is for tablets... Yes, I dont need that either, but I dont use the metro side to nothing else except launching programs. Its only a start menu for me. I have XE.com and weather apps there, but I barely look at them ever. If someone uses XP I get it, but (Vista)Win7->Win8 any day for me. 8 is so much faster and the only difference is the "start menu".

Huh, I figured it was just forcing people to upgrade to prevent vista 2.0.
Guys it's just my personal opinion, if you like Win8 that's a good thing. Maybe if I dish out the $$ for a touch screen tablet or computer I would be more comfortable with it but for a desktop (as far as form me) is a no go. Honestly I've tried to adapt to using in it with a mouse and keyboard but it just feels unnatural. I even installed classic shell on it but I still didn't like it, maybe you guys are right, maybe it's just me but like most of the companies I do contract work for; I'm not in a hurry to switch from Windows 7 and would rather wait for the next installment of the OS.

Windows 8 and Windows phone 8

Hi some time ago when windows 8.1 was still called blue there were some rumours that Micro$oft will merge its two platforms. Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 would share she same Metro apps. This move should give M$ edge over Apple where you could have best of both worlds on single device. It seems now that this idea has been lost somewhere in 8.1 changelog.
So I was looking for revolution but it seems that we will receive just evolution. Oh and for most of the portals major change is the start button! Really?!
You seem to be suffering from some keyboard defect. I suggest you look into that. In the meantime, get back under your bridge.
Hi. Thank you for your reply. My post was to start a discussion about the features of new update and about lack of some expected ones (which maybe still will be announced).
And what was the purpose of your reply?
It was never said that wp8 and w8 would become one and the same. You have misunderstood. Some of the new windows runtime features are coming to windows phone and the services offered were to be merged, but the operating systems themselves were to remain seperate.
>Some of the new windows runtime features are coming to windows phone and the services offered were to be merged, but the operating systems themselves were to remain desperate.
that way I had to misunderstood this (would be a great idea thou). Sort of like universal apps shared between iphone and ipad) I seen few apps which are being announced as both windows 8 and windows phone 8 (check co-pilot or halo) which probably kept me in believing in this. Oh well we will see where windows 8 will evolve.

iPhone and iPad share apps simply because they are the same operating system. The iPad is just a giant iPhone. its the same as how one android phone and another share apps, they are the same thing.
Windows phone and windows 8 are not.
The desperate thing I said above, may be true but autocorrect fail, wrote it from my nexus this morning.

Purpose of his post is that you stop using that $ instead of S.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Oh. I am sorry I didn't know that I hurt his / yours religious feelings.
Unless of course this gentleman refers to his home as "under the bridge" I read his post as simple attempt to offend.
In light of recent E3 news (xbox one- drm management, activation fees, price, Internet connection requirement to work, always-on camera pointing your face and listening all the time which you cannot just unplug) I thing that using $ instead of S is good way to comment the situation.
To end this pointless conversation - unless there there is a XDA rule which prohibits me to do so then please stop trolling and trying to offend other forum members.
Now coming back to 8.1 - is this correct what I understood from brief installation description that if you install this release you will have to reinstall all the programs if you would like to install final release?
"M$" and similar (and I'd apply this statement even to, for example, "$ony" which is a company I personally detest) is most commonly used as trolling behavior online. This is doubly true in a forum devoted to discussing Microsoft products. It's possible you had, and still have, a legit intention to create a meaningful discussion. However, it looked (and to an extent, still looks) like you're merely trying to stir up trouble.
I agree that the XbOne restrictions are nasty, but I have no intention of buying one, and this forum has nothing to do with that product.
The only hint I ever saw regarding merging the app models was a job posting about installing both XAP and APPX packages on the same platform. That's interesting, and does imply a merged app platform, but there's no guarantee it was even going to happen, much less when. To the best of my knowledge, Microsoft never officially said anything to the effect of "we will do this" although there's been rampant speculation since the Win8 beta days.
You are right. I has never been said officially thus my expectations and hopes to see any bits of confirmation during the press conference. When I haven seen any I asked the question here. Still must say I am looking forward this update (probably not for first public beta - if the rumours are true that you will have to reinstall all your applications).
Personally I believe that The Redmond company will need stronger impact to conquer more market right now windows 8 is getting the love it should receive as is being designed for touch but mostly is being use on non-touchscreen laptops and PC. Marked wasn't ready for this. So right approach would be IMO to get more tablet users on their side (look at the latest adverts windows 8 vs iPad). If 8" tablets market is good for win8 is another discussion thou.
But coming back to subject. Has this been confirm that win 8.1 final version cannot be I painless way installed on top of preview?
Cheers
In practice, it's pretty much always possible to do an in-place upgrade via tweaking a few files in the installer or a value in the registry. However, in-place upgrades are a bad enough idea even when they're supported; I really can't endorse doing it on your main system. I may well install the preview in a VM, though.
I think in this case I will rather wait for official final release. Hdd restrictions will not allow me to have more fun on vm. I am already running win8 on bootcamp so no more complications are required
Also partially as an answer to my initial question it has been announced that new halo game for win 8 and win phone 8 will not be a cross buy. These will be two independent apps so no one unified system for now at least.
Yeah, that's been the case for a number of games already. On the plus side, the games *can* still share data between platforms if you have it on boath, and you can earn achievemnts on both... which would matter more if I gave a damn about gamerscore (I've got like 3500, LOL) but some people really care.
Hi all. There is still light at the end of the tunnel (hope it's not a train
