[Q] [question]Windows 8 on Iconia?

Today at Build Microsoft announced that Windows 8 would launch with ARM support. Does this mean someone could potentially port it for the Iconia to be used in those times when a Window based software is needed but neither PC nor VLC is unavailable?
Please save "why would you want to use Windows" comments. This is a mature developer website, send those comments to Engadget.

Anyway, only time will tell if win8 will be ported to the iconia (or any other android tablet). I haven't heard of wp7 being ported to an android phone, so I wouldn't bet on it. Still I can see the potential in it and would gladly try it (especially if it can be made as dual-boot).

Downloaded and installed the "Developers Preview" of Win 8 last night. Remember this is a pre-beta release, and for certain it's in it's infancy relatively speaking. As of this moment in time, Android has a much smoother interface for touch. Win 8 still feels a bit sticky for lack of a better word. I installed it on my HP Touchsmart TM2 2150 US laptop (core i3 with 8Gb ram), so it's not exactly a slouch in terms of hardware. It's a total touch screen laptop that has a screen that folds down onto the keyboard to create a tablet. As of this moment, Win 7 has a much better touch screen experience, but I fully expect that to change as the builds mature.
There are very few apps that come with it (28 I believe), and no app store as of yet obviously.
I read last night that typical Windows apps will not run on the ARM version of Win 8, and that MS is going to do it's best to prevent side loading of apps on the ARM version to keep people purchasing apps, instead of loading them from a USB stick or SD card, but that is just rumor as of right now.
Long story short, you're not missing much yet.

I don't think Microsoft will be releasing a beta for ARM chips and we will see Windows 8 run on ARM only during retail. After that XDA will not port Windows 8 simply because it would be considered illegal.

I installed Windows 8 on my pc a few hours ago. It is very smooth! But my DVD burner doesn't work... Anyway, I would love to see it on the A500.

There's no "might" about it. Microsoft confirmed ages ago that there WILL be an ARM version of Windows 8, and recently clarified that it will NOT run native x86 applications. It's conjectured that that .NET applications should run with either minimal changes, or straight off the bat.
It's also been demoed running on Tegra 3 hardware.

Pure .NET applications should run just fine as long as they're using the same .NET framework as W8 does, but Microsoft is encouraging devs to use HTML5 for anything simple enough. They're aiming for HTML5 support to be top-notch and W8 and to be all-encompassing.
And yes, I concur with FloatingFatMan: why do people even think an ARM W8 would be able to run x86 binaries? That's just plain stupid. ARM applications will run on ARM W8, x86 applications will run on x86 W8, that's that.

There was some rumour that Ms would my providing some transcoding layers as part of the ARM kernel, much like Apple did with the first x86 versions of OSX, but that would be horrendously slow and open the ARM platform to x86 malware.
Pure .NET apps SHOULD run fine, unless MS ship the compact framework instead of the full one. As for HTML5... URGH! (I'm a C# programmer, and after being shafted by MS over first WPF and now Silverlight, they can blow HTML5 out their asses! )

I know there was such a rumour, but anyone with half a braincell should've realized that it was just wishful thinking from people who don't know what they're talking about.
ARM devices are first and foremost mobile devices so an emulation layer would eat horribly on the battery. Not to mention that I am not aware of a single ARM processor sporting any kind of hardware virtualization features or transcoding mechanisms, so the performance would be really poor, too.
And if Microsoft did make such an emulation layer it would be Microsoft that would get all the blame for horribly low battery-life and poor performance because people wouldn't understand the underlying problem. Microsoft saves themselves a lot bad PR just by avoiding the whole thing altogether.

Don't believe it will happen to be honest, There was the same question with win 7 on a galaxy tab. The hardware needs windows supported drivers, if you can't get drivers for windows then the hardware is useless...

Windows 8 is supposed to support ARM architecture, so you never really know.

That's what I've read as well but the driver... the drivers!

Win8 for the ARM architecture isn't even out yet in a DEV build AFAIK.

i Have windows 8 on my HP Dm1 notebook... It runs great.. but as said above its not available for arm . WHEN Microsoft releases it There will be reference drives available for most popular Arm hardware.. this includes our tablet.
But until its released who knows..im guessing it will be mid year before there is going to be a win 8 arm.. But i also think that because of this new intel low power chip.. Microsoft could rethink there arm release if this chip provides what intel is claiming .

Unfortunayely the windows 8 dev release you have on your notebook is no where near what it will be at final release. I'm still waiting for my beta releases to start coming in, and can't wait!

i think you really should go back looking for a forum/ website that takes about the basics of computers and computer architecture.Please do so before you are here asking someone to help you UN BRICK your Iconia .That Site you list. I checked it out..it is refering to the ms install key maker program.. It says nothing anywhere on there about the iconia a500. other then uses it as a way to get you on THAT Site to look and and hope you click on one of its adds.. the key thing it repeates over and over .. x86 x86 x86.... and 32 bit 32 bit..
when you see that.. it puts the iconia OUT of its class of Devices to run such applications or OS...
Thanks for the information.. but again i stress PLEASE if you try this stuff and brick your tablet...I will say we Warned ya over and over again...

I totally agree .. But i have been watching what intel is doing as well. They can be sneeky . I belive that Intel and amd. WILL soon be pushing chips that can compete with arm .im guessing it will be some type of hybrid apu. That will run in a state to handle static app like programs(for battery life) . that are linked to full blown business network capable programs such as ms office .This will allow on the go Battery life. the plug in to a full blown all out windows Computer experience.. From what i have read about windows 8 Laptops . this is the experience Ms Is currently working on with the windows 8 we can currently run .For most this will never go over well.Battery life and full blown programs NOT NET apps.. that is what PEOPLE Will Have to get TO MAKE Mobile devices work for most Business environments.
Just my Opinion.. But who really knows maybe a alien will bring something even better Giggles.

Thank God. Only two editions to chose for x86/64 devices and one for ARM devices.

Actually there are 3 editions, that link is misleading.
Read through, and you'll see there's regular, pro, AND enterprise. But only those two will be available to consumers. Just like vista and 7, enterprise will only be available in volume licensing.

I was really happy to see this, with one exception: That Media Center will only be available to Pro. What the **** were they thinking? Make the goddamn thing available to either version, even if you charge a fee for it. Jesus Christ.
Other than that, I'm happy to see Windows 8 consolidating editions and simplifying choices. I'll be preordering licenses as soon as they announce an early adopter deal

as a matter of fact i have not... i tried early leaked released and was pretty much fine with developer preview... but i hate metroui and would definitely not upgrade in case they decide to keep the start menu removed as they did in consumer preview... its simply not for non-touch screen devices..

Hey guys, just came across this article that compares the features of RT and Windows 8 Pro version
Should I get the windows RT, which will be cheaper and I will get office with it. Or should I get Windows 8 Pro? (I'm aware of the $40 upgrade but this is mainly for buying a new computer)
Will the metro apps take care of most of the computing needs? I only need office and photoshop, everything else is done in browser.

Get Windows 8 Pro. Think of them like this:
Windows 8 Pro includes:
- Traditional desktop apps, so think of all the apps for Win 7
- Tablet apps, apps that you find on the store
Windows RT only includes the "tablet apps."
What Microsoft essentially did was create a system within Win8 where they added a layer where it functions as a tablet and all the tablet apps also work on Win 8. Pretty slick, but a little confusing. Example, an app behaves differently within metro than within traditional Windows... Overall, for $40, if all your apps work with Win8, then it's definitely worth the price.

Errr. Do you have a hybrid pc or something like that? RT version doesnt sell just like this. Windows 8 RT just come within your new tablet/ARM gadget. You cant purchase and install it.
You just have Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise (if im not mistaken). Anyway, Get Windows 8. There is no need to get Pro version.

Use Enterprise if you need wtg if not professional.

Enterprise also allows side loading metro apps a bit off topic for this but worth saying as this is a dev forum. Though i think enterprise is only available to business users (i may be mistaken as i have access to it i have not really checked but i did hear this).

I have downloaded msdn enterprise rtm trial to make my own wtg. When windows 8 releases I'll use pro.

I am aware that Windows 8 RT comes with the device, you can't buy it. But, I was asking if it would be worth it to buy that device with RT or wait for Windows 8 Pro b/c the battery life might be really bad with the Pro version.

I think the point is, no one knows.
patience my friend, it wont be long now and the inter Wibble will be full of reviews to pick over.

Battery life will depend greatly on the devices hardware. According to what Intel claims Intel Atom based tablets will be available with a battery life of up to 10 hours. Those would support Windows 8 Pro and should offer comparable battery life to Windows RT tablets. But I guess we will have to wait until they are actually on the market to answer this.

you cannot buy Windows RT standalone, it only runs on ARM CPU's and is only available preinstalled on ARM hardware, dilemma solved.

Photoshop will not be released(at least in full form) on RT. That means that an RT device is totally worthless.

Photoshop for android is not Photoshop. It's photoshop express, and contains an extremely limited subset of features. Photoshop does everything you could imagine that's photo related. Photoshop express for android just does common photo editing tasks.

Whoops. It's still not full photoshop though, and only comes with very basic functionality.
Also-4MP image size limit. not enough for most pro photo editing.

And that's why ALL pro photo editing is done on a proper PC and not a tablet. This is a joke saying RT is rubbish because of this I mean name 1 pro that will use a tablet let alone a competitors one ie android or ipad. Its like the world has lost the plot and the rubbish I read spewing over the web about windows 8 is some of the worst fud I have ever seen.
If your going for photo editing you need to be looking at least at a pro hybrid but I would say you will need more grunt like a dell xps machine.

I am going to buy the Windows 8 Pro version on release and get the upgrade for £25.00.
Windows 8 is 20% faster than Win7 in following Startup, Shutdown, Gaming, Browsing and general app loading
On top of that security is alot better than 7

is there something know if Windows Blue will be a new Version you need to buy, or if Microsoft brings Christmas forward and all Win 8 users get the new Update??
For PC it doesn't matter for me, i'll get the new 8.1 but for Surface??
Also it would be nice to know if a complete reinstalle is necessary.
Would be great if someone has some Information about this

Almost surely it won't require a complete reinstall. The are going to bring back the Start Menu in a limited form. It will just be a link to the desktop and not include the full Start Menu. This follows a planned move: a boot to desktop option. Microsoft will add an option to allow users to boot directly to the traditional desktop.

8.1 is interesting. Per MS' new "devices & services" direction, it would've been a paid update in normal circumstances--as also denoted by the "8.1" designation, since only "service packs" were free updates under the old regime. But I agree with others that it'll be a free update, as circumstances are definitely not normal. Win8's foothold is tenuous at best, and the antipathy it has engendered would be nothing compared to the sh!tstorm that would occur if MS decides to charge for this one. I doubt even MS is that oblivious.
As for the "menu or button" thing, it's not cast in stone. We'll see what happens. It may seem a little amusing that such a trivial change is even debated over, but that is how delicately Metro's fate hangs in the balance.
I like the turmoil. Turbulence is good, as it rouses the monopolist and forces it to compete on other than sheer inertia (which there still is plenty of). That usually means a better widget or a better price, and either way the consumer wins.
It's safe to guess that Wintel toys will be cheaper come this holiday season. That would not happen if Win8 was a breakout hit. Thank Apple for its trailblazing, Android for its lowballing, and MS for its usual ineptness. Tomorrow is another fun day.

No It's A Big Update.
You can update your windows 8 pro or RT to win 8.1 pro preview by downloading 9 MB from win store then while installing the 9MB pack it will download immediately 1GB or more...
If you are running other vertion of windows (other than pro or RT) you have to download the hole windows 2.5 GB (32bit) / 3.5 GB (64bit)

If you are running other vertion of windows (other tthan pro) you have to download the hole windows 2.5 GB (32bit) / 3.5 GB (64bit)

Not just Pro. Also RT.. But if you upgrade to 8.1 on your RT device you will lose your legacy apps meaning you would have to wait for another jailbreak for it.

The update is greater than 9mb, the 9mb file from the store is just the installer, the installer then downloads something like a gb or so on top of that.

Not on RT lol. We lost our jailbreak and our working drivers for it.

I m on Win 8 pro 64 bit.. So I will get the update of 8.1 or I have to reinstall afresh ??
