After having dropped my precious toy once again (i actually tried to pick it from a table while it was still connected to the charger and it fell from like 20 cm, but on the weak edge... the display now features some nice black pixels in one corner) I bought a HTC Sensation this weekend. It was a real pleasure to be part of this great community and I want to thank all the devs that made the Streak 5 such an awesome device despite the Dell service politics (that really sucks and makes me stay away from that company like for a lifetime). Have a nice time with your devices, dont drop i like i did and best wishes for 4.0 - I still hope you can make it.

I second that. I have had my streak for 5 weeks and have just dropped it onto a carpet and the screen has broken!! WTF.
Just updated to DSC v1.1 as well Ridiculous prices for replacement screens means I am back to my desire HD . Loved the screen size of the streak, will have to save my pennies up for a Samsung Note.
Thanks for help on the forums.
Sorry to say guys, but you really should use Otterbox Commuter case at a minimum, i have had a Streak for 10 months and no screen breakage, i have dropped my streak on a road, yes, a road, from standing height, thats about 75cm or more, and because my beloved phone was in a Defender case, it survived just fine.
Sorry to say (InsertNameHere), using a commuter is NOT enough as it seems - at least it dint help for me . We all know that the device may take some punshes if youre lucky - but if it's just bad luck it can break very easiely.
Did yours break while in a Commuter case? I use both but if i am taking my phone out in a rugged place, i will use Defender, the Defender will definately save your phone from some quite harsh drops, like i say, saved mine from a drop onto concrete from 75cm. Could of been higher, it fell out of the belt holster, so thats waist height, so actually possibly over a metre.
The Defender would have been the better choise for me in the end, but now it's too late. The thing is, that the display is just large and it is not supportet very much by the housing. So it's a matter of chance and g-forces and whaterver you can do against that will make the 'phone' even larger. So the best you can do is be freakin' cautious and dont pick it up from your nightstand half in sleep while its connected to the charger! I broke mine twice during that procedure (saying to self: soooo foolish!) Its just not the right device for me. Even though I really love it...
There is no doubt in my mind the streak is one delicate device, I remember my first rugged handset, hard as nails, a TV fell on it and TV was broken, phone lived to be sold to a builder....

I can never give up my DS 5; it is the best device ever produced.
I am using it with CM7 without any issue or laggyness.
I applied all the necessary patches and the dalvik proposals now it works faster then my friends galaxy tab gt-p1000 and the other friend's galaxy note.

I dont think DS5 is faster than G Note
I'll buy G Note cause it has faster hardware, better screen with spen, 8mp camera and update to ICS with support form SS...
But now, I'm happy with DS5, maybe will buy G Note II next year

Apart from removing all the unused system apps, like stats, updater, use autostarts or similar and disable everything that isn't necessary after start up, you can have about 160MB free upon boot. Also increase SD cache size to 8MB and format the data partitiion to ext4.
i am pretty much impressed... tried that on longhorn miui/combo and i get a relatively free ram of 210mb~
and quadrant advance score (2.x) of more than 1500
Wow I was gonna suggest to just get a replacement screen, since I got one a few months ago for about $25 (brand new)...but I guess since they have discontinued the device the price on parts has skyrocketed.

Warning: Once you do this, the only way to revert is to flash a stock rom. Also, nandroid backup/restore and factory resets will not work as Streakmod doesn't work with ext4 partitions. You lose all your data when you convert. I've used it and it does make a substantial difference in real world performance.

good to know... usually you just need to replace the whole lcd unit only.. no need to disassemble the gorilla glass part... unless that is what that need to be done...
Unfortunately that is what is required , but I have just got another off ebay for £50/$65 that was sold as dead but with 2 weeks of warranty left on it. Turns out the battery was done for and the streak is showing charging disabled. Put a new battery in and hey presto working ok, now running dsc v1.1.
Intend replacing the screens and selling on ebay to recoup some cash and then put the one with damaged screen on for spares. Talk about recycling. Spent £200/$280 but hope to get back £160/$200, so fully working streak with mugen extended battery, cradle, otterbox, spare battery and screen covers will have cost £40/$55. Must be better than a Note at that price
I am sorry all the people who are left without such a great smartphone, what else can be said to relate to your favorite things with care)
I slam my streak at the floor as it shown another break lcd (dead pixel and random colour) ... my 2 year old son just drop it again... and its only like 30 cm height... cost me 100 buck last time for lcd replacement... not gonna happen again... using chinese android phone now

Ok, Just got my epic in the mail. It's charging as I type. I ordered a Realook screen protector immediately and I'll probably keep the one that ships with it on there until that one comes in.
So my question is...What should I do first? I want to customize it as much as possible to keep the battery life as long as possible. Should I root it? What roms do you guys recommend? I'm waiting on a case with a kickstand to come out...so i'll baby it for the first month I guess.
Definitely Root it!!! So many benfits with rooting (Free Wifi Tether,No ADS, Custom roms, Kernals, Get rid of crapware like sprint stuff and more.
Im running andromeda rom with andomeda kernal. I couldnt be happier.
This might be a silly question but if I root it before I activate it will that affect the activation process?
The reason I ask is because I don't have a screen protector yet so I was just going to continue using my other phone until it came in. I know its ridiculous, but I just want to make sure I don't give myself any opportunity to scratch the screen on this expensive phone.
So I'll just play with it until I can actually start making phone calls. Hilarious...adults with their toys.
Just realize the epic uses Gorilla glass.. Unless you continually drop stuff and try hard to scratch the screen your not going to be able to.

search for gorilla glass on youtube.
1st?? Why not make sure the phone works as advertised? My suggestion is to check how the well your GPS and other features actually work. Once you get a good feel for the phone, then the rooting should start...

I am so accustomed to rooting, modding, or putting a rom on every smart phone I have ever had that it only seems natural to start that way from the get go. Besides, I'm fairly confidant that stock performance is going to pale in comparison to what I'll see once I've customized it a bit.
But, you are right I'll give it a go stock for a little bit (a day ?) to get a feel for the device before I start slicing and dicing it.

So, I understand that Gorilla glass is supposed to make this thing nearly indestructible, but I've read around these very forums that people are still getting scratches on the screen. Might as well protect my expensive overpriced phone....Sometimes I think who the heck cares since I have insurance and why bother with a case either?

Getting this cheapo ebay case for the time being until they release a functional case with a kickstand that I like. I read a review on this site here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797833 that gave me some hope in buying the triangular shape case. *Crosses Thumbs* Hoping it will hold me over.
I scratched my screen within a week of getting the phone. I customarily leave my keys in the same pocket as my phone. I did this for 2 years w/ an iphone and didn't have a single scratch so i figured the epic would fare similarly. 1 week and there were little micro scratches all over the epics screen. I had other problems with that phone so sprint exchanged it for another one and i promptly got a screen protector. Hopefully i'm the exception and not the rule.

I do the exact same thing...I constantly put my phone in my pocket with my car keys. I notice every little scratch...they gnaw at my subconscious even when i'm not using the phone lol. I thought the Iphone and epic both had gorilla glass...odd that you would scratch one and not the other under similar circumstances.

Sorry man, it's the truth. I'm not flaming the phone or anything, and i'm pretty sure my experience is a rare one. But yes. I'm a fool who keeps his keys in the same pocket as his phone. Miraculously there were no scratches on the iphone3g after about 1.75 years. In case you think i'm somehow trolling the epic you need to realize i disliked everything else about the iphone and even paid the early termination fee to switch to the epic. BTW beside that one negative experience w/ the scratch and wobbly screen (the same unit) i love this phone.
So back on topic. I recommend a screen protector of some sort.

I'm probably going to root it today...I'll ask again does anyone know if rooting will hinder activating this phone?
Otherwise, I'm just using it as a PMP for now .
Rooting won't hinder activation, however using an aosp rom might. So if u just root and use noobs rom or just leave it stock rom u will be fine.

Thanks! I might just wait then to activate it first before rooting because the main reason I wanted to root is to install a custom kernal/rom.
Battery life sucks on stock so far by the way...I'm getting about 7 hours a day with light usuage before I have to recharge. Admittedly, I have not done much to tweak it, but its a shame that a stock offering from sprint can't hold a whole days charge. I mean what if I wasn't as inclined to rooting/tweaking...I would have to live with the phone like this? Definitely, unacceptable. If I don't see at least a days charge with some light usage on a custom rom/kernal I might consider waiting for another droid phone with a better battery life. I have read some positive results from people with custom roms achieving the battery life I'm looking for so I'm hopeful.
The touchscreen died.
Last night when I used it, I notice the touchscreen has no more response.
Tried to power cycle (I still can use the trackball) and it doesn't help.

hell, give it to me, i replaced my digitizer for 30$ and my phone still does anything i could ever need it to do, and if it cant do i then i can turn on the tether and my laptop can.
replacing the digitizer isn't too much of a pain in the ass other than removing / replacing the glue. i used some heavy duty 3M double sided tape which was just slightly too thick but it'll work until the nexus 3 comes out.
also, might it be a software issue? i've been having random touch screen problems ever since i installed the latest OTA (2.3.4) including non responsiveness and random input.
yeah i used spray adhesive on the tray that holds the led and digitizer, masked off properly worked like a charm
My N1 is showing this symptom too Something bad is coming

lol loved mine too, enough so that although I picked up an sgs2 I still have the nexi, a first time for that. I have always sold the old when the next thing came along.
I feel your pain. Please do give your N1 a proper send off.
However, with that said, granted that our work-horse phones are subject to daily wear & tear, but how are you guys handling your N1s? No reason why a digitizer becomes inoperable due to wear because it inherently has no moving parts. Unless of course it gets scratched or dropped.
I'm aware of the inferior digitizer with its multi-touch issue, but simply turning the screen off/on "resets" it. Other than that, it's still as responsive as day one.
N1s (especially when it first came out) aren't cheap. Gotta handle them, or any smartphone really, with kid gloves. I'm still using the cover that came with it and it has saved my N1 from quite a number of drops.
Bottom line, (modded) N1s should continue to keep up (and in some cases still kick ass) with newly released smartphones if we just handle them with a modicum of care.
this sums it up:

Hey man dont let it go just yet. A power cycle isn't all you can do. First try to wipe and flash a new rom. If that dosnt work use fast boot and restore everything to original including your boot loader. I really hope its not dead. If you dont want to buy a new screen there are people who will, so please sell it or give it away on craigslist, you cant just give up on such a legendary phone.
Well, thanks for everything!
On saturday, i received my 4th LCD from hong kong in the mail, and on sunday i replaced the broken one on my phone. I dropped the streak with my 3rd screen from my lap and onto the carpet floor, so the LCD broke (not the glass).
This time, tuesday morning, i dropped my streak about 10-20 cm onto my laptop - and well, the brand new LCD broke.
Seriously, I'm tired of replacing that LCD, so now i'm quitting!
Anyone else with experiences like this? Is there something fishy about these hong kong LCDs? I've never broken the glass in front of the LCD, but i've always broken the LCD itself...
I can't keep my Streak out of its Otterbox for more than a few minutes. It's a delicate device, I'm not sure why people would hold it and think otherwise.
Not my experience at all that the Streak is a delicate device. It's taken all the abuse of hundreds of pocket removals, an occasional in-pocket bump on railings and after a year of heavy use still looks nicer than my old HTC Touch Cruise. I have also dropped my Streak unprotected - running to catch a train in Japan from a too short pocket to the hard concrete. Didn't see any damage right away and thought wow! It survived. Alas a few days later I noticed there was a hairline crack in one corner of the glass which I could definitely live with. Now I have one of those thermoplastic resin covers on and have accidentally thrown it down on my bathroom tile floor where it did a good bounce and a cartwheel or three - not a scratch anywhere. Awesomely well built is my verdict.

My LCD broke while the phone was in my pocket about 3 weeks ago. Called Dell, they replaced. 2 days ago the EXACT SAME THING happened with the "new" (re: refurbished) phone that Dell sent. I just called Dell and now they are out of stock and the guy said call back after September 21 and we'll help you and hung up on me. I'm very upset with Dell now. IF I can get another replacement, I will promptly trade/sell it for something else.
Ha, I am on my sixth screen. Last time I broke mine I purchased two replacments. Put one in and a few days later I noticed the spare was broken. Heck it was never even out of the box.
At 35$ US for a screen I will just keep replacing it.

Just in case Dell can't/won't replace, where do you get your screens @ $35.00?
I've had almost exactly the same experience, dropped my original screen a fair few times and the most I got was a small chip out of the glass. So I've been through two replacements already, one dropped from my lap onto carpet the same as 'olemartinorg' and the lcd broke and the other half a metre onto stairs and broke the same way. I'm beginning to wonder if the quality of the LCDs from China are any good or the same as the official Streak.

I've dropped my streak loads of times, hard floors, soft floors, from waist height, head height. It has broken 3 times - first time the LCD broke and Dell repaired it for nowt, the second time the glass shattered and i made an insurance claim.
I think its just pure luck that it hasn't broken more. They are bloody fragile, but i think that it just down to Dell's design.

If it's slippery, get a case.
I would suggest buying an otterbox for your new phone either way. It might be expensive but ive had my evo since release and my brother (ever since I got the case) thought it would be funny to show everyone who saw it and says "look! its indestructable" :\ Ass! You might also find that you can actually salvage it by buying a new lcd screen and digitizer glass for under 70.00 on ebay! just tell your carrier you lost it! you pay the same premium regaurdless if you have insurance! then you can turn it around and sell it as refurbished! Keep in mind some skill and technical knowlege of the EVO might be required along with tools if it is not included!
What's crazy is, my wife's Evo has had two cracked screens and every time we took them to the Sprint stores, they only charged us 25 dollars for a replacement Evo (Just the body, no battery/case/sd card/accessories). Are they not doing this anymore?
I've head my screen replaced countless times by sprint (with root) for free.
Edit: not to mention speakers replaced, bezel, camera lenses. All free. Never unrooted my phone, ever. Same root from day after launch.

How many *is* countless?
I'm not trying to be flip, I think it's an important point (only semi-related to the OP, but definitely something that occurred to me lately) : if you're having to replace that many things on your phone, that doesn't reflect well on the build quality of the phone.
My observation, from this and other remarks on XDA, as well as my own experience (below) is that Evo's tend to break a lot. Probably less than other brands, and possibly less than other HTC phones, but probably more than certain other phones also (dare I mention the iPhone or is that just going to get me banned on XDA?)
On my original Evo, which I had less than a year, I had to replace the camera lens cover, the internal ear piece speaker (not the speakerphone speaker) and the digitizer. The last one I took to a Sprint store - 35 bucks was pretty reasonable, but they don't just replace a digitizer, they also swap out a whole assembly from some other returned phone including someone else's glass, LCD, and bezel. The other two jobs I did myself using parts I got on Ebay. I thought I did a good job too until, a few months after I did the speaker, the screen started acting funny and I realized I had screwed it together oh-so-slightly wrong and torqued the motherboard just a little. The problem got progressively worse and I finally had to buy a replacement Evo on Ebay. So much for saving a buck going the DIY route.
And those are just the problems I was able to solve. I also had to live with the famous crack in the bezel near the volume button, various dings in the relatively soft plastic of the bezel, and a down-volume button that just stopped working (too much use in recovery sessions I guess? )
Evo's *feel* pretty solid, and they're definitely not cheap plastic toys, but I don't remember having these problems with the fruit flavored phone I used to have.

just remeber guys/gals I did say you would have to have the specifications. tourque specs is a large portion of this BEFORE you finish your work. This is a highly complicated peice of technology and any wrong tweeking might cause you to screw up your phone. I suggest addiquate research before you attempt any repairs to your phone Also, there have been some instances where the carrier WILL NOT work on your phone if they deam that you have voided the warrenty. I have had this problem before. Again, it is really up to the shop if they want to fix it. Do this at your own risk.

Well, yes, it is a calculated risk. The old rule applies : don't gamble if you can't afford to lose.
To me, it's just a phone, so I gambled (and lost). I survived just fine, but I agree that not everyone would/should make the same choice.

OK. So it wasn't countless.
But
3 screen (2 my fault and 1 the tech installed wrong - about to go for a 4th screen cuz I recently dropped and cracked it again, but this time it's not shattered)
2 or 3 external speakers
2 cam lens covers
And 1 badly dinged bezel (that I didn't even ask for, they did it while replacing the screen)
Never had to pay a dime.
I think the build quality is great. Maybe they could use a better speaker, but I think I was using a kernel with audio gains when it blew (i.e. my fault).
Busted screens were obviously my fault.
And HTC has GOT to find a way to protect camera lenses better. I had camera scratches on my HTC diamond, too, but all the Evo and newer HTCs have an even less protected lens.
I never unrooted. I usually try to make it look sorta stock, though. But the last time I brought it in with ICS, and even had ROM toolbox right on my homescreen lol

Hey guys...this is my first post in here, so please go easy on me. So, i have been in love with The nexus 7 since the day it was released. I have seen all kind of videos/reviews and thought that it is a perfect fit for me. But what i'm scared about is the durability of Nexus 7's screen. I have been hovering over Xda and specially in the Nexus 7 forum and found a lot of criticism regarding its screen cracks and poor build quality.
The thing is I live in Bangladesh, where i wont be able to enjoy any warranties or guarantees(actually I will get a one-day replacement warranty and that's it). Also, it is highly likely that i wont find the necessary equipment to fix it myself. I found only a single case cover for the Nexus which is the poetic brand slimline(Is that any good ? ). Nexus 7 16Gb version costs around $320 here
All this makes me doubt to purchase the awesome gadget and rather settle for the sub-standard Galaxy tab 2 7.0 3G which costs around the same.
But then again...i feel like I wont be able to happily enjoy any other set as i have been in love with Nexus 7 for the last 6 months. So, as u guys can seen that i'm real in pickle. So any advice will go a long way for me. Is Nexus 7 really worth the risk ?
Thanks.
Just don't drop it, any screen can crack that way. Also get a screen protector, the glass does scratch relatively easy.
Fun story. I got an 8gb nexus from the first batch that were made. But I don't currently live in the US, so I ran a huge gamble by ordering one and having my family send it out to me in Asia. Worked *perfectly* until I went back to the US for Thanksgiving. Then, somehow, I blew out the speaker. I was able to get in touch with Google and get it swapped out in under a week, returned to Asia with my new 8GB (no magic upgrade, drat) and we've been happy ever since.
I don't think it's really any risk. The majority who complain about the nexus are a minority of the owners.
Also keep in mind you will hear more horror stories from pissed off owners than stories of folks reporting zero issues

Well that is true and reassuring.
I'd say go for it. As for screen cracking for "no reason", I always wonder just how much truth there is to those stories. I've been perfectly happy with my nexus 7, and it has none of the "so common" problems.

My friend got his 16gig N7 the day it came out and has had zero hardware issues with it. Gotta give credit to magiconthetire as well, he hit the nail on the head. When things go wrong it's the end of the world. But when things go right, you won't even know anything is happening at all.
Also I picked up the Poetic Slim case you mentioned and I really like it. The only draw back is how close the case comes to the bezel on the edges of the screen; if you have big hands or don't hit the bottom navigation bar or top notification bar at the right angle...the case sort of gets in the way. My solution to that is using a stylus for more accurate precision. The stylus also makes typing significantly easier, especially if you use gesture typing such as Swype, SwiftKey Flow, etc.
OP if you know someone you trust in Europe, USA, or even Australia. Get them to buy the tablet for you and ship it out to you. Even with shipping it will be a lot less than $320, if it breaks for something that is under warranty send it back to them and they can return it for repairs.
Cheers Danny

I've only had mine for a couple of weeks and so far no issues here. This is under pretty heavy use as well, as I take my Nexus 7 with me everywhere that I go. The case works really well though, it has a snug fit on the N7 so it doesn't move around inside of it at all, the smart cover that turns the screen on when you open the flap back has worked flawlessly, the hand strap for the back is really nice for using it in portrait mode while laying in bed or for just holding it up during prolonged periods, and the landscape stand is a little tricky to figure out at fist...but works just fine once you figure it out. I'd recommend some kind of sound toggle app for your notification bar as well, because the case does make it a bit of a pain to reach the physical buttons. But that's not really Poetic's fault, the way the buttons angle down with the curve of the backside of the tablet makes them kind of annoying for any case that doesn't have the same slope on it.
As far as stylus' go, I heard good things about this one and it was still fairly cheap...I just got it in the mail a couple of days ago but so far, so good:

The thing is i need to wait for 3-4 months to receive any accessories for the nexus 7. So, meanwhile i need to live with the poetic brand as its the only one around.

This is the case I purchased. Sounds about the same as the poetic, but also includes a good screen protector.

I have dropped mine a few times from different heights on different surfaces and its fine. But if you drop it right it will probably shatter, just get a case. Something like this if you are really clumsy.

Asus have international warranty for it.
Beamed from my Maguro.
If you ever want to buy a case throughout the internet I'd be more than happy to help a fellow owner out and re-ship to you!
I don't want to persuade you not to get one because I love the n7 and think everyone should have one, but i just broke my second one. My daughter dropped the first one and the corner of the screen shattered. I didn't have insurance because I've never dropped or lost a phone or laptop or anything, so it cost full price to replace it.
I had the second one in my back pocket, bent down, and screwed up the screen. My pants aren't tight but my butt put a little bit of leverage on the middle of the screen and broke it. When I turned it on later, the screen has a discolored line through it and a pattern of random lines on each side and no normal picture. The screen glass didn't crack, but the screen internals must have. I paid $50 for insurance so I hope it will be replaced with no hassle.
Long story short, I'll never use an n7 without a protective case again, and I've never used a case on any device.
Thanks a lot guys....I have taken all the advice into consideration and have found a satisfying solution. Gonna wait three months and buy through a friend in US.
Edit : How can I close the thread ?
