It has been confirmed that the SIII support EXFAt out of the box. Samsung uses a proprietary kernel driver that supports it. Wondering if it's possible to implement this on our Note?

Uh, quite obvious, to support exFat on our Notes? It supports files over 4GB in size and works natively under Windows, unlike EXT.

The advantage is quite big actually.
It will allow for files larger than 4GB, for movie storage this is not a luxury.
yes. My 64 Gb microsdcard formated in Exfat works really well on my new galaxy SIII. 10Gb 1080p MKV files play very smoothly.
it would be a BIG feature!!!!
It was the only reason that's I'm thinking to get s3
don't think its possible but hope so

It does, but NTFS is even more of a closed format than ExFAT is, and the SGS3 doesn't support NTFS so there's no drivers to grab.
Pretty sure there is an NTFS module that'll work with CM9, I presume the same would be true for ExFAT.
It still amuses me that people put >4GB movies on their phone. I don't think I've got anything >2.5GB and at a casual glance you can hardly tell the difference from the original BluRay on a proper TV, much less a 5.3" display.

thats only because you have a gs3
I'm hoping for this feature to, a lot of films and programsare under 4gb now but for the ones that aren't I can't be arsed to convert them it takes to long.
I really dont see the need but I guess it would help someone. I guess Im the only guy that converts movies right before I go to bed or while im at work.
I need to be able to record more than 50 minutes of video without the camera stopping at the 4GB limit.
It is so tantalizing to have the solution so near, yet so far... unless I buy a GS3 A nexus won't do - it has no SD card.
Sigh...

It's not about "Note" supporting 64GB card. It's about "Note" supporting a single file above 4GB. Unfortunately FAT doesn't allow to do that.

I'm not thrilled about this. I bought the Nokia CA-75 cable, plugged it in, then realized that the TV out option was missing. LAME.
I won't hold my breath for the TV out feature. The phone never said it had it or would have TV out. If it's that important you could get the captivate for AT&T. I left At&T service is bad in L.A. since the iPhone came out.

I would guess no. Samsung and Spint have said on the record they are aiming for Froyo in Nov-Dec. The consortium to go with HDMI our vi micro usb is hoping for first q 2011 (read march earliest).
Epic has many advantages, but is not a good multimedia export choice IMHO.

How do you figure that? Galaxy S devices play more video codecs than any other Android device on the market including .mkv file and even display the subtitles when embedded. In fact the only thing it seems to not be able to do is 5.1 sound in an mkv file (it does them in xvid, divx and avi though.)
Someone mentioned that they were able to play a 1080p file on it. I haven't tried that one myself but 720 certainly works. I personally want the NTSC video out capability very much and hope someone gets the source to enable it in a future update or ROM or whatever.

By embedded do you mean if they are burned onto the video? Because any device will play subtitles like that. The epic does not play most if any subtitles natively. If someone wants to really play subtitles it will require mvideoplayer from the market.
Man, I didn't realize that 5.1 audio was supported in an avi I am gonna have to give that a try. AAC audio?

Yep. According to some other forums. About the subtitles, you are correct that mvideoplayer (which seems to be the only one) will play the subtitles in the mkv files. BUT....I can't find anything to play the 5.1 sound. Which is really disappointing because if I can pull most of my files at around 2gb at 720p (has to be less than 4gb because of the FAT32 size limitation) they still have 5.1 ... so I get NO sound. I have to then stereo downmix I guess to fix this..but who wants to convert every single video file just to play on a phone. Also, I want to output this..but I can't of course because TV out is missing...until Touchwiz 3.0 is enabled hopefully.
My next quest is to get USB OTG working (USB host), but I would still be limited by the Fat32 file system.
I would like to request devs to port a Galaxy S rom to Nexus S because of the media codec support and the touchwiz interface.
The Touchwiz UI alone is not enough because it misses all the useful additions that Samsung integrated into the ROM.
Buying a galaxy would be the best solution?
Dude it cost me a fortune to buy my mum a "star" god knows how much a galaxy will be!
I know what you mean but I think a galaxy rom would be a big downgrade on nexus....no gingerbread
Porting a galaxy s rom to the nexus s would be extremely hard if not impossible.
As the galaxy s runs android 2.2.
But since its the same hardware there is a possibility.

yup loved the touch focus
cant do 720p thanks to hardware limitation blame Google becasue they wanted to implement NFC crap the pretty much replaced the HD chip and Micro SD slot area.
But yea no doubt NS still better phone just wish we could utilize it for what its worth
I'm running CM and I do miss some things. Codecs, HW accelerated browser, touchwiz, swype... But it's not worth the crap that it comes with. RFS lag and flaky lagfixes, bloatware that's hardwired into the framework, interface lag (no JIT, makes a huge difference). Basically it's not a good tradeoff. Once I have voodoo sound and swype back I'll forget Samsung ROMS.

I'm sure it'll be expensive as hell when it first arrives, but KingMax is releasing a 64GB Micro SD-Card.
There shouldn't be any compatibility issues, since I'd be formatting that as ext4 for use in my Xoom anyway.

Pretty sure that's just a filesystem issue with FAT; since I'll be formatting as ext4 that won't be an issue unless the kernel itself can't issue the block commands, and that's something that's readily fixed.

Hmmm... I am not sure the stability of handling 64GB since it was stated to support up to 32 GB.
I have a dell streak 7 which say supporting it up to 32GB, but my system got unstable whenver I got my SDCard in for a while. (only for a while, not immediately it will be unstable).
It restarts randomly and dead on sleep when I have the SDCard on. I tried to go back to stock on roms and it still happened until I gave up and took out the sdcard.
Based on this experience, I would rather think Android system's capability of handling large external SDCard is not perfect/stable. I may just hold a cautious but certainly happy view on this news =)

... and as a kernel dev, I think you just had a crap SD-Card
The device should handle any card regardless of size really, even without ext4 (the volume limit of FAT is something like 2Tb).
I read somewhere that Android didn't support ext4 on SD card without a custom kernel, is this correct? Seems odd considering the kernel must have ext4 support to read/write to the internal filesystems.
32 GB is usually mentioned by any device because that's the largest size that was actually tested with. Once they validate that 64 GB cards work (which they probably will), they will probably update the official specs.
Just a validation thing.

Yeah, there's probably a misunderstanding somewhere in what was written or read. For all intents and purposes, our internal storage (which has two filesystems on ext) is not much more electrically than a soldered-in SD-Card.
