[REQ] Galaxy S Rom - Nexus S General

I would like to request devs to port a Galaxy S rom to Nexus S because of the media codec support and the touchwiz interface.
The Touchwiz UI alone is not enough because it misses all the useful additions that Samsung integrated into the ROM.

Buying a galaxy would be the best solution?

Dude it cost me a fortune to buy my mum a "star" god knows how much a galaxy will be!

I know what you mean but I think a galaxy rom would be a big downgrade on nexus....no gingerbread

Porting a galaxy s rom to the nexus s would be extremely hard if not impossible.
As the galaxy s runs android 2.2.
But since its the same hardware there is a possibility.

Who needs all them codecs when u can convert videos with Handbrake that work perfectly on the Nexus S.

I second this... most of you probably never owned a galaxy s phone to even realize what you're missing
But judging by the lack of development here and the fact they moved this to general were most devs to even look
i doubt it will happen
wish Eugene373 had a NS

you cant convert a video to get same quality unless you want to take up 12 gigs for an MP4 ive spent way too much time doing this and eventually gave up

the only thing I miss about my vibrant is the camera options and the ability to record in 720p. It was probably the best quality I ever seen for a video camera on a cell phone. Besides that, nexus s, owns

yup loved the touch focus
cant do 720p thanks to hardware limitation blame Google becasue they wanted to implement NFC crap the pretty much replaced the HD chip and Micro SD slot area.
But yea no doubt NS still better phone just wish we could utilize it for what its worth

I'm running CM and I do miss some things. Codecs, HW accelerated browser, touchwiz, swype... But it's not worth the crap that it comes with. RFS lag and flaky lagfixes, bloatware that's hardwired into the framework, interface lag (no JIT, makes a huge difference). Basically it's not a good tradeoff. Once I have voodoo sound and swype back I'll forget Samsung ROMS.

The movies I've converted look good enough. Nothing over 2gb works but think about it......its a phone not a home entertainment system. It works great as a portable device. If I want to watch something in full HD there are better ways than a 4 inch screen.
Maybe when the new Vibrant 4g gets a 2.3 update

Instead of reading previous posts and realizing why it hasn't been ported yet.
But hey, if all of you want it so bad why don't you learn to code for android and port it yourself?

[IDEA] Android 2.2.1/2.3 mix

Hi,
I got a SGS i9000 running on android 2.2.1 and I saw that the Nexus S is running on android 2.3.
Supercurio provided us an nice port for sgs but it is still in early stages.
The idea:
The idea is to mod an untouched NS (nexus s) firmware to make it compatible with SGS (galaxy s).
NS firmware deosnt support all SGS's functions so the easiest way to run android 2.3 on SGS would be to mix NS and SGS firmware.
How to:
If we can extract files from the NS firmware and add missing ones from an SGS firmware it should work (maybe with some tricks).
Supercurio port test http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877800
Info on ubi filesystem http://www.linux-mtd.infradead.org/faq/ubifs.html
Extract and rebuild ubi.img http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php?topic=4032.0
To do list:
Get NS and SGS untouched firmware (can be found on samdroid)
Extract the ubi.img file (see link above, can be done only under linux)
Play with files (after some test of my own I found that every SGS fw got similar files and only a few are used to differency versions so basically we will need the whole NS fw and replace the framework and lib files to make it run on SGS)
Before spending some nights on this I would like to have your opinion on this idea.
Also I posted on the NS forum as first steps are only related to NS, SGS part will come later.
Well im no dev but that makes sense..
If this works, maybe a port to the epic 4g can work!

Are you a developer? Are you contributing? No.
This phone isn't even one month old, it's still in its early stages and theres a lot of choices.
1) CyanogenMod 7
2) MoDaCo
3) TW Bionix
CyanogenMod7 is the most significant one. Even SGS doesn't have support for CM7... not yet, who knows when they will.

Have a working SGS2

Hey Community,
Due to the company I work for being great. They have allowed me to borrow a working SGS2 for the night. So tonight I will be taking requests for anything people would like me to try out within reason. If you have a request post it or PM me
For anyone who has questions about my honesty (not that I'm totally offended hearing there's past issues) here are some photo's...
music quality?
one word, GPS
pics or it didn't happen.
no, but seriously. some non-marketing pics would be nice.
is it retail? (logo on the front?)
Loud Speaker loudness and clarity please.

Gotta see pics. Folks don't want another masumali/hero yu situation
Get a piece of paper, write your forum name on it and take a photo with both the SGS2 and that paper on it. Then we're serious. Btw this is no offense but due to others claiming they had the phone when they didn't
If that's done then please try out the new Hubs that Samsung has integrated, then test the sound quality of the speakers AND if you connect good earphones.
Thx
why not make a video review and put it on youtube? Test the GPS
Please check if the browser render text on websites
if it is the retail or at least the android 2.3.3 version, please do a nenamark benchmark and test some heavy web pages with flash on the browser

Speaker quality is really clear now longivity of this is another question I'm unable to answer. Compared to the Vibrant the loudness is the same but it is a slight bit clearer
I'd like to know how the audio quality is for the phone.

Looks like you got an early pre production version of the SGS II if we look to the Android version. Newer versions of the SGS II run on Android 2.3.3. Anyway, I'm happy for you, I would love to get a SGS II in my hands.

How good is Touch Wiz 4.
What are the drawbacks that you have noticed so far on the phone?
Can you confirm file system and see if the bootloader is locked?
Is there any lag?

Yep, I know. But there are different 'types' of pre production models. There are those from WMC that got Andoid 2.3.1 and you got newer types that run on Android 2.3.3.
So if you run a benchmark, the result would probably be low, because the software isn't fully optimized on your type/version.

Samsung Galaxy II rom for myTouch 4G?

The myTouch 4g is a great phone and I know this is possible but I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to port the Galaxy S II rom to the myTouch 4g I think alot of people would appreciate it. If you guys want the rom from the Galaxy S II please reply to let developers know that you want it as bad as I do!!!!!!! :-D If I was a developer I would port it but I cant. Unless someone walks me through it.......Developers please reply Thank You

Do you mean a touchwiz 4.0 rom? If so, I'm pretty sure there are compatibility issue reasons why the mt4g doesn't have any touchwiz based roms. (I could be totally wrong here, I'm no dev, & welcome the correct answer)... But yea, I think that's why we have sense-based roms, cm based, miui...

If you want TouchWiz, you can download TouchWiz 4 pack for MIUI, install MIUI, and install the pack. It might work (and might not).
Use some Google search to get the files. The pack is 161MB. I believe it's somewhere in Galaxy S or S2 sections.
Thanks Jack_R1 is that pack more miui though? Or does it run just like a touchwiz rom? Cause im not that MIUI friendly lol...
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
This is a complete TouchWiz, except for system menus and dialogs.
You can try to install it over CM7, I believe there were reports of it working.
I remember seeing sense ROM's available for Samsung phones that normally ran Touchwiz. I suppose the reverse SHOULD be possible. Though porting a ROM to a phone with completely different hardware that no other touchwiz ROMs are available for would be a pain. No examples to learn from and so on.
Hmm. Any Devs with thoughts?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
It could be done, but it would be very very very hard and time consuming. EDT at one point was trying to port sense to the vibrant, but that really didnt end up as anything, so I would assume it would be the same porting TW to the mytouch. Im sure the right dev with enough time could get a port working.
sorry i cant answer your question but i have an alternative.
if you just want touchwiz 4 and UI that looks like SGSII, here:
1. flash CM7
2. find samsung theme for theme chooser (can be found here anyway)
3. install the theme
4. install the touchwiz 4 from here
5. you done, simple like that.

The same reason people put CM7 and/or MIUI on the MT4G. Maybe he doesn't want the bloated Sense and would rather have a TW4 GB UI that already has hardware accelerated launcher and much less bloat.
With that said, as nice as it'd be, it's not possible. The list goes on in what you would need to put TW4 on any phone that's not Samsung.

Sense is my favorite non AOSP UI as well. But it's no where as smooth and as fast as TW4. Hell, even the new MotoBlur easily trumps Sense speed wise.

Galaxy S 1 or 2? Because there's a big difference. My gf's stock SGSII is the smoothest and fastest I've ever tried, faster than any custom ROM that I've ever tried. There's no TW4 for SGS1, just TW3.
There are custom ROMs with TW4 on SGS1.
This thing will quickly become laggy if you seriously use it, whatever you put on it. Except MIUI.

i agree there, but i think stock ICS may come a little later.
one of the main reasons why im waiting for the samsung official version is because it comes with kernel 3.x (according to the leaks) whereas most of these modded versions are still using kernel 2.6.57.

touchwiz ui port?

i found app called rom porter in some thread
and i did manufacturer port with that of s4 stock rom no mods nothing will the port that i made will boot because i'm afraid if that bricked my phone
and dont know anything about porting or someother stuff
but is it safe to flash that rom if something goes wrong what can i do please
i want s4 camera basically all those features of s4 camera so is there any other way i can get that on my aosp rom
and as a base i have used our stock google aosp rom no mod nothing
I guess No. As it requires a different set of framework.
Off-topic: I hope people here don't eat you alive but sadly the most common answer to such threads on xda is: "What a loser, why buy Nexus..Go get a Samsung.. Huh"
s4 camera hardware is completely different than the nexus 4 camera hardware, how do you expect the s4 camera on a nexus 4?? and no, porting the s4 rom onto the n4 isnt as easy as an app, theres much more to it, especially from a completely different phone with completely different drivers/framework/hardware.
