Hi everybody,
I almost always managed to find answers on xda-developers to problems or wishes I had when tinkering with my phone.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a solution for this one and hence my first post:
I always keep a fully charged spare battery with me just in case I run out of juice and I can't recharge.
However, when I exchange the run down battery by the full one, my battery status doesn't change and the phone switches off after a short while.
So far the only thing that works is briefly plugging in the phone with the replaced battery in it which will update battery status to 100% charge.
Obviously, this defeats the purpose of carrying a spare one around.
Is there a way I can force winmo to reset the battery status or another way to resolve it?
I don't mind if I have to rummage around in the registry if necessary.

tat is the case with some batteries.. i have 3 batteries and only 1 that is acting that way.. all u need to do is carry a usb plug.. just plug it in when u are at work or anytin just for 30secs it will update to its full status.. or u can buy another battery so u get at least 2 battery that works..

I will try it next time I replace my battery.

There must be a trigger though when the USB plug is inserted.
If we know how WinMo recognises a USB plug has been inserted (maybe a switch in the registry), we can fool it into thinking it was inserted, and I wouldn't have to carry a plug around.

nah.. its not about the plug.. its more of the voltage.. there is a trigger sumwer in the battery that switches on when you charged full. the thing is if you use a non-official charger like battery clip charger which im using, it is not as smart as the official SE charger/usb plug.. i think its due to the battery being charge outside of the phone too.. in the beginning it was always doing it so i thought my battery is faulty.. but after awhile, even charging it through the battery clip charger i sometimes come up with full battery.. so i got no idea why this happen.. another thing that could help is once u boot the phone up and it says its empty battery/low battery, do a software softreset.. that sometimes trigger the switch and turn on the true battery power for me.. only on stubborn times that i need to use the usb plug.

I understand that in this case WinMo can't change the battery status without at least a minor external charge.
Let me ask you this. What eventually switches off the phone?
Is it the battery's power management chip that cuts further power to the phone, or does WinMo cut the power when the battery status reports 0% remaining charge.
In the letter case I could write a script telling WinMo to ignore the power warning for a predefined time, which should allow me to reach a power outlet.
i never tried tat b4.. but usually if its 0%.. there are times when i used xperia for extensively heavy usage and it suddenly shuts off on me while battery is still abt 20%.. i cant remember if its this battery as well.. since i always bring more than 2 battery it does not really bothers me as i got another battery to sustain.. but from what i recalled is not the windows mob status report warning that shuts it off.. more of the battery power itself..

I guess I'll have to get one of those penlite powered emergency chargers to kickstart my battery for now.
In the mean time I'll continue looking for alternative solutions and report them here if I find them.
Does anybody else have ideas?
excuse my curiousity, but how the hell do you guys get the phone to stay on while you swap the battery? As soon as I take my battery out, even if the phone is in standby, it loses all power and cold boots upon putting it back in and powering on...just wondering as it sounds like a more viable option now to carry a spare batt!

of course you power the phone down in the first place before you swap it. you cannot swap it while its on. well u can and it will turn off but that is pure stuffing up the phone. never do it to any fone as per advised by a sony ericsson repair guy as it stuffed some of the IC chip inside. always power down before changing battery likewise any other electronic device..

hey does those emergency chargers work to jump start it?? let me know if it does.. sounds like a brilliant idea, would be easy to use when u are on the go.. i might get one seeing that they are pretty cheap too..

After several cycles on WP7 the batt was fully drained and now it won't charge (charge LED goes on for few seconds and then goes off). It won't load either, just switches off on DFT screen. Batt is standard.
Guess it is critical not to allow batt to drain fully on WP7?
Is there any solution to this?

Had a similar problem with Android...battery drained completely and wouldn't charge. I solved it by cutting the end off of a spare USB cable, removing the battery, and charging directly from the cable (red wire to positive/black to negative). After about twenty minutes I put the battery back in the phone and it booted Right up. Or, if you have more sense than me, you could just pick up an external battery charger...I'm just the hack apart a cable and do it caveman kinda Guy...

I can confirm a similar experience; I thought it was worth trying the fully-drain-then-fully-recharge regime suggested elsewhere on these forums as a means of extending battery life, which does struggle a bit on WP7.
The fully discharge bit was easy, but it is worth everyone bearing in mind that magldr - as advised, I believe - will not allow the phone to charge. As a result, I was getting into WP7 (just) only for it to almost immediately shut down. But it was at least doing a small amount of charging before it did.
After a sweaty fifteen minutes or so of restarts (I was having to take the battery out to force the restart as it wouldn't start on the power button), it decided it had enough charge to...well, charge and all was well.
My suggestion would be not to risk going beyond the critical warning WP7 gives, at least until magldr is able to offer charging.
Almost the same issue here, without having let the battery fully drained...
I can't charge my hd2 anymore.....if it's turned off.
But, it Can be charged if wp7 is running! I don't know why...
I had This issue when I received the phone. It took me a whole Day to charge the battery the first time : orange LED turning off after 10seconds (HD2 switched off or in wm6.5
Once the led is off, can't turn the phone on or charge it again until I remove and put the battery back.
It was in summer so I thought the phone was too hot, so I cooled the battery with a fan, replaced it, retryed... At least 10times, and it finally charged.
SO weird, I'll test This again with wp7, who knows?
I am wondering whether it is some kind of magldr bug?
I'll try the trick with the cable directly to the batt. It is not very practical though if you drain your batt, where there is no access to spare cabling.

If your battery drains completely, just remove it, replace it back. Without starting the phone, connect it to your PC. start and enter the bootloader. You'll be then able to charge. I did it like that last week.

Less of a bug and more of an unwanted side-effect of having this excellent capability, I think. I seem to recall that the developers are aware and looking to see what can be done.

I guess it is possible to completely drain the battery, in which case this won't work. But if there is some power, removing the battery and replacing it should kick the phone into life for long enough to do this. This was going to be my first try if persistent rebooting hadn't eventually worked.

Like I said, if connected, but not started, to your computer, you'll have enuff time to start it then and entering the bootloader, of course, you gotta be quick for this to work.
If it doesn't respond, don't laugh, confirmed to work, remove your battery like explained and put it for some mins in the fridge before replacing it (it's only chemistry playing here, somehow better than cutting a USB cable in 2).

You know nothing about chemistry at all! Cold kills battery charge if your going to use temperature use your armpit for 5 mins!

I finally made a dual boot Android/WP7.
At first, Android said my battery was fully charged, just like WP7, which is totally impossible as I used MAGLDR to format the SD card (wp7 & android partitions) and that it took me almost 1hour, without any possible way to charge the battery while I'm in bootloader mode.
But when I turned the phone off, plugged into the wall.......TADAA It was finally charging, with phone turned off
So, it seems that dual boot may be a way to solve this issue

You're arguing against yourself here aren't you? Cold may be fine for storage but you need heat to coax a little more power out. You even say 'you need to wait until they've warmed up before using them'.

Wrong idea, sorry guys.
I thought that HD2 was charging since I installed WP7 and Android in Dual Boot. But it's a fake : if the phone is turned off, and that I plug it, the orange led turns on. But that's all, even if I unplug the phone, the led remains turned on !!
And now, Android as well as WP7 are telling me that the battery is fully charged but I'm sure it's not even 50% full.
I need help. I messed up my Droid 2 restoring a backup and the battery died during SBF. So I did the Macgiver trick where you connect an old stripped usb wire to the battery so that the phone can be tricked into booting up and being flashed. Since then I've had a question mark in my battery icon. It wont read that battery or the battery that I've just purchased and I get the "Invalid Battery" message and the battery wont charge in the phone. Both batteries are official Motorola. I can't send the phone back as its not under warranty. So I have a few questions.
Is the some sort of workaround/ fix for this? Motorola put software on the Droid 2 since Froyo that reads whether or not a battery is official Motorola product. Can the battery software be hacked/ deleted so that I can use my battery as normal?
Wow, we have this same exact situation like a month ago, and since then my fiancee still uses her broken phone . We did the Macgyver trick also and we got the battery with the question mark. We even bought a new battery and it still shows it, tried reflashing with a fully charged battery and nothing changed. We also tried clearing battery stats none of it is working. If anyone knows anything about this problem please let us know. If you get an answer that cures your phone please please please let us know about it. I actually posted your question on Yahoo! Answers since it was the same exact problem that we had and if anyone answers we will post the reply on here.

I've got the exact same problem. All I did was purchase one of those external chargers so that one battery is always charged. It is annoying, yes, but its not too bad. I'm also looking forward to see if there is a solution, but I doubt it. We probably all fried the contacts on the phone, but we'll see.

hey, yeah we did the same thing, we bought the second battery yesterday but i have a question, did you try flashing it again with the new battery in? I was wondering if it would work but i want to see if it will before clearing one more time my fiancee's cellphone since theres a fish game that may be lost if we do that.

I've SBF'd multiple times since then, and the question mark is still there. I don't think theres a way around it, unfortunately. Personally, it's not really a big deal, but it may be for you.
I just really hate it because I have no clue when my battery dies.
Never had the issue, but one thing comes to mind..why not root, install clockwork recovery and then clear the battery cache?

The D2 battery is 3.7 volts; USB is 5. You probably blew out the A/D channel used to measure battery level.

Ah, I see so they're hooking up the USB straight to the phone...found it after a little searching...
But i'm curious, wouldn't that only happen if the wires ended up touching the other two terminals, and not just the outer (+) and (-) ones?

No, replacing the battery will not work if you messed up when connecting the spliced USB charger + and - to the wrong terminals in the phone.
I have exactly same problem. I sliced the usb cable to revive my Droid X when the battery died during sbfing. Now my phone survived but Im stuck with question mark on battery icon. I flashed reflahsed and flashed again but no luck. wiped batt stat but no luck. Tried new OEM battery, no luck.. Put the batt in the freezer for 10min but no luck. I ran out of all the possible solution.
Now I just got the external stand along batt charger from ebay with 2 extra batts. I just carry extra battery since I dont know when the phone will go dead..
I would love to find out if someone can fix this issue. I still got 6 mo to go before I can upgrade.
I HAVE A SOLUTION (worked for me):
When doing the "Macgyver Hack", I jammed the USB wires into the battery. This pushed the metal spring terminals out. After that, the battery terminal springs don't all touch the connectors in the phone.
Take a needle, and carefully pull the battery's metal springs toward each other.
This worked for me.
Also, try this:
Remove battery and unplug phone. Plug phone in (without battery), then turn on (some phones will turn on without a battery). After the logo comes up, insert the battery. This made my phone recognize the battery and get into the OS.
Once the battery is recognized and you can boot to the OS, root the phone and get the battery calibration app (and use it).
I have a Motorola Defy, and used the Macgyver hack, then had the question mark problem for days before figuring this out.
jodaboda, Thank you a ton for that. I've been searching and trying out things to fix this and this is the closest I've come.
Although the Droid 2 doesn't boot up without a battery, I've had to the Macgyver Hack to get it to boot. The battery calibration app reads 100% charged when I am using the Macgyver Hack and is showing that the battery is charging. I'll tell you if it works once my battery is charged and I calibrate.
I wasn't able to get it to work. I think there is potential but my phone eventually died and it wasn't able to fix it. That app can measure the volts correctly tho, which means we should be able to get the battery working again somehow.

I don't have a nan back up from recovery but have read on another thread that you can also fix this by doing a restore of a back up through the recovery from a time before you have had the battery ? issue.. several people have also mentioned that it worked for them.. in my case I don't have a back up before this issue so I cannot confirm.

tried methods above, phone wont boot unless plugged in... i don't care i can't tell what % its at, but i do care it wont boot off battery power.

The HTC One (m7) was a incredibly designed device, with one problem repair-ability.
Some back story I created a 5v OTG charge out of cardboard, washers, and a hacked up USB - mUSB cord.
Worked great when I tested it, used rechargeable AA batteries. Well stupidly i crossed the negative and positive wires by accident. The phone instantly powered off. But no smell of smoke or burning. Would not power on and no charge light. Button reset would not work. Completely dead, or so you think!
This could be substituted with a nice power surge in normal circumstances, but I'll continue.
So I took a chance, disassembled the phone and disconnected that battery, low and behold it came back to life.
So there is very good circuit protection built into this phone. So as general advice, if you run it a situation where your out of warranty and your phone wont power on try disconnecting the battery before chucking it for a new one.
Only problem is they are so hard to get apart I shattered the LCD, touch part was ok though which is kinda funny. Anyways I got a whole new shell and screen assembly coming and I'm gonna modify the tabs so its easier to access the inside of the phone should the need ever arise again.

I think the story is interesting and adds knowledge to the forum. I wouldn't take it as a advice, but it does let you know that even when it seems that your phone has been killed by a hardware issue, it can still come back to life. Maybe if he had left it unplugged for some time it would eventually had worked without intervention.

I'm pretty sure the tip wasn't "let's all smash our screens to reset the battery".. it was more along the lines of "you may not be dead in the water if you don't get any reaction from the power button". I think if he were to write a tutorial, "Smash the screen" wouldn't be a step...

My point is that he attempted to fix it himself, knowing it is a hard phone to open.
By doing so he shattered the screen.. this will happen to others so why follow the suggestion.
Would have been avoided if he did not make a dodgy peripheral and instead used known safe charging options..
I would send it in for repair instead of attempting an unknown fix.. Each to their own

I have problem with my Samsung Edge 7 and please if you can just tell me what can be a problem and on which way should I go to solve this problem I would appreciate it very much. No need for step by step solution just tell me what can I do except send it to Samsung repair shop or recycle it. I will take it apart by myself if needed but I don't have a clue which part should I look to replace or what.
So... the problem is that I manage to charge the device one day when it don't want to charge and after that I managed to turn it on. Everything was working fine, didn't try anything much just unlock screen and put it to sleep.
After that I turned it off so it don't consume battery while I would be able to backup my data. When I was able to do backup I turned it on and it powered up normal so I proceed to backup my contacts (export to SD card).
When the export finishes phone just froze and I have to turn it off with POWER + VOLUME DOWN button combo.
After that few times when I try to power it on it just froze on boot up logo and I turned it off that few times with the same button combination as before. Until it don't want to power on anymore. So I tried to put it on charger to see if anything will happen, and nothing did.
I just left it to sit on my desk and I noticed that the phone is heating but I got no reaction at all from the phone (powering on or charging)
The day after when the battery was drained obviously I managed to charge it up again but when I power it on after it got to 100% charge it froze again and there goes same procedure as before (button combination restart, no response, heating, battery dead, charging...)
So now I can't even charge it anymore and I took out SD card to check if my contacts are there at least. But nothing, that contacts vcf file is not even saved on SD card even I choose that option when exporting my contacts.
Now I don't know what else to do since my phone wont even charge or power on and I would like to backup my data at least and then I can recycle it if I must.
So please if you have a clue just tell me where can I look at what can I try to do.

some of sgs has these problem. The motherboard is broke, i had same problem and sent to samsung service, they changed motherboard. I guess it's related to cpu temp sensor, inside the cpu.

hey I also have the same issue, putting the phone in the freezer and letting it freeze makes it so that it can turn on for only 5minutes or till when it drops back to room temperature hopefully this will be enough to get your photos back.

I am not in a possibility to try your method because I disassemble my phone and striped down battery for research purposes.
Neither I think that those 5 minutes will be enough to transfer all my data but if I ever reassemble my phone I will give it a shot.
So... Considering my research and striping down the battery the things goes like this (if someone is interested in this topic):
I disassemble the phone and remove the battery. Battery is connected on motherboard by some connector that I don't know the name or type, so if someone knows I would like to know too.
Since I couldn't find positive and negative lead on that connector (because of microscopic leads) little bit down on flat cable, near the battery, I removed coating and manage to find leads and measure voltage of the battery to confirm positive and negative lead.
By the measurements I assume that battery voltage is fine (~3.7V), but when I connect it to external charger which have built in ampere meter the battery doesn't charge as other batteries and ampere meter readings vary by 100mA +/- I set up to be initial charge. In normal case when I charge batteries amperes only goes down by the time the battery charges so I find this event an anomaly.
Since that is the case I removed the chip (from which the flat cable is coming out) that is on the battery assuming that it is causing that anomaly. Leaving the battery with only positive and negative lead that I connected and also measure and put on my external charger. But the same thing happens as with chip, or what is called, on the battery.
Going further with my research I cut down flat cable from battery chip (electronics) and connect positive and negative lead, I found before, directly on my charger on which I adjust voltage on ~3.75 volts and connect the connector with flat cable back to motherboard. So you probably see what I did here but if you don't the research I want to conduct is that my external charger acts as battery for the phone and I try to power it on like that.
In this case ampere meter shows 0 since the current which is flowing trough the phone is none. After I am sure that this is the case I tried to power on my phone with connected external charger like that and my ampere meter shown a current draw of 100-200mA on the POWER button pressed but the phone doesn't turn on.
So now I need someone with a little bit better knowledge of the phone, batteries, working order and type of connections like this to tell me what did I do right and wrong so I can prove that Ganjax statement, and my assumption, that motherboard is dead is really correct.
Ganjax don't mean I don't believe you or something, I appreciate your reply, this is just for research purposes because I would like to play with this stuff and that is the things that interest me.
And if there is some "fanatic" like that to tell me what can I do next and try or point out what should I do and don't make next please leave a comment and we can discuss this matter together and find out something about this case.
