General information on a NO POWER on situation! - One (M7) General

The HTC One (m7) was a incredibly designed device, with one problem repair-ability.
Some back story I created a 5v OTG charge out of cardboard, washers, and a hacked up USB - mUSB cord.
Worked great when I tested it, used rechargeable AA batteries. Well stupidly i crossed the negative and positive wires by accident. The phone instantly powered off. But no smell of smoke or burning. Would not power on and no charge light. Button reset would not work. Completely dead, or so you think!
This could be substituted with a nice power surge in normal circumstances, but I'll continue.
So I took a chance, disassembled the phone and disconnected that battery, low and behold it came back to life.
So there is very good circuit protection built into this phone. So as general advice, if you run it a situation where your out of warranty and your phone wont power on try disconnecting the battery before chucking it for a new one.
Only problem is they are so hard to get apart I shattered the LCD, touch part was ok though which is kinda funny. Anyways I got a whole new shell and screen assembly coming and I'm gonna modify the tabs so its easier to access the inside of the phone should the need ever arise again.

yeah, great tip, lets all smash our screens to reset the battery..
How about not rigging up a dodgy charging option and use it normally and safely, would be much less costly...

I think the story is interesting and adds knowledge to the forum. I wouldn't take it as a advice, but it does let you know that even when it seems that your phone has been killed by a hardware issue, it can still come back to life. Maybe if he had left it unplugged for some time it would eventually had worked without intervention.

I'm pretty sure the tip wasn't "let's all smash our screens to reset the battery".. it was more along the lines of "you may not be dead in the water if you don't get any reaction from the power button". I think if he were to write a tutorial, "Smash the screen" wouldn't be a step...

My point is that he attempted to fix it himself, knowing it is a hard phone to open.
By doing so he shattered the screen.. this will happen to others so why follow the suggestion.
Would have been avoided if he did not make a dodgy peripheral and instead used known safe charging options..
I would send it in for repair instead of attempting an unknown fix.. Each to their own

i crossed the negative and positive wires by accident too and the phone wos death ,i do nothing ,after half hour power get back and phone turn on normally and work like nothing happend

Dropped my hermes, won't power on. Red light went attached to USB

Ok so I was so happy that I finally got XDA live .2 running on my 1.5 month old Hermes. This site has helped me to no end. Being completely new to the Windows mobile platform, I've made it a point to check the forums here every day and read up on issues/tricks & tips. My utmost respect to the folks here at XDA-Developers. In fact I just contributed some money I was so thrilled. I never had to post a question before.
Short lived :-(
Due to my own stupidity. I dropped my Hermes on the carpeted floor in my office. Now it wasn't a huge hit to the unit. It fell 2.5 feet and it was carpet.
I picked it up and hit the power key (It was sleeping before I dropped it) but no joy. I yanked the battery, waited a minute, replaced it. No Joy.. I've tried lots of stuff
1) With battery in place, soft reset
2) Without battery in place and attached to power.
3) removed battery, waited an hour, replaced battery. No power on. Re-attached power.. No power on.
So long story short, I can't power it up. I get a red light when attached to power with or without battery in place.
I am screwed? I'll cry! I have removed the sim-lock and I am Super CID on the phone. It's over a month old from Cingluar. Do I have any hope of getting it fixed/replaced/someone here suggesting a fix?
Any help appreciated. I saw a post on the red light when charging but nothing so far has helped.
I know they are many genius' here. I'll donate more to this awesome site regardless of getting this fixed. I just hope I don't have to fork out another $500 for a new unit.
What we don't know in your case is whether dropping the device has just triggered the infuriating Red LED issue that will come good or whether more serious damage has occurred.
You say you read a post re this and I assume it was this one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1077622&postcount=6
The one thing I did not see that you tried is having charger plugged in with battery out and whilst remaining connected inserting the battery. Wait several seconds, hopefully LED changes to amber. However, though frustrating it may be worth repeating this kind of thing repeatedly until you are bored to tears! I say this because some folks find that it just seems to start eventually but they've tried so many things they cannot pin down what exactly the solution was.
If it's more serious - which I rather doubt (only 2.5ft to a carpeted floor) then you could try a disassembly and reconstruction. (I'm assuming you do not have warranty) I suggest this as the first time I got this, this is what I did and on re-assembly - hey presto it worked. Did not actually do anything but perhaps it helped with a loose connection or helped discharge the circuits and reset charging function??
Mike
Hi,
had the same issue! No function, only red light - with/without/new power plug, accu - only red light.
My device only layed on my table at home - overnight crash effect...
I had to bring in the device to service...
Now i have a new one with higher s/n and all is good again...
best
bax
Would having a second, fully charged battery help?
Sincerely,
Steve
It's going back to cingular.
Thanks for all the advice/help. Nothing seemed to work at all. Different battery, attching to power and inserting the abttery afterwards. However, I now can boot trhe unit, but I have to squeeze the sides of the unit (Or jam a piece os plastice bettwen the slide out keyboard) and the unit boots. Not very practical.
I contacted Cingular and a replacement is on the way. I put back on the original ROM that it shipped with and wiped everything else. I am Super CID, does this void my warranty? Will they even care? The issues is definietly HW so I hope they just can't power it up when they recieve it back. I'll play dumb anyway if they ask!
Now it's just trying to survive the next few days with either my SE P900 or My S710 (Sniff... sniff.. I want my Hermes back already)
Thanks again to all who posted advice.

Hermes works without battery?

Hi,
Sorry, this is not a development question per se, but is the Hermes supposed to power on without a battery when plugged in with a wall charger?
I get a red light on the top-right, but the unit doesn't power on. Maybe I have a defective unit. I have the Cingular branded version.
defective unit
yes u have a defective unit.
I suggest you box it back up and take it back to the place you bought it as your to stupid to only this glorious phone.
?
I think you were trying to insult me with your poor grammar?
Yes
You can use the phone without the batter while plugged in. You have to follow these steps exactly...
1. get a a glass of whater.
2. wrap tin foil around your finger.
3. plug in the charger and connect it to the phone. make sure you leave the back of the phone exposed.
4. place your finger with the tin foil on it in the glas of water.
5. touch your tongue to the gold batter contacts on the back of the phone and press the power button.
This method will work..
Good luck.
Sorry man this is not possible. I checked just now coz I never bothered to do it before but today i looked on your question and tested it but nope it is not booting up. Just the red light. So u need the battery to use it.
Some people tries to increase their posts on the forum to become members from junior members. So don't mind and don't become one of them coz you are new to this forum so just be creative and straight. Hope u don't mind if u found my wordings hard.

A good answer - unlike some of our "funny" guys above.
Mike
ok fair point, was just a bit of fun, but why would you want to use the phone without the battery installed and just plugged in?
i believe all mobile phone from htc tend to be able to do this.
Thanks beastfellow
Confirmed. Just tested and neither of my Hermes will start without a battery
all my Hermes work without a battery!
I just plug them in when testing them out or whatever as I don't always want to have the bulk of a battery on them sometimes, and they still boot up and run ok. Must be a lot of faulty Hermes out there.
It shouldn't start without the battery as the battery is an integral part of the device. If anyone's device truly does start without a battery attached -- which I doubt -- there's something wrong with it. Also, I'm not sure why someone would go through all the bother of pulling the battery out only to then plug it in and use it on AC power.
Reading some of the questions here it's become apparent that some people try to do really odd things with this thing only to think something is wrong when it doesn't work as they want it to. It might not be bad advice to read the user's manual to learn about how PDA Phones are supposed to be used, and instead of acting shocked when they don't work outside of those parameters just accepting the device's limitations.
I know we live in postmodern times where everyone has the freedom to define their own realities, but some of you take this a bit too far. There is at least one question a day here where someone is upset or confused by these things not doing what they were never intended to do.
hmmm... it may be based on the charger itself. I haven't tried any of mine yet (will check later today) but I wonder no battery powerup has something to do with using the stock Hermes charger (1Amp) v.s. others

You may be correct. I tried with a USB connection as I was reading the post on the computer. Will try later with the charger at home.
I read somewhere in wiki about fix white boot up screen. One of the ways to fix it was to take out the battery and use the wall charger... However, when i tried it, it didnt work... so i juz hard reset it and it worked =) might be the reason why he is asking about the battery thing... for all the spammer with post counts... lol sad
Tried my 8525 with 1Amp charger & no battery. Got red (not orange) charging indicator and it wouldn't boot. HTH!
heat
the only reason you would want your hermes to boot up with the battery is say for example, you were going to use it as a modem via usb.
we all know that the phone doesnt get hot, the only thing that heats the whole thing up is the battery.
So to get extra life out of your hermes and keep it cooler, run it without a battery!
I would surmise that circuitry in the battery (if the unit got too hot) would reset the phone to prevent the thing fom setting itself on fire.

Hermes bricked? Toasted? Need assistance urgently!

Before anyone jumps on me, I've been going through the Wiki and forums extensively, and found just one similar problem. Which wasn't solved...
My HTC TyTN/Hermes 200 won't boot up anymore. It is totally dead. I even can't get it into bootloader mode. Screen stays blank and the LED is off.
Put the (3 months old) battery in another Hermes to test it, and it's at 100% charge.
My Hermes shows a steady red LED when it's plugged into power without the battery in, and no LED at all when the battery is installed. The red LED turns off when the battery is installed while there's power going into the unit.
I've left the battery out for at least an hour, plugged it back in, same results. Like the other guy I tried the "pull power, pull battery, plug in power, plug in battery, reset" trick http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...6469&p=1077622 - to no avail.
Does anyone have any last resort ideas on how to get it to at least come back up to a boot loader screen ?
check the battery contact points on the phone. the hermes shows a red led when its plugged in but without a battery
... have you ever dismantled your hermes? your screen ribbon cable may have dead tracks or not be connected properly
just a test on the opposite side of the battery connectors with battery removed press firmly without putting pressure on the LCD, this worked for me when i had a white screen on power up.
if this fixes the problem you may need to actually dismantle the back and put some flame retardant electrical tape on the back over the existing tape to add an extra layer of pressure and retension

Yes, I have cleaned the contact too, nothing. And the battery is OK for sure, my colleague's TyTN runs on it without any problem.

In fact I have, I have totally dismantled and reassembled my TyTN yesterday afternoon, nothing.
the only other problem may be that when being dismantled you may have damaged some sensitive components, Electro Static Discharge will fry sensitive CMOS components, they do not like it at all, whenever dismantling you should wear an earth strap, any time i dismantled mine it was on a workbench with a static mat and i was earthed through the mat.
but this is one possibility, the only other idea is to swap main board and displays with another that works, finding someone willing to allow you to do this with a working hemes is the tough part.
thats as much all i can think of for now
R.I.P. my trustful Hermes 200
Thanks all for your assistance. I have come to the conclusion that my sweetheart is no longer among us. May she rest in peace.
I have obtained a (2d hand) replacement yesterday. May this one last longer.
I'll keep the old TyTN for replacement parts.
Oh well...

Omg i fried my shift!!!!!!!!

I cant believe this happened to my lovely Shift.
The plastic that separates the USB pins inside the USB port came off long time ago. I have been saying i will try re-attach it with some super-glue or something but delayed before doing so.
So the other day I was watching some football World Cup game on tv and decided to power up my Shift to check up something. I was totally unsighted. Guess what I ended up doing? You wont believe this but I ended up inserting the power pin into the USB port!!!!! And since the plastic was not there the power pin went in smoothly. As fate would have it the wall socket was already switched on.
As soon as I made the mistake I noticed and removed the power pin, straightened one of the usb middle pins that was bent inwards. Tried powering up the Shift but nothing doing. It wont come on; not even the winmo side. Tried switching on even with the battery alone but still nothing. In other words my Shift is as dead as dodo now.
So what did I damage? I understand that in the worst case scenario is a question of short-circuiting whereof I ended up doing a "12V Power In" instead of the usual usb "5V Power Out". If thats the case some serious barbecue went on inside the shift. But then it could just have been a simple case of shorting the usb pins without loading the 12v in. Either way something got burnt.
Anyone got any idea what I ended up frying inside my shift and whether ther is absolutely any hope of resurrection. I love the Shift and the thing was as good as new without any blemish at all......
Regards,
Ed
Sorry to hear about this sad news.
I'm no expert on 'cooking roms' but I can suggest the basics:
Have you tried removing the battery for a few minutes to flush any static from your shift? Give it 10 minutes in your case.
Is there any new smell? If so, you could possible open up your shift and follow the smell with your nose.
Do ANY of the lights flash? Did you leave HSDPA ebabled? does the HSDPA green light flash anymore after attempting power up?

Thanks for the advice. I will remove the battery and keep it out for a while as suggested. There is no smell coming out of the shift. And all the led lights are off. They were onm before the accident. The only light that comes on is the one for charging the battery when i plug the wall charger in. No other lights come on when i try switching on.......

Just as a note, I had something similar happen to a notebook of mine several years ago, and I thought it was wasted. I removed the battery let it sit a few days because I was mad and thought it wouldnt work again anyway and 3 days later I plugged the battery back in and powered on and it worked.
Todays (and even yesterdays by the Shift's account) electronics are a lot more resiliant than people give them credit for.
I wish you the best, but I think youll be ok! PUT SOME TAPE ON THAT USB PORT in the mean time, dont make a mistake like that again, that way when you do get to fixing the port, you'll be ok!!
Best of luck.
Yes a few days without batteries or power could well discharge any static charges that are causing problems. If that fails, you could try connecting EARTH to the USB points to give your shift a flush from the same points where the unintended power went in.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for your Shift...
Thank you guys for your encouragement and prayers during this time of sorrow....
Sure I have taken out the battery will wait another day or 2 and report back any progress. Keep praying for us

Nexus one wont power back on after reassembly xpost from QA. Please advice.

Hey guys, my LCD broke, It was a AMOLED not SLCD, I bought this piece off ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/260900702599?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I put everything back for the second time now, first of all the device doesn't come on, but when I plug the AC power it shows charging light.
I'm pretty sure my old screen is AMOLED..
I made sure all the connectors where tight on the board. any help?
It wont power on, did I break something?
I'm pretty screwed guys, been at it for like 5 hours I'm done for tonight
Here is what I've conluded. I detached the digitizer from the lcd I made a mistake and removed the factory "tape"
Is and in the process the little power button came off.
So what are my chances now?
Can the digitizer be taped back to the lcd? or Do I need to get a new digitizer which includes an LCD? so as to preserve the factory tape?
As far as the power button goes, I'm not talking about the plastic bit, I'm talking about the actual button underneath. It seemed to be holding on my a little thread anything. Is that "thread" a connector or the button functions fine without it?
I put iit back and sealed the phone up, it seems to be pressing. But of course the phone wont still come on :/
Have you tried the "jump start" method for people with broken power buttons? ie, plug the phone into the wall with the battery out and insert the battery. It might take a few insertions for it to work.

this happened to me last weekend when i replaced my trackball. my power button gave out.
That cable is a major issue with our N1s. You can order a replacement on ebay (or other sites) for usually around $40. It is called the flex cable.
The jumpstart method should work assuming nothing else is screwed up. But it isn't an exact science. Usually if you have your charging cable plugged in, you pull out the battery and put it back in, the phone will vibrate after a few seconds and start booting. If it doesn't, pull the battery out and try again.
