Hello people,
I have problem with my Samsung Edge 7 and please if you can just tell me what can be a problem and on which way should I go to solve this problem I would appreciate it very much. No need for step by step solution just tell me what can I do except send it to Samsung repair shop or recycle it. I will take it apart by myself if needed but I don't have a clue which part should I look to replace or what.
So... the problem is that I manage to charge the device one day when it don't want to charge and after that I managed to turn it on. Everything was working fine, didn't try anything much just unlock screen and put it to sleep.
After that I turned it off so it don't consume battery while I would be able to backup my data. When I was able to do backup I turned it on and it powered up normal so I proceed to backup my contacts (export to SD card).
When the export finishes phone just froze and I have to turn it off with POWER + VOLUME DOWN button combo.
After that few times when I try to power it on it just froze on boot up logo and I turned it off that few times with the same button combination as before. Until it don't want to power on anymore. So I tried to put it on charger to see if anything will happen, and nothing did.
I just left it to sit on my desk and I noticed that the phone is heating but I got no reaction at all from the phone (powering on or charging)
The day after when the battery was drained obviously I managed to charge it up again but when I power it on after it got to 100% charge it froze again and there goes same procedure as before (button combination restart, no response, heating, battery dead, charging...)
So now I can't even charge it anymore and I took out SD card to check if my contacts are there at least. But nothing, that contacts vcf file is not even saved on SD card even I choose that option when exporting my contacts.
Now I don't know what else to do since my phone wont even charge or power on and I would like to backup my data at least and then I can recycle it if I must.
So please if you have a clue just tell me where can I look at what can I try to do.

some of sgs has these problem. The motherboard is broke, i had same problem and sent to samsung service, they changed motherboard. I guess it's related to cpu temp sensor, inside the cpu.

hey I also have the same issue, putting the phone in the freezer and letting it freeze makes it so that it can turn on for only 5minutes or till when it drops back to room temperature hopefully this will be enough to get your photos back.

I am not in a possibility to try your method because I disassemble my phone and striped down battery for research purposes.
Neither I think that those 5 minutes will be enough to transfer all my data but if I ever reassemble my phone I will give it a shot.
So... Considering my research and striping down the battery the things goes like this (if someone is interested in this topic):
I disassemble the phone and remove the battery. Battery is connected on motherboard by some connector that I don't know the name or type, so if someone knows I would like to know too.
Since I couldn't find positive and negative lead on that connector (because of microscopic leads) little bit down on flat cable, near the battery, I removed coating and manage to find leads and measure voltage of the battery to confirm positive and negative lead.
By the measurements I assume that battery voltage is fine (~3.7V), but when I connect it to external charger which have built in ampere meter the battery doesn't charge as other batteries and ampere meter readings vary by 100mA +/- I set up to be initial charge. In normal case when I charge batteries amperes only goes down by the time the battery charges so I find this event an anomaly.
Since that is the case I removed the chip (from which the flat cable is coming out) that is on the battery assuming that it is causing that anomaly. Leaving the battery with only positive and negative lead that I connected and also measure and put on my external charger. But the same thing happens as with chip, or what is called, on the battery.
Going further with my research I cut down flat cable from battery chip (electronics) and connect positive and negative lead, I found before, directly on my charger on which I adjust voltage on ~3.75 volts and connect the connector with flat cable back to motherboard. So you probably see what I did here but if you don't the research I want to conduct is that my external charger acts as battery for the phone and I try to power it on like that.
In this case ampere meter shows 0 since the current which is flowing trough the phone is none. After I am sure that this is the case I tried to power on my phone with connected external charger like that and my ampere meter shown a current draw of 100-200mA on the POWER button pressed but the phone doesn't turn on.
So now I need someone with a little bit better knowledge of the phone, batteries, working order and type of connections like this to tell me what did I do right and wrong so I can prove that Ganjax statement, and my assumption, that motherboard is dead is really correct.
Ganjax don't mean I don't believe you or something, I appreciate your reply, this is just for research purposes because I would like to play with this stuff and that is the things that interest me.
And if there is some "fanatic" like that to tell me what can I do next and try or point out what should I do and don't make next please leave a comment and we can discuss this matter together and find out something about this case.

Hello to you all,
My new XDA Exec has developed a fault. It works OK when plugged in to the USB on my laptop or charger but when running on battery will only do so for a short time. In fact a matter of a few minutes.
The battery indicator shows the battery at 100% when charged but the phone turns off variously at 95 - 98%. I tried a soft reset and not change.
I tried discharging the battery using small lamp then recharging in the phone. The battery indicator did show a lower %age 80 ish but not as low as I would have thought. Subsequent charging made no difference and the problem persists. Has anyone seen this before? Any bright suggestions?

You battery is dead therefore you would need to change. You are not unique with this problem. That is common issue for Universal (exec) batteries. For your new battery: dont charge with the USB cable and charge when is completely drained.

thanks for the reply and the info. Regarding charging the unit from the USB port. Does the unit not begin charging as soon as it's plugged in to a USB port? Is there a way to prevent this that you know of? My phone was normally charged for about half it's life from the charger, half from USB.
From what I understand the LI ion batteries don't have a charge memory due to milisecond pulse charging so pardon me for asking but what does the total discharge do for the battery? Obviously it does something but what? (Not doubting you but I'm curious). Is there a away to ressurect a defective battery such as the one I have currently or is it a lost cause. I know some batteries can improve with either heating or cooling by about 20 - 40°C from normal operating temeprature, have you any experience with this?
Do you know if some makes of batteries are better than others?
Please pardon the inquisition but as I spend a lot of time in remote areas it's often quite handy to be able to bodge rig stuff in order to effect a temporary fix and it seems any bits of knowledge help!

Hi, I have the exact same problem...works fine when usb or mains connected but only for a few minutes when on the battery. Usually when I give it some heavy task stuff it will suddenly just blank out the acreen and die.
I'm going to try and do what's suggested on the wiki page about masking off the charge indicator contact with tape - run the thing down and charge up again.
otherwise it's a new battery - not expensive - and plenty about on ebay.

Be Frank I am not battery specialist. Therefore I cant give a deep explanation what makes the Universal Battery having so many problems with USB charging. For my understanding it is the slow charge which leads to Battery overheat. Therefore All the post here regarding the Battery problems suggest not keeping the universal charged with USB. Just search for Post for "battery problems" and you will find few "explanations"
In Regards whether you could reverse your battery issue. From my previous experience I would say the max the you can get back is some 10-15%. However in your case the issue seams more severe as you device turns off by 90-100% therefore I think you would need to order new Battery.
following procedure I follow to drain my battery:
1) Turn off You Phone Radio (important)
2) disable the "Turn off Backlight" and put your device brightness to "full"
3) let your device drain the battery by him self( prevent doing anything with your device during this time. I found starting application, touching screen etc. leads that the device request a pick of power which the battery is not able to provide and turns the device off.
4) after certain time your battery will be to weak to keep the device on.
5) push the "power button + backlight button + reset pin" to put your device in to bootloader mode. (your screen will be almost off just some info like SERIAL or Bootloader Version will be visible)
6) again keep the device in this mode to drain as much you can until you cant see anything on the screen.
7) repeat this point6 few times as sometimes the device turns of but after trying again the button combination you can put it back to bootloader.
With above the aim is to drain the battery much as possible. After that you charge your device with power connection for min.12 hours. I guess you will gain few % however repeat the draining and charging procedure for next couple charging cycle to see how much max you will get back.

I faced the same problem with my battery on Universal.
After a complete drain, the battery wont recharge:
1) Connecting the power cord it starts the boot process, after few seconds the power led ligths in red once, the screen blanks and the boot restarts again and again.
2) Using the usb cord the power led flashes in red without further actions.
I have to throw away the battery, I guess.

Cesare, One thing you could try before given up on your battery. Try to Use your power connection to charge for while before starting up your device.
How much is a new battery?

Cesare, you right when you plug in the device it will boot up. However after while (ca.10-15) when the first initialization complete you could go and switch off the screen(with power button) which takes allot power. Anyhow in your case it is really strange as your device behaves like it has no battery at all. there could be 2 things leading to that.
1) your battery is completely dead ( check with a voltmeter to confirm)
2) or something wrong with your Connection clips (battery and device) you could again check with a voltmeter whether you get any juice on those clips.

I think that the 1st one is the rigth hypothesis. I'll check with a voltmeter.
The connection clips are ok because the backup battery works perfectly.
To drain that battery I connected an optical usb mouse until the mouse ligth went off. Do you think that this action is the reason of the death?

Cesare, your battery my not complete dead but it is to weak to lighten up your Universal. Said that leads to bad thing which is: you can only start to charge battery when the universal has come out of bootloader mode.
I had such case ones, after not using my device for very long time the battery was completely drained, And as you described the device keep booting after plugging to the power. However after certain time ( I think some 15-30min trying) suddenly I was able to start up. I am not sure whether that would help to overcome the booting mode with less power but you could try to take out your sim card and memory card and try booting. ( again not sure it will help)
Guys - a quick update from my previous post.
I was suffering a sudden power outage at about 75%-85% battery power - just a blank screen - power gone. Didn't happen when mains connected, only on battery.
Well, first things first, I thought...dodgy ROM for WM 6 - so I tried a few of them - Ivans, Ranju's and Beastys - no change - still this power out.
Read the posts on this forum and thought - gotta be the battery's fried.

I ordered a new Genuine JasJar battery and installed it - (let it charge for 8 hours) - since then...no problems - no crashes, stalls or blank outs.
I'm running Ranju's 7.4 with spb pocket plus - htc home, etc,
As a point of interest my old battery stated 3.9Volts when I put my meter across it BUT - a voltmeter isn't drawing as much as the universal - when 'under load' from power intensive apps - hence you think you've got a battery putting out the requisite power when you haven't.
This was a real niggly problem to sort out with potential culprits all over the place:
Bad battery?
Bad ROM?
PCB crack?
Hardware Fault?
At the end of the day it's good to have spent £32 or so and simply got rid of the problem totally.
I'd say to anyone who's getting outs or blank outs at 80% power or below - your battery stuffed and no amount of mucking about with ROM swaps, Freezers, charging/ discharging is going to stop it blanking out on you.
I'd also like to say how appreciative I am of this forum with a great deal of knowledge available from so many users across a very broad spectrum of skills and experience. Nice one!

Hey all,
Having served me faithfully for 18 months now, my TyTN has finally given up the ghost. It refuses outright to boot.
Not a splash screen, not a backlight, no response at all no matter how long I hold that power button down.
When I plug it into the mains it displays reddish on the right hand LED, having left it plugged in for a while it stops displaying even that until I unplug it and re-plug it.
I've tested the battery with a voltmeter and the power on the phone with a circuit checker, there's not broken circuitry and the battery certainly generates a current.
Though it's not TOO urgent, as I have a backup phone (Nokia 3220, ugh) unlocked and in use, and it's not TOO horrible as I was about to order a Touch Pro anyway, I'd like to keep it strictly unbricked either for sale or for backup.
Any thoughts on either:
1. What the problem is, I'm absolutely baffled.
2. How I might go about fixing it.

If its only displaying a red LED when you plug it in that generally means that the power sensor has been confused or the battery isn't touching the contacts properly.
Are you using the supplied charger or a 3rd party one/usb connection. The usb and most 3rd party chargers don't deliver the right charge. If its underpowered it may not trip the charging sensor.
Try pushing the battery tightly against the contacts, I had a problem whereby the contacts had been pushed in so the battery didn't connect properly.
Clean the contacts with a cotton bud and isopropyl alcohol (surgical spirits) to remove any corrosion. DON'T USE METHYLATED SPIRITS!!! It leaves a residue.
Thats all I can think of now.

I'm using the stock charger, I suspect I might be suffering a RLOD, but none of the usual methods are working...
I'm gonna see if I can get hold of a charging dock for the battery from expansys or suchlike (unless anyone knows anywhere better?), see if that does the trick, if not, new battery, then if THAT fails I'll have no idea

I have the same problem, and new battery didnt help! anyone got solution for this problem? I menage to charge battery with 2 wires, and phone starts, but it wont charge! i mean orange led is on, and it says CHARGING, but battery % is going down down until it reaches 0%!
Okay so I got my phone about a month ago, I had kept it stock for a week, went to a custom rom, and put it back to stock today.
Reasoning I went back to stock:
So I had been having an issue of not charging when I plug in the charger, the phone would recongized that it had been plugged in by bumping the battery meter to 100% instead of a charging icon. The LED light was blinking orange & green so I knew something wasn't right. I then proceeded to unplug the charger and saw that the 100% knocked down to 6% which it was at 8% when I plugged it in. After I saw that I removed the battery and tried a different battery ( brother has the same phone) and his was at 70% and I plugged in the charger and still the same thing happened.
So after this I have found out that it was the phone that had the issue as it was not charging the battery at all so I then returned to stock rom using my brothers battery and it still had the same issue.
I then saw the middle contact of the three golden contact on the back of the phone was sticking between the phone and the battery so I pulled out the battery and pushed the contact toward the phone and then I insert the battery back into the phone and then place the charger on it and then it started charging.
So now I need to confirm that this was the actual fix. Can anyone confirm that the middle contact is the actual one that charges the phone or was this just luck of the draw?
sorry for the long post but I thought this would be a big deal based on the design of the contacts aren't the best.

On most cell phone battery packs the center contact(s) are a data or temp sensor connection, the power is input during charging and drawn during use from the outer contacts.
It depends on how "smart" the battery pack is that determines exactly what those center contact(s) do. In sophisticated packs there is actually circuity inside the battery back that monitors voltage, current draw and temp on the battery to determine the battery's charge status and communicates this back to the phone over a serial data bus with those contacts. on simple battery packs the center contacts are simply connections to a thermistor to monitor the battery's temp during the charging cycle, so the phone can cut off charging power if the battery starts to overheat.
In the end, yes, if the phone cant get a connection to those center contacts, it likely will not initiate a charge cycle. Attempting to charge a lithium ion with no way to monitor it is just asking for fire or explosion
d0ug's point above is backed up by the fact that several users have had issues with charging and/or booting the HD2 when that one middle pin gets bent (which seems like a fairly common occurance in this phone).

I have also noticed, if your battery is below 50% and your using it intensively it will also stop charging the battery. When the status gets bumped up to 100% the led's will flash between red and green, this usually means there is an issue between the battery being over save charging temp, or a malfunction of the data sensor circuit in the battery. This is built into the hardware of the phone and is a safety measure.
This is from HTC Tech support this morning.
If any one elst can find out anything, im sure there would be people glad to hear.
Too bad the terminal being bent is from having to pull out the battery all the time

I've never had to pull the battery when it freezes. I just hit the red reset button. Is that not working for people?

In my case, I just never have anything pointy enough to press the reset button, at least not as handy as just sliding the batt up and out by an inch or so. I think out of all the soft-resets I've done on my HD2, maybe 2 were by pushing the little button (yellow in my case)
hmm, i just checked my center pin, its still good. Like someone said above, i also reset my phone by just poping the battery out.
Also in the same situation that i usually don't have anything around to poke the reset button. I don't think ive ever actually used the reset button yet. All my previous WinMo phones had a stylus and the reset button was on the outside of the device, no battery cover removal, so the reset button was convenient to use. Battery removal seems like the simplest thing to do, if you're already removing the battery cover, just pop out the battery
How often are you guys having to reset your phones that way that you are damaging the pin, are you rocking the battery into it, or kind of just pushing it in? i noticed that the contacts seem to only fold down, they don't fold up or push in.
Ill definitely keep in mind now to put the battery in with a slightly downward motion to make sure the pins fold down, and don't get mashed in, which is where im guessing the bending is happening for you guys
My left pin got bent from all the battery pulls I've been doing. I think it happens when you don't slide it in at the right angle as d0ug has suggested. Now every time I do it, I make sure that all the pins are contacting correctly. If my left pin gets bent outward, the phone does not power up at all. (which made me freak out thinkin I broke it) Both stock and cooked ROMs have required battery pulls occasionally. Overall, I think I have to do battery pulls WAY WAY WAY more than I did with my previous MT3G. So far I have tried Kumars and Elegancia ROMs. I wish I could find a stable ROM that requires zero battery pulls. =T
yupp had the same problem with the connectors under the battery
I went in for a refurb and used it for a day and that pin was already bent so i went back in and this one seems to be in good working condition.
I think they should have done better job with the pins as I have never had these issues with any other phone.

I'm trying out a couple of HD2s that an acquaintance had no business getting and is now looking to unload. The one is practically right out the box, the other looks like it has been around the DC loop a few times. I'm testing the well travelled one out when it looked like it needed charging, so I plug it in and start looking at the nice one. After 2hrs, I hear the tramp vibrate. When I go to see why it vibrated, it won't turn on again! It's after midnight, I haven't purchased it yet, haven't loaded a cooked ROM, haven't even run a stock update and it's already screwing up!?!? Since I had two I did some battery swaping then both went into boot loops. Many hours and a few gray hairs later, I got them both working again. I left them essentially alone until today. When the spouse went to sync the well-used of the HD2s, he noticed it needed charging. After almost an hour, he noticed that it had less charge than when he plugged it in. I noticed the charge light wasn't steady, it's flipping between red, green and nuttin'. My spouse, who had already laid claim to this HD2, did as he always does and jumped to the worst conclusion. I said make no inferences until we get home and check this forum. I knew you'd have the answer and you did not fail me! Best yet, it cost me nuttin' to fix!! Now do I point this out as a flaw for potentially lowering the sale price?

My take on this is that the flaw is in the way the battery wants to come out. When you lift using the tab on the left side, it tries to come out at an angle, angling from top left to bottom right, which means the connectors come away unevenly, and since the connector plates on the battery are inset, the plastic of the battery casing catches the pins as the battery rotates on its way up.
I keep my thumb on the battery just above the sim card until the battery is out about 45 degrees both top left and top right, and then pull it towards the top of the phone so the connectors all come away evenly, rather than being dragged up and over the pins.
Yesterday, before going to sleep I checked my mail and layed my phone next to me. This morning I grab my phone but it doesn't respond. I just charged it for an hour but still no response... Any suggestions
Remove & install battery, then boot up again?

Don't want to bring you down but It sort of happened the same for me, I went to sleep with 85% batt, plugged the charger went to bet, next moring tried to tur on, nothing, charger was still on, tried pulling te batt out, turn on no luck. Still haven't been able to figure it out but I know my streak won't charge the battery so I'm charging the batt outside the streak ordered a second batt so no way to test cable/battery ATM, so far can't say if it's the battery but it don't look like the battery is the problem. forgot to mention, a couple of times I saw the empty battery icon, so i used a BB Bold battery to jump start the phone (just making sure the streak was ok heh), only thing I can think off is that there was a power surge of some sort and took the charging IC with it. The cable works fine for sync and x-fer files but charging is a NO go. it goes as far as telling where the power source is coming (USB/AC) but thats about it. no charge.
so before reaching my conclution i say make sure the metal contacts are touching the battery, make sure the battery has charge if you are an avid electronics guy I say check voltage on the battery and see how is that doing. I've read a lot lately to see what can be my problem and there is one tiny hope that the battery might have triggered it's security gimmick and it won't take charge the "smart" way and that is why I have to use a Li-ION "desk" charger. But I don't know that much of batteries.
I hope it guides you towards what might be happening. Not a solution but you're not alone.

LOL, I realized you fixed the problem. nice one!
when you have a lot of applications running which consume a lot of battery you will notice the streak is going to tell you the charger is invalid. infact there is more powerdrainage then charging capacity. this shouldnt happen with the dell adapter which delivers 1 ampere at 5v instead of the pc which gives 500mA.
if this happens to you one time that the device wont turn on or do anything anymore unplug it from AC and detach the usb cable . then attach the usb cable to the pc and stick the other side in the device and wait for it to show desktop, should be no longer then 30 secs for it to show. (you need the dell sync software and drivers being installed)
Dell Streak 7 won't power on or off
Had my 7 for a few days now, the screen was intermittently not responding so I checked out a few forums - decided to calibrate the screen - so powered it off and then powered it back on holding the power button and the + and - volume simultaneously. Now it won't power back on properly - I just the the soft buttons lighting up. It also won't power off. I have plugged into the ac power charger and the power light does not go on at all (orange or green). It had pretty much a full battery when all this happend about 10 minutes ago.
Fixed it - buy pressing the hard reset button adjacent to the SD card slot. Now working well.
So, I plugged my Nexus 4 into a generic car charger and it went black instantly. The battery was at about 92%. With the hope that a proper AC or computer USB charge connection would bring up the white battery icon and fix things, I stopped by an out of town T-mobile. The manager tried the button battery-reset (up volume + power for 60sec) and I googled alternatives and tried the - enter recovery by pressing those buttons for 15sec off the charger and connecting while still holding down the buttons - trick. Neither worked.
The manger seemed familiar with that and the other button pressing tricks, and said that really, my only real hope would be to reset/replace the battery, but that would void my warranty. However, although the T-mobile site claims my Google bought phone is under warranty (and I've been paying for it each month), technically, it isn't. Under them or Google (any more). So, I purchased the tools to open the phone, as well as a replacement battery. In the interim, I tried to use all the button combos and various charging connections to get it to come back to life. I *did* manage to get it charging the old battery. I know because the blinking red light turned constant for an hour or two, and the battery got warm. I can only guess that the battery was too damaged to keep the charge however, because I could never get it to turn on during or after. My best guess is that the software battery reset allowed the phone to send a charge to the battery - at least once.
After getting my tools and replacement battery, I managed to get the phone open (with great effort - I think there must be a difference between batches there). I removed the old battery connection and looked to see if I could get the charge icon with it unattached and on the charger. I couldn't. Reconnecting the old battery didn't seem to make any difference.
I was about to go through the process of prying up the old battery when I realized that you can actually connect the new battery to the board connector without getting the old one out. So I did that. Leaving it charging like that for awhile didn't do anything, so I decided to do another software battery reset and I'm letting it sit on the charger overnight. All of this has been without reattaching the back.
So my major question is - does anyone know for sure if the phone actually charges the battery with the back off? I know there are important circuits there - which seem to shut down the phone after the battery or google image when not detected (at least that's my deducement after reading posts). But are those connections also used in charging? The Qi goes though the back to the charger function, so perhaps that connection has to be there? I would like to try and find out though beforehand. It took 2 hours and two mangled guitar picks to get it open the first time, and the second may be just as trying. (And believe me, towards the end, I was not concerned with being gentle.)
I am also curious about the four prong battery connection. I've seen the post about charging the battery using external sources by connecting to the two outer pins. Does that mean the two inner pins constitute a second circuit between the charged battery and the phone? And if I find another 3.8v battery fully charged, I could perhaps connect that to the phone instead by wires and get it booted into recovery? As to why I'd want to do that, I don't recall the last dated CM version I had installed, so finding that in their folder plus pulling off everything from /data... assuming I replaced this with another Nexus 4, I might be able to save myself a lot of setup hassle.

I RAN INTO A SIMILAR PROBLEM
I found that holding the power button for a while allowed my nexus 4 running stock Lollipop 5.1 to boot back up.
Have considered that you may have a faulty USB port ?
Just pop the old battery out install the new one plug in the charger and it will charge. You can boot up without the back on. The back contains the antennia.... and the NFC circuit board.

Well, still no luck. I ended up putting the new battery in and closing it up to try the Qi charger, but all I can get is either 7 or 10 red blinks followed by a short solid light. No white battery charging symbol or anything else.
When you say a faulty USB port, what are you referring to? The cable works (though I've also tried my Nexus 7 one too) and even though it won't boot, my computer does recognize that something is there when I plug my phone into it (it just can't figure out what's plugged in - which is normal). I want to say that it's trying and failing to charge the new battery. At this point, I think the charger messed up more than just the battery.
