Hi everyone!
I just got permission from _thalamus to host a separate thread here for his Nexus S kernel developments. This is purely an informational thread and all credit goes to the man himself, _thalamus, for his great work on crespo kernels. Consequently, any bugs you wish to report or any feature request you'd like to make, it might be better to just leave a comment on the corresponding blog posts for that release. However, whenever necessary, I will report any major issues directly to him, but I for one cannot promise resolution as I'm no developer. My role in this thread is simply as moderator of sorts, as _thalamus wants that I keep the thread clean and on-topic.
In this thread, I will include links to his blog posts where you can download his most recent releases as well as some snippets and changelogs when appropriate. Let's make this into a fun and friendly medium of discussion where we can help each other out for the benefit of the community. Links below:

Frequently Asked Questions (or Moaners' Manual)
I decided to make this post more useful so I'll be slowly updating this FAQ as the need arises. For the moment, the item below is just to address the common queries that's been asked in the thread.
Why don't you add BLN/BLD/Vooodoo Color/SuperAwesome governor/etc?
From _thalamus' post here:
Also, the more (unnecessary) garbage I add, the more my kernel becomes a clone of the many slow, buggy kernels on XDA which need 1.4GHz overclock just to run the additional kernel code they have added...
I don't want that, and I'm sure the majority of the users would prefer the kernel to stay as it is, lean and stable because none of the others are.
I don't understand why some users want my kernel project to become a clone of all the other kernels?
I added voodoo sound as a compromise, because I was pestered to death for it and because when I tested it I was actually impressed by the improvement it makes to the sound. If it hadn't made a difference I would not have added it.
Voodoo colour I have no such feelings over, I don't see the point and I don't feel it adds any value to my kernel. The panel is pretty much calibrated correctly and the temperature is correct compared with similar devices with similar panels, it doesn't need adjustment.
If I added voodoo colour, it would next be BLN which is important to somebody else, and if I add that it will be something else, and so on, until it just becomes a crappy clone with the same 'features' as all the others.
So apologies, but the final decision is that I'm not adding it, period.

For those who really need BLN, see a community contribution by madd0g, shared in his post here.
What is the battery life with this kernel?
From _thalamus' post here:
Seriously...I despair of the battery life equals kernel people. I keep saying over and over again that the kernel has a minimal impact to battery life. Some people don't get it clearly.
The only time the kernel could affect battery life negatively is when there is a bug, and there aren't any bugs in the stable release affecting battery life, I know that through a lot of testing myself and testing from others. Any battery life issues you are having are caused by your ROM and apps.

Thanks for the enthusiasm guys. I think _thalamus' kernels have always been lurking here in xda, like in the Oxygen ROM threads, but I feel like it also deserves its own since it's really a great alternative in it's own right.

Thamalus kernel is great but lack of voodoo color is really hard for me. It would be great if thamalus adds voodoo color. I‘m not complaining but this is what i think.

false.
voodoo sound is implemented, not voodoo color.
i only have an i9023 so i can't really confirm on the voodoo color, but i listen to music extensively and i feel like the voodoo sound module is implemented well. i tried other stock-ish kernels like simplekernel but somehow, at least to me, it sounded like voodoo improvements weren't as obvious as in other kernels, like air or matr1x. in my experience, music sounds the best when i'm using the latest experimental releases by _thalamus. i can't really explain why this is, it just sounded that way to my untrained ear.
Thanks, but i've never used this kernel before, and I have heard alot about it (in a positive way)! but what makes it so special??

As my website changed a little I thought it appropriate to make a new post for letting people know that I put up a place for everyone to vote on their favorite or least favorite roms and kernels. My other thread just draws attention to people interested in kernels, and I want to see a lot more votes come in. It really interests me to see current trends like this. Like myn warm! Its got the lead by a large margin. I want to see ratings by the hundreds of users if possible just to satisfy my curiosity.
Well have fun with it guys.

rom rating section
Site updated a little today (12/29), i added cm7 and baked snack (per request), and also the new virus rom for voting. None of their respective pages have been filled out. But I really want to see some votes on the gingerbread builds. I want to know which one people are using as that will probably be the one with the least amount of bugs.

Pretty much once we actually go official, it will make it so you download the updates through the cyanogenmod official site and just get small new features, problems, and fixes whenever there are updates. Probably little things like sensors, call volume, torch, etc will be fixed eventually.

CM7 is great, and works fantastically on my phone. I just really wish a Dev would acknowledge the crazy issues this phone has when on CM7 AND in a lot signal area. I thought my phone was broke until somebody posted in the CM7 Alpha thread the other day.
I also wish somebody could shed light on any and all files in the filesystem that we might be able to tweak our own volume level if at all possible, without having to go through DSP manager or something like that.
Still...here's hoping they crank out some sweet stuff.
I'm not aiming to complain in any way, but why hasn't there been a nightly build yet from cyanogen? I assumed that after jt had merged in the code, we'd be running from there.
Trust me, i'm very patient and i'll happily wait as long as it takes. Just curious as to what cyanogen and jt need to do before they start the nightlies.

I don't think you're alone in your thinking. I heard some phones in the past have been adopted but never actually got nightlies. I think we are just a skeptical community due to Samsung's treatment. On the upside, things are happening on a somewhat regular basis in terms of merging.

Thanks for creating this thread I have been wondering exactly what nightlies are. I have heard it described as like "Windows Update". So are most nightlies just patches or new roms where you start from scratch each time?
Again thanks for the thread will be looking forward to learning and waiting for them to start.

From what I understand, "nightlies" are small bug fixes found in the code during the "day". After a full day of compilation, those fixes are affected during the "night". Usually no changlog because a new one will be released every night. Sometimes one step forward and sometimes two steps back, eventually yielding a highly refined rom. However, I'm sure someone else could give a better explanation. Keep checking for "fascinatemtd" at the link below.

The potential as I see it is that there is a thread that isn't 400 posts long that people, like myself, looking at when to dive into the CM world might get some good information.
Not all of us have time to dig through hundreds of posts to make a decision on the ROM/Kernel that we run on the phone that we need on a daily basis.
You don't have to read the thread, or post on it, if you don't think it has "potential".
Headcase, thanks for putting this thread out there.
I myself have been wondering how long the wait will be. I'm sure others have had phones receive official nightlies, so they might be able to provide some insight. Also, I check this forum everyday and when they finally hit, I'd bet others like me will find out here.
Not sure why those who find something unnecessary have to make their opinion known. What are you gaining by posting then? Your posts serve no purpose other than to annoy those who actually think this thread can be useful.
Have a nice day.

you will need to first decide if you are making it for Sense or AOSP - I would then recommend checking out threads with kernels made by dev's here (such as this thread by Lithid) as it has source links to help you out. I myself have no idea how to compile one, just wanted to help ya out some
I'd love a kernel based on the latest OTA, but with the ability to over and underclock, and with all the governors. I like the latest OTA kernel, but I miss the battery savings I can get with SetCpu.

The very first thing you need to compile a kernel is setup a Linux box if you're unfamiliar with Linux you might as well try to learn to read hieroglyphs cuz that's what trying to compile a kernel in Linux with no knowledge of the OS is gonna seem like, coding is done in string from a konsole no GUI easy to make a typo and screw the whole.code up of suggest getting familiar with some basic source before diving into kernels maybe open up your favorite rom and manually input pvyparts battery bar code then go from there that's a simple few lines of code that need to.be decompiled edited and recompiled

I use full blown linux and I know how to use the command very well...Just need to know where
to get all the stuff at to where I CAN cook up a new kernel lol
Source code at htcdev, or use am existing kernel as base.
Check out existing github accounts and look under commits, sometimes individual modifications are on a single commit and you can see how they did it.
Follow lithid's walk through to get a sense on how to compile a kernel before you start tweaking it. This will also help you get the packages needed to do kernel work. Sorry I don't have the link on my phone.
You can also google how to compile sense kernels for more info..
Remember when you add everything into it, modules, governors, etc..it makes the kernel bulkier, and in some cases slower.
Good luck to you on your quest. Remember to that research is key

So far so good. This rom is amazing! Thumbs up to Team Hacksung!
I'm really enjoying CyanogenMod 10, although I'm really missing having some of the tablet mode apps from ParanoidAndroid! That said, Google Now is incredible and I haven't encountered many glitches aside from rotation being reversed and LED Torch not being able to be a toggle.

1+ Paranoid has a jelly bean hybrid release but it's still in the early stages of development
Is it faster than CM9?

You are not an official person from cyanogen team and they won't provide feedback from this post...
Wait until they consider opening a thread

its called ETIQUETTE the devs do this in their spare time and the only real payment they get is the gratitude of their loyal fanbase

Hmm...I might be wrong, but I thought that this was just a discussion thread. If the devs want to toss their hats into the ring here, that's their choice, but I didn't think that the goal of this thread was to force their hand or make them respond to our issues; I thought it was just to chit-chat about CM10 so that we don't clog up the development thread. Just my two cents.

From my experience, sometimes yes and sometimes no. A really polished CM9 will speed right past this, but Jelly Bean can really shine here and there, and as the devs complete the ROM I'm sure Project Butter will make it super, super speedy.

The smoothness does seem inconsistent (maybe because of the RAM issues) but it always feels more responsive to touch input IMO. When scrolling for example, it'll stick closer to your finger. And the recents panel comes up nearly instantly. When GPS is fixed, I think it could be a daily driver for me. Google Now is pretty sweet too!

Yeah, the RAM issues need work, but I get what you mean by touch responsiveness. I had noticed it felt a little bit different...

I'm using it as a daily driver already and it is oh-so-sweet. I can live without GPS for a bit.
Are you guys enabling"Allow purging of assets"?

It would be nice if the title of the CM10 Preview thread was dated/changed when a new preview build is available.
I'm sure there are several people who tried the ROM found it missing something they needed, and would like to check back in when the new preview is available.
Yes, I know, you can get in, and read the first post. But it would be nice to quickly see, in the subscribed topics, if you need to visit the thread or not.

Does anyone have the issue of RILJ hogging up cause my phone not being able to deep sleep?
Has anyone else had problems with palm rejection? Doesn't seem to work for me (preview 2). Read through the main thread and could not find anything.

Hi guys!
Kernel development is probably one of the most important thing on development (just have a look to Android commits to Linux kernel), so I'm making a poll to check what are your favorites.
Big shouts to all kernel dev's :good:
EDIT: please vote again, poll edited by mod.

I'm focusing on the popular kernels at the time. franco.kernel stopped development, but I like franco work so it's there as a homage :good:
edit: damn, can't edit poll entries lol

Better add Trinity to your poll, if you want to include the major kernel developers ...

thalamus kernel
Nice, getting some results. Keep the votes coming
Matr1x!
I used Air Kernel for a really long time in ICS, so that's what I voted for. I'm using matr1x 22.5 with JB right now and it's OK, stable. Everything else in in a testing phase so I can't really comment on them.
Closed, people get heated enough over kernels, without a focal point for direct comparison and seeming competition over whose favorite kernel developer is the "best".
Also "best" rom/kernel/w.e threads are strongly discouraged as they also have a tendency to turn into big flame wars.
