I would like to build a new Kernel for the EVO...
I know some of the kernels we have for Gingerbread
have been apparently EOL'ed prematurely.
This is for a development of a new kernel but if it
is in the wrong section then please move this to the
right place.
I would like to build a new kernel with ALL the governors
built in them.

Could anybody help with this??
for sense, PM lithid or netarchy
for AOSP, PM Carnairb
good luck, and please include SBC
you will need to first decide if you are making it for Sense or AOSP - I would then recommend checking out threads with kernels made by dev's here (such as this thread by Lithid) as it has source links to help you out. I myself have no idea how to compile one, just wanted to help ya out some
I'd love a kernel based on the latest OTA, but with the ability to over and underclock, and with all the governors. I like the latest OTA kernel, but I miss the battery savings I can get with SetCpu.

Try the Freedom kernels. I'm using the agressive kernel and get about the same level of battery life I did when running SBC Savage Zen on AOSP and they are built off the stock HTC kernels.

I think destroyer is not updating anymore but GW is constantly updating is ROM working on putting leedroid tweaks on it. But if tethering is what you're looking for then there's an app for that. But shooter is the IMHO the best sense 3.0 there is.

SOS (swagged out stock) is nice it has tether built in I'm pretty sure. With an aggressive freedom kernel you get great battery life.
Well it depends really

Yeah yeah, some of us were reminded not to flame while the mods has time to move the post to correct section.
Since this hasn't been moved yet OP, wrong forum and use google. Download the code, build and compile. Not rocket surgery.
I don't think we will see a new kernel till the source code is released for the new ota kernel. Just my opinion. Would love to see one before that though.

Thank You! about reminding them not to complain! I had
asked them to move it as needed in which this is a Development
area of the phone.....
I am not very good at building and compiling unfortunately
so was why I was asking for a combined effort on building a new
kernel....Nobody was making anything new (FroYo had TONS
of kernels) I had PM'ed Lithid and I have gotten nothing back...
All I wanted from him was on how to add the governors...
I use nothing but his kernel and I get nothing in response..hmm
anyways I think I will be asking a different user/modder/complier
for help from now on... (and maybe switching kernels)
Oh well....it was a lost cause I guess :/
This post has gotten well over 1k views and a lot of buzz...

The very first thing you need to compile a kernel is setup a Linux box if you're unfamiliar with Linux you might as well try to learn to read hieroglyphs cuz that's what trying to compile a kernel in Linux with no knowledge of the OS is gonna seem like, coding is done in string from a konsole no GUI easy to make a typo and screw the whole.code up of suggest getting familiar with some basic source before diving into kernels maybe open up your favorite rom and manually input pvyparts battery bar code then go from there that's a simple few lines of code that need to.be decompiled edited and recompiled

I use full blown linux and I know how to use the command very well...Just need to know where
to get all the stuff at to where I CAN cook up a new kernel lol
Source code at htcdev, or use am existing kernel as base.
Check out existing github accounts and look under commits, sometimes individual modifications are on a single commit and you can see how they did it.
Follow lithid's walk through to get a sense on how to compile a kernel before you start tweaking it. This will also help you get the packages needed to do kernel work. Sorry I don't have the link on my phone.
You can also google how to compile sense kernels for more info..
Remember when you add everything into it, modules, governors, etc..it makes the kernel bulkier, and in some cases slower.
Good luck to you on your quest. Remember to that research is key

It's probably being looked into on the IRC but I have no idea.
It's also being worked on by Darch, over at the hero forum, and I would GUESS it's on Conap's to-do list as well (but do NOT quote me on that, as I don't know if he actually is or not).

I believe Conap said he's leaving it to the other dev's but I may have him confused with someone else. And the Hero has a ton of work on Kernels that will not apply to us, our kernels aren't compatible.

Sounds good to me, you can pop my info in there if ya want, but is there any pre-reqs? (like I am a kitchen user, and modder, not really a dev) but my rom does cater to 'special' needs I suppose, and anyone can use what I got.
SouthPaw!1.5-Final-(for Cellular South users): http://www.mediafire.com/?7ro6qczcoqcxtip
Also just fyi if it saves any time you can take a peek @ my thread in the 2nd post I have compiled a favorable amount of how-to's for my users since most on my carrier are just now getting into the root/rom scene: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731404 and I don't mind if you need to copy/paste anything.
Lovin' the fun stuff videos btw.
And another suggestion is if you would see if the modders/themers would let you grace your pages with their stuff as well.
Was just checking the site, pretty sweet man, very well organized. My two cents of what to add (and this is just anything I could think of):
1) Blue Echo & Red Dawn (by Papa Smurf)
2) cSrOm (by crunchybutternut)
3) Themes section for both 2.1 and 2.2 (in my experience, themes are the hardest to find)
4) Alternative bootscreens for both 2.1 and 2.2
5) Apps that aren't on the Market anymore (e.g., Fancy Widget, Skype Beta, etc.)
Not sure if all of those are even possible, but that's all I got right now. Keep up the great work man.

Ok, i added Blue Echo, Red Dawn, and cSrOm. Themes are started but are going to take some time and a lot of work before it is anything respectable. I am not enitirely sure how i feel about posting apps, don't want to have any sort of legel battles over it. I will look at boot screens once i get done with the themes section.
Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming guys.
I am toying with the idea of allowing devs to upload their roms to the site themselves, anybody have any thoughts on the subject?

Hey guys!
Overview
I'm going to go from kernel dev noob, to basic knowledge kernel crafting. Im making this thread for anyone who wants to help me (This isnt a help me thread, if you want to help then that would be GREAT but ill eventually learn the old fashioned way [Reading the internet ] anyways) or to anyone who is a noob and wants to learn along side me
Or you can just watch thats cool too.
Backdrop
Ive made a couple small mods here and there and a couple basic roms, but i have a lot of free time on my hands lately so I decided id learn how to make/compile a basic kernel. I have in mind the stock kernel (and stock CM kernel) with BLN, voodoo, and overclocking only. Mathkid95 pointed me towards forking off of voodoo and after setting up github... here we are.
Progress
4/8 - As of right now i just got my github set up, and im proud to say that im pretty noobish at using github right now, @enzofall is on board with me and this little project.
Trying to use fork queue is not working just sits there, Any thoughts?
4/8 - Made a cyanogenmod kernel fork, going to do that one first. Fork queue still isnt working for some reason ???
4/9 - Going to try compiling just to see if i can, for some reason compiling looks harder than it should be haha
4/10 - No go on compile.
4/13 - Me and fred have been digging around. Progress is in motion and knowledge is being made. Reached out to the dev community for some guidance But for now, i have freshly forked and cloned repo's of the CM crespo4G kernel and voodoo. Now if only i knew exactly what to do

If youd like to join in, then just say so and we can Gtalk/Huddle/call/send letters in the mail, whatever
That is all
Who knows why ill need this.
Might as well take another.

Is there a more straightforward guide to compiling? All i found is this http://forum.geeksphone.com/index.php?topic=2366.0 which im not sure if it would work even, i know id have to replace all the geeksphone garbage and replace it with whatever im compiling.
Right? Is there a better way? Im just trying to compile the stock cyanogen crespo4g kernel.
Edit: what about this? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Build_a_Kernel_Port is that a better one? I dont want to follow another bunk guide, as ive already been through enough trial and error. -.-
Edit v2:Or maybe this one? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Building_Kernel_from_source ??? So many options :/

Matr1x!
I used Air Kernel for a really long time in ICS, so that's what I voted for. I'm using matr1x 22.5 with JB right now and it's OK, stable. Everything else in in a testing phase so I can't really comment on them.
Closed, people get heated enough over kernels, without a focal point for direct comparison and seeming competition over whose favorite kernel developer is the "best".
Also "best" rom/kernel/w.e threads are strongly discouraged as they also have a tendency to turn into big flame wars.
So first of all please do not create these threads. They just create jealousy, fights, people leave, devs quit, and so on. Second, by papasmurf151's own words, you WILL get INFRACTED for even responding to the thread. The op may get banned. So (noobs especially) unless you want an infraction or want to lose your brand new account, don't make them please. It needs to stop. I've seen so many in the past month. Just flash all the roms, then choose which YOU like best. Everyone has their own personal preference

I think we should just sticky a list of roms and kernels with what's actively supported, what's not supported and which kernels work with which roms basically
Supported ICS ROMs:
Rom1
Rom2
Etc
Supported ICS kernels:
Kernel1
Kernel2
Etc
No longer supported ICS ROMs:
Rom1
Etc
And do that for each android version and tthe matching kernels so people can see whats supported what's not supported because its outdated(froyo) or the dev has moved on and then they have the list of kernels that work with what roms so they can try them out and stop asking
"What kernel works with romX?" "What's the best rom" then we can just point them to the list and say find out for yourself. And I'm not talking about linking the roms in the list just a basic list of the names for them to go and research but atleast they have an idea of what's old, what kernel works with what roms etc then I can stop :banghead: everytime I see a best rom thread pop up at least once a day makes me wanna smackanoob

I might be willing to sticky that evil. If someone wants to make ut. That doesn't mean make it abd post it. it means pm me and the first to pm me gets the prize.
Qualifications...
Must be able to maintain the op on regular basis.
Op contains jb roms/kernels, ics roms/kernels, gb roms/kernels, and sense roms/kernels with version of sense for each rom
Op must specify version number and active or abandoned
Must link each rom/kernel to specific thread of rom/kernel
Go through pages 1-10 in dev section
No personal opinion at all in op
Must be clean and easy to read. Perferably using bbcode that this site offers to embed links and bold, color, etc...
Hope thats not to much to ask lol

...not for nuttin' but how's about using the wiki that is already set up? It just needs updating and a few categories added, right?

I haven't even checked the wiki since not long after I started Modding my evo, mostly cuz even back then it was outdated and most of the links were broken. And my goal isn't to necessary to give people links but more of a list of what kernels work with which roms and the names for them to search for. Just to give them an idea of what they are looking for when searching, and to give them a push in the right direction for which kernel will work with the rom they want to try. That way they aren't posting things like "I flashed tiamat 3.3.7 on Tommytomatoes classic v0.1.0 and now xxx doesn't work anymore"

While I agree that it never gets updated I do like that it is clickable/sortable by different categories (ROM, OS, Version, Dev, Base, Release, Dev Status, Sense)
Good luck to whoever undertakes this, and kudos in advance! :fingers-crossed:

...I can see using that :good:
I would be willing to make a list, but I won't commit to.updating the wiki because I don't mod my evo that often any more and I'm not always checking the evo forums to keep up with everything. I think a simple list of roms and kernels set up in a format of type of rom gingersense, aosp GB etc and the kernels in the same format so you can see these are gingersense kernels and they go with these gingersense roms etc so when noobs go to search they have an idea of what they are searching for. I can almost guarantee 90% of them search for something as simple as "gingerbread kernel evo 4g" and don't understand that the kernels have to match sense or aosp as well as the android version and device type, so they end up flashing an aosp kernel on a sense rom and it breaks something and then they think either the rom or the kernel sucks and is broken when its actually just mismatched

Hello people.
I pm'd PapaSmurf about this and he gave the go ahead so if no one else has made a start or opposes it I will have a go at creating a thread containing Rom/kernel details and what not. I will follow along the lines of what evil konceptz proposed along with links where possible.
If anyone else has any suggestions for information let me know.

I created a website with all that for the Nook tablet, but there are so few roms it was useless. ill be willing to create one for the Evo, and I can set it up so multiple people can edit it and update it as need be. If i can get two or three people to help me, I can make it really useful. my nook tablet version can be found here
edit: Robobob1221 if you want to help me with this I can probably start working on the site tomorrow or monday.
also- im subscribed to the development thread, so I get daily emails whenever any thread is updated, or a new one is added, so I can at least get all the new ones and not be too much of a hassle to keep it updated, even on my own.
Easy answer
