EVo - EVO 4G General

What will the new evo 4g lte have spec wise? Also will 4g service be an extra charge? I just recently used a friends razor on verizon 4g network and its extremely fast, I was getting almost 2mb per second...I wonder how much coverage sprints 4glite will have and if it will be on par with verizon...since we really never had 4g on the first evo...

specs: http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=3742
4g: the 4g will be the same $10 charge we pay for the current wimax 4g
Speed: no one knows how good the lte will be yet but it will almost definitely be above 2mbps since you can get about 5mbps on the current 4g and lte is much better.
Coverage: they just started rolling out lte so it will be a while before it covers anything near what verizon has. but if the rumors are true then we should have lte just about anywhere we have 3g at some point in the future
hope this answers your questions

For specs http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_evo_4g_lte-4665.php visit here. In short, the screen on this phone has been voted by some, as the best on a smart phone yet; as well as the camera.
Id recommend on also do a comparison on 4g vs lte to see the true differences, but lte should bring a much faster network to us. In reality 2mb down is very slow for lte speeds, and in many areas it's common to get 15mb down or more.
Also, chances are that if you are not receiving 4g services currently, you will more than likely be one of the last ones to receive the lte service. LTE or not, this phone is definitely worth the upgrade on 3g alone.
Hope this helps you a bit.

Why is it def worth the upgrade for 3g alone? BTW I just started modding my evo 4g LoL maybe I should visit sprint & see how well the 4glite network is in my area...maybe wait til it goes full swing to 5mb like you said...also I just ordered exdended batteries 3 weeks ago!! lol

If you are still enjoying the EVO Og, and it is doing everything you need it to, there's nothing wrong with stick with it until more details emerge on the LTE network. For a lot of us, we've been flashing and modding since the phone first came out and it's time to move on.
A few big reasons to consider still switching over though are:
- Mod support - a large chunk of the top devs from OG Evo are making the switch, meaning, most of them will likely stop development on this phone.
- The battery life upgrade is going to make a huge difference, or at least we hope. Considering the fact that no one has one in hand yet, we don't have an accurate depiction of the actually battery life - but consider it safe to say that it will easily outlast the OG.
- Screen wise side-by-side it is night and day. Although OG screen isn't bad, a decent comparison is when you first made the switch from watching standard cable to hd (assuming you have).
- Processor is much, much, faster. This will allow for better game play, smooth transitions, and a better overall user experience.
I could literally write at least another 10 - 20 reasons on why to make the switch, but really no need. As I said, if you're still happy with the OG and don't feel the need to switch just yet, you likely will not miss out on much anyways.

Right I understand..Did they finally move the SD card location to the outside and not behind the damn battery...I hated that about the evo...When is the phone due to be out?

Wondering how long I can keep it going. If it could rum ics like sense 1.0 it would hold it own. The devs are working hard. Hats off for the efforts. So funny I will run a rom with broken features when it is perfectly capable but yet we press forward for something better. Nothing wrong with that.
Come on little evo...
Come on devs...
And thank you for your hard work.
Next flash? OK...

The speculation is that the phone will release on May 18th with pre-orders receiving them (possibly) early. And yes, the phone's micro-sd slot is no longer behind the battery, in fact, you will likely never see the battery ever unless you decide to take your's apart.

Yes. No need to worry. Get it. Now. It's in all our best interest. Do it.

So we will not be able to upgrade the battery!? That sounds like a ****ty iphoney move...THat is one reason I hated the iphone among many others...But Im a power user & I have 3 spare batteries...I work offshore & my phone can only pull 1X so its constantly drawing massive amounts of power...I usually go thru 1 sprint 2600mah battery & about 50% of an anker 1700mah battery...2000mah is not going to cut it....
Also, will sprints lte network actually work & be widespread...I have fears of the lte network never even being available somewhat like the evo 4g...I never once got to use 4g on it...BTW verizon 4g is amazingly fast & very widespread, tested it out on a friends razor max

With Sense 4.0 and ICS in general, battery life should be amazing compared to our OG Evo. If I were you, wait a couple of months to see results of how battery life is from real world experience. People with the One X with the Quad core are reporting great battery life and their phones have a smaller battery (1800 mAh). The new Evo has a SoC, 28nm chip which will help wasting precious battery life and generate less heat, as well as its larger battery. Overall it seems to be a great phone with enough new quirks to help many upgrade from the OG for a better experience.
One thing that no one talks about is that at some point were expected to be able to ROAM on someones LTE network. (Most likely Verizon) We don't have that now because nobody is running WiMAX except Sprint. Good article about it on goodandevo.net

Roam to verizons network?? How is that possible if EVO does not use SIM card...I thought to get on another carriers network you need their sim card...I almost jumped the gun due to the low price offered at wirefly..But after the promises of 4g on the first EVO never coming to light for me I Have decided to wait & see...My current evo does everything I need. Only gripe is the 4g that sprint promised which makes me think the same will happen with 4glite....Ive tried a razor max on verizons 4glte & it leaves sprint in the dust....Also, if the lte network is not up & working when the EVO lte is released & the evo lte has no working wimax then what network are you supposed to connect too? Sounds eerily similar to the EVO 4g launch

Verizon and Sprint phones, to the best of my knowledge stopped using SIM cards awhile ago. Sprint allows us to roam on Verizon when there's no Sprint coverage because Sprint signed a roaming agreement to use Verizon.
How were going to roam, I'm not 100% sure but I'm sure we will find out soon.
goodandevo.net/2012/03/here-is-sprints-future-lte-coverage-cap.html
Edit: this would be for the new EVO LTE, not the previous WiMAX versions. Just wanted to clarify.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA

You won't be able to roam as sprints lte is at 1900mhz and Verizon is something totally different.
Should be a beast of a phone though. Lte is already live in a few cities and the LG viper lte is already out along with a Samsung lte phone.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA

That's true but one can hope lol. But don't forget that Sprint is shutting down Nextels iDen network which will give us the 800 MHz frequency for better building penetration. At least we have that to look forward to in the future. I think Verizon is somewhere in the 700 MHz.
Maybe Sprint classifies some builder of LTE towers (sort of like ClearWire) are the future "roaming" areas that are the grey on the map from goodandevo.net?

Leaving my Nexus behind for VZW

I've been a T-Mobile customer for over 13 years and I've been loving my Nexus One since the day it was released (before the N1, I had been a G1 lover since the day it was released, too), but today I went to VZW and ordered myself the Incredible.
The only reason is because tmo's network in my area is crap. Zero 3G, rarely EDGE, mainly GPRS. And that's when I actually have service at all.
I feel like I am sacrificing as far as the device itself, but it's an overall win sure to actually being able to use the device the way it was intended.
I'd like to hear from people who have swapped from the N1 (any network) to the Incredible and get their thoughts. Am I going to miss my N1? Will I regret my decision?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App - Typos, thanks to Swype.
good for you, welcome to the incredible family
I love the Incredible I must say. My gripes would the battery life which is kind of expected on a device like this and root. I was spoiled when I first got the Nexus 1 because it was already rooted before it even came out thanks to Modaco. I tend to get all the latest devices when they come out and will continue. I plan to bet the Evo from Sprint and retire my Incredible only because I have become use to bigger screen. All in all the incredible is an excellent device a side from what u want to use it for i.e Rooting etc..
I do not think you are giving up anything at all for the switch. If your area gives you 3G, Good Reception and Good download speeds on the Verizon network then you have made more than a 400% gain over the N1 in terms of actual usability. You will miss some root features, some controls that you had but in a short time you will have those same features again once its rooted.
The optical track ball needs some tweaking for sure. The battery life I feel will come in a software update that hopefully will resolve the issue of incorrect full charge readings. In the mean time follow some of the little tips and tweaks people posted and purchase an inexpensive $14.99 ebay HTC Tilt2 1500mAH battery for a spare and you are set.
If Sprint has good coverage in your area then you might want to look at that as well. The EVO 4G is a very good option as well if you like a bigger phone. It's not for everyone due to the size but if you don't mind it ( go to Tmobile and hold the HD2 ) then it would be a very good alternative as well.
Good luck.
you're not alone. I made the switch to VZW too. I had average 3g with T-Mo everywhere in my city, except at my work where I had absolutely no signal at all, and having no signal at all 9 hours a day, 5 days a week, is just not gonna fly with me. Add to that the fact that we get 15% off service through my work with Verizon and switching was a no brainer. I couldn't be happier either. I've yet to drop out of 3g coverage, my signal strength is always in the -75 to -85 range, and I have a pretty constant speed of 1200-1500kbps which is better than I was getting with T-Mo around here. Of course I miss my N1, and it's gonna be rough when that 2.2 update comes out, but being able to use my Incredible the way it was intended is, well...incredible
I made the switch as well. We've been promised 3G out here for the past two years and still nothing. We even have a fairly large Tmobile Call Center and still nothing. Of course every other carrier has had 3G here for as long as I can remember. I got tired of Tmobile piddling around and I must say having 3G everywhere I got is amazing.
I left Tmo for the same reasons the 3G service sucked and they were working hard on increasing the 3G service to 4G, but not doing much of anything to increase the areas that were on Edge unless is was a large city.
Too bad, their prices were good, I don't think you will regret the change, I have a week verizon signal where I live compared to the Tmo signal I use to have, but I have 3G with Verizon and I did not with Tmo.
I was up in Manchester, Ca. KOA browsing the internet on my Incredible while no one else had cell service, Manchester in in the middle of nowhere, thats Verizon good service.
after being fed up with Tmobile's horrid coverage, I too switched. I was a G1 early adopter, and recently bought a Nexus. With the Nexus 3g issues coupled with the already crap coverage, and add to the mix that my employer is set up to get a 20% discount on monthly fee's and I am playing the same as I was with Tmo, it was a no-brainer!
Now if only Sense could be removed....CityID removed....and make the battery last I would be fully happy. LOL

you can kind of get rid of sense if you download another home app.
The N1 is using the G1's multitouch sensor. The incredible is using a far superior multitouch sensor. The buttons on the incredible are better too. You did the right thing. The only cool feature the N1 really had was the noise cancellation, but you can get that from a decent bluetooth headset.
Thanks for the info folks. I ordered my Incredible Friday (5/14) and with all the latest news about the back orders, it looks like I'll be waiting a while before I can make the switch...
My biggest concern is the SenseUI. I just haven't liked it in the past. It seems like functionality and flow both drop for me (having used plain vanilla Android since day 1 on the G1) when using Sense.
I'm hoping for root access on the Incredible so that I can, if nothing else, get rid of Sense... It's not horrible (or I wouldn't have gone with the Incredible), but I just prefer vanilla.
Anyway, thanks for your info on switching from the N1 to the Incredible. I'm looking forward to actually being able to use my glorious Android device the way it was intended, with the help of "the network".
You can always download a home replacement like zeam or helix and then use a task manager to shut off sense
hi, hope i not hijack the forum. lot of t-mob to vzw. any from att to vzw?
I was on Tmo for eight years and also used a G1 since it was released. Tmo coverage is weak in KY and 3G is only in part of main city near where I live. I like the Inc a lot, but still wish it had a physical KB for game emulators and Flash game content. Had a Droid, but the keyboard was weak and did not like the microsd behind the battery.
Anyways, I went from about 5% 3G, 80% 2g, 10% Edge and 5% no signal, to 95% 3G and 5% 1X. I have yet to find a place with no signal, which was not hard at all to find with Tmo.
BTW, Sprint coverage is not much better than Tmo, so if coverage is a factor, same boat. Sprint only uses Verizon towers for calls and 2G level data. No 1X or 3G for non-Verizon customer tower users.

Incred also has a few other advantages over the N1:
1. Microsd is hot swappable and not stuck behind the battery
2. Over three times the app storage space and no need to mess with apps2sd for a long time. Also, since the Inc uses the 512mb rom only for the OS and stock apps, no worries about losing app space due to rom upgrades.
3. 6.6gb free for media- not counting microsd space. The Inc would have had more built in storage space, but this is why there is 748mb free for third party apps- the Inc was allocated 748mb of flash for apps.
4. FM radio
I'm going from a first-day G1 adopter to Incredible. I've been a GSM user for 9 years (Voicestream to Cingular to T-Mobile), but T-Mobile has been kind of sucky. I live in the NY metro area and even here the 3G service is patchy, and even if I get 3G, it's quite slow. I'm not happy that I won't be able to use my phone internationally, but it's something that I realised was a smaller requirement as compared to the 95% of the time I spend in the US.
I held off on upgrading to the N1 mostly because I was bound by a two-year T-Mobile contract and the full price for N1 was too much to digest. I complained to T-Mobile about this, and they made me eligible for a fully subsidised price at their end, but Google refused to budge. Also, Verizon offers a 1 year contract which nobody else does, so that's a plus.
I still don't have the Incredible in my hands, so I don't know how I'll feel with Sense, but looking at the videos, I think the apps look pretty nice. It's only the home screen that I might need to replace. I really hope that Incredible gets rooted soon.

Evo vs My touch 3g slide

Gentlemen,
I have been testing the evo for 19 days now and it is the greatest device. My situation is when I do a speedtest I get uploads of 1.2M and downloads of 400kbs in Tampa, Fl. My friends Touch gets about 2M which is unacceptable compare to the evo. On top of this I have a great deal offer from Tmobile as a loyal customer for 1500 talk mins, unlimited data and unlimited text messaging on 2 lines for 119$ for 2 Slides. I am very temped.
What do you guys think?
Please help
BTW, The evo may become useless in about a year if the pressence of LTE takes over Wimax (My biggest concern) I can always sell my slides because they are GSM, but not the evo
if you are that concerned about the quality of your data service in your area you can always go to the development thread that explains how to use Verizon's network while still on sprint for better service in some troubled areas. This does not require rooting or violating your warranty in anyway and is returnable to default via merely updating your prl.

Does that REALLY work? I find it hard to believe that you can get on Verizon's 3G with a PRL hack...
It does actually work, i tested it, but i live in good sprint area. Honestly i had t-mobile, make sure you reading "even more plus" not "even more" pricing i got screwed like that. for my 2 lines with unlimited everything it costs about 180$, make sure you're looking at the contract service or the phone will cost 400$.
Also t-mobile is good in the city only. outside of that you have edge. The evo is also a much better device than the mytouch slide. Also don't worry about LTE, if push comes to shove in a year you can cancel for 100 - 115$ (depending on how many months you have on your contract). Also, i wouldn't even bother with Verizon, their Customer Service is fail and so is their software.
I live in a great Sprint area too but I'd be curious to see if the ****ty speeds I'm getting on my EVO are hardware related or something else... I get about HALF the data speed, sometimes a THIRD, of what I get on my Touch Pro 2...

Besides that, the Slide doesn't have a huge screen.. so you really should play with it to see if you like it.. I would take the Customer Retention offer honestly, it's a great deal per month (less than what Sprint costs) especially with HSPA+ being backwards compatible with all regular HSPA phones (like the Slide).
I'm not sure of what the PRL hack is doing, but if you're constantly roaming on Verizon and using more than 300MB for more than a few months Sprint will close your account out eventually.
I have been a tmobile customer for 8 years, and never had a problem and when I did. they were quickly responsible to the point were they will replace anything I needed at no cost to me with no questions ask. I don't know Sprint.
Also just about everything I have tried in the evo is literally available i the touch.

Vastly inferior hardware though.
Why, and when I root and Froyo comes along it should be no problem
600MHz OMAP processor versus 1GHz Snapdragon... 320x480 screen... and my buddy has one and it looks like a cheap toy.
Evo!
I just went through the decision between sprint and the evo and tmobile and the slide. I wad on the customer loyalty unlimited plan with 2 G1's, after hearing the specs on the my touch slide, I had to go with the evo. The slides 480x320 screen looks horrible compared to the 800x480 screen on the evo.add in the 1ghz procrssor on the evo vs the 600mhz on the slide and it's a no brainer. I have 4g, and it rocks (get 3000k dl and 100ms ping routinely in San Antonio). Also, you don't have to worry about wimax going away! It is an established service for local computer networking (home internet service). And they just keep adding towers. It's gonna be around way after your 2 year contact is up, guaranteed!

Because the Slide has a smaller screen, graphics render easily on it even with the slower processor. But, higher specs aren't the end all. The Slide has nearly no lag at all. It's more than adequate. The newer Evo's have a washed out screen too..
WiMAX coverage will always be spottier and smaller than HSPA+ coverage and T-Mobile is cheaper for you. If you want to upgrade to something better later this year you can sell your Slides to make up the difference of buying a new phone at MSRP.
Clear wire had stated they will continue wimax until 2012 or longer and wimax 2 is better than lte currently

That is exactly what I'm talking about, I can always sell the slide, but I can not sale the evo because is only available to sprint so I will be stock with a brick. There will always be better phones and I have nothing against the evo.
By the way can I tether with the slide after rooting the device?

I'm seriously thinking about returning this now

I just read that the LG Optimus 2x with dual core is coming out in March, and apparently for Tmobile. It will most likely be 4G also.
This makes my new Nexus S seem outdated already. Man I really like the phone but the fact that it doesnt support 4G was already a big hit for me, but I still got it. I didnt realize how much it really affected me until the other day I was talking with a friend who has an Evo and hes "let's see if this face time app works". I said sure, and connected to the my wifi signal, so we're trying to connect and he's like "man, connect to the 4g signal maybe its faster".
At that moment I couldn't open my mouth to say that my new phone which i dropped over $500 for, couldn't connect to 4g. I just played it off and changed topics.
Anyways that was my small rant, I'm sure others feel the same.
LG OPTIMUS currently has:
TEGRA 2
HDMI Mirroring
4 INCH WVGA Display
8gb Internal
MicroSD Slot
8MP camera
front facing camera
DLNA out of the box
With CES right around the corner, I'm glad I have 30 days to return the Nexus S.
.
I feel the same way as you. Im not going to say its a bad phone but we all had such high expectations. Who knows maybe LG might make the next NEXUS. I switched from my N1 because that was already starting go get me mad. I use to hate my brothers Vibrant because the screen was so amazing. So my Pros overpower the Cons so ill stick to it. Maybe when the new LG comes out ill jump on it, but i HATE branded phones. loaded with a bunch of crap i don't need.
Already threads open about this. Android is also not optimized yet for dual core, so have fun with utilizing only one core.

i agree with most but now the negatives.
- no community support " really, who buys an LG phone here? "
- its 2.2, they promised 2.3 which will probably be ****ty just like 2.2 on Galaxy S
- for sure no Android 3.0
- its an LG phone. how many times i have to say it ?
in paper, the Lg 2X is amazing. will i buy one ? probably i will. i think think the nexus S is a disspointment in terms of power
its not a bad phone. its just a galaxy S with better software " no rfs bull**** " and support by google. so android 3.0 is coming
plus. its a 3 months away. you could always buy the nexus S and sell it later if that phone is better. BUT if you already have nexus 1 or newer, then yeah dont spend money on nexus S

please dont post bull****. thank you and good bye
I suspect the shipped units will have kernels that're set up just fine.
Also just because LG doesn't have a big dev following yet, doesn't mean it wont when this comes out. This could be the thing that starts it off for them.
I seriously thought about waiting for the LG phone, primarily because of the Tegra2 and the 8MP camera. There was one major reason I didn't wait:
Straight Google Experience.
I am sick and tired of waiting for months on end for manufacturers and carriers to update the OS. And I'm tired of wondering if a manufacturer will update an OS for a phone at all.
Sure, the developers here on XDA are amazing, but they still need hardware drivers from the manufacturers to work their magic.
I just wanted to know that I was going to have a phone that Google supported.
Dudes-
It's not like you didn't know the specs before buying the thing. LOL.
Seriously, some of the design decisions on the phone are mind-boggling (no AT&T support like the Vibrant has, no "4G" support, no external sdcard, etc), but we knew these decisions before purchasing.
Personally, I love Galaxy S phones, and this is the best looking, best fitting in my hand of the lot, but I'd been using an i9000 on AT&T and in the areas of Los AngelesI frequent, the AT&T service is better overall than T-Mo. If the phone were 4G, I'd put up with the poorer coverage of T-Mo, but as is, the T-Mo service has me 50/50 on keeping the phone or not.
I have to disagree with the above comment that if you have a Nexus One this upgrade doesn't make sense. The much superior 4" SAMOLED vs. the 3.7" AMOLED screen is reason enough to dump the N1 for the NS, especially if you spend any time in the sunlight. The vastly superior multi-touch touch screen of the NS is also reason enough to switch, IMHO.
To each his own, though.
I wouldn't worry about it cause we all know that t-mobile doesn't have 4g, It's just hspa+. And even though the nexus s doesn't support it, you still can see slightly increased speeds simply because the network backhaul is increased so that the full 7.2Mbps is achieved on the nexus s. Nexus s owners are already reporting actual download speeds near 6Mbps. Don't you think that is fast enough for video calls fast enough to future proof this phone for at least the next year?
4G technology doesn't exist yet period. Not on T-mobile, not on Sprint, not on Verzion.
Is "4G" (HSPA+) even available in your area?
Better specs don't necessarily equate to a better phone, you might feel like it's outdated only a few months later. I say stick with your Nexus S for at least a year and see what's out then

HSPA+, 4G, whatever you want to call it...4G is just a marketing term and geeks can debate what it is and isn't, but that doesn't change the fact that there are two different networks in T-Mo's arsenal now (HSPA and HSPA+) and that one of them is capable of significantly higher speeds than the other. The 4G/not-4G talk is pointless.
I haven't done a lot of testing with the NS and data speeds yet; haven't had a chance with work so busy right now. I think I got around 3000Kb/s the other day, which is respectable.
I'm in Los Angeles, and we have the HSPA+ upgrade in my local area.
Near the Van Nuys airport, where I spend most of my away-from-wifi time, my Nexus One was getting a consistent 4000Kb/s, but I've never seen more than 4400 or so. Pretty impressive, but nowhere near the 6-7.2Mb/s. Also not nearly so impressive when I consider that my iPhone 4 and Galaxy S i9000 both get consistent 3000Kb/s speeds on AT&T.
3000-4000Kb/s really is fast enough for most uses, but when the network's newest phones are offering speeds 50-100% faster and then release a "flagship device" as people are calling the NS, it's a bit disappointing to not be part of the fastest crowd.
As I mentioned above, the lack of HSPA+ isn't a deal breaker for me, but the T-Mo service in general makes this a much less attractive phone for me as my primary device. My N1 had been relegated to wifi-hotspot/tethering-the-laptop duties since last July.

I second that. And pple keep talking about this tegra 2 crap what really are you gonna use dual core for? I mean lets be senseful here? With Gingerbread this phone is already fast and and pretty much polished. Tegra 2 is probably gonna be a battery hog. And this phone is gonna be full of LG/TMO bloatware, and no support at all its gonna be atuck at 2.3 for ever. That's 'IF' it even releases on 2.3. Anf Honestly who wants an LG phone c'mon now. Return your phone and you shall regret. Trust me the Nexus S is sold out pretty much everywhere when u return it and try to change ur mind to get it again its gonna be gone.. And I know thats gonna happen

I live 10 mins away from NYC so 4G is in my area. I understand completely what everyone else here is saying but I'm just thinking that with all these potential dual core devices coming out, that makes the Nexus S not future proof regardless of Google's support or not. This will also make the resale value drop gradually compared to the original Nexus which was a BEAST of a phone when it came out, and still hangs with the best now.

So let me ask you something. Are dual core phones gonna drop the iPhone 4 value as well? I mean its gonna be single core for a while chances are the next one will STILL be single core.

I didnt realize how much it really affected me until the other day I was talking with a friend who has an Evo and hes "let's see if this face time app works". I said sure, and connected to the my wifi signal, so we're trying to connect and he's like "man, connect to the 4g signal maybe its faster"...

Oooo the great "4G" lol
Haven't people watch the dogfight of Nexus S vs MyTouch 4G where they compare speed test side by side in a HSPA+ coverage area? And guess what, the greatest "4G" came slower than the out of date "slower" 3G, not only once but all three consecutive tests.
10:45 http://www.phonedog.com/videos/google-nexus-s-vs-mytouch-4g-dogfight-pt-2/
So whats the big deal everyone is dying for 4G? This reminds me of the Iphone4 vs HTC Evo video lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg
I hardly even get 2 megabits where I live.If you're area had HSPA+ its capped at what 6.5 isnt that enough for video chat? Also he had sprint maybe better coverage where you were and had nothing to do with 4g

One guy's results, in one location, really don't make the NS the clear winner. On top of that, they're hardly conclusive...less than 100Kb/s difference on 2/3, only 2Kb/s on one of them. LOL
All cellular/wireless experiences are just like real estate...location, location, location is all that matters. The guy even says he's not getting full HSPA+ service for some reason in his location for the last few days.
Take both phones to a confirmed working HSPA+ location and test again, multiple times at different times of the day and against different servers if you really want to prove/disprove the theory here.
The problem is this; there will be a newer and more powerful handset released every X number of months.
The Nexus S is a great phone that has pros and cons just like all the other leading Android phones.
If you fall into upgrading/swapping for every newer piece of hardware that drops you will be spending a great deal of cash and will never truly be content.
It's always give and take. I will give up "4G" and a dual core CPU for quicker updates and a pure Android experience. The hardware is still top notch.

EXACTLY.....& T-MOBILE 3G coverage is not even everywhere yet so what makes them think 4G will be everywhere in the next few months??
Might as well never get a phone then, since new phones come out every month or two, you'll end up waiting forever.

- I can tell you for sure 80% of cities with HSPA+ you will get the same speed on a non HSPA+ device. If the OP is not even getting a good 3G how can he get a good HSPA+.
- That will be 2 guys test. The second one is me. I had the G2 ("4G") and I tested its speed in Miami, FL (definitely HSPA+ area) and there was no difference at ALL, different times, different locations.
- I'm sure there are places where HSPA+ is a lot faster but thats the minority. If HSPA+ in my were was much faster, sure I will mind, but it is not.

We've been spanked by the thunderbolt

Have you seen lte's speeds? And the phone just is what ours should have been. Who's switching to verizon for this monster? Do you guys thing sprint will upgrade wimax's speeds or are they gona be crappy like their 3g?
Wimax maybe not as fast, but it's good enough really. Other than that, the Evo is a year older than the Thunderbolt, and in terms of speed and performance it's not too much better than our Evo. The issue with Wimax, is if your area has support. Toledo area here still does not.
Not me. I'm not going to that company and paying high prices for the thunderbolt. Sprint will come out with something comparable

Indeed. Just wait until next week to find out what Sprint will be unveiling. I'm certain it will be better than the Thunderbolt.
Love my evo, holding on to it until something truly amazing comes out. Maybe a dual core or lte sprint phone (since they're switching to lte anyway)

Sprint/Wimax has its issues, definitely. I can't even speak on wimax because it isn't in my area and may never be.
The Thunderbolt is a nice phone, no doubt. The fact that it's on Verizon and has horrible battery life make it a non-option for me. It will take a lot more than minimal upgrades to make me switch carriers and pay a higher phone bill.
Not bashing the phone tho, it's a nice option for people already on Verizon and ready for an upgrade.
Are you kidding? Verizon got shafted with the Thunderbolt. They pretty much got the G2 without the physical keyboard and with a bigger screen. HTC shoot (aka EVO 3D) is probably going to be Sprint's next big phone this summer, and that this is going to rape on everything (except for the iPhone 5 if Apple puts the A5 in it). HTC shooter has a 2nd generation dual-core Snapdargon SoC which uses an Adreno 220 GPU. The Thunderbolt is a single core scorpion CPU with an Adreno 205 GPU, so basically a G2.
NO THANKS!

This is it in a nutshell.
Sprint: Meager 3G speed, decent 4G-Wimax speed where available. Somewhat spotty coverage. Slow rollout of Wimax to unserved and underserved areas. Uncertainty of whether the 4G network will remain Wimax or transition to LTE. Excellent service pricing. Unlimited data that fits the definition of unlimited.
Verizon: Moderate 3G speed, pretty fast LTE speed. Coverage pretty much everywhere. Proven speedy rollout of next-gen tech (proven by EVDO Rev. 0 then Rev. A rollouts). Concrete certainty that LTE is the only 4G tech on tap. Pricing that leaves one butthurt every month. Data packages (except for iPhone and Thunderbolt-LTE) that are not unlimited.
at&t: Excellent 3G speed, where available, and where not clogged with hoards of iPhone users; decently fast "4G" speed. Proven to lag behind in rollout of next-gen tech (where's LTE, why upgrade to [email protected]#[email protected]#+ when LTE is out?!), proven to **** the bed completely in upgrading backhaul and adding capacity to their oversold network. LTE announced and planned, but no rollout yet. Pricing that is somewhat sensible, yet still designed to extract every last dollar from every customer. Data packages built for your grandmother.
T-Mobile: Reasonable 3G speed, where you can get it. Very good 4G speed, in the 2-square-block area you can receive it. Lags behind everyone and everything in rollout of new technology. LTE? What's that? Pricing that is generally excellent, with many options for handset ownership and subsidy. Data packages ok except for the 90% of places that you can't get more than EDGE speeds.
I wish there were a carrier that had it all. The 3G speed of at&t without the capacity issues. Verizon's 4G speed and rollout schedule. Sprint's all-you-can-eat pricing without nickel and diming customers to death. Seems like such a carrier would have 80% of the market overnight and enough income to build out the network of our dreams.

I meant as far as getting the Thunderbolt. Obviously Verizon has better phones than Sprint, but if you compare HTC devices then Verizon definitely gets the shaft. Let's be realistic, compared to what's out there, the Thunderbolt is a very lack-luster device. The only nice thing about it is the LTE support. In every other way it's practically an EVO/Incredible with a slightly better GPU (so a G2).
I'm just going off of the recently leaked benchmarks for the HTC Shooter. On paper, the Adreno 220 is supposed to be faster than Tegra 2 and anything forthcoming with the exception of the A5 Apple uses in the iPad 2 (and maybe the iPhone 5?). And according to the leaked benchmarks the HTC Shooter out-performs the Atrix 4G, which is a Tegra 2 device, in openGL performance. The Shooter will also probably ship with Gingerbread out of the box, and boasts a 960x540 resolution screen
I'm very excited about the HTC Shooter!

We'll see. Tegra 2 is right there (beating it in some GPU benchmarks) and Tegra 3D is right around the corner. The newer OMAPs have a monster GPU too.
To me it really doesn't matter if verizon gets a phone thats twice as fast as the EVO, without an uncapped data plan I will never be going to Verizon.

Love the explanation but i disagree on some points
Verizon: Known for their service but their 3g is starting to lag like at&ts does.
Sprint: Very spotty but if your in an area that has wimax its still the slowest 4g. You can always go the boost mobile root with [ILLEGAL] changing the esn and paying 50 a month for unlimited everything.
AT&T: ok 3g speeds. So many dropped calls on my old iphones i think my record was 27 in a row.
TMobile: Fast 3g and 4g! service in most places not spotty, In NYC i get around 8mb/s. I pay $60 a month for unlimited everything no contract (simple mobile)
the thunderbolt is much better than the evo. updated ram, cpu, lcd, better network too. sprint's 3g & 4g suck in comparison but their prices trump verizons two fold.

Which Should I Get? HTC EVO 4G or Inspire 4G?

hi, guys/.. i need to make a decision about which phone to get. i'm torn between the HTC EVO 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G. whats important for me is battery life and camcorder and camera quality. i got 3 questions:
1) if optimized with the best roms and kernels for each, which is the best one in terms of batt life?
2) again, if optimized with best roms and kernels, which is the best one in terms of smoothness of camcorder and camera quality?
3) can i use the front camera on the EVO 4G for video chat?
4) do you use video chat a lot?
.
Quite obviously, asking in an Evo 4G forum won't get you biased answers. Just saying.
Yeah, I'd hope you'd be asking the same question in the Inspire 4G forums as we, over here, can 'mostly' speak for what we know. The Evo has great dev support / following and I can't be bothered to look (not that it would even be representative of the Inspire support) if it's even similar.
I would first look at providers / carriers. AT&T kind of sucks ... then again, as some will tell you, Sprint doesn't have the greatest coverage in certain areas. I'd first look past the phone options, and on to coverage. I love Sprint, not only because I get good coverage here, but also due to the unlimited data. But that may not be the case for you. Overall, the Inspire may be a better device but I can't be bothered to look. If you are serious about joining Sprint, maybe you'd consider the EVO 3D? Entirely a better phone, yet still waiting on root. Chances are, unless you should get lucky, you'd end up with an un-rootable Evo. In time, though ....
I wouldn't necessarily look, first, to the phones. The Evo is a dated device, no denying that, but still solid. So before you lock yourself in anywhere ...
don't worry about the phones. focus on the service.
Sprint has unlimited 4g data ATT don't
ATT has faster 4g
Sprint is cheaper.
ATT may have better coverage in your area..... maybe it doesn't make a difference. I live i philly. I never have a problem with coverage, even 4g unless I'm undeground which noone has coverage.
I suggest you start with sprint and if you aren't happy with the service return your phone with in 30 days get your money back and go to ATT.
But signing a two year contract you really should get a phone that will be decent in two years. You ain't going to want a evo 4g in two years. Evo 3d on the other hand will blow any HTC on any carrier out of the water right now
Why are these your only two options?
Neither are great choices as of right now imo...

it all depends if you wanted to root right away.. The Evo 4g shipped from Sprint is now only shipped with the OTA 2.3.3 which is unrootable atm. Hopefully soon as there seems to be alot of progression going on.
The Inspire 4g I dont know much about because I've always wanted an Evo when I started with an Android Phone.. LG Optimus S was my 1st android and now the Evo which is making me mad because I cant root yet.. thanks to HTC locking the bootloader

I love my evo. There is a huge and great development community behind it. Which is a huge plus when your looking to root, there's also alot of accesories etc.
Sprint has true 4g that is very easy to turn on off.

1. inspire has a slightly better batt life but only by minutes.
2. camera is about the same
3. yes u can use the evo's ffc for video chat i have used skype, qik and gtalk
4. once or twice a week.
Also another thing to note is the inspire does have sense 2.1 stock and the evo does not. But with a custom rom u can get sense 2.1 or 3.0 on the evo.
ONE HUGE PROBLEM with the inspire is their is a bug where the newest firmware was supposed to unlock non market installs but on some phones the option is still locked. HTC and att do not have a date on when this will be fixed. So what this means is if u get a inspire with this bug u will not be able to install apps from the sd card or the amazon market, U will only be able to install apps thru the android market. This to me makes the choice pretty clear evo all the way
Just get the evo 3D
I would agree with the EVO 3d statement and the plan suggestions. Right now Sprint is the only carrier offering unlimited data plans. Which is pretty huge considering how many things are going cloud based now. Music Beta, Amazon, Spotify, Netflix, Google Movies, etc.. This is more important than ever now.
However, if you never see yourself using these services its really a moot point.
Of course, If you do go with sprint, I'd suggest getting the 3d over the evo if you can spare the extra hundo. Its a way more powerful phone.
To those comparing 4G of Sprint and AT&T...
Aren't they both NOT true 4G? The carriers are just marketing it as 4G because it's faster than 3G. If I remember correctly, 4G is supposed to be between 100mb/s and 1gb/s. The technologies we see right now are considered pre-4g, since they only get up to 144mb/s (144 for WiMAX, 100 for LTE) I'm taking this from the 4G wiki page: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
And yes I know AT&T isn't on either yet... they use HSPA+ which shouldn't even be considered 4G at all lol

people are trying to that the phones are similar enough where you should focus on the carriers.
yes the front camera can be used for video chat. I personally don't see the big deal behind it but if thats your cup of tea then ok. Judge camera quality for yourself by asking to see pictures taken from each phone.
But really all the differences are slight enough where service and price are the biggest noticable differences.

1. My evo got 26 hours of battery life today, before I finally charged it.
2. The sense 3.0 camera takes some absolutely beautiful pictures. I don't really have a good way to rate that, lol
3. Yes
4. Yes
I love my evo. There is a huge and great development community behind it. Which is a huge plus when your looking to root, there's also alot of accesories etc.
Sprint has true 4g that is very easy to turn on off.

i want to get the EVO 4G on Metro PCS. but i want to make sure that MMS and GPS work on Metro PCS. but importantly, i got to make sure that a custom ROM for it can enhance batt life. all this with sense 3.0.
