to flash any rom.. - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all,
I would like to know if is possibile, on my defy, to flash any rom simply putting rom file into SD memory and flash it with CWM...
I'm looking for a system to backup/restore my actual MIUI Rom.
Could you suggest me any stable, affordabile, daily rom?
Thanks

Hi, why is this in development thread??
Anyway yes you can install rom from sd card and you can backup and restore your miui rom with CWM.
I would suggest some cm7. 2 nightly, they are reliable for everyday use... or Ms2Ginger4 when it's out of beta :-D

flashing new ROM comes with a new kernel
if you want you can flash SDSL v2.0 it's much better then your current rom.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364416
Well i'm aware that by flashing a new rom a new kernel is installed. What i'm asking is if its possible to install a new kernel on my rom.
Thanks
Sent from my GT540 using Tapatalk 2
of course, you can install only the kernel from SDSL but you can run into many problems like non-working things (e.g camera, wi-fi etc). you must download the update.zip of SDSL and unpack it. within there you can find a boot.img.
flash it like this:
fastboot flash boot boot.img

but do a nandroid before !
but like the others recommended: Use the new version, or a different ROM (tejasdj12's builds, wingrime's Openswift ROM )
Hm ok thnks for the advice. Now i have to ask, what rom you think is best to me? I like roms 2.3.x... wich you think is best and more stable?
Thanks

[Q] Stay on Eclair or go to Froyo?

Hi! A friend left me his Defy so I could so I can put it on steroids as it's working really slow. It's still on Android 2.1 (Vodafone Spain) and never touched. I've read all the necessary stuff for beginners and understood everything (I'm not new to rooting and flashing, I've a fully hacked Desi), but I want to know a few things.
First of all, should I stay on 2.1 as base or is it better to upgrade to Froyo, in which case what is the preferred SBF?
As this is for a friend and I'm not gonna have access to his phone everyday I need a really stable rom. Are the latest CM roms stable enough?
And at last, I've read that some of this roms come with the kernel, what does that mean?
Thanks in advance for all the info.
1) You can upgrade to Froyo, or stay as it is(will not really affect performance) although people report Froyo to be a bit smoother
2)CM7 is very stable and fast( you may use maniacs or other builds)
3)I think you are referring to the 2ndboot ROMs which include a custom kernel. Though I personally use them, they may not be stable/fast enough for everyone
I would suggest trying cm7,9,10 and check how it works out for you

Yes, isn't that 2ndboot thing necessary to be able to boot any custom rom? So now if I would like to install a custom rom I should (update to Froyo,) root, install 2nd init and then flash the rom and recover the nandroid for that build?

Yes that's right, but what nandroid do you mean? Usually you don't have to recover nandroid. For CM7,9,10 you should just flash .zip from cwm. For ms2ginger you have to follow the instructions in op (there you have to use a nand backup)

No, there are ROMs without custom kernel as well. Cm7 and all miui builds are based on stock kernel ( all GB ROMs). JB is available in both, so is ICS, and only a couple of ROMs are nandroid backups, rest are zips. Remember to wipe data as well while flashing builds

If Froyo is officially deployed in your area and carrier go for it

Ok, so now I'm into work. I've already rooted and installed 2init. Nest step is to install a custom rom but I can't decide from this three: Epsylon3's CM9.1 Android 4.0.4, [email protected]'s CM10 Moto Ice Gun Edition or Quarx's CM10 Android 4.1.2. What would you recommend if looking for stability?

Sorry, as you see in the sticky in this very section, asking which is ROM is best in any category (stability, speed, whatever) is strictly against forum rules. Thanks for your cooperation.

If you want to install CM7 (.32) you need to downgrade to froyo but if you want (.35) you can install it over Aurora.
Sorry but can I ask why to revert back to froyo from Aurora?

That would not work.
Find official froyo
Unzip it and put into your sdcard like /dload/update.app
Close your phone.
Press vol+ vol- and power and keep until update screen.
After the successful froyo downgrade root it.
Copy cwm
Install cm7.
That simple.

I won't downgrade to Froyo, I just wan't to try CM7, and in CM7 install instructions downgrading to Froyo is mentioned, so I tought I will have to downgrade to Froyo and then install Cm7.
Thanks for all answers, will try installing CM7 35 right now.
EDIT:Can someone link me to CM7 .35 thread?

There are atleast three dev topics in the forum. One from genokolar and if i am not wrong there is a kernel dev for ezet's cm7.2 .32 by Paul*.
But... All of them are onhold or ended dev. And they all have bugs. So. What i am trying to say is if you want bug free cm7 then you should try ezet's .32

Sorry, for late answer...I didn't see any major differences...actualy I was more pleased with aurora, but I always got atleast 2 reboots a day on Aurora, so thah is the reason I tried CM7.
Now I have one more question...How do I get to stock GB now? I changed recovery.img when I was installing CM7, so do I need to change recovery.img to stock, and then "update" with official GB, or can I just directly "update" to official GB without changing recovery.img to stock before?
Thanks for your help

Searching for a GB stable rom

Hi. This is my first post on defy forum. I'm an old xperia x10 mini pro owner, so i know to flash roms and kernels.
Now I need to flash a Defy Plus rom. I'd like to know which one is stable. On my xperia, I'm using MiniCM7 2.2.1. It's an old rom, bur very stable. So guys, i don't care about bleeding edge versions. I prefer a Cyano Ginger fast and stable rom. Please, give me some opinions.
Many thanks

Thanks for your answer. Do they require custom kernel or unlocked bootloader? Or just stock kernel?
defy plus bootloader is unlockable..
so, root your defy, install 2init..install cmw through 2init and flash rom..no need custom kernel..

What is 2init? I've followed a guide to root the Defy+ and it installed a dual boot too (with blue characters), that boot if I press volume + or -. Is that the 2init?
I've read about quarx and fuzz. I seems that one of them is a nightly. I don't want a nighlty. Also, I did not find them in the development section. Can you provide me some links?
Thank you very much guys!!!
EDIT: Well, I don't remember if blue characters are from stock or new boot. I remember that it has and option "recovery > stock recovery" so I believe this boot has been installed, and it's not stock recovery.

Yes, it's a good build (but poor camera and high ram consumption), use greenify to better system performance.

WIUI!!
For me WIUI GB 3.1.27 Stable Version is the best, lots of options, fully customizable, really LONG battery life, EVERYTHING works and MULTILANG. I've tried all the roms for Defy and that's the only one I always return to cause JB is still a works in progress. Good Luck!
long story shorted, 2init will let you install custom recovery (cmw)..
if you want stable, you may try cm7 build from maniac..seem like he already post about his final build a few days ago..
