Searching for a GB stable rom - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. This is my first post on defy forum. I'm an old xperia x10 mini pro owner, so i know to flash roms and kernels.
Now I need to flash a Defy Plus rom. I'd like to know which one is stable. On my xperia, I'm using MiniCM7 2.2.1. It's an old rom, bur very stable. So guys, i don't care about bleeding edge versions. I prefer a Cyano Ginger fast and stable rom. Please, give me some opinions.
Many thanks

Thanks for your answer. Do they require custom kernel or unlocked bootloader? Or just stock kernel?

defy plus bootloader is unlockable..
so, root your defy, install 2init..install cmw through 2init and flash rom..no need custom kernel..

What is 2init? I've followed a guide to root the Defy+ and it installed a dual boot too (with blue characters), that boot if I press volume + or -. Is that the 2init?
I've read about quarx and fuzz. I seems that one of them is a nightly. I don't want a nighlty. Also, I did not find them in the development section. Can you provide me some links?
Thank you very much guys!!!
EDIT: Well, I don't remember if blue characters are from stock or new boot. I remember that it has and option "recovery > stock recovery" so I believe this boot has been installed, and it's not stock recovery.

Yes, it's a good build (but poor camera and high ram consumption), use greenify to better system performance.

WIUI!!
For me WIUI GB 3.1.27 Stable Version is the best, lots of options, fully customizable, really LONG battery life, EVERYTHING works and MULTILANG. I've tried all the roms for Defy and that's the only one I always return to cause JB is still a works in progress. Good Luck!

long story shorted, 2init will let you install custom recovery (cmw)..
if you want stable, you may try cm7 build from maniac..seem like he already post about his final build a few days ago..
*sorry dont have the link, you may search in general/android development section..
edit: here the thread link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458729

This ROM is very good too.
For me:

What's the best way to backup all my apps without using TB? Tried TB before and messed my phone up with conflicting device serial numbers or something weird. :-[

[Q]How to install CM7.2 on Defy

I'm currently on the latest CM7.1 nightly but when I tried to flash the cm7.2 nightlies which are for the defy+, I got stuck at the M logo. I then flashed my old 7.1 and now it's working again. Can someone tell me what I did wrong? Also, I didn't erase data, just cache.
I think that's because defy+ uses another kernel , so when you flash cm7.2 you still having froyo kernel , i think if you flash the cm9 kernel over cm7.2 it will work! But i 'm not sure

Just install cm7.2 for defy (not +). If you want to flash the defy+ version, you will have to install gb kernel and battery fix.

[Q] May I install a custom ROM over this firmware?

Hi folks
Yesterday I soft-bricked my Defy+
After a long and careful session of cursing every saint and patron I could think of, I managed to re-flash the whole thing ( mostly, thanks to this forum, so THANK YOU! )
Problem is, now I'm stuck with stock ROM, and from what I've heard since I cannot downgrade I can't install a custom ROM either
Before I proceed to try anyway and probably soft-brick again, can you tell me if there's anything I can do to remove my ****ty stock ROM?
I was using MIUI and it was totally awesome ( even if that's why I soft-bricked. ), so going back to MIUI would be perfect, trying CM would be pretty good as well ( but no CM9, I use my camera ), even MS2ginger which is basically semi stock would be fine, as long as I remove the stock.
My system version : 45.0.1320.MB526.O2.en.DE
Android Version : 2.3.6
Kernel version : 2.6.32.9-gbdd614e
Build number : 4.5.1-134_DFP-132
Thanks in advance!

Is this CM7, right? So Camera works, not like CM9.. If the battery not fully charging is the only problem I'm definitely going to install Cyan, Stock Rom just plainly sucks.
@Illumanati
uhm.. what do you mean? that's what I did to recover my soft bricked Defy, I already mount a Stock ROM, why should I wipe and re-install it?
Yes, i think the camera must work, in a red lense defy works replacing Camera.apk and overlay.omap.so, so i think in defy+ too!

looking at ms2ginger thread it seems pretty straight forward to install this rom.
just make sure you download the correct ms2ginger 2.1 file for defy+. wipe everything and then use nandroid restore method to restore system and data, and advanced restore to restore boot, devtree and recovery. reboot and you're done.
from what i've read, miui doesn't work with gb kernel. so unless some devs come up with new roms or nandroid backup that does, you might be out of luck for now.

I wish I knew .___. it sucks to be stuck with Moto stock ( whoa, it almost rhymes )
Maybe flashing 2.3.4 Kernel from CM9 via CWM MIUI works!
I'm going to try to flash MS2ginger 2.1 over 2.3.6, and if it goes I'll try the 3.0 as well
wish me luck! I'll post everything will happen, so other ppl in my situation can benefit
p.s. after a lot of searching on chinese MIUI forum and stuff, and after consequential blood tears over the poorly translated english of Google translator, I can officially say latest MIUI releases run on 2.3.4 Kernel
So Froyo is NOT required, and 2.3.6 is NOT supported as we speak

[Q] [q] cm9/ics/gapps - defy+ 2.3.6 kernal

[Q] hello sir,

waiting for ur humble replies ☻thanks in advance☻
God bless you All.
Why don't you want to use the Froyo kernel? I wouldn't use this nightly. You can't even phone with it! If you have BL6, flash the BL6-SBF with Froyo-kernel.
Don't use the flashlight until you flashed the CM7-kernel, you could burn it with the Chinese kernel of this SBF.
Then root the phone with the latest SuperOneClick and (after backup) follow my instructions here. Use the latest CM9-zip, ICS-Google-apps and the CM7-kernel(NOT the CM9-kernel) instead of the zips in that post. If you want to have the Motorola-Bootlogo back, also flash the attached Red_M_Logo.zip, or use my CM9-Bootlogo.zip. Flash the CM9-Music.zip if you want to use the new CM9 music app (it's very good, i can recommend it).
If you have BL7, i would wait until eppy makes a build for the Defy+ kernel.
thanks for your replies,
please let me know checking battery version ( bl5,bl6,bl7 ),my defy mfg. date is dec 2011 , details on battery HF5X, b052r984-1001, model L-L-L- DC111109.
and CM9 GB kernel is available so why not to use it, hope u clear my mind.

Did you try using basebandswitcher? Just to search for a frequency similar to your stock baseband? I think you did because default ms2ginger baseband definitely isn't what you seem to be running on stock 2.3.6...
Oh, and btdubs I think Mister Ypsilon is right about using froyo kernel builds for CM9. Your nightly doesn't seem to be too stable.
*EDIT
Oh and veeranna don't forget, BL version (BL5/6/7) is not your battery version. It's the version of the bootloader, and it is very important when it comes to downgradeability.
search it up, I don't do a very good job of explaining bootloader stuff.
Its awesome but lil buggy
I did it! Installed Froyo SBF, rooted, 2nd init, then CM9 for Defy, CM7 kernel, slept at 5A.M :O and bingo there was a pretty stable ICS but without camera! After playing around with it for few hours.. Tested NFS Shift, Angry Birds and everything was smooth as butter except that there was no Camera due to which I restored it back using a full SBF flash and my Nandroid backup
Can be used if you don't need a camera..!
I have a Defy+ flashed with stock 2.3.6 SBF en.asia
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20097916&postcount=3
Check this it is working fine. Tested on my moto after a full fresh Defy+ 2.3.6 SBF flash.
There are more stable roms built by quarx and epsylon3 in the defy development thread. Camera works and camcorder works for some users. These devs are geniuses.

You are using a 2.3.6 DEFY+ SBF? It's bl6 or bl7, either way you can not flash those kernel zips, they are meant for lower bl versions. Make sure you are flashing a Gingerbread (or jordanplus or DEFY+, it's named in many ways) ROM and skip the kernel flashing step.

What the hell? See this - link. Can you see 4.5.x in the middle of the name of every of those stock sbf files? Any ROM built for Gingerbread will work with any of those kernels.
Hi,
That partially answered my query. I would welcome if you could answer my query in some detail.
On my defy with green lens I first ported original stock Froyo then installed GGL ROM. After that I installed CM9-NIGHTLY-120617-Defy.zip but did not install any kernel.zip as suggested by other forums. And then installed gapps-ics-4.0.3-20111217 and most of the things including Opera Mobile, Camera except panorama/FC on stop thereof and GPS and few apps that I use. Opera Mini is not working where I live even via 3G.
Now my question was whether any GB kernel marked for Defy (or even Defy+) work for such CM9-ICS update.
My current kernel via GGL is [email protected] #1 Wed Apr 6 15:55:29 CST 2011.
Is there any other better kernel than the above that you my suggest?
Thanks.

If you flash a Gingerbread kernel (also named CM9 kernel) your camera won't work. Green lens doesn't have compatible drivers on Gingerbread.
Why would you want Opera Mini when you have Opera Mobile working?
If you want a fully functional ROM, I suggest you switch to some of the CM7.2 builds or MIUI Pikachu Edition or WIUI GB. These are all great, stable, fast and pretty much bug-free.
As for the kernels, changing them doesn't help much in my experience, but I do know that Epsylon somehow added some libraries (thought they are onlu meant to fix wifi tethering on CM9 as far as I know) in the Froyo kernel available on his site. You could try it - http://defy.wdscript.fr/kernel/ . (This one: kernel-froyo-222-179-4-signed.zip)
I see that you used the oldest gapps possible, I'm not sure why. Get the latest zip from here (ics version is for CM9, yes) - http://goo.im/gapps/
So, what I suggest to you if you want to stick with CM9:
1 - get the latest gapps, get that kernel and you already have the latest CM9
2 - full wipe (data/cache/dalvik)
3 - install zip - kernel
4 - install zip - ROM
5 - install zip - latest gapps
6 - wipe cache and dalvik (not necessary)
7 - reboot and see how it goes
Panorama still won't work after that, that's for sure, but I don't know what other problems you've experienced....
But why doesnt it work with 4.5.x kernels?

I found the old gapps smaller in size. However after your post I reinstalled a later one.
I prefer Opera mini as it has a smaller mem footprint. Since mini is not working here I use Boat browser mini which is quite comparable to Opera mini in speed,
However I have one issue on CM9 when I copied SIM contacts. My phone book got bloated to over 3 times the size with some of the entries duplicated from 2 to 5 times!
With MIUI/WIUI/WP7 I feel the originality of Android is lost with those boxed icons.
Besides I read in one of the posts in xda that WIUI ICS is based on CM9.

[Q] Defy Jellybean CM10 Help!

*Don't respond with comments saying read this or that...
I have read the guides for moto defy mb525 U.S. tmobile and yet i don't understand a thing. I have a bionic and have rooted/flashed/sbf'd before so I have experience but not with this device. I tried understanding from the wiki and beginners guide yet it didn't help me at all. (I'm dumb)
MY Goal: Jellybean CM10 on my Defy
I am currently on froyo 2.2 and I don't understand how to get CM10
I have an original tmobile u.s. defy (Im pretty sure its green lens)
If someone can provide links I can learn:
What should I SBF to?
What should I use to root?
How do I flash cm9 kernel (I heard its the only way to get the CM10 working on a tmobile mb525)
Once I get a recovery I know how to flash and stuff I just want to be guided until I get to clockwork recovery and have the cm9 kernel flashed.
Please help, don't flame....its what makes this community great
Root it with SuperOneClick 1.9 for Defy! it should be somewhere on xda I dont know where use the search function...
Install 2nd INIT it should add cwm

Sorry Sir but its useless to flash CM10(current version) on MB525 coz its being made for MB526(Defy+). Your efforts will be in vein. Why not go for 4.0.4 by Eppy? Latest build is stable as hell!
I read that you can flash CM10 by quark on your green lens defy but of course camera won't work
I got soft reboots. And the current version can't make calls/text.
Go for CM9 its really getting into its groove now

Since you sound new to flashing roms, you shouldn't start off with an alpha rom you have to port, instead, start with an Epsy CM9 or Maniac103 CM7 -- both are stable and a good place to start learning about rom flashing.
***Before you start flashing sbf's, you should read the sbf thread and find an sbf you like that's on the same BL version you're currently on, or if out of warranty, flash a bl6 sbf so you can switch between the GB and Froyo kernels. I'm not going to go into BL versions anymore, but that's one of the most important things you need to learn when flashing Defy roms and sbfs.***
For rooting, I use SuperOneClick 1.9.5. Then just enable non-market apps and install Defy 2nd-Init Recovery, reboot into it, select wipe data\factory reset, then flash cm7 or 9 followed by the appropriate version of gapps. Those steps will soon become second nature, to the point where you can root and flash a custom rom in your sleep.
All the tools and roms can be found by searching the forums. Good Luck and welcome to the wonderful world of custom roms.
