The latest Galaxy Note keyboard includes an extra row of numbers at the top which means you can type numbers without needing to change between alphabetic and numeric layouts. Has anyone got the Galaxy Note keyboard working on the 7.7 or know of a keyboard in Google Play which is similar? The ICS keyboard seems to not have the extra row of numbers which is a shame.
In the play store there is a free keyboard app called hacker's keyboard that have a number row that might fit your needs

Thanks for that information about the Hacker's keyboard which I have tried and it works fine on the 7.7. I have hit the thank you button to show my gratitude.
Thanks mate. The application eased up my effort to edit data on my documents and records.

This is a disclaimer you get when installing any 3rd party keyboard, you shouldn't be so worried about
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using Tapatalk 2
Really? I don't ever use aftermarket keyboards so I can't say that i've been bothered to read their disclaimers, but doesn't that make you worried? I mean, just because its a keyboard doesn't mean it needs to say it tracks your credit card, if its not recording/sending those keystrokes, right? Or even if it's not doing it now, don't you worry that the permission is there to in the future? If these are standard permissions that need to be set for any keyboard then Google needs (and devs and consumers need to be asking for more) to develop API's to separate all of this.
Well, you use any app on your own risk. I am more worried about the apps that don't say it but still collect various data, check out the latest scandals with apple and CIQ... Basically, any app you use on a smartphone or tablet could subject you to all kinds of data collecting, I don't think there is a way to escape this as long as your phone/tablet has any form of data connection.
Remember, all sorts of Big Brothers are watching you!

I use thumb keyboard for this, there's an option near the settings to hide/unhide an extra row at the top of the keyboard but they are customizable hotkeys, I just set them to be 0-9. Also there is the button for stored quicktexts which comes in very handy when filling forms or entering email addresses etc..

Plus, Hacker's Keyboard is an open source project, so it would be a bit difficult to inject code that would collect information without anybody knowing.
With that said, SwiftKey X is my preferred keyboard on all Android devices that I have, with Hacker's Keyboard right after it for command line stuff (I'm a geek and I love the command line )

It's kinda impossible to create a keyboard that has no potential of collecting your keystrokes - that's what a keyboard does.
You can check the app permissions to see if a permission, like internet access, makes you uncomfortable. Some keyboards are designed with internet access in mind, though (swiftkey).

Hello dear community!
Our CM7 stands in the wings and most of us are reporting bugs to CyanogenMod.
But apart from the bugs, there are other things that could be improved.
I noticed for example in the SMS app, that there is no way to force the line break through the return key has been replaced by the key for emoticons.
Okay, what's the problem, are now some thinking.
You can use a different keyboard or simply another SMS app such as handcent. Well, would not be a problem, but honestly - who would not like to have everything from one source?
I'm really pleased so far with CM7, the stock keyboard is better than Swiftkey or Smart Keyboard Pro and i like the stock SMS-App much more than other alternatives from the market.
Here my request to you:
Issue 2898 - CyanogenMod - Enhancement: Swap Smilie-/Returnkey in Stock Messaging App - Project Hosting on Google Code
Give the project a star, if you also like to have the line break back and if not, still give the star that does not hurt you and increases the chance that the project is implemented.
The whole was unfortunately already tried, but it has been there for more than 8 months and only 3 people starred this. I hope this time on more resonance, especially by the large community here. This is why i've opened this thread.
With best regards
Olli
Starred. I find this terribly annoying too as I never use the emoticon button but frequently want a line break.
Is there a way for toggle "android:inputType="textShortMessage"" ?
I've just decompiled mms.apk and deleted those lines from
..\res\layout\compose_message_activity_black and ..\res\layout\compose_message_activity
then compiled again and now i've got the returnkey back.
But that's only a workaround, can this be put into a option?

For those of you who are having issues with the stock keyboard and it's lag and lack of arrows, have I found a deal for you!
Head to the market and download "Hacker's Keyboard".
Its free and adds a much quicker experience, a dedicated number row, and arrow keys. It does have a bit of a smaller layout to fit all the new keys, but it is leaps and bounds above the stock.
If anyone else has any other alternatives too, i'd love to check them out, this is just what ive found.

giving it a shot now. Only drawback seen so far is lack of localization - EN-US only currently. Since that's what I use I'll gladly give up some key spacing for ARROW KEYS!!!

If you think about it, a keyboard program needs to watch which keys the user presses and needs to relay that to the operating system. So of course it can and has to read everything you type, including credit card numbers and passwords. You won't find any keyboard that doesn't come with this warning.

Well first, I think it has nothing to do with cosmetics at all. But, when you install it, did it ask for Internet permission? If not, then there's probably nothing to worry about. The only permissions it asks for is to read user defined dictionary (for autocomplete), read contact data (for autocomplete) and record audio (for voice input.) Nothing nefarious at all.
The password warning is a stock warning that Android puts on all keyboards.
I was impressed with the speed myself..that's why I decided to share it with the rest of the group
Going off on my second year at the University of Cincinnati. Wanted to see if there were any other Xoom'ers here going off to college and what exactly they planned to used their Xooms for. Also, FlexT9 (from Nuance, the makers of Dragon Naturally Speaking) is a great 4 in one keyboard (tap, swipe, speak and handwrite) you can add to its dictionary...overall great app.

I have been using mine at college since Feb. abd I love it. Last semester, I mainly just carried my laptop around to type all of my notes and used Evernote to sync them to my tab. I used thinking space for creating for brainstorming. I didn't want to hand write all of my notes because of how clunky it felt. Plus, there was no way I could keep up with my professors without typing my notes. I find that most of my classes that use websites for homework run well on my tab.
This semester I am going to try to leave my laptop in my dorm and just carry my tab around.

Still a ways to go for business users as well, unless you are using it for credit card swiping. It's good for transactions. Intuit has a pretty good little android app.
I do use my Zoom for work. I am using Quickoffice Pro with cloud computing to take notes at meetings. Sometimes I also use the bluetooth keyboard. This combination allows me to create, view, or edit any Word document. I also use it to check and answer all my google and exchange email. Through the VPN native app and a remote desktop app, I can connect to my office desktop to run work programs. It is a very functional business device.

I agree. If you learn what the Xoom and productivity apps are capable of, and realize what the Xoom is NOT capable of, it can be a very productive device.
The first thing you have to have is a computer (running XP is best) on the Internet 24/7. That doesn't appeal to some, but I've done it for years.
With a handful of select apps (or their equivelants), you can make your Xoom nearly (NEARLY) as productive as a laptop.
PhoneMyPC-
I view files and run programs on my desktop remotely using this. I even view a webcam with audio. It cannot download/upload.
DropBox-
Makes PhoneMyPC worth it. You can upload/download via DropBox, giving PhoneMyPC the one thing it lacks.
PrinterShare-
Prints anything at any time directly to my home or office printer, instantly. Will locate nearby wifi printers, too.
FTPCafe-
I have 4 websites and can manage them all from my Xoom now with this tool. Upload/download files, create folders, change permissions, etc. Great stuff. Increases my productivity 10 fold. Idownload html docs, make changes, and reupload them.
Documents to Go-
Microsoft editing suite emulator. Was really great, but since I bought it others have come out with better ones. A must have for pproductivity, however none of the apps seem to have the best of everything. You really need to research this one. Some won't replicate docs with the right margins, etc, while others (like mine) won't let Excel do equasions with sub-sheets. It can be frustrating, but there is a great thread around here on this topic pitting a few of the best against each other.
Then there are the usual smart phone Android apps, such as recorders, write pads, etc.
Prior to getting the Xoom, I used to lug around a bohemeth laptop. Now I have discovered the joy of lightwieght freedom by taking the fullest advantage of my home and office networks that Android apps have to offer. And they're always coming oput with better stuff!
Right now I'm typing on the Motorola BT keyboard and using a BT mini mouse with my Xoom in the dock, charging.
-My laptops are getting dusty. I've since yanked their hard drives and occassionally cable them to my tablet for anything I might need.
I will say this; there is definitely a learning curve associated with using the Xoom to try to replace your laptop. I've been learning how to do it since March, so if someone were to ask me, should I get Xoom or a laptop for school, I wouldn't tell them to get the tablet. But with practice, it CAN be done.
Android tablet apps are gearing towards productivity, though. I've already impressed my boss with AndCAD and some 3D model viewers, and using SolidWorks at work via my home network (Phone My PC) and then importing the files to my tablet (DropBox) and then loading them to a thumbdrive for him to give to the engineering dept.
But without having practiced that a lot, I could have looked like a bumbling fool in front of my boss.
-It's really like learning a whole new way to use a computer.
Note, all the apps I mentioned are pricey and you may want to do research before deciding on alternatives. Hope this helps.
They are pricey compared to many android apps (so many great free apps) but compared to PC software, they are super cheap. I just use my desktop and the Xoom. My life is so much easier now. I really wish I had something like this when I was in grad school.
Well, I wanted to share this for anyone that , like me, didn't think Samsung did that great a job with the keyboard on the GS3. I just downloaded the Swype Beta for our phone and played with it for a while..It's really NICE. Much better imho than that frustrating thing they used in our phones! I don't know what happened, but after using the Samsung KB for a while I started getting really frustrated. Not sure what the heck happened to my old Swype KB? Hell, that's one of the biggest reasons I was sold on my OG Epic4G! It was the closest thing to a perfect KB that I had ever found. Now I'm not saying this is perfect, but I think it's a LOT better and it's free!
Anyways, for those that may not know how, just go to the Swype site, log in or register, and they'll email you a link that you'll open with your phone. Then just follow the instructions from there. Not sure if you have to be rooted or not (I AM). It installed without even a question on my phone. Then go into you Settings>Language and Input, check the Swype keyboard if not already checked and (this is IMPORTANT) in the "Default " space make sure you select - Swype keyboard. :victory:

That's just it, swiftkey requires pecking keys the old way. Since I first realized that not lifting your finger during a word and not having to hit space after it, I can't use a regular keyboard in any fashion of the same speed times. I do realize that Swiftkey has a great lead on the next word, but I prefer not having to hope that it knows what I'm going to say and lift my finger up to select it's guessed word at top when it gets it right. It is just a distraction that adds to the time it takes to type out what I want to say.
Sticking with Swype myself for the foreseeable future.
-Xont!c
I still prefer swiftkey, the prediction feature make typing so fast and easy. I rarely have to type a whole word.

Samsung has done a good job of accepting/copying mods and features that we've been building into their devices these last couple of years. They've also knocked off some services. While Swype was pre-included, now Samsung has made their own 'swype' keyboard. But no, it's not as good, by far.
Although out of all of the upgrades, I'm confused how we went from Thinkfree Office, to Polaris Office, to Polaris Viewer. I don't know about you gents, but I've removed the viewer crap and ported my old Polaris 3 and its 2 libraries. Works fine for me. :good:

I used touchpal on my epic. Was far better than the swype that came with it. Very good for typing and swiping and has good predictions. Haven't installed a new keyboard on this yet. May try the new swype to see how it has improved since then.

I moved away from Swype some time ago, to Swiftkey, now the V3. It is excellent.
But, I decided to try the Swype beta, and I am definitely sold.
Even though Swiftkey is great at predicting, the fact is that you still have to take the fraction of a second to watch the predictions, and select it.
As an example with Swype 4 beta, I can swype over all the chars for my entire gmail name, which is my first [email protected] and Swype fills it in. Much better than in the past. Now, in that particular example, Swiftkey would likely be faster, because you learn that with poking the right first few keys, it will be in the prediciton, and you can click it.
Both are excellent, and maybe ultimately it is just personal preference. In my case, I have enough trouble hitting the right keys, and find Swype to be faster for me.
I actually kind of like the keyboard except one thing. The predictive text usually gets the right word I'm trying for but the only way it seems to enter it is if I tap on it when it's blue. If I tap the spacebar, it does not enter the correctly predictive word like other keyboards do.
Is there a setting I'm missing where the predicted word gets automatically inserted when pressing the space bar?
Thanks
Honestly, I have no idea...It worked for me before I changed over to Swype. That being said, the only word that will go automatically down to the typed area is the one in the center, the others are different predicted words that are 'less likely' to be correct, those do require you to press on them to use them. That's all I can think of.
