Replacement keyboard app found! - Acer Iconia A500

For those of you who are having issues with the stock keyboard and it's lag and lack of arrows, have I found a deal for you!
Head to the market and download "Hacker's Keyboard".
Its free and adds a much quicker experience, a dedicated number row, and arrow keys. It does have a bit of a smaller layout to fit all the new keys, but it is leaps and bounds above the stock.
If anyone else has any other alternatives too, i'd love to check them out, this is just what ive found.

giving it a shot now. Only drawback seen so far is lack of localization - EN-US only currently. Since that's what I use I'll gladly give up some key spacing for ARROW KEYS!!!

But, why does the system warn you that "Hacker's Keyboard" want access to everything including your 1st born.
Hmmm!
A little suspicious, or is this normal?

Permissions..?
Alot of apps seem to do that...I don't pretend to understand all the nuances of it all...but I can say that I have found zero issues with it as of yet.

If you think about it, a keyboard program needs to watch which keys the user presses and needs to relay that to the operating system. So of course it can and has to read everything you type, including credit card numbers and passwords. You won't find any keyboard that doesn't come with this warning.

Ah, thats much better..........ARROW KEYS.......wonderful

This keybaord (hacker keyboard) is the best...thing...ever!!!
A little scary when android warned me that this thing has acces to my passwords.
It is so damn fast!

Makes sense.
But, how can we be sure that this is not a rouge program that is 'calling home' with all your keystrokes?

Well first, I think it has nothing to do with cosmetics at all. But, when you install it, did it ask for Internet permission? If not, then there's probably nothing to worry about. The only permissions it asks for is to read user defined dictionary (for autocomplete), read contact data (for autocomplete) and record audio (for voice input.) Nothing nefarious at all.
The password warning is a stock warning that Android puts on all keyboards.

I was impressed with the speed myself..that's why I decided to share it with the rest of the group

Swype beta just expired.

This is getting very annoying, anyone have this problem just now??
Yeah, well they told us it would expire a couple weeks ago and made the latest beta available for download.

Yep it sucks. I had to buy Ultra-Keyboard as a replacement and while it has more options I just don't like it as much. Looking forward to when Swype is released.
agree, any idea when they are going to release it officially to the market???
i simply cannot function/sms effective using the stock keyboard.
Yes its very annoying, had a hacked version and worked fine. Did enroll in beta, and it stops working now and then. uninstall and down load again from swype installer
Same here with the on again off again swype ****. Got annoyed and bought the swiftkey kb when it was released from beta. I have to admit, being an avid swype user for a good 2 months, trying multi-touch kb's and such, I have to admit I personally like swiftkey a bit better. Seems to be better to predict words better when typing.
kpjimmy, how long did it take for you to get use to SwiftKey? I've tried it for a little bit like a text or two and found that I still prefer Swype. Then again I'm not a big fan of using the word predict. No idea why it should make my life more simple.
Good thing I signed up for the Swype Beta earlier so I keep getting up dates. I can't imagine not using it. I know some people using SlideIT and Shapewriter since they didn't get on the Swype Beta in time. They seem to like it.
I've gotten used to Ultra KB after swype. I'll wait for the official release until then.

Well personally, when I type, I mistype some of the times and when that happens, instead of erasing/correcting by backspacing my mistakes, the swiftkey app predicts the words I would most use in my sentence. I admit, I am not a frequent texter but I do use the kb to type in passwords (of course do not predict), but the userID's I use are remembered, which is a plus for me.
Really it is what you are used to and comfortable with. It took me only about 3 days to get used to it and for a buck I think it was well worth the money. Dont get me wrong, swype is cool, even my wife likes it and she's no teckkie. LOL. For me swype got old when I was using it lately and to me, loses the sense of touch-typing and at times, I forget what the heck I was intending to type/swype. Add that to the on again off again swype which bugged the **** out of me to go out and find a kb that actually worked. I even liked the multi type kb that eVil has in his roms lol.
I'm about over Swype. The new version's word guessing feature is so screwed up, I end up having to correctly probably 80% of the words I type on it. Swype has gone from a pleasurable experience to a frustrating experience. Boo.

You may want to edit your post and remove that link.
Warez, and the propagation of warez, is against the rules of XDA.
Just so you know, Swype Inc. has requested that their product not be distributed, making it warez in the eyes of XDA.
Thanks for heads up, removed.

Does the Swype Beta work on the Hero

Does anyone know if the new Swype Beta keyboard works on the Hero?
I loaded the old version, and it required a higher resolution at that time, but before I mess up my perfectly working daughter's phone (who is leary of my experimentation), I wanted to know.
Thanks.
yes it does I just recently did the December update and it's working fine. Just make sure you use the swype installer so you can sign in and use the keyboard fully.
i personally prefer Shapewriter...
Yes, it works great on my Hero. I've been using it for the past 6 or 7 months without any issues. Takes a little while to get used to, especially if you're moving over from a physical keyboard. The last update (December) made some nice changes. I would likely throw my phone in the trash if I had to use the stock keyboard! Go get it, its easy. Like the other poster said, be sure to get the legal copy. Good luck!
Be careful though, I just found out that heroes auto corrects to herpes...particularly important for us.

Yea the new swype works well but when you install make sure you have data on and let the user license agreement go through or else you will get an error saying this version was formatted for another device.
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
I upgraded recently from the previous version of Swype on my Hero, and it started giving me the features won't work error which caused it not to swype at all. But reading the Swype forums, they advised to uninstall both Swype and the Swype installer apps and then reboot and reload Swype installer and install Swype again. After I did that, Swype is now working properly.

That being said, requesting warez is against the rules. Check out This Thread on a similar topic, mainly the last post my the mod if you think otherwise.
So... if you want Swype you're going to need to sign up for the beta via their website beta.swype.com

I have tried all of them, and even purchased one. I got into the beta program a couple of weeks ago before it opened, and like it the best so far. Very good.
I'm not trying to dig this thread up, but I just signed up for beta and got it working on aosp 2.2. I couldn't be happier. Hopefully I'll be able to keep or buy it after the beta period is up.
When the beta first hit, it worked perfectly, now every single time I download it I get a blue box around the keyboard when I tap anything. It's useless now, which is a shame, because I loved it. Anybody know a fix that isn't part of the troubleshooting list on the actual site?

Have you tried reinstalling the swype installer? I had to download it again from them and do it all over. Also, try this: tap any text box to bring up your swype board, long press to change to android keyboard, let it pop up, then long press to change back to swype. 99% of the time that fixes the blue box for me.

[Cyanogenmod] Swap Smilie-/Returnkey in Stock-Messaging-App

Hello dear community!
Our CM7 stands in the wings and most of us are reporting bugs to CyanogenMod.
But apart from the bugs, there are other things that could be improved.
I noticed for example in the SMS app, that there is no way to force the line break through the return key has been replaced by the key for emoticons.
Okay, what's the problem, are now some thinking.
You can use a different keyboard or simply another SMS app such as handcent. Well, would not be a problem, but honestly - who would not like to have everything from one source?
I'm really pleased so far with CM7, the stock keyboard is better than Swiftkey or Smart Keyboard Pro and i like the stock SMS-App much more than other alternatives from the market.
Here my request to you:
Issue 2898 - CyanogenMod - Enhancement: Swap Smilie-/Returnkey in Stock Messaging App - Project Hosting on Google Code
Give the project a star, if you also like to have the line break back and if not, still give the star that does not hurt you and increases the chance that the project is implemented.
The whole was unfortunately already tried, but it has been there for more than 8 months and only 3 people starred this. I hope this time on more resonance, especially by the large community here. This is why i've opened this thread.
With best regards
Olli
Starred. I find this terribly annoying too as I never use the emoticon button but frequently want a line break.
Is there a way for toggle "android:inputType="textShortMessage"" ?
I've just decompiled mms.apk and deleted those lines from
..\res\layout\compose_message_activity_black and ..\res\layout\compose_message_activity
then compiled again and now i've got the returnkey back.
But that's only a workaround, can this be put into a option?

looking for Thumb Keyboard users to test a installation procedure

I'm looking for users of Thumb Keyboard who already bought the app for another device on the Android market. I want to create a automatic installation procedure for the keyboard on a rooted Kindle Fire. Because I don't have access to this device (Europe) I'm looking for testers to test it out.
Users who want to test it and don't own Thumb Keyboard are also welcome. I will refund the keyboard for serious testers.
I wouldnt mind giving it a test.
I was just thinking to myself if there was a keyboard out that was split because I have a pinched nerve issue on my left side so certain angles hurt.
Holding the kindle sideways and stretching my left thumb towards the middle is one of the triggers.
Same thing with the damn soft keys, home is nice and on the left, back, menu and search are in the middle...

Thanks, I will PM you this week.
No problem, I'll try to remember to look up in the corner.
Without messaging on here, not sure how in depth I'd really be using it, but I know the limited use of keyboard now is hurting my wrist.
I posted in the one thread about Swype my experiences with a plethora of keyboards taken from the settings.db from my HTC flyer. Thumb keyboard was one of those keyboards in the list I posted. Since I've already done the work of adding it to the database I doubt I'd be a successful test subject. Unless you have a no root required approach. If you do get something that works you might consider that list to allow your process to support more than just the thumb keyboard.
PS: it was an Amazon free app of the day so you should get a few folks with it already.

Getting the Latest Galaxy Note Keyboard on the 7.7

The latest Galaxy Note keyboard includes an extra row of numbers at the top which means you can type numbers without needing to change between alphabetic and numeric layouts. Has anyone got the Galaxy Note keyboard working on the 7.7 or know of a keyboard in Google Play which is similar? The ICS keyboard seems to not have the extra row of numbers which is a shame.
In the play store there is a free keyboard app called hacker's keyboard that have a number row that might fit your needs

This is a disclaimer you get when installing any 3rd party keyboard, you shouldn't be so worried about
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using Tapatalk 2
Really? I don't ever use aftermarket keyboards so I can't say that i've been bothered to read their disclaimers, but doesn't that make you worried? I mean, just because its a keyboard doesn't mean it needs to say it tracks your credit card, if its not recording/sending those keystrokes, right? Or even if it's not doing it now, don't you worry that the permission is there to in the future? If these are standard permissions that need to be set for any keyboard then Google needs (and devs and consumers need to be asking for more) to develop API's to separate all of this.
Well, you use any app on your own risk. I am more worried about the apps that don't say it but still collect various data, check out the latest scandals with apple and CIQ... Basically, any app you use on a smartphone or tablet could subject you to all kinds of data collecting, I don't think there is a way to escape this as long as your phone/tablet has any form of data connection.
Remember, all sorts of Big Brothers are watching you!

Plus, Hacker's Keyboard is an open source project, so it would be a bit difficult to inject code that would collect information without anybody knowing.
With that said, SwiftKey X is my preferred keyboard on all Android devices that I have, with Hacker's Keyboard right after it for command line stuff (I'm a geek and I love the command line )

It's kinda impossible to create a keyboard that has no potential of collecting your keystrokes - that's what a keyboard does.
You can check the app permissions to see if a permission, like internet access, makes you uncomfortable. Some keyboards are designed with internet access in mind, though (swiftkey).
