I'm using rooted official 2.3 rom. when I play mkv 720p movies , video plays at lower frame rate than usual and problem in audio video sync. I use mx player and hardware decoder is not available for mkv. can please anyone suggest me some tips to play 720p smoothly. and is there hardware decoding available in new adreno driver in dzo ics for mkv?
I m using bsplayer lite tha supports mkv.
720p on nearly 480p device?
Professionals can correct me, there are few reasons why it won't play in full speed:
1) .mkv files need usually the same space as .mp4, but it has better quality. BUT needs more power to play. That is the disadvantage of matroska. So if there is too high bitrate on the video, it lags/wents off sync. Overclocking might help.
2) 720p??! Really? This phone CAN record 720p video with good fps, but only in good light conditions. You can even watch them (because they are so low-bitrate), but if you have like 720p movie, it lags due to high bitrate it needs to look clear. BUT why would you want to play 1280x720 (16:9 ) resolution video in 800x480 (16:10) resolution screen? Shapes will look odd... I would prefer 480p (854x480).
3) I'm guessing that your movie is on your memorycard? If your memorycard is too slow, can that be the reason for lagging too. This can be fixed with faster memorycard.
4) Switch to Moboplayer. I don't have any experience of mxplayer, but Moboplayer can use hardware decoding for that.

on my touch pro ive had no need for watchin super high res videos but with the hd2's screen i figure why not.
do free players support mkv files and do they actually play without stuttering?
I dunno about 720p files without studder but it might do it, depends on how well it was encoded.
On my Fuze I have played some MkV files on Coreplayer as well as FLAC and OGG without issues.
Easy answer - no.
If you want best quality, recode them to 800x480 MP4.
But if you're into series, the standard xvid versions already play beautifully.
double post, sorry...
I used Handbrake for encoding files into MKV and MP4 to play them in TCPMP. The best results i had with MKV, more sharp, more brighness and they´re running without breaks.
so for 800x480 what other video settings did you pick for mkv to have it play perfect? i got a bit of stutttering on the file i tried today
Sounds Interesting.
just use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
Xvid is easier on the processor than H264 so you will get better results with it, just up the bitrate to 2Mbps+ and it'll look better than the the 750kbps H264, and it'll play faster as well.
CPU
did you know that even G4 Cpus cant handle 720p Perfectly!
also, there is absolutely no reason to watch a 1280×720 resolution file on a screen that is only 800x480.
it will give you no advantages visually.
no, but time advantages if it wasn't necessary to reencode the video ..
This phone should be able to handle 720P, I mean my old i8910 (600Mhz CPU, 256MB RAM, native DivX/Xvid support) could play most 720P I threw at it, so certainly the hardware isn't the main issue here...
m720p mkv's converted to mp4 using winmenc (and the audio sync fix to counteract the hd2's sync problem) and playing on windows media player looks great
hmm, do you have soo many 720p sources? i play normal tv shows and movies as divx or xvid DVD quality, and that plays perfectly....

No choice, some of us have moved to HD media for quite sometime already.

hehe...for sure you can't play 720p mkvs on the i8910.
Ok i have 1080 movie on my vibrant the default player does not support it so i downloaded the rock player. It works in there but it lags.....
Help.... How can i play 1080p on my vibrant
Doesn't 1080p video require more horsepower than is available from a mobile phone ?
Rock player is a software accelerated player vs. The stock hardware accelerated video player. It plays a broader range of codecs but relys on the cpu for video decode so can't do hd video or video with high bitrates.
Unfortunately, you wont be able to make 1080p content watchable on your phone without a reencode at 720p in one of the right formats or less with a non standard format.
Like previous post called into question, the hardware in fact, on current smartphones isn't capable of rendering 1080p content, unless the bitrate is cut down significantly enough as to make it almost unwatchable.

your wrong i just converted the same movie to avi and it works like a charm. VIBRANT DOES PLAY 1080P THE QUALITY IS AMAZING...
You are aware that your phone's resolution is 800x480
1080P resolution is 1920x1080
Therefore, all that extra resolution is for nothing. You're phone can't display more than it can. So 1080P is a waste, 720p is also a waste. EXCEPT for the fact that it is easy to find software to encode to 720p, OR if you are going to use video out.
Hi everybody. I am running Phiremod 6.2. What I really want is to be able to drop a standard definition video on the sd card, such as a divx or xvid file on the and have it play back smoothly on the nook. It seems that hardware video decryption doesn't work and that is the reason we are stuck using software decryption. What is the best video player? Even with the best video player, do you still need to re-encode the videos to lower resolution for proper playback? What format do you re-encode video to? Do we expect hardware video decryption to be accomplished by the amazing xda hackers?
Thanks!
I use Mobo player for playback. Have encoded several standard def videos from a TV series using Handbrake with the nookcolor preferences created by someone else on this forum, in H.264 format. They look and sound very good this way, except it does not fill the screen which is expected as it is standard def. Have not tried any HD content yet.

Isn't Phiremod just a modded CM7? CM7 suppports hardware decoding, for up to 480p files (max 854x480). Anything beyond that will be soft decoded. Anything that isn't expressly supported by Nook's "supported" video/audio formats are, afaik, also software decoded (the base player will not do this, need something like vitalplayer or rockplayer, etc.)
- If a video is just not a supported format but is 480p and under, it runs very smoothly for me in CM7 as software decoded -- you wouldn't be able to tell that it wasn't hardware accelerated.
- If a video is higher than 480p (720p, etc) or the bitrate is too high, even if it is the supported format, it will also attempt to be software decoded. My experience with this is that it's poor quality (stutters, audio desync a lot of times, etc.)
MP4 container, H.264 baseline codec for video conversion. Anamorphic loose, 854x480. AAC / MP3 (I forget what else is supported) codecs for audio, choose 44.1 khz sampling rate instead of 48khz to avoid problems. Bitrate for video and audio are up to you, but I wouldn't use the lossless setting for H.264 because you'll have issues with it playing (and will be an enormous file). You also really don't need to use it for a 7" screen. For me, video bitrate of 800 kbps (avg) is low but acceptable, 1100 for medium, 1500 is (non-HD) dvd quality. 128-160 kbps audio, your choice.
There's a lot of players out on the market, many free. I like Vital Player Neon a lot but the paid app version failed on me because of their self-copy protection. I use Moboplayer and also installed the Neon codec from the dev's website, it improved my performance noticeably on some more system-intensive videos.
As always, YMMV.

Is the <-> (vs >-<, etc options) not working for you to expand it to full screen? I have not had any issues getting 480p content to edge-to-edge (provided it's 16:9 aspect ratio, which many shows and movies are. While Nook's resolution isn't true 16:9 it's close enough that you won't notice any real edge). The only videos that display with bars for me are the wider aspect ratio ones.
(On stock rooted firmware, with 1.1Ghz OC)
I also use handbrake... encoding to 1024x576 xvid seems to do the trick with mobo player. (Altough so far I tried only one video file.)
edit: tried an other one, plays almost perfectly in sync. It is about 1 frame out-of-sync that can only be noticed with hard, fast sounds like slapping.
Encoding to h264 with the said resolution results in video being played back slower and of course audio being out of sync.
480p h264 baseline / aac mp4 files can be hardware decoded and play nice, but I'm all for the bigger resolution.

The ones I did were not in 16:9 aspect ratio, they were 4:3 which is why I believe I could not expand them to full screen. I haven't yet tried a 16:9 video like a movie but will soon.
in addition to the formats/resoluton mentioned try using Vital Player Neon - works with a lot of formats - plays really smooth on my NC (CM7 7.02+1.3GHzOC)
Thanks a bunch!
Hi guys im on ismobile rom everything great but hd vid playback sucks. Im using dice for playback but still its not like it should be. Anyone any thoughts?
Thank you!
Sent from my GT-P7500 using XDA App
Rockplayer maybe....
I use it for my movies
Send from my rooted 10.1v
MX Video-Player works as well.
Just give it a try
This tablet sucks hard on .mkv high quality videos . If you want to play them smoothly , you can convert to WMV using MSMPEG4V2 codec .
MX Player is a very good player.
Subject's been beaten to death in other threads. Basically boils down to specific supported codec settings when you encode your rips.
If you're trying to watch 1080p or 720p BD rips that you're pulling off of random torrents you'll undoubtedly have issues. If you're encoding yourself though you should be able to adjust your encoding settings to get smooth 720p playback.
My rips are done in Handbrake to MP4 format, I start with the Regular-High Profile and then turn off B-Frames, CABAC, 8x8 Transform and Weighted P-Frames. I then set my audio to a single AAC track at 160 bitrate and turn off all video filters. My video quality I set to ABR with a target average of about 3000 to 3500. My picture setting I set to 1280 width. Do this once and save it as a preset . . done . . Resulting rips play flawlessly in Dice and look STUNNING on the GT 10.1's screen.
I've even combined my MP4's into MKV files to add subtitles without issues.
You can thank nVidia for not including NEON in the Tegra 2's Cortex A9 to save money.

Does anyone know if the 7.7" version plays back 720p MKV without any problems?
I have the original 7.0", and it plays 720p MKV perfect!
I also have a 10.1", but that one is struggling with 720p MKV in stock and other players. (on both HC3.1 and 3.2). Apparently the Tetra2 is not ideal for this...
This is my only deal-breaker for the 7.7.
Would really appreciate your feedback!

Because they forgot to implement the NEON chipset!
1080p/720p mkv's shouldn't be a problem on the 7.7 with MX Player or DICE.

Nope, no problem at all.
It can play 1080p, 8 bit , high bitrate movie with hardware decoding just fine( use mxvideoplayer with arm7 neon codec)
No problems playing 720p mkvs. Heck I can even play 10-bit 720p anime files using MX Player in SW mode. You'll notice a very slight fps drop during panning scenes and such but audio, video, and subs still stay in sync so it's quite watchable. Heard once you get ICS you will be able to take advantage of HW mode on all videos, even 10-bit.
