Does anyone know if the 7.7" version plays back 720p MKV without any problems?
I have the original 7.0", and it plays 720p MKV perfect!
I also have a 10.1", but that one is struggling with 720p MKV in stock and other players. (on both HC3.1 and 3.2). Apparently the Tetra2 is not ideal for this...
This is my only deal-breaker for the 7.7.
Would really appreciate your feedback!

Because they forgot to implement the NEON chipset!
1080p/720p mkv's shouldn't be a problem on the 7.7 with MX Player or DICE.

Nope, no problem at all.
It can play 1080p, 8 bit , high bitrate movie with hardware decoding just fine( use mxvideoplayer with arm7 neon codec)
No problems playing 720p mkvs. Heck I can even play 10-bit 720p anime files using MX Player in SW mode. You'll notice a very slight fps drop during panning scenes and such but audio, video, and subs still stay in sync so it's quite watchable. Heard once you get ICS you will be able to take advantage of HW mode on all videos, even 10-bit.

on my touch pro ive had no need for watchin super high res videos but with the hd2's screen i figure why not.
do free players support mkv files and do they actually play without stuttering?
I dunno about 720p files without studder but it might do it, depends on how well it was encoded.
On my Fuze I have played some MkV files on Coreplayer as well as FLAC and OGG without issues.
Easy answer - no.
If you want best quality, recode them to 800x480 MP4.
But if you're into series, the standard xvid versions already play beautifully.
double post, sorry...
I used Handbrake for encoding files into MKV and MP4 to play them in TCPMP. The best results i had with MKV, more sharp, more brighness and they´re running without breaks.
so for 800x480 what other video settings did you pick for mkv to have it play perfect? i got a bit of stutttering on the file i tried today
Sounds Interesting.
just use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
Xvid is easier on the processor than H264 so you will get better results with it, just up the bitrate to 2Mbps+ and it'll look better than the the 750kbps H264, and it'll play faster as well.
CPU
did you know that even G4 Cpus cant handle 720p Perfectly!
also, there is absolutely no reason to watch a 1280×720 resolution file on a screen that is only 800x480.
it will give you no advantages visually.
no, but time advantages if it wasn't necessary to reencode the video ..
This phone should be able to handle 720P, I mean my old i8910 (600Mhz CPU, 256MB RAM, native DivX/Xvid support) could play most 720P I threw at it, so certainly the hardware isn't the main issue here...
m720p mkv's converted to mp4 using winmenc (and the audio sync fix to counteract the hd2's sync problem) and playing on windows media player looks great
hmm, do you have soo many 720p sources? i play normal tv shows and movies as divx or xvid DVD quality, and that plays perfectly....

No choice, some of us have moved to HD media for quite sometime already.

hehe...for sure you can't play 720p mkvs on the i8910.
Hello !
Yesterday I was very much surprised when I downloaded all mp4 HD video from my SGS2 to the TAb and neither file couldn't be played on stock player. After hours of rush in the Internet I tryied almost all other known players but the bext I achieved was slow motion video in dice player. What is your expereience? Did anybody run smoothly HD videos on his device?
720p is fine. 1080p is not. You can grab bsplayer free from the market, very nice player.
I believe the only hardware accelerated codec is H264 so any video not in that format would have issues with 1080p. I personally played a 720p Xvid, over the network, using MX Player last night. DICE had speed problems with it.
In my experience DICE is better for MKV and MX is better for AVI etc.
there's discussions and recommendations about this in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306457
If there is any app that would do it if the hardware was up to spec it would be Dice Player. It eats all my 720p MKV's for breakfast but still can't do 1080p.
The Official ICS has got awesome Codecs that allows 720p hd video playback on the Nexus S on the stock player itself without lag.
But Video files with .mov extensions are not supported yet, ONLY .mp4
Try yourself

Gingerbread supported h264 codec
Still missing important video like avi and ac3 dts audio codecs dice player still needed but atm not compatible with 4.0.3

Funny thing is (on GB with MX Player), that 720p mp4 video @ ~30fps plays with no lag at all. Simply beautifull. But video with same params but avi format lags like hell, or plays like slow slideshow...

That's probably because it doesn't support hardware acceleration with other codecs than H.264.

Which codec is the AVI using? There are h264 codecs that you can use in AVI files, but as stated, the usual h263 ones (divx, xvid, etc.) probably aren't hardware accelerated.
The new Vplayer offers 1080p video playback on the nexus s and galaxy nexus running ics

Try BSPlayer
720p video on a ~480p display?
I tried vplayer last night video playback with hardware acceleration were distorted but playback seemed smooth. Tested despicable me 720 MKV with DTS and RIO 720 AVI (old movies but great for showing off the SAMOLED)
but then again im using on icecream so maybe not supported and hardware acceleration is in experimental atm.
diceplayer has matured overtime also supports DTS a common audio format for MKV videos- offers everything you need for 5 buck. $5 is chump change considering the caliber of the app also the dev is great, really quick to fix problems and response quick to emails
also from what i hear BS player is also hardware but ATM don't work correctly on IC
also 1080 cool if can be played with hardware acceleration and playback is smooth. but not practical with only 16gb memory ..you might e ables to fit one movie with quality reduced since a decent quality MKV is like 9-12GB plus the SD is used for more than just media...its not worth it

believe it or not it looks better than a 480x720 even if not running at 720P
also most HD movies online are at 1280x720 so it save the hassle of resizing and also reducing the quality of the video
I'm using rooted official 2.3 rom. when I play mkv 720p movies , video plays at lower frame rate than usual and problem in audio video sync. I use mx player and hardware decoder is not available for mkv. can please anyone suggest me some tips to play 720p smoothly. and is there hardware decoding available in new adreno driver in dzo ics for mkv?
I m using bsplayer lite tha supports mkv.
720p on nearly 480p device?
Professionals can correct me, there are few reasons why it won't play in full speed:
1) .mkv files need usually the same space as .mp4, but it has better quality. BUT needs more power to play. That is the disadvantage of matroska. So if there is too high bitrate on the video, it lags/wents off sync. Overclocking might help.
2) 720p??! Really? This phone CAN record 720p video with good fps, but only in good light conditions. You can even watch them (because they are so low-bitrate), but if you have like 720p movie, it lags due to high bitrate it needs to look clear. BUT why would you want to play 1280x720 (16:9 ) resolution video in 800x480 (16:10) resolution screen? Shapes will look odd... I would prefer 480p (854x480).
3) I'm guessing that your movie is on your memorycard? If your memorycard is too slow, can that be the reason for lagging too. This can be fixed with faster memorycard.
4) Switch to Moboplayer. I don't have any experience of mxplayer, but Moboplayer can use hardware decoding for that.
I bought me a Lenovo Tablet yesterday and wanted to try out to play HD Videos on it.
Sadly my videos are lagging and the audio is async... I tried it with MX Player and Mobo Player, both installed the ARMv7 Codec. What i'm curious about is, that the Tegra v2 Chip should to decoding of 1080p h.264 Material in Hardware (my video was h.264 720p in a MKV Container) and both players showed me that they decode the video in software...
Is there any player that can play my mkv videos without lagging around? Or do i just need to adjust something?

Try different players but it's def not capable of 1080 and even has issues with 720p main and high profile
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
mhh but the nvidia site says something different...
so the chip itself should take care of that... maybe its just a firmware issue?
The screen is 1200x800 so there's really no way to play 1080p on it. Even 720p is going to be cropped. The only way to do 1080p is over HDMI without mirroring but apparently that isn't very smooth so 720p seems like a much better option.
Tried a reboot and/or turning Wifi off/on again? It's worked for me.
Basically the chip can do it. The Tegra 2 has some special HW IP inside that will do the decoding. Most of the Tegra 2 tables are unable to use it because the vendors are not supplying the codecs and filters that make use of the HW block. So you are somehow limited to the codecs and resolutions that are choosen by the manufacturer/Nvidia. You can't change anything and as far as I know Nvidia also isn't distributing this part open.
I'm also quiet disappointed seeing that chinese pads with Telechips MCU (ARM11 single-core) can playback almost everything up to full-HD and the Thinkpad Tablet can't.
Dice Player.
It is the ONLY working HW accelerated player in my experience....
mkv files, everything plays well on it....
