Strange sms splitting on CM 7.1 stable - G2 and Desire Z General

Hello, i hope this is the right section for this post.
The CM 7.1 stable is the first and only rom that i flashed on my DZ after i rooted it from some months.
Since i have it i notice a strange problem writing sms, it doesn't happens every time, just randomly sometimes.
I write an sms and automatically it splits in 2 or also 3 messages after sending it, even if the messages are less 160 chars!
This didn't happened when i had the stock HTC GB rom.
This could be a bug?
This is enough a problem cause i send one sms but i pay for 2-3

Are you using special characters?
160chars is for 7bit text, if you use some special chars (and use 8bit text, ie. using some national characters) then you have only 140 chars...
If you use UTF-8 characters, then your message can be only 70 chars. long...

uhm i use characters like ò à è ù as i write in Italian language

And you used them before? Maybe CM uses other encoding for them...
If you can, try with 71-140characters SMS/TEXT, if it still split, then 0-70...
Or just stop using then if you can (I don't know Italian, so hard to say)
Or try other rom (non-cm7 based)...
I don't have CM atm and I don't remember any setting that could match and fix this problem...

Its your cell phone company. Try hancent
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium

my carrier is Vodafone Italy. Now im trying with GO SMS Pro, let see...
or if will have same problem i could do the suggestion of louloudi trying another rom.
thanks

It seems to me that SMS encoding, and so SMS splitting, depends on your service provider so changing ROM won't change anything about this.
Maybe with CM7 SMS app you can now see that your messages are split beside you couldn't with the stock one.
But as i may be wrong and as it's not a known CM bug, you can try flashing it again.

Same problem now

SMS only 70 Letters?!

As a few of you know i have only just got my Magician, and i have been using it for the last few days and i have to say that i love it i really do, but i do have one problem, when replying to an sms message the counter starts at 160 but then after writing a line or so it drops to 70! So for a 160 letter sms it sends it in two messages of 70!
Anyone got any ideas on what that might be?
i had the same problem too.. except after 3 messages it split to 3 messages for 112 charachters... was confused too....

Please check to see if you use any dobule byte character in your SMS. This might be the cause.
Michael
Hey guys this is due to the fact that when you write the SMSs you are including UNICODE characters such as ' " etc....
Due to the fact that these characters are encoded differently to standard characters, the SMS application has to reduce the number of characters in the sms and hence only allows 70 characters per sms.......which could mean that you send a short sms or send the sms split up! This can cost you a lot!!!
You have two options........
1/ Turn off Unicode characters
- this is done by; from you SMS inbox -> Tools -> Options -> Accounts Tab -> Click on * Text Messages -> un-tick the 'Use Unicode when necessary' -> then OK.
2/ Make sure that you don’t use Unicode characters
hope this helps!!
you can also turn unicode and double-byte characters off as well.
in messaging app, tap accounts, and then accounts
tap text messages, and then untick use unicode when necessary.
This still allows you to type in the extra characters, but wether it sends them or not, I dont know (being an uneducated englishman, i only speak english so never use those characters!)
this place just never seases to amaze me! Thanks very much guys you all deserve a star!

No, because greek characters are in the extended unicode set, not the default characters.
but how come we can send 160char greek sms with other phones ?
perhaps there is a keyboard mapping that doesn't use unicode...
woh guys!! I wondered why my qtek S110 did wierd stuff.. it's all ok now thanks to you!! CHEEERS!! ;o)

In the default 7-bit SMS alphabet, the greek letters that do not have a latin equivalent (say beta -> B) or omomorph (say rho -> P) letter, that is delta, phi, gamma, lambda, omega, pi, psi, sigma theta and xi are available, but you can't chose between upper and lower case. The official character set only supports UPPER case...
There are a few semistandard for dealing with upper and lower cases, but it's quite likely that the sms application on windows mobile can't deal with either.
but with the greek keyboard it works!!!!!
only with the phone pad not......
How about Chinese characters?

This used to happen to me before upgrading to the AUK2 firmware, I think its to do with the phone losing the UTMS signel before comfermation that the message is sent and falling back to using the 2/2.5G network.
I could be wrong but thats what I seemed to notice when it was happening to me.
shift
Yeah I used to only see one sms go but mates told me they were getting 2.
The latest rom updates (xdx exec one in my case) solved the isuse for me too!
Hi, I had the same problem with Orange UK. I've updated to their latest ROM version and it all seems fine now.
sounds about right..
this forum is just great.. you can find every awnser of every question here ..
i simunlocked my T-mobile mda pro and put in my orange sim..
and guess what i couldnt send MMS (it uses UMTS i think ?)
an my girlfriend said that she gets al my smsses double ..
so i think when my T-mobile account activates (11-july )
the probs will go away. (keeps fingers crossed )
OR ....
is there an easy an safe way to change te umts settings so my mda pro will pick up the signal and stuff..
SAFE AND EASY is the key
greetz and thanx a lot.
Dutch subroute, me dutch to.
Do you use the dutch word "wel", like "test eens of hij het nu wel doet"
On all my versions from XDA-I to qtec9090 with several roms, eacht time I type "wel", the PDA will "autocorrect" this to the english verb "we'll"
The added quotes cuts the sms message in two.
on the bottomline of your screen you can see how many characters your message is and how many messages it will send.
I'm curious if this problem happens on your device as well.
yep same here..
LOL with the word 'wel' hehe i had the same problems.
gues only english spelling check available..
but xdaradar
do you also have the double sending sms problem
i have my t-mobile mda pro but its in use with an orange sim
enlighten me.
njet, never encountered that problem, not on my old XDA-I and not on my current qtec9090 with original ROM or tuma 1.3 ROM.
i'm using vodafone GPRS with six (!) inboxes without any problem
- email inbox for exchange mail
- three pop3 email accounts
- MMS inbox
- SMS inbox
they all sync and work arround the clock sending and receiving email
so I have no idea. did you try your simcard in an normal cellphone and what happens then?
hey xdaradar do you have a work around the we'll problem..
its kinda annoying
If this is what I think it is, ensure that you turn off Unicode support in the text options of POutlook.

i don't have the double sms thing, but turning off unicode doesn't help me with the autocorrect of wel to we'll
I used to have this problem with SPB pocket. When you hit the close button the messaging application terminates.
I was advised to add "tmail.exe" to the exclusion list in the spb pocket "Close button" properties.
okay, can I start crying now...?
I got the double SMS sent issue, but I also got the latest
T-Mobile ROM... (2.21.2.108)
PANIC!
Anyone got another idea...?
Sometimes friends even tell me they got the same messag 3 times!
costing a lot... hoping for a solution !
Do you use a task closer like HTC X, MagicButton etc?
V

I had the same problem. Found it was becuase I was closing the SMS app before receiving the SMS sent confirmation...

I applied the Sim Contact hotfix (which is essentially a radio upgrade) and it seems to have solve the problem so far I am on it for 2 days now and I havent got a single sms stucked. Hopefully this is the root of the issue and I know Dutty's Rom included this hotfix in it as well.
Update: Sorry it doesn't solve the issue.

Yell all that you want but it works for me. I've had 5 SMS siting in my outbox for over 30 minutes and they were not going anywhere. After I changed the setting they all went within one minute and new ones got there straight away. When I flashed 1.61 the same thing......and the same fix. Maybe there are other problems as well but this fixed mine.

You apparently haven't read the "SMS Message Peroblem" thread as there are loads of people who still have the problem even with setting this to GSM (including myself), so it's not a solution, if it works for you then you're just lucky. Of course I say wait, it may still happen at some random time
Even if GSM had fixed it, who want a HD2 with just G? i want H connection when I surf
it looks like all roms out there has this problem
a) so far did not occur to me with freyberry's v5.3 lite ROM
b) 2nadderf - this switch has nothing to do with 3G availability, but it does not work anyway
I have installed Freberrys rom nomess version, which includes htc sense but not htc messaging. It uses the old style off messaging, I dont mind atleast i can send messages without worrying if they have sent. I can confirm with this rom for me the issue has gone.
good news, there is a new fix @ htc.com and its work

[Q] Android splitting SMS, bug?

Hello, I am on MDeejay's rEVOlution 2.2, Kernel 7.6;
I was texting some people and they say android is splitting my text's. I texted myself, and it sends two seperate sms after 154 characters.
My carrier is Vodafone, and has no sms limit.
Anyone silly idea's?
I had the same issue some time ago, but with recieving messages from a friend. think I was using an older Mdeejay Z version. Haven't tested it with the new rEVOlution. But since we are both on VodafoneNL, that might be it. So we'll need input from non Vodafone users.
I now confirmed that even switching to something like 'handcent SMS', an alternate sms app for android - does not fix the issue.
It cuts off the sms after 160 characters, and sents everything after 160c in a seperate sms. Does it again at 320.
I have seen this... I don't recall how I fixed it within the original build (spare parts, maybe). Within the wonderful Handcent app goto settings / sent message settings and you will find the option to 'split sms 160'. Try removing the tick
Sent from my HTC HD2
Thanks for the input, mate.
Anyone else who has a idea on how to fix this in the standard messaging application from Android?

Yes. I was having this split sms-problem as well. I've tried a lot of things - but none worked.
I have been using different Sense roms (Desire and EVO-based) with the same problem. Then I took the step away from Sense and installed a stock Froyo Rom - HD2ONE. And voila - now my text messages are joined correctly at the receiving end.
But now I'm suffering from the echo-problem... Hope to fix it soon.
Im not sure what you mean right now after reading a couple times the thread.
If what you want is to send a single SMS with more than 160 chars, thats not possible. SMS (SHORT Message Service ) has a limit of 160 chars per message, sometimes a bit less if you carrier adds a signature or something at the end.
What cell phones do, is split SMSs every 160 chars, then send em and the receiving phone join em together again.
The issue might be on the way your Android Build splits the message
Sooooo, if you issue is with spliting, then yeah you can try fixing it using different ROMs, if what you want is sending 160+ SMSs, then I think is not possible

I guess most of us know that an SMS consist of max 160 chars. But most modern phones (from the last decade or so) make this almost invisible to the user, as when the user types more than 160 chars the phone will automatically split the message in two or more sms messages. These 2, 3 or more split text messages will then be rejoined again by the receiving phone.
This is how it should work on all mobile phones, but on different Sense builds on my phone something goes wrong. It seems (only seems) that my android sense phone does the right thing. When I send a message consisting of say 400 chars my phone sends this message to the receiver and it looks absolutely normal. It's invisible to me that the message is split - although I know of course that the phone does that for me. But whoever the receiver is (a nokia, Iphone, or another HTC) they all see my sms as 3 separate sms messages - not joined. I have received many complaints from friends and colleagues because my sms messages will not join on their phone.
The solution for me was to switch to a non sense android build.
Maybe most of the sense builds in this forum is originating from a us version or an asian version where the sms split/join control characters are different from the european ones, and therefore others phone (from europe where I come from) cannot understand it and does not join the messages. I don't know...
But I do know that a stock android build works for me...
And by the way... I figured out the echo-problem by reading Hastarins FAQ.
same problem here on mdj revolution 1.7 and o2 germany
maybe some more people of different builds can test if it's working fine. especially on sense builds!
I don't have this problem here. Just checked with girlfriends phone.

Does this problem has been solved ? People's stating to get annoyed by my "multiples SMS" & my no sent SMS (because it's sometimes converted in MMS and I didn't activated MMS on my network - so no sent).
I've noticed that downloading Hancent and removing it has changed the limit up to 160 chars in Sense-SMS.
It will be unfortunate to give up a wonderful Sense ROM because of this issue.
Configuration is :
ROM : Core_Droid_EVO_V0.7_SuperSonic [SD] (but problem occurs on all Sense ROM I tested so far).
Operator : Proximus [Belgium] (I think it's the big problem, 'cause in the changelog of V0.7 said).

I have actually seen this happen to regular Android phones running Sense, or any phone that was natively Android being updated outside of OTA Updates to a newer version (even if stock), so it's not just a porting issue.

[Q] ZTE Blade does not send big SMS.

So, I got into this problem some time ago and been trying to fix it since then.
It seems this is a problem with the SMSC, but I cannot solve it. I can only send SMS that are not bigger than 1 or 2 sms together, if I try 3 or 4, it doesn't send.
My cell's network is Vodafone, I'm in Portugal and this is the SMSC number I should be using:
+351911616161
The +351 is the country code.
I tried to use the *#*#4636#*#* code in order to change it.
I click "refresh", then "update". I click back, go there again and it's blank. Also tried to use other SMS app, still doesn't send big sms.
Thanks in advance.
Did you try it with an alternative sms application to see if this fixes anything?
try handcent sms
Não consegues enviar grandes msgs, tipo 3 ou 4 msgs numa so?

He is portuguese like me and i talk in our language
BTW i have exactly the same problem and i saw today, i cant send a big sms like 8msgs in 1
i use rom client and GOSMS pro client and same problem, i think maybe a problem with cyanogen or other thing...
