SMS only 70 Letters?! - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

As a few of you know i have only just got my Magician, and i have been using it for the last few days and i have to say that i love it i really do, but i do have one problem, when replying to an sms message the counter starts at 160 but then after writing a line or so it drops to 70! So for a 160 letter sms it sends it in two messages of 70!
Anyone got any ideas on what that might be?

i had the same problem too.. except after 3 messages it split to 3 messages for 112 charachters... was confused too....

Please check to see if you use any dobule byte character in your SMS. This might be the cause.

Hey guys this is due to the fact that when you write the SMSs you are including UNICODE characters such as ' " etc....
Due to the fact that these characters are encoded differently to standard characters, the SMS application has to reduce the number of characters in the sms and hence only allows 70 characters per sms.......which could mean that you send a short sms or send the sms split up! This can cost you a lot!!!
You have two options........
1/ Turn off Unicode characters
- this is done by; from you SMS inbox -> Tools -> Options -> Accounts Tab -> Click on * Text Messages -> un-tick the 'Use Unicode when necessary' -> then OK.
2/ Make sure that you don’t use Unicode characters
hope this helps!!

you can also turn unicode and double-byte characters off as well.
in messaging app, tap accounts, and then accounts
tap text messages, and then untick use unicode when necessary.
This still allows you to type in the extra characters, but wether it sends them or not, I dont know (being an uneducated englishman, i only speak english so never use those characters!)

this place just never seases to amaze me! Thanks very much guys you all deserve a star!

if you donate 5 euros then u get a star lol

No, because greek characters are in the extended unicode set, not the default characters.

but how come we can send 160char greek sms with other phones ?
perhaps there is a keyboard mapping that doesn't use unicode...

woh guys!! I wondered why my qtek S110 did wierd stuff.. it's all ok now thanks to you!! CHEEERS!! ;o)

In the default 7-bit SMS alphabet, the greek letters that do not have a latin equivalent (say beta -> B) or omomorph (say rho -> P) letter, that is delta, phi, gamma, lambda, omega, pi, psi, sigma theta and xi are available, but you can't chose between upper and lower case. The official character set only supports UPPER case...
There are a few semistandard for dealing with upper and lower cases, but it's quite likely that the sms application on windows mobile can't deal with either.

but with the greek keyboard it works!!!!!
only with the phone pad not......

How about Chinese characters?

Special Characters = SMS' eating

Hello.
I have an i-mate JAM with 1.06 ROM.
When I write an sms and I write my friends in spanish language, when i write chars like "á", "ó" etc. the max long for each sms go from 160 to 70.
Someone to know were is the reg key to fix it? It's possible that some installed program changed this, but the time to investigate it is tedious
Thanks...
thats because they are being sent as unicode, to turn unicode off go to:
Messaging --> tools --> options --> accounts --> Sms --> then untock the box (use unicode when necceseray)
only thing is im not srue how this will effect your messages if you use them characters
Thank you very much!!! That was!
Have fun.

2 text messages before 160characters?!!!

Yeah well the topic explains itself, I use the 2.06.00WWE rom on my XDA II and when I text someone it sends 2 messages before I even type 160characters, I remember a LONG time ago there was a topic on how to fix this but I don't remember, someone please help!
imablackhat,
Man you've got a nice sounding nickname, pls be by no means offended I really like it much better than mine
You're right there's a thread about it & can't remember which one, but I gues you're unicode characters or other special ones which occupy two bytes instead of one.
Know what i mean?
Regards, M

This happens when you use characters in your message which require unicode.
The standard SMS message only allows for approx. 70 chars/SMS in unicode.
Avoid unicode chars when writing SMS and check the counter which tells you exactly how many chars you have left and how many SMS will be sent.
Sascha
usually occurs when a word gets auto-corrected to include an apostrophe, eg when you type dont and it corrects it to don't, the ' screwes up the whole message. if you type don't yourself manually, then its fine, but the autocorrect is the main problem..

Bad example since don't does not trigger unicode.
On the other hand don´t or don`t will trigger unicode.
It depends on the exact character used und it is clearly shown by the messaging application.
So check it before sending.
Sascha
well if you read my message, i explicitely said it was when dont was autocorrected to don't. the ` or whatever character looks the same on the pda screen

Why only 70 characters SMS?

When I start a new SMS it appears 160 remaining characters. It's when I have to choose the recipient, but when I begin writing the remainig number of characters changes to only 70, so If I write 71 or more, there are at least 2 SMS to send...
Why only 70 characters?
Is there any way to increase the longitude of them?
some special characters can do that, like accents or brackets etc. Try not to use them
Hi
This use to happen on some smartphones that I used to have.
Try unchecking the 'Use unicode when neccesary' box
In Messaging select Tools--->Options--->Tap text Messages.
Let me know the outcome

I've just unchecked this option. I'll communicate the result.
Thank you.
PERFECT!!!
Now SMS's become 160 characters again.
Thank you.
I've seen this happen on phones if the auto correct feature is set to try and correct apostrophe characters (for example, changing its to it's )

Short Message Problems when using '

Hi,
when i use the ' character in a sms, my ameo only allows up to 70 characters.
Anyone with the same experience or how to solve this? I just want to avoid paying for 2 or more messages although my message is less the 160 characters.
Thanks, best regards,
tsfnet
How about other character than ' ? Why would you use 70 ' in SMS?
I'm unable to replicate this problem on my UK Ameo. Maybe a bug in the German edition, or perhaps something odd with your device. Can you confirm its the ' on the 'z' key on the Ameo Keyboard?

Problem solved, thanks

Yup, that's it ... many thanks
I'd noticed that sometimes mine was going over to a second message way before 160 chars - as I have more texts in my bundle than I'll ever use it didn't really bother me but have now unchecked the unicode box - thanks fallenczar

Galaxy S i9000 questions

Hi all.
I bought my new samsung s i9000 a week ago. I live in Greece but it came from Germany. I managed to change the locale and now all the text is displayed in Greek. I have installed swype and the greek language pack but I am facing the following issues.
1. Only when I send SMS the greek text is not displayed correctly. On the web etc the greek text is displayed fine. I guess it has to do because the galaxy sends the text as utf-8 and not unicode. But how do I fix this problem? BTW I can read fine SMS I receive in Greek.
2. The contacts have on the right side an alphabetic index for fast search. This is in English. How can I replace it with the Greek Alphabet? In order to search for a contact I need too many steps. The index would solve my search problem.
I would appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I've only had my SGS for half a day so I could be wrong but I think I saw it somewhere in the settings from th home screen, I'm sure there was a unicode option.

I bought it from a Greek e-shop but they told me before hand that it would from Germany. I didn't have any problems importing it because Greece is part of the EU.

Thank you gadget0. You were right. I didn't notice this option.
Now if someone could help me replace the English alphabet with the Greek it would be great. I wouldn't want more from this great smartphone. !!
Go to the market, and download 'Greek Input Method', by bitquill.net. Then activate it from Settings/ Locale and Text.
I personally found it excellent
EDIT: Ah, but I have the same problem, I hadn't tried to send sms in Greek. Sorry
Not sure if this will work in Greek but I had the same problem with sms and Japanese text. I solved it by changing 'input mode' to unicode in the messaging settings. This relies on your recipient phone accepting unicode text and not some other character set. Worked for me anyway.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Great, fixed mine too. Set it to Automatic.
Hmm, I don't think that the 2nd part can be solved that easily, however if your contacts are all in Greek you can search for them with the Greek keyboard. Maybe future firmwares will have the Greek alphabet.. which one do you have now?
SMS max letters & contacts localisation in Samsung Galaxy S
Hi,
I'm confirming the problems of depika for the in-country (Greece - by Cosmote) purchased phone too:
1. Unicode is a workaround that works so that at least we can send an sms, however we are limited to 70 chars,
2. If anyone has locale-only contacts (and not combined english + other lang) please let us know if you get proper sorting layout and not the one that depika reports.
P.S.: Who should we "bug" about regarding this one? Google or Samsung?
Thanks!
