I9000 to nexus - Galaxy S I9000 General

Would upgrading my i9000 to the newest nexus be worth it, or should I wait for the galaxy s 3 or beam or go for galaxy s 2???

Personally i am waiting for s3 with all the great ics roms at the moment my galaxy s i9000 feels like new so may as well wait...
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium

yeah that's a bit how I feel. I have everything in i9000 and the newest phones are just souped up versions from what I can tell.
The sgs 3 and/or beam seem a bit different from what I have seen, so I guess im not wrong to want to wait.
Cheers

I have thoroughly enjoyed the extensive life of my i9000, having flashed an unimaginable amount of ROM and kernel setups, tweaking it in every way I could figure out how to. Now that the i9000 ICS ROMs have reached a state usable as a daily phone, I must admit that it feels like I have a new phone again. ICS is a wonderful improvement.
That being said, a good friend of mine recently purchased a Galaxy Nexus. Actually, he purchased it before I had flashed ICS onto my phone. I thought the phone was a definite improvement over my i9000, but to be honest, it was just ICS. Our phones can play the same games, do the same things, and our pretty much equal. Sure, his dual-core processor gives him a bit more speed doing things like installing apps and such, but my i9000 is unbelievably responsive after upgrading to ICS. Before it, I was going to upgrade. Now that I'm using ICS, I have absolutely zero reason to upgrade. None at all. My phone works just as well as a new one.
Now if I had never discovered XDA and was still using the stock Gingerbread firmware, I would definitely be buying a new phone. Thank god for our wonderful devs!

Basically, the best phones for this year would be the Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X. The Galaxy Nexus is similar to the Nexus S in the sense that is was released during the transition of core numbers, and hence would have rather inferior hardware by the second half of 2012. I was thinking of getting the Galaxy Nexus initially, but now I've decided to wait for the S3.

If you're upgrading from an I9000, I strongly urge you to wait for the SGS3. HTC locks down their devices and you will not have a good time flashing ROMs when they do

Go for it!
Recently made the switch from 19000 to Galaxy Nexus myself, got it on a 12 month plan. The brilliant thing about it is how easy it was to unlock the bootloader, root it and install a custom rom. So if you are into tweaking your phone, go for the Nexus as its brilliant. Updating is also much quicker compared to I9000 and S2, plus no touchwiz.

GPU in the Nexus is unimpressive, same as the SGS just clocked faster.
That's a big reason why I'm waiting for the S3. Or the next Nexus, given how slick ICSSGS is I think it breathed another year of life into this unit.

i like the samsung beam looks different to all other phones even with that projector on it good for work and home when watching movies lol

Thanks for all the replies everyone, yeah I think I'll wait.
The beam looks very nice indeed, but from the little we do know, so does the s3.

hm.. next phone??

After owning the galaxy there's no question in my mind most of us will remain with Samsung and android especially people who use custom Roms. But what's next after having this amazing phone?
It has been a year now since I've had mine, and obviously its soon time to upgrade.
For me I think ill skip the galaxy Note... I don't think its worth the upgrade just yet.
CES is just round the corner, and something else after that I think? I'm holding out to see whether Samsung's planning an SIII for this half of the year. We've already seen a supposed leaked shot taken from a device with the product code i9500 from inside a Samsung office.... It seems fairly probable that we'll see something by February as we have for the last 2 years. What are other peoples thoughts?
Personally, I am really disappointed with Samsung leaving 10 million plus SGS owners off the ICS train (especially because of their touchwiz that sucks), and I wanna show it to them by not buying their products. I'm still waiting for a stable custom ics sgs rom. I would have eyed the galaxy nexus, but it kind of bothers me that it's samsung. but it does not have the touchwiz and will get updates fast.
I'm quite fed up with the so called android fragmentation, but don't want to go the apple way. I want more nexus-like products with clean android and fast updates. Guess I'm screwed...

Somebody mis-translated the original Korean statement and it all went a bit mad on here. No reason to boycott Samsung anymore.
Im hoping the S3 isn't too far around the corner. As much as I would have gone for the recent Nexus S or whatever it is, its specs leave me cold. No memory slot? Pfft.

After one year with my SGS I'm still totally satisfied with it. I can read ebooks, play games or watch movies without any problems. Currently I don't need more memory, higer resolution screen or multicore processor. But perhaps when SGS III hits the market and devs/modders will start playing with it, I'll probably buy it.
I'm waiting for the s3. Hope it is announced at the CES

To OP: Wait for the SIII. The Note is just ridiculously oversized for a phone. I have seen people talking on it, and it looks stupid. You might as well walk around with a laptop stuck to your face. That way, at least no one can tell who you are.
I'm waiting. For the moment i'm satisfied with my Galaxy S. No need (for me) to buy a new one. And there will be new Roms for it,too.
The Galaxy note isn't a Smartphone - it's a very small tablet. For a smartphone it's too big, and for a tablet too small. Odd product.
SGS3. Nothing else.

I think I'm lucky in that my contract ends in November and when I sign up for a new one (not sure with whom yet), I will get a new phone. If the S3 comes out in the 1st half of 1012, by November, it will be less expensive and I can get it cheaper.
I am super happy with my SGS and for what I use my phone for, I don't really need a new one, but I guess for 4G or LTE it's worth it, and it will be cheap since I will get it on a contract.
Ian
same here i can change phone in december, and am waiting for post ces releases to see what comes next, anything with tegra 3 or samsungs equivalent
will be waiting for galaxy S III,should be a spectacular device.

Well, I ain't upgrading. S2 is good enough!!
The people who have the money and dont have anything else to spend on will buy it
As for the devs buying it they need a new challenge on the latest device
Only upgrade would be a HD screen who cares when its only a 4.8 inch screen
And then comes Quad core, I believe the dual core does enough tasks

S III rocks. More performance and more battery than S II. Why NOT to upgrade? Only if you don't have enough money, because everyone wants to upgrade. It's always good to keep supported and updated things. S II is going to be DEAD for Samsung in a few months, just like S I. I don't doubt Samsung won't update S II to Jellybean, just like they didn't update S I to ICS.

The S1 came with Eclair then to Froyo and hen Gingerbread. So there is a chancr S2 will go from GB to ICS then JB (Not Justin Beiber. Lol).. But if samsung follows the 18month rule (forgot what it was called) and JB wont be released within a few months then there is a chance we won't get an upgrade (from the OEM anyway). If pocketnow is correct and JB is just a
point release (minor update from 4.0 ics to 4.1 and not 5.0) then maybe we will have a chance.

Battery is nice, but I dont see any large reason of requiring more performance. SGS2 does everything I need done without problems. Obviously there are other upgrades and new things, but nothing to completely convince me to change to the SGS3.

I agree, but more battery results almost the same if you have more processor and bigger screen, plus i really like the SG2 design over the SG3.
I think I'll pass the 3 and wait for the 4. Or the next Sony Xperia S, because thats a sexy phone, and the only reason why i dont change my SG2 its because it has the same or less specs.
I was expecting more from the SG3. It just dont look classy like the 2. Looks more plastic.

Of course not. Can't I give my opinion? If you disagree, you can post here why. But just telling that it was noobish, just make your answer noobish. So shut up and stop being a noob.
PS: Some guy told me that the GS I has been upgrated twice. Sorry, I forgot this fact. Maybe Samsung won't forget the GSII in a few months, but after Jellybean. I'm sure Samsung will upgrate GS II to JB, it was no major update, it's mostly the project butter And since the nexus got upgraded, Samsung has no excuses to not upgrade.
Really this is how i look at it: The S3 is the S2 with a slightly nicer screen, slightly nicer battery, slightly nicer version of android, Slightly more memory, and a few mild tweaks. Big deal! The S2 still kicks ass of any phone out there, its a workhorse that will be good for at least another year before its really outdated.
Faster processor? My processor is fast enough as it is!
More memory? I never run out of memory doing what i usually do!
Newer android version? Developers for the SGS2 are awesome! LOTS of development for the S2 and theres lots of ports from the S3 to be made, still lots of room to advance the S2 so no worries there.
The only way im going to the S3 is if i can sell my phone and buy the S3 for only $100 more. Thats my limit. If i can, why not. $100 for me for an upgrade every year or so? thats not too bad. But if it doesnt happen so what? I love my phone! it works well, its fast, it does everything i want and more!
Anyways, thats how i feel, and i know there are many otheres who feel the same way!

SGS2 id known as the android device with the most roms available, and i can tell you one thing,
if you want the sgs3 becouse of its os, SGS2 next update wont be 4.1 Jellly Bean,
it will be touchwiz ux from the sgs3, but for the performance, its a great device,
but they didnt solve neither battery or heat problems, and the device is very weak
and fragile

The s3 has double the memory...that's not a slight upgrade at all. Just wanted to point that out...I agree with the rest. Although the s3 is noticeably faster. I played with one at work today...it was impressive. At least it was a bigger upgrade than the iPhone 4 to the 4s. That's what made me get a gs2 in the first place...slow laggy 512 ram from the iPhone compared to a gig in the s2 and the s3 has 2gb and its very noticeable.

Before I actually got the phone in my hands I didn't think it was any different from S2. Oh how wrong was I. The S3 is a much better device in every aspect.
I will keep my S2 anyway, it's the best looking phone ever in my opinion.

Galaxy S III vs Jellybean GNex

I'm so tired of people with GNex's geeking out over JB. Few people in my Android G+ Circle claimed it's a waste of money to get anything other than a Nexus.
Jellybean is cool....but the hardware is just not up to par with the new Android heavy hitters. I'll wait for the new GNex and decide on keeping the GS3 or jumping ship.

Jelly Bean is way smoother and faster than ICS for sure BUTTTT GS3's will be even faster when we get CM10 so I am not really too upset. Source was released today so we should have some roms within a week or two(optimistically).
It's really at your discretion. Basically Nexus is software, it's the latest and greatest and most natural google experience. You get a non nexus device, it's all about the latest hardware, better Processor, more/faster ram, better gpu, better screen, stuff like that.
So you want software and wait another year for better hardware or you want hardware and wait a few weeks-months after source is released to get the latest (buggy somewhat to a certain point) software.

I agree with you I had the GNex and it's a great phone, very fast for every thing. Except for gaming. Sure it runs 2D games good but when I got to the 3D games like Shadowgun and such the hardware starts showing its age.

Actually I played with my friends GNex w/Jellybean for a hour or so this weekend and I didn't find it to be any faster than my GS3. Slower at doing intensive stuff. Mind you I running a tweaked Kernel, JB Transition Mod, and Nova Launcher (which is waaaayyy faster than Touchwiz launcher).
If the new GNex comes with Key Lime Pie this year, i'd probably jump all over that. I just don't think its worth buying a GNex now over the GS3 or One X.
I'm on the fence. My friend let me borrow a nexus running jb he got at Google io, and my s3 is powered off. I'm debating returning the s3. I really enjoy the vanilla experience. I'm not a very big phone gamer.

Honestly, if you can wait and just run ICS for about a month to two months, we should be getting some stable JB roms by then.
I am sure the sgs3 is better then the gnex.
But I must say I love my gnex.
I use to have a sgs2 and thought it was great. Even after my gnex came I was a little disappointed. But now after a week of rocking the gnex i can say wow what a difference. I use to rom my sgs2, and run the latest buggy roms. But it always felt forced. The devs are great and without them android wouldn't be what it is today.
But the nexus experience is awesome. With jelly coming soon(offical ota) and the promise of klp I will rock this phone until next google I/o.
Granted my sgs2 was a cdma phone so it was a little behind the the gsm counterparts. And I love what Samsung does, but they are a little slow with updates or releases.
Another thing I would like to point out is the gnex(ics), in my hand, which is as smooth if not smoother then your sgs3 is old. I mean there has been 2 if not 3 new processors out since its release. I am proud it is still competing with the newest hardware.
There are some things I wish were better, camera to name one. But still this thing is smooth and sips battery compared to my sgs2 with a Rom of ics.
As far as 3d games go, I don't game on my phone, that's what tablets are for.
Oh and this thing was only $350 sans contact. Now I only pay $45 a month for unlimited everything.

sure we'll have to wait, but since we all have top-tier phones, we should all get decent update support from samsung. I'm sure this was part of the reason to release one model in the us (and almost the same model overseas). I prefer better hardware over quicker updates. Besides once cm10 gets going on our devices, it won't matter much. CM10 gs3 vs cm10 gnex, the gs3 will win in a landslide.

After owning the nexus s I realized that I greatly prefer the vanilla android experience. However, the lack of quality in the gnex camera is what led me to choose the sgs3 instead.

The S III will get JB or CM10 sooner than later with all the dev support for it. Once that happens, it won't even be a contest.
Even with the wait, lets look at these major advantages for the S III.
***Expandable memory*** (this is HUGE)
2gb of ram vs 1gb
Superior GPU
Bigger battery
Yes, since the S III isn't a Nexus device we won't always get the latest and greatest first. But given the hardware and dev support, I wouldn't hesitate to get the S III over the Nexus again.
It'll be a different story once the next Nexus comes out, but that won't be for awhile. I thought about waiting, but the current GSM Nexus didn't come out until April. I don't think the next unlocked GSM Nexus will come out until early 2013 which is a long time from now. I'd rather enjoy my S III and wait for CM10 and enjoy the phone here and now.

The Galaxy Nexus was released November of last year (I bought the GSM unlocked when it came out). The next Nexus will most likely be released 4th quarter of this year. That said, I initially told myself I'd wait until the next Nexus to buy another phone, but the GS3 was a little too tempting so I made the leap. I still have my Nexus though, but I'll probably be selling it this week, and pre-ordering the Nexus 7.

I used JB for a hour or two on my friend's GNex. It was nice. Huge improvement over Gnex with ICS. But with the custom kernels and JB Mods in these forums, I couldn't say it is worth buying over the GS3. THe next Gnex...different story.

I'm on the fence. My friend let me borrow a nexus running jb he got at Google io, and my s3 is powered off. I'm debating returning the s3. I really enjoy the vanilla experience. I'm not a very big phone gamer.
I can never make up my mind

I'd say just wait until the new one. You're wasting money buying the current GNex with the new one coming out this year. Wait for CM9 port.

After owning the nexus s I realized that I greatly prefer the vanilla android experience. However, the lack of quality in the gnex camera is what led me to choose the sgs3 instead.

Yeah hardware is way better. Not just camera but screen also. Expandable storage

Yup. No point getting current GNex.
I've had the GNex for a while now and I wasn't expecting to be as impressed with the S3 as I have been, during the short period of time that I have had it.
Most everybody knows the strong and weak points of the GNex by now, so I'm just going list the areas where I think the s3 really outclasses it. First off battery life, battery life, battery life! Yeah I said that three times. The reason is because I literally get about three times the battery length that I got with the GNex, with essentially the same size battery. I don't get it at all but I am getting crazy battery life, even with the screen cranked up to about 75% brightness, when I used to leave the GNex on auto brightness. This alone is enough of an advantage to recommend the S3. On top of this the S3 also has a considerably better processor, an sd card slot, better build quality, much better camera, much better speakers, and seems to get a better signal as well.
I love the GNex for many reasons, I don't plan on selling it as I will probably still activate it from time to time, but I don't think that there is any question about which is a better everyday phone. I even like a lot of the features of touchwiz, the overall look of the UI is pretty much hideous in my opinion though. I hope to be able to run a touchwiz based rom that is themed like aosp, with on screen buttons some time in the near future. I think that I could be thoroughly satisfied with that for a long time.

Galaxy S II or Nexus S - which to keep

Hi guys
Just wanted some advice on this issue. I realise I'm posting on the Nexus S subforum so the comments might lean in its favour but here goes.
So I've had a Nexus S since launch, and have loved having one. Jelly Bean has made it even more awesome than before, but now I'm a point where my dad is trading in his SGS II for an iPhone 5 when it launches so I was wondering if I should trade in my Nexus S instead and keep the SGS II.
What do you guys think? Is the SGS II better because of the fact that it's been a long while since it launched and the modding scene is fairly well developed? With a reasonable modding scene for the SGS II, I'm wondering if the beefier hardware will be better long term.
Depends on the model of the gs2 really. International I like. Something like sprint gs2 um no thank you.
S2 is just better there is really no contest.
What version of the GS2? If it's Sprint or US Cellular version, trade it in cuz these versions suck bad, otherwise I would keep the GS2.

On hardware maybe. Software wise the Nexus winds hands down. The S2 is pretty much dead development wise by comparison.

its the international version of the SII, and the UK version of NS
Also Project Butter is broken on SGS2 JB roms.
I'd get the gs2 no doubt then.
If I was in this situation, I personally would keep NS as the backup phone, sell GSII, and use that money to upgrade to a new, more powerful phone. (My new phone will be either the next Nexus or Note II)
Why? Because when I'm bored, I can take it out and flash this try that for fun. On the other hand, it can give you a taste of AOSP (if you're using a featured phone and like what the stock ROM offers, e.g. the Note) and possibly some ports of newer Android version if Google decided to drop it.
Besides, the GSII is a commercial phone which means OEM will eventually leave it behind in favor of newer models. Thus, dev community will die out too because they don't have new, updated source code.
If you're thinking that GSII is more superior than the NS, then I would say why would you want to keep it as a backup instead of using/abusing it. It would be a waste leaving it there collecting dust. NS is great for a backup because it's not that inferior nor superior.
Ns ftw. Non nexus device- never again!

Hardware isn't everything. Infact it doesn't mean much when compared to newer, better software. Keep the NS.
Nexus S. (GSM i9020a)
Paranoid (1.97a - 4.1.1)
Air Kernel (Week 182 - Voodoo)
SmartassV2 (1200/200)
Deep Idle (On - Deadline)
Black Exodus (Inverted apps)

Yeah this is already my tinkering device. My main device is not android. So for purely tinkering, NS > SII? I thought with the time SII has been out, the modding scene would be thriving instead of evaporating.
Keep the nexus s! Good development

100%. That is the sole reason i bought the nexus s. At the time, the galaxy s2 had just come out and i was debating getting the galaxy s2.
But ultimately I decided I would much rather have a phone that was more up to date software wise and google vanilla instead of the horrible (imo) samsung finger print...
Nexus S!!!!

i think nexus s is good.if you like to port or you are a developer, you may choose nexus s.if you are only a user,i think you may choose Galaxy ii

Keep the NS and sell the G2 and get a GN or wait for the next Nexus.

NS for collection; GS2 for use.
keep ns if you love flashing
Keep the NS. JellyBean makes it fly.

Considering upgrading from s3 to s4

I want to buy the s4 (gt-i9500 model) and I come from s3.
I just wanted to ask whoever got the phone already and had the galaxy s3 if there was any downgrade in user experience from the s3?
downgrade in user experience? seriously? i mean its not life-altering fast, but it is way faster than my S3 is and the screen is a lot better. got one for my wife and she loves it
I have just bought one today and i'm upgrading from a Galaxy S2 (i9100) and i can say the upgrade is pretty big experience wise as well as sound and display wise.
Coming from an S3 to an S4 the impact is not so big but i don't know if it's such a big improvement to be worth the upgrade unless you can sell your phone and get enough money to cover at least half of the cost of the S4.
worth the trade. No joke. Ive gone from the s1 to s2 to s3 and now the s4. massive improvement every time.

Upgrading from s3 should be a straight forward decision, no thinking what so ever, it is way better than s3 and beats it in every dept, upgrading from note 2 is still a question mark though, so I am taking my time.

I did that. And I am happy with it.

I actually made the upgrade from a note 2 which is basicly a bigger s3.
What i miss is the bigger screen. Also the device is very Light! It takes time to get used to it.
In terms of speed the note 2 does feel smoother. But then again, it's gotten the **** tweaked out of it and it's overclocked. Also, a custom rom makes a huge difference. Multitasking lags a bit for me on the s4.
Now, what actually makes it worth while for me is the nice screen the s4 has!
It's so damn nice and sharp. The note 2 should have been 1080p.
However , the s4 will get custom firmwares and kernels, it's just a matter of time.
Can't want till the s4 gets custom kernels.
Btw, just to answer your question. My mom has a s3 and i played alot with it before i got the note2.
From a s3 to s4 is really worth the upgrade! If you have a note2 however, try it out for a few weeks before making a choice. The s4 has not custom firmwares yet, it is rooted tho. Cwm ain't fully avaiable as well. Lets see in about a month
I would love to upgrade from S3 to S4, but the main thing holding me back is the probable Development lag. CM team seams to be p****d of from
Sammy. We still waiting for missing codes on the S3, the main reason why the AOSP roms are not fully functional
Any advices are welcome, otherwise HTC one

i think the only problem with dev on the S4 is the bootloader, but from what i can tell on Cyanogen's G+ page, he already has CM10.1 on his Tmo S4
and im running AOKP on my S3, what doesn't work?
Go for it. And you will love it.

CM development has already begun for the qualcomm version. In fact, the qualcomm version is expected to see faster dev work coz qualcomm provides the proper drivers and binaries required. Steve Kondik has already built an alpha build of cm for the s4 with all core functions and even baseband radio working.
Thank you all, I think i'll wait a while until the price drops below 3500 NIS (~1000USD) and buy it.
Thanks for your help
The only thing stopping me from upgrading the sgs3 to sgs4 is the narrow field of view for pictures - other than that user experience etc is very similar... but is a showstopper for me.
Most of the "drawbacks" are software based, and you'll get a much more powerful device in your hands when development kicks off Go for it if you're coming from S3!
The big difference is if you currently have the 32gb version, since it has 17gb more storage for apps than the S4. If you are not a gamer and have the 16gb S3, you should be good to go
Since games play great on the S3 and 1080p seems not as important on a small display, I will wait for the 32gb version. If no 32gb version is released, I will keep my S3 A big BLEH though to Verizon if they don't carry the 32gb version. I preordered with Best Buy, but will cancel if just 16gb offered.
